@Captain-Krupp They definitely keep it around for consistency, even though they haven't been good at that lately lol. Back when they made the gold logo it wasn't to show it was the "true" version (since the blue version is the most recognizable and on-brand one anyway), it was during a time in the 2000s when Funimation had a penchant for redesigning or creating their own logos for each show, even if the default logos were serviceable (like Dragon Ball GT for example). In One Piece's case it definitely helped differentiate it from 4Kids, but given their track record like I said it was simply something they did for many of their shows at the time... so it really isn't as special as it seems it is.
I'd argue the gold logo is not only unnecessary but it's a bigger pain in the ass than it needs to be since they have to go out of their way to edit it in, sometimes making awkward-ass edits like in Bon Voyage. Also, redoing the entire typeface and getting rid of the Luffy silhouette makes it inferior IMO.
I think I realized another reason, even if its not the real one, I think they did it becausa for better or worse the dub had to be credited as "Shonen Jump's One Piece" and if they kept the blue logo it could have been confused for 4kids Shonen Jump's One Piece dub.
Like I said Funimation remade their logos for almost all of their shows at the time, so the fact it differentiates it from the 4Kids version is an added bonus, but I do not believe that was their intention. The dub aimed to be much more faithful to the Japanese version... which also uses the blue logo. The gold logo just kind of makes it its own thing for the sake of making it its own thing.
Also, the network (and marketing in general) didn't treat the Funimation dub any differently from the 4Kids dub either, and that also goes for the more limited markets at the time, which didn't have as big of a global reach as the 4Kids dub. Most casual audiences at the time couldn't really tell the difference between both dubs either, only that the rap was gone and voices were changed. It was just another DBZ or Pokemon voice cast change scenario.
The logo change wasn't to make some big statement about how different the show was, it was just a in-house trend that they used to add extra flare to their logos at the time simply because they could.
