In the manga have they ever said Zoro was the first mate. I readed a lot of fan made site said he is the first mate, but have Oda ever said he's the first?
Is Zoro the First Mate?
-
-
He's the first one to ever join the straw hat crew…which kinda makes him the first mate.
-
The hell is this
-
First Mate
Swordsman is the dumbfan crew position, but his REAL POSITION is First Mate.
-
He's not just his first mate, he's the Second Capitan. Like Jango was to Kuro.
-
@Lobster:

What the hell are you smoking?
-
Being the first mate is the same as being the "second captain", Lobster. Just think of a Pirate Crew as a corporation and Zoro as the vicepresident that halped Luffy to establish the base of what we know now as the Strawhats.
-
In any ordinary pirate crew, First Mate would be either the Navigator or the Quartermaster (In charge of rations and pay), with the rank of Captain held by whichever one of these two was not First Mate. In One Piece, the title of First Mate seems to go to whichever crewman possesses a combination of wits, brawn, and charisma second only to the Captain's. As of the publication of One Piece Yellow, Zoro's position is listed as 'Fighter'. Draw your own conclusions.
-
Second Capitan is different. First Mate = Side Kick (who stays by his side)
2nd Capitan = someone who is a replacement leader when their leader is captured/on vacation.
-
The usual title would be Acting Captain, but since this was a position usually filled in by the First Mate (or, in the case of their incapacitation, the Second Mate) it's all semantics, really.
-

Ya because then Luffy really should be captain
It was never stated that Zoro is the first mate. However in times of critical importance, it seems that Zoro is perhaps the most level headed, ie Aoi Koji, the crisis with Luffy and Usopp, and among others. (along with Robin). However Im not sure if he is really "second captain" material as hes somewhat of a lone wolf.
-
I doubt real pirates would just follow a "second captain" (if the captain was captured or on…...Should I say it? VACATIONS) rather than commit mutiny to see who gets the position of captain, and like Smurf Mod said, in One Piece the first mate is most of the time the one with enough charisma to make the others to follow him; however, there's Mohji, who had to fight to replace Buggy, so we can't say that every first mate is just like Zoro.
-
Actually, ya' know… Nami acts more like the Capitan sometimes
-
Nami and Zoro have both taken charge at different times. Nami, as the navigator, decides where the ship goes (with Luffy's agreement), so she's technically the first mate. However, in times of extreme stress (Usopp vs. Luffy), Zoro has been shown to display leadership qualities to calm the crew.
So, it pretty much depends on the situation.
-
Yeah, there's also that, but I think it's more due to Nami's ways rather than having actual power. Let's face it, some of the SH are too easy to manipulate, so even Luffy the captain is no match for Nami's ambition at times.

Yeah with Nami she the one who takes control when they are sailing. She the one who tells people what to do.
-
But she's too "weak" in situations like the LuffyVSUsopp or Ennies Lobby, so yeah, in situations where a calm mind is needed, Zoro's the best to take command when Luffy's not around. I actually think it has to do more with that than Zoro being actually the second in command. It's not like Zoro goes around giving orders after all. He just shares his toughts with the others, wich most of the time work to calm them down and have them to do their best.
-
LOL Vacation.
When I was younger, I thought a long time Usopp is the vice-captain, because (at least) in the german version Usopp said something like "If you give up, I'm the captain, okay?!" after his joining.
Remember the scene when Sanji and Zorro left Luffy alone with Kiji, and Usopp screamed at Sanji "How can you do this?!" and Zorro told him in a 1 on 1-Fight no one could help the captain? It made me think that Zorro would be the right choice for the position ,vice captain'.
If it's not so, he'd be automatically just first mate to me.But the Strawhats are somehow too random for personifications like that. Like no one would ever believe that Luffy is the captain, because of his doing all day (until he fights or something WTF happens)
-
Robin would be one badass pirate captain, tough. Too bad Oda already made her to be too bussy with that lost history in a story where brutal punishment is not allowed.
-
Yeah with Nami she the one who takes control when they are sailing. She the one who tells people what to do.
In relation to Luffy´s philosophy of a real pirate/fighter/man Zoro is closer to him then Nami (even though she also can lead from time to time). That´s why she´s good as a second mate.
I doubt that Oda acidentally made Zoro "the First Person" and Nami "the Second Person".
-
The way I see it, situations concerning the wellfare of the ship and it's course during crisis such as storms, icebergs, giant whales, escaping from Marine Complexes etc Nami is in charge. During badass situations against enemy pirates and fights, Zoro is in charge.
-
Robin is the smartest of the crew and the most observant, but she lacks the ability to lead. Therefore, she wouldn't make a very good captain. She's a good fighter (your avatar illustrates that, Kaimei), and she's good at conning people, but she's not very good at taking charge, and often defers to others when it comes to decision-making. Whether that's just her nature, if she's just amusing herself, or if she just incapable of making decisions regarding the actions of others.

Notable First Mates and Chief Mates
- Starbuck, first mate in the book Moby Dick and source of the coffee chain Starbucks' name.
- Joshamee Gibbs, fictional first mate in the Pirates of the Caribbean
- John Paul Jones was a first mate at age nineteen
- Roronoa Zoro, first mate of the Straw Hat Pirates in the manga and anime One Piece.
- Zoe Washburne, fictional first mate of the Firefly
- Henry T. Wilde, chief officer of the Titanic
- William McMaster Murdoch, first officer of the Titanic
- John Biscoe, English mariner and explorer, often sailed as first mate
- Jabez Peters, first mate of barque Dundonald when it was wrecked on the coast of Disappointment Island
- Chewbacca, first mate of the Millennium Falcon
- (Willy) Gilligan, first mate of the SS Minnow.
WIKIPEDIA NEVER LIES.
Anyways, despite that random note, Zoro and Nami could share the position. Nami does the management (Money, navigation..) and Zoro cares about the crew's welfare when Luffy's not around.
Hell, we could even say that Usopp was at one time the First mate for taking care of the security of Merry.
-
Well I would say Zoro only takes charge when Luffy's too soft. When he gave chooper that speech about being a man or telling the others why Ussop can't come back unless he apologizes.
So I say he keeps the crew from falling apart by defending them and having to be harsh when necessary. Since he seems to have the most discipline then the rest of the crew. -

That's because she's goddamn lazy. She's always shown sitting on her ass when everybody is working around the deck.
I'd stab her if she was my captain.

Hey, if you can get away with it, why not?
-
I'm sorry Kamei to say that, but Wiki often lies, or this is my opinion at all. I never depended on wiki :P And I also believe that yea Zoro is the first mate of the crew.
-
i think ur allowed to edit the articles on wikipedia, i dont know
sometimes people mistake Zoro for captain (Baroque Works incident)
-
Zoro's position is to be badass
-
And have Green hair and be fanservice cannon fodder for the girls who like Oda's thing of making guys to often be shirtless.
Anyways, it's funny how yesterday I got a warning for messing up with the Dream Cast Article, yet nobody gave a damn when I completely deleted a page about Ice fish or whatever the species of Kokoro was.
And yeah, Gohn, Robin is often too bored to even care about what happens around her; however, I doubt anyone would achieve to kill her off if she was the captain. I actually think Robin could get rid of Luffy if she wanted, but since that's not the case, then arguing such a thing is pointless.
-
…wait so Zoro was never officially called First Mate by Luffy?!
I just realized this. I just sorta assumed it was true because of the fanbase and stuff but yeah, I don't think Luffy every says it so...First Mate Nami? She;s clearly the boss of the ship, even when Luffy;s around most of the time. -
That's why Luffy's stupidity is good for his leadership. Just think of how Sanji would react if he HAD to listen to Zoro. Luffy apparently doesn't like Ranks, so he lets them to what they want untill a situation like the Usopp Incident pops up.
-
Well I would say Zoro only takes charge when Luffy's too soft. When he gave chooper that speech about being a man or telling the others why Ussop can't come back unless he apologizes.
So I say he keeps the crew from falling apart by defending them and having to be harsh when necessary. Since he seems to have the most discipline then the rest of the crew. This is quite agreeable.
Another example is when the fight between Usopp and Luffy occured, and Luffy started crying. Zoro was the one who told him to suck it up and be the one everyone can depend on as captain.Nami on the other hand, is only leader when it comes to weather, etc; that's because she's the only one who knows how to handle it, as the rightful position as the navigator. On the other hand, she can't possibly be first mate because she's weak when it comes to tough situations at Usopp/Enies Lobby, etc. And also lacking physical strength.
Zoro is the second strongest and it seems Luffy trusts him as first mate when he's not in charge for certain situations.
-
What does Zoros wanted poster say? Did I make things up about it calling him first mate?
-
Zoro is both First mate AND Swordsman.
Enough said.
-
Sigh

As you can see, none of the strawhat's POSITION is directly related to how they fight.
(Yeah, I know Ussop was officailly the Sharpshooter, but really, what he does on the ship would mostly fall under Quatermaster) -
You're spacing is a little off on the words Fighting style, Martial Artsit, and Assassin. Just want to point that out.
-
You've made some spaces in Fighting style, Martial Artsit, and Assassin. Just want to point that out.
I didn't >< It decided to do that in posting, but when I go to edit it, the spaces aren't there @_@ It's kinda fucked up.

You saw it though right? Before you submitted it looked fine XP
-
Yeah it did. When I quote it, it looks fine just like you said. But when I preview it, it showed the same spacing error in the same spots. Must be a glitch or something.
-
I'm gonna say it…
The spacing for Robin's fighting style is amusing.
I said it.
Anyway, as far as I'm aware, "Swordsman" isn't a pirate crew position. I'm pretty sure he's the First Mate, but not just because everyone says so.
1: He often takes charge in tough situations when Luffy's not around.
2: He's pretty level-headed, which is a good quality to have in a position where you're likely to be placed under pressure.
3: He was Luffy's first recruit, which means he's known the man (ever so slightly) longer.
And the Coup de Grace:
4: Mutual trust. I'm gonna refer to the Bellamy Incident here. They're literally getting the everloving crap beaten out of them and they've made an agreement with each other (and Nami) to stand there and take it. If that's not a hard order to follow I don't know what is (I would have decked the guy shortly after getting slammed into the bar, for those keeping score at home.) -
I kind of consider Zoro to be second in command especially after those nice words he had with/on Chopper & Usopp.
-
he even lectured Nami and Sanji after Luffy brought Brooke onboard. Even though small I thought that was another good example of Zoro's role.
-
pretty sure usopp is the sniper kitsune.
zoro is both first mate and swordsman i guess. def first mate though.
and i think first mate is the first to join the crew/subcaptain -
pretty sure usopp is the sniper kitsune.
Sniper's more of a fighting style, IMO. I've always thought of him as their weapons expert/gunner (cannoneer.)
-
When Nami takes charge, I see it as being part of her job as Navigator. I look at Zorro leading as his job as first mate.
To Kitsune: 9-Tailed Beast: Best Robin description ever!
