I think it is clear that One Piece pirates are different from normal real live pirates. They are much more purer versions in a sense or ideal pirates.
Pirates my ass

yeah, i'm agree with this opinion!
-
Okay, now that this has been solved, let's discuss something more intriguing like…
Detective my ass! >:(

I think we should go back to the original suggested idea of
"Is Buggy Really A Clown?"My take: No. This is simply Oda working on stereotypes that clowns wear makeup. But in reality, they are also supposed to amuse people and children with self-deprecating humor. Buggy does not fit this. In fact he attacks people who make fun of him and his clownish behavior. I suggest with issue Buggy with a mythical and fictitious restraining order, making him stop referring to himself as a clown, remove all imagery suggesting that he is so and pay reparations to the clown community that he has so wronged for this last decade.
-
How about: Is Vivi really a Princess?
-
Most of this has already been said, but yes, the Straw Hats are unusual pirates, even for thier world, but…
They became pirates in the eyes of the world the moment they raised a pirate flag. I mean, it's not like a marine or a fearful citizen is going to look at a boat, see a pirate flag, and think "Hmm, I don't recognize that flag or the crew, and I haven't SEEN them plunder anybody, so I bet they aren't really pirates." Of course not. Everyone who sees a pirate flag is going to assume that the people flying it are actually pirates, and treat them as such.
As for whether the Straw Hats actions fit those of pirates, they do a little. They sail around under a pirate flag, disregarding the authority of the world government, and they have stolen stuff. Yes, they haven't stolen much, and their biggest heist was from people willing to give up their gold freely, but that doesn't change the fact that they have stolen stuff. It's not as if their's some "pirate quota" of stuff you have to steal each month or you cease to be a pirate.
One thing to keep in mind regarding the Straw Hats is that with the exception of Luffy, being a pirate is incidental to their goals and dreams. Being a pirate and sailing the grandline is convienent for them, but there are other ways they could fufill their dreams. Luffy wants to be Pirate King, but he's not a cruel person, so he's going to be selective about when and where he steals.

But Buggy is a clown…

Is Spongebob really a sponge?
Or is he a Yellow waffel. -

is Zoro really a Samurai? -
@LongRob:
oh man!
is Zoro really a Samurai? Is Sniper Island really in you Heart?
Is Ussop really Sogeking,Or is his mom really Alive and she thought it was Halloween. -

Is Luffy actually RUBBER?!
-
@Kaimei-Karasuhebi:
Is Luffy actually RUBBER?!
Or is he Flexable.
-
I think we should go back to the original suggested idea of
"Is Buggy Really A Clown?"The more interesting question is, why somebody who has a minority complex because of the red nose calls him self "The Clown"?!?
-
@LongRob:
oh man!
is Zoro really a Samurai? No. He's just like a samurai.
Quoting 4Kids dub as canon FTW.

Well, OP seems to be written from the winners' perspective. We don't see the people left behind in the Arlong Empire who played along all these years, probably lived well, and will soon be beaten savagely for it.
That'd be pretty hilarious if the whole series followed a crew of evil pirates who raped, murdered, and pillaged, and out of nowhere Luffy appears and beats the shit out of them.
-
Naruto's not about real ninjas either
I mean ninjas don't wear orange and they kill people
-
Is there even a need for a thread to discuss this? For pete's sake, This is a SHOUNEN series, of course it doesn't match the qualities real pirates as much as how Naruto's plot matches real ninjas.
-
This post is deleted!
-
Yeah, apparently originality is lost on people these days. I honestly don't see how Naruto and OP not being accurate to their inspirations is a problem.
-
well I dont think we should be concentrating on the realism of this series…. To be honest, if your only gonna point out the fact that their not like real pirates, than your pretty oblivious...
I mean the story is about a character made of rubber who goes around as a pirate with a green haired swordsmen, a seductive theif, a perverted cook, a talking reindeer, a lady that can make her body parts appear anywhere she likes.... and your commenting on the fact that they dont seem like your vision of the perfect pirate.
-
They stole and found treasure, plus they have fought against the government and authorities, they are pretty much criminals.
-
yeah
goddam it skarlath! you suck!oh… I'm sorry. I'm just following the crazy mob mentality that has turned this thread into the "flame skarlath" thread. I started a discussion and admitted to more valid views. But nope. Let's still call me retard and allude to my masturbation techniques.

Way to say the same thing as my post in a boring way
-
You know what I've been wondering for a while….
How does Chopper manage to keep Luffy, Zoro, Usopp and Sanji alive?
-
and someone hasnt said it before you cater? everything that has been said in this thread has been regurgitated about 5 times already.
-
He's a fucking reindeer doctor. A REINDEER DOCTOR He can heal any wound.
Hello there dai amon
-
Okay, here's another one:
Am I the only one who finds weird that Sanji and Usopp always hang around in their own? Hell, even the recent filler made them to stick together as they looked for Robin without the others.
-
and someone hasnt said it before you cater? everything that has been said in this thread has been regurgitated about 5 times already.
probably, but his post was right after mine
-
I mean that's just silly
-
yeah 6 minutes. maybe he was browsing the thread before you posted and never saw your post?
-
He should watch his step
I don't play around
-
I mean that's just silly
Some of us share the same opinions, dont we =/ I was still going to say the same thing, whether or not you posted after me or not.
I don't play around
=/ Fine.
-
What's not silly about this thread, anyways?
-
I Lol'ed at Kaimei's sig.
There's some real pirate shit for you, punching a princess.

You were doing pretty well with the sarcastic Buggy post, but you just had to go and cry about it while throwing non-specific accusations like a an enraged chimpanzee.
You just failed your first social disaster.
Continue?
Y/N -
I agree- Buggy is defaming clowns and should be fined, imprisoned, and possibly shot out of a cannon. This is not sarcasm. Concerning the raging debate over what makes a 'real' pirate, or what pirates believed in or stood for, there are many, many books on the subject of pirates and piracy. I have even perused a few. What I have gleaned from them is that:
1. Most pirate crews were formed after a mutiny, generally by unscrupulous officers who saw little chance for advancement and lots of opportunity for plunder.
2. More than one pirate crew was later discovered to have had a ship's charter, which detailed such things as profit sharing and rules of conduct. The two examples I remember reading were straightforward and businesslike. Pirates didn't look at piracy as a lifestyle; to them, it was a profession.
3. Musicians were considered very important to pirate crews. On more than one occasion, people who might have been hanged as pirates claimed that they were, in fact, kidnap victims who had been allowed to live only because of their musical talent. One of the aforementioned charters even stated that musicians were entitled to a one-and-a quarter share, 25% more than any other hand aboard excepting officers!
So yeah, they liked to get drunk and party. They spent every penny they stole as fast as they made it. Few of them became rich and all of them wound up dead (as everybody does, eventually.)
Pirates? Who cares, they're interesting characters in a fun and zany story- let's let it go and discuss more about Buggy. I mean, what is with that hair!…..

Yeah…...this happens A LOT......haven't you noticed? After every arc they party and drink until they can't move and Luffy turns into 24 hour balloon form. and RARELY do they hold onto thier money, despite Nami's best efforts.

HMM?

@Mr.:
What is up with everyone's penchant for posting shitty VGcats comics?
HMM?
First time i've seen a VGCats comic here, and what's your problem with it anyways?
What is up with everyone's penchant for being mean? :D -
VGCats is probably best described as "as far away from funny as you can possibly get". That last Flash Movie he did was just awful, it wasn't funny at all, I didn't laugh, chuckle. I even read the news post because I was so assured he was joking. I expected something like "Haha, fooled you guys, the real comic is right here", but instead I got "Whew! It's finally done!"
And about this thread, why is it 7 pages (edit: 8 pages now!)? What the hell can you even discuss? Those of you who argue One Piece characters are Pirates, you're retarded, they're not normal pirates. Those of you who complain One Piece Pirates aren't real pirates, take a hint, they were never trying to be.
-
@Kitsune::
First time i've seen a VGCats comic here, and what's your problem with it anyways?
It's because VGCats are universally hated.
End of mystery.

Woops! I think Brooke wouldn't be able to use that one. XD
-
sure its been said a million times allready but i never had any problems accepting them as pirates since my definition of that word is basicly a sea criminal.
and since theyve broken lots of laws from continualy beating up law enforcers and breaking a shit load of public property to robbing people(even if its mostly pirates its still stealing) and really having no qualms about attempting to kill loads of people(Zoro mostly) they certainly qualify as such in my book.
-
So I guess you want Luffy and co. to shoot guns and rape bitches huh?
That would be a good change of plans huh?
-
I think it's worth mentioning that the fact the Straw-hats don't fit the real definition of pirates doesn't mean that all other pirates in the OP world are all perfectly nice people like them. Hell, I'd say that it's a pretty fair assumption that 98% of the pirates out there are the lovable evil bloodthirsty assholes that we expect them to be. Shanks might even be one of them these days, for all we know. And Whitebeard is obviously one of them, or else he'd never be able to feed his gigantic army of a crew.
How many altruistic pirates have we seen in OP, anyway?
-
Pirates do what they want to in OP. Its just Luffy never wants to do the bad things. He wants a good crew, he wants to seperate himself from the bad pirates. He is after the adventure, not the treasure. And he'll beat up anyone who gets in the way. He is still a criminal.
In the olden days, people viewed the sea as belonging to no one government. Pirates therefore had their own rules, you could be married at sea (didn't any of you watch PotC, that part was actually true…) and it counted. The captain was like a king and want he declared happened. Of course like any king someone will true to overthrow you. But thats life. Many pirates became pirates also because they didn't like their country, their targets therefore were often merchants belonging to certain people.
Luffy and co are enemies of the WG, not much different. They have rules, they party. Thats the way it goes. They've stolen (they didn't know Skypieans didn't treasure gold though, and they thought they had a cannon as a reaction to it. Their just stupid though). They've held hostages for brief moments (like 2 or 3 minutes). Nami has stolen from anyone, Zoro has killed. Chopper and Luffy have both attacked kings and all have attacked the Marines and WG somehow.
