Chapter 1064: Egghead Labophase

@danie or at some point in the manga we will get to see a glimpse of future gone "wrong", where Luffy is less Garp and more decrepit old man.
Just think the comment is weird and out of place unless it alludes to something.
As for Luffy surviving until 70? I think it's highly unlikely, with everything he put his body through, even if it weren't for Emporio actually shortening his life directly.
-
I saw as simply Oda wanting to show Luffy as a weak old man, but without triggering people into thinking that’s how he will end up. So he added the “alternate future” bit so people don’t see it as a foreshadow or hint of what is in store for Luffy’s future.

Another good chapter! This one didn't flow quite as well as the last ones, partly because of the many settings.
The panels with Sakazuki didn't really add anything to the chapter, apart from the feeling how boring Sakazuki has become post-time skip. Every time he appears, he's just complaining about stuff and looks totally incompetent.
I was relatively confused by the different timelines in the chapter cover and the actual chapter itself, to the point I first thought it might be someone else than Van Augur next to Kuzan.
The D fight was great! It was good to see the Heart Pirates doing stuff and it's always fun to see BB getting his ass kicked (before he inevitably stomps his opponent). It's a tad disappointing that it seems like "Black Vortex" is the beginning of the end of every Blackbeard fight but then again, with Haki taking away some of the darkness power's uniqueness, it might make sense to show how much of a threat Teach's power nullification is to any ability user.

Kuzan must be thinking "and I lost a leg for this shit?" right now. XD

I think it is just a joke reminding the volume 89 SBS question where Luffy is shown in a good and "another" future. This is just a 4th wall breaking from Oda, nothing to search deeply for
-
@Razh Yeah, we saw a bad version of Luffy at age 70 this chapter, but if Oda wanted us to believe that's how Luffy would actually end up, he would not have wrote "in a different future". He would just write "in the future".
It is weird because I don't think most people would actually think that's how Luffy would end up anyways. Maybe we'll be seeing how Luffy would actually look like at age 70 later in the arc.
As for Luffy being able to naturally reach age 70 or not; the story will likely end with him still being 19(in his twenties at most), so I don't care.

@wolfwood if he will make a new raid suit for sanji, will it be a sailor moon pantsless raid suit.
-
I read that as panties raid suit, which would something Sanji would want.

It's honestly odd to me that people are excited about the idea that the cover story and main story are converging. To me it's just another example of Oda's inconsistencies as of late. It feels like he's speeding through the story, but it still incapable of being concise with cover stories. For years they've been so much more drawn out than they've needed to, and it feels like here he realized, "oh fuck, Pudding's supposed to already have been captured, but I spent too many chapters of the cover story showing ambiguous shots and not actually moving that story forward."
-
he could have drawn Blackbeardand Law's fight anytime. It is obviously don on purpose

Agree to disagree. I understand the overall sentiment with Oda not being as good of a writer as before but honestly you’re the first person I see bringing this up and to me it’s a nonissue. Maybe I’m being generous with Oda but then again maybe you are just finding little things to use as examples of his inconsistencies. To each tbeir own, after all.
-
I find more amusing that even Oda is so bored by the Germa that he wrote them out of their own cover story.

You might have a point if he was between arcs when he started the Blackbeard/Law fight... but instead he did a random cutaway two chapters into an arc which is unprecedented, and he could have done at any time.
Oda realized he could do an interesting thing and synch up the cover and the main story... so he did.
He absolutely had some pacing issues with the end of Wano in terms of prioritizing cliffhanger surprises over story flow (Yamato) but having the cover story match with a side story in the main chapter is not a pacing mistake, he opted to have it happen this way. So that he could show pudding captured one page and then int he main story the next.
Heck, assuming he sped up the cover story to accomodate the main is strange when its the main story he interrupted in an unprecedented way to match the cover, while the cover has been flowing pretty normally.
-
@GreatLiver Nah. This was very deliberate. There is definitely some padding the moment Germa finds Caesar.
-
I'll 100% cop to my feelings on it being impacted by the fact that I don't love the Teach/Law fight popping up as it did. For the first time in a decade we had the SHs setting off fresh not bound to some tagalong from a previous arc (not counting Caribou because his inclusion is more like furniture and he's not directing their movement), and two chapters in we pivot away from them for half of the chapters to see what Law's up to. It just seems super odd that wasn't part of the post-arc rather being placed immediately into the new arc. I don't hate cover stories matching up with the main story in theory, it just seems to me in this case the inclusion of the novelty was at the expense of pacing the story better.
Is it that he needed a couple more chapters to set up the Pudding thing in the cover story before showing her in the chapters, so he pushed back Law/Blackbeard? Maybe but I doubt it. If that were the case again it just emphasizes how plodding cover stories are now. And it's not helped by breaks, meaning a larger ratio of chapters get color spreads, slowing cover stories down even further.

I just remembered something: Shouldn't Sentomaru be around Egghead somewhere? He is with the Science Unit, after all.
-
@Johnny-B-Decent
Sentomaru became full fledged marine over timeskip. It seems to me like he has been station there instead of being with VP -
But he is still with the Marines' Science Unit, just not VPs bodyguard anymore.
Him not involving in this would be kinda wasted. Especially since he's the former bodyguard and CP0 is about to assassinate VP. -
