FF IX was probably one of my least favorite FF games. SD characters, Kuja and the story just didn't do it for me. And I couldn't think of any character that I liked from the game. Nice battle system tho.
Epic Boss Fights
-
-
IX is probably my second or third favorite, after VII and XII. Yeah, I still have VII as one of my favorites, if only because it was the first FF game I ever played and the first truly "epic" game I'd ever played. In before 2 pages of posts about how overrated VII is.
About epic boss fights, pretty much every boss in Twilight Princess was epic in some way. I loved the bosses in that game, even if most of them were pretty easy. And yeah, all the FF fights mentioned here. I never beat Ultima Weapon in VIII or Ozma in IX either. And of course Shadow of the Colossus.
-
I thinking of another Metal Gear Solid Boss fight, from the first game…
Psycho Mantis. All of the little things they did leading up to that fight to demonstrate his "psychic powers" (Reading your memory card, asking you to put the controller on the ground if you were using a Dual Shock), and when you finally learn the trick to beat him, its like..."Holy Shit!"
The fight with Mantis is practically the personification of thinking outside of the box.

VIII IZ OVERATTED PLAY SUM 8
I really hated IX at first, but it really grew on me. Kuja was kind of lame IMO, but it's a nice switch to see that the main bad guy is a wizard instead of some ginormous muscle-bound moron. Character design wise, it's still really awkward looking to me, but I only really hate a few of the characters (Eiko and Freya, Freya not as much as Eiko)
-
Quina should become the face of Final Fantasy.
-
Quina gau and beowulf. Best ff chars
-
I think I'm the only person on the planet who puts Umaro in his final party.
-
yeah umaro was awesome. For ff 6 I had a hard time coming up with a stable final party because most the chars were great.the only char I really never used was gogo and mog
I used strago for a while basically for no reason except he's the only old guy in ff I can remember. His stats were horrible but he looked cool
-
Magus from Chrono Trigger was epic for me. The whole element-changing part what probably the main reason on what made it so memorable. I'm surprised that I beat him on my first try.
And man, I seriously want to find another copy of Final Fantasy IX. I can't find it anywhere, and my brother stole my copy and sold it to a pawn shop a few years back.
-
I thought frog vs magus one on one was pretty epic for ct standards
-
@Cap'n:
I think I'm the only person on the planet who puts Umaro in his final party.
I can't recall if I used him against Kefka or not, but I used Umaro in a party with Celes, Sabin, and Cyan quite a few times. Mainly because that was the easiest way to rack up tons of damage while still being able to Rune away a hefty chunk of the opponent's magic attacks.
-
I never had Umaro in my final party, but I did have him in one of the three parties you need to go through the final dungeon. I always leave Gau and Relm out.
-
raj thank you for that. I can't believe I haven't seen that image until now. That made my day.
I know this was posted two days ago but no problem. Kefka was the first RPG end boss I faced so he obviously is implanted into my brain as epicness embodied.
@Cap'n:
I think I'm the only person on the planet who puts Umaro in his final party.
I did once when I maxed everyone else out so I guess that doesn't really count.
Other bosses that I can think of are obvious ones like Gigyas and everyone from Chrono Trigger. Man I wish I had more time to waste on RPG's.
-
Out of all of the ones that I can come up with on the spot, these boss fights stand out for me:
Bob the Goldfish (Earthworm Jim 2) (FINISH HIM!)
Kefka (Final Fantasy 6)
Ganondorf (all four parts) (Twilight Princess)
Lavos (Chrono Trigger)
Ridley (Super Metroid) (after the underwater world's boss, it was nice (and challenging) to face someone who doesn't have any glitches that can be exposed to beat them)
King Blue (Viewtiful Joe) (cliched plot twist, but an awesome battle)
Revenge of Meta Knight (Kirby Superstar) (the entire mode was so awesome that I can't just pick one boss fight from it)
-
Although these aren't epic by most standards, I remember these fights being cool at the time (some are easy now):
Melbu Farmha from Legend of Dragoon
Meta Knight from Kirby Super Star
Jack the Ripper from Medievil 2
Those two clock owls from Okami (dissappointely easy, but I thought that they were pretty badass nonetheless) as well as the kitsune and yami.
Xemnas from KHII
Zeromus from FFIV
the Savato virus from Trauma Center
the two Pyramid Heads from Silent Hill 2
Both Fusion Dragons from the Golden Suns and Dullahan
and finally Ridley from Metroid (any game but the first, which I haven't played) -
For me, I'd have to say Snake vs. Colonel Volgin in Metal Gear Solid 3.
! I mean, it gave me goosebumps. Throughout the whole game I've been thinking that Volgin was a big guy behind all of the madness (although he really isn't the boss of the game), and seeing him torture Snake makes ya wanna beat him that much more.
As it came to the scene where Snake and Volgin meet face to face in battle, with both of them getting ready just seconds before they fight, it hit me. Snake is a bad*ss. I can't explain it, but this moment made me grow a liking to him… -
I have a not so epic boss that I think should be mentioned for sheer satisfaction.
Spiderman 2
Mysterio is a rather annoying villain you fight throughout the game. First he (as beck) challenges you to a crook gathering contest and an pain in the butt obstacle course. Then he attacks a theater and your stuck saving people and destroying robots in a burning building. Robots are easy enough, but they have bad timing and it can be hard to get enough height to swing the exit when saving people.
The he decides to remake lady liberty in his image so you have to swing across the bay via UFO's, up the statue and destroy the gizmo up top. No robots or anything, but it takes forever.
Afterwards you get to have some fun evading his funhouse HQ, and then you finally get to face him in the grandest of arenas. The 7-11 he's robbing. And you watch his life bar fills up not once, not twice, but three times. Then you punch him and his life bar empties once, twice, three times he's out!
Perhaps a one punch KO isn't very epic for a boss, but it was hilarious and it felt Wonderful!
-
Oh god…I couldn't get by that burning theater shit. That's where the game ended for me.
-
WOAH!!!! Have any of you seen what Necron is supposed to look like according to Amano?????
-
LOL at Vivi floating there with his arms up.
But yeah, DA-YUMN!
-
What the fuck, why doesn't he look like a giant head in the game, then?
-
I hope the fact that I can't spot Eiko in that picture is due to Amano having envisioned her as dying horribly before that point
-
Holy crap that's awesome.
I don't see Freya in that pic either.
-
Now that I think about it
I remember a LOOOOONG time ago in EGM there was a preview for FF9, and it had a bunch of Amano artworks to accompany characters. And for the life of me I can't remember seeing Freya or Eiko in there. I clearly remember Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, Steiner, Quina, and Amarant (then known mainly as "Salamander").
Freya was alright but fucking Eiko
terrible
-
Salamander was so great. It's a shame he was so fucking useless in the game. Unless you used infinite Gil or something.
WHO'S THE LAST GUY YOU GET? OH BOY, A GUY THAT THROWS SHIT!

No, I have that issue, both Freya and Eiko had Amano artwork to accompany them. I guess it also goes without saying that Eiko looked in no way like her in-game counterpart.
Man, Garnet and Eiko really got the shaft in terms of artwork didn't they? At least all the other characters had some noticeable features from Amano's original work :/
Salamander was so great. It's a shame he was so fucking useless in the game. Unless you used infinite Gil or something.
WHO'S THE LAST GUY YOU GET? OH BOY, A GUY THAT THROWS SHIT!
Amarant was awesome in the game. I kept using him for the "No Mercy" and "Return Magic" ability. I remember being like, YEAH FUCKIN' KAMEHAMEHA BITCHES!!
-
WOAH!!!! Have any of you seen what Necron is supposed to look like according to Amano????? http://www.ffcompendium.com/art/9-necron-a.jpg
…......."I'm a big kid now."
(Sorry, couldn't resist).
Awww, where's Freya? <( Quina, Vivi and Steiner are kick ass, though. -
Speaking of which….why the hell'd they change Amarant to Salamander???? What a dumb move. I'm not in the 'every change to the original is bad' group but....Salamander? Who okayed that????
-
Uh, you do realize that his name is Salamander in the original Japanese version, right? It's a reference to the depiction of the Salamander as a mythological creature throughout history, i.e. Salamander, the FFIX character, has red, fiery hair.
Not really sure why they changed it to Amarant in the English version, other than maybe a reference to the color of amaranth.
-
REALLY!? Is that what it was? Then by God, they made a winning choice by changing it!
I just remembered being really pissed off about it being changed. That must have been back when I was in my Quexinos Stage.
Apparently it has been a long time since I've played 9 ^O^;
-
Both names are fine – personally prefer Salamander. Don't bother asking why, though, because there ain't really any reason.
Am still a gigantic fan of Quina, on a different note. Easily one of the best characters that Square-Enix has pumped out.
-

Probably how many people feel about some of the VI names. I remember that many people like Sabin better than Mash.
The only name change I really thought was odd was Gilbert to Edward in IV. I actually like Edward better for a bard's name, but Edge's real name was already Edward. So the english versions of FFIV always have two Edwards.
-

I always thought it was hilarious how Quina would randomly get lost while with the party. Also the fact that Quina could eat the Earth Guardian.
-
That, and you never find out what fucking gender it is.
Always pegged it as a male, personally, but the fact that they never officially state it is what makes it so funny.
-
Really, I always thought of Quina as a female, mostly due to the simple fact that I wanted the male/female ratio to be the same. Stupid reason I know.:ninja:
-
Maybe it's personally some sort of festering inner cross-dressing persona emerging? Because Quina wore lots of pink. And lace.
Have always been really fond of wearing frilly dresses. Oh my…
-

I like Quina as well, I don't see why everybody hates on it(?). Something funny, I found out the other day that Quina's name is apparently a pun or something in Japanese.

Apparently the way it;s written can be translated as either Gilbert or Edward. I haven't looked at how it was originally written, so it's hearsay on my part… (I'm just starting Japanese, and I'm very bad at it...)
-
Speaking of Amano this made me lol
edit: I love his Garland.
-
Haha, I just read a plot summary of FF9.
I didn't think of it at the time but it's basically Scientology: The Game
-
I wish Garland had a bigger role in FFIX. I fucking loved his design.
I kind of pegged Quina as a male, because most FF games have 3 females in the main party.

That settles it, the mystery is solved.
Necron = Xenu
-

You seriously just blew my fucking mind, because from IV to XII (minus XI) that's true. Unless I'm forgetting someone somewhere.
-

Here's what Wikipedia says on the FFIV character section:
ギルバート
Gilbert/Gilbartand
エドワード
Edward (for Edge) -
Damn now I want to go find a copy of 9 and play it again
-
We didn't hear about Necron beforehand because he was trapped in his battery cave.
-
All this talk about character designs prompted me to dig out my copy of "The Art of Final Fantasy IX". I can't help but think that Amano just used an old Celes image for Dagger as the two look exactly alike.
Anyway, since I had it out….
-
Yeah, I have that image. I fucking loved Tanatlus, I wish they had a larger role (Baku should've become a party member).
I'm pissed off because the Barnes and Noble used to have that book in stock a long time ago when I was younger, and I'd often flip through it and planned to buy it some. And then one day, it vanished and I never saw it again.
-
Is it just me, or does Marcus really have a few features resembling Locke from VI?
-
Baku's look there reminds me of the Cid from FF4. It's the beard and goggles; I always liked the Tantalus group though. I heard there were codes to put them in place of the main party; I never did it myself though.
-
What? No first person shooters?
Dagon - Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Antlion Defense - Half-Life 2: Episode Two
and… I suppose... Olga Flow - Phantasy Star Online: Episode Two
But there's no good video of him around beginning-to-end without someone adding their own music. -
Shadow of the Collosus. The whole game.
And I don't know why but that King Blue guy, was that his name, in Viewtiful Joe was great.
All this talk about FF games… I still haven't beaten VI. I think I have my third try going on but I just can't bring myself to finish it. One of these days.
Antlion defense was all sort of cool but I prefered the batte against Striders by far.
Ah, there's just too many of these.
