@Robby:
Usopp didn't decide he was the canon guy or declare his dream until well after he joined. And they didn't know Brook was a musician until after his invite.
So then what you're saying is that Yamato can join, but we don't yet know what skill they have to establish their role?
I can gel with that if Oda manages to find a position the crew needs, but what is left? This goes back to why I think we will have an apprentice, because its one of the few or only positions available.
@Coookie:
This can be easily solved though, make Yamato another combatant, or him the main combatant and promote Zoro to official vice captain. Or if we go by his ability to make hard choices under highly pressured environments as you said, he can be a tactician, something that was also brought up for Jimbei. People have also mentioned logkeeper (Oden joined at least 13 years after Roger set sail so Yamato joining too late for that is not an argument), stonemason (Oden might have passed on that knowledge in his journal and someone ought to make an updated version of Poneglyphs), apprentice (inexperienced newbie in contrast to the powerhouse he is makes for funny situations), … And again, most people didn't make Jimbei's joining dependent on which role he could fill, maybe you did.
Combatant is such a vague title that pretty much everyone has as a secondary role. I like the idea of logkeeper though, because its basically a continuation of Odens journal.
It's easy to make Oden the scapegoat in hindsight but as you said, even if Oden was aware of something being afoot in Wano he couldn't have known that Orochi was teaming up with Kaido and how everything develops. I wouldn't call that carelessness.
Of course he couldn't foresee this, but you can expect people that have survived the past 20 years not to hastily make the same mistake.
It took all of the scabbards to fight Kaido, while Yamato did this singlehandedly. I'm not saying that Yamato is stronger than the entirety of the scabbards, but it showcases their strength above everyone else in Wano. Another reason why Yamato standing by Momonosuke's side makes sense.
But it's achieved if Yamato specifically stays in Wano? How so? And no, I don't count the Oguchi-no-Makami because we haven't seen a single reference to the Wanoese population revering this deity and because the Akazaya are also Guardian Deities.
Because of Yamatos strength and ability to guide and follow Odens ambitions.
Yamato is already doing his best by fighting on Luffy's and Momo's side, the arc will definitely not end without Momo making it perfectly clear that a child does not bear their parents' sin (a plot thread that conveniently is left to be tied with the whole Kurozumi clan deal), and good thing that you mentioned Jimbei because Yamato can be just as easily absolved of his guilt without needing to repent by serving Wano.
Yamato isn't responsible for the actions of their father, but would still feel some degree of responsibility, if not just from carrying on the will of Oden.
Do you mean to say that no one else can do the same and because Yamato did it that one time he's the only one who will ever be able to?
Anyone can do this, but Oda specifically showcased Yamato doing this, despite being in Momonosukes life for less than half a day.
Yup, that's the only thing Yamato can do for Momo that no one else can, tell him about the Azure Dragon's abilities.
Yamato brings a lot to the table that nobody else can, and relaying the uses of Momonosukes devil fruit from their experience being around Kaido is a great example among many. It'll likely become the reason why Onigashima doesn't fall on the capitol.
We don't know if that's the only way to support the Dawn, if Yamato needs to babysit Momo for that. But we know that Yamato believes with all his heart that Luffy is the man his idol has been waiting for. Now, when Yamato was free to choose who to support, who did he choose before?
Yamato wanted to go to sea with Ace and his friends. That dream died with Ace, and in my opinion has switched focus to Odens dream to open Wano.

You mean Yamato has protected Momo more than Kin'emon or Luffy? How much did Momo develop under Yamato's tutelage when he's still afraid and unsure of taking charge? For whom did Momo make the decision to attack the strongest creature alive and to sacrifice 20 years of his life?
You're basically arguing that Kinemon and Luffy had more influence, while ignoring the fact that they were both with Momonosuke since Punk Hazard. Yamato hasn't had a chance to showcase this influence beyond the latter half of this war.
They've been in that cave together for ten days, not years. You're grossly misremembering something there.
Oooh thats my mistake, it should have had more text which I've accidentally edited out. I meant to refer to Yamato being locked up for years with little positive influence other than the Daimyo and Odens journal. No doubt Yamato was privy to a vast wealth of knowledge being the offspring of an emperor.
Yamato has been imprisoned on Onigashima for 20 years and had to rely on people like Ace to get information, or on Oden's journal. What makes you think Yamato was knowledgable or informed about history especially when it comes to Wano that none of the other Akazaya or Yakuza have?
I think this is reflected in Yamatos ability to fight, lead and manage in this war.
@King:
Kin'emon and Kiku are currently dying because she left Momo and Shinobu alone to deal with Kanjuro and then Kaidou.
I'm not sure how is that good judgment when she didn't leave out of common sense, only her own personal impulses to fight her dad.
You can't blame everything negative on Yamato. They have had a larger impact on a breadth of wins throughout the war, and have probably succeed farther than anyone else. Protecting Momonosuke, fighting Kaido, freezing the bombs, encouraging Momonosuke to make the clouds and continue fighting etc.
This is level of attention all aims towards not becoming a crew member, but allowing the continuation of Wano under the leadership of Momonosuke.
@electricmastro:
Can't believe I didn't realize sooner how Yamato could become the samurai of the crew.
We have Zoro already.
The thing that bugs me most about Yamato right now, is that some people can't decide on which dream Yamato is going to follow, and cherry pick either one depending on which argument is presented.
Either Yamato will follow Odens dream to restore and open Wano, or leave for the sea despite ace being dead. You can't have both within a short period of time.
On a side note: I'm really excited to see the outcome of this debate, because in my mind it'll either follow the similar patterns that I recognise (which is good for my ego or something), or go in a completely new direction and leave me utterly dumfounded as to where Oda takes this…..
….because right now my imagination looks a little bit like this.
