Neon Genesis Evangelion

I've just decided to disengage since it's obvious he's not actually engaging with anything I'm saying. He latches onto his interpretation of things and then refuses to see anything else.
Been there done that.

What should I watch after finishing the anime ?
-
-
-
Well, I'm gonna have to give a look at both I guess.
The second one seems to be a videogame/manga, or did I get something wrong ?

I read the manga, well in both instances.

End of Evangelion is a more robust retelling of the last two episodes of the Anime with a different thematic ending. It's the natural next place to go.
I'd then try the manga honestly. It's a more detailed retelling of the anime with some interesting changes, one of which being it includes the ending from End of Evangelion but with the ending changed to be more thematically in line with the TV series which I find incredibly interesting, even if the last chapter is a TAD confusing in how it presents the Epilogue.
! Shinji rejects instrumentality for positive reasons (to feel joy) instead of negative reasons like he does in the OG EoE (where he wants people to feel fear again) like in the TV Series. It actually shows what happens when humanity as a whole is restored post Instrumentality which is the one odd thing since everyone seems to not remember anything. They don't remember the Angels, NERV, the Evas, or even each other as Shinji and Askua meet again for the first time in this but Shinji seems happy and hopeful like he was at the end of the TV Series and it looks like he and Asuka might even be friends.
Then check out the Rebuilds.
Everything else is gravy including The Shinji Ikari Raising Project which is an AU Manga spinoff.

I dunno, Kodocha Eva is pretty good.
-
So I never actually watched the original Eva, my only knowledge about it being "Shinji get in the damn robot" and spoiling myself on how everyone melts into goo in the end.
Then Gintama helped spoil the "Congratulations" ending, and at that point I decided to jump in with the Rebuild series, which I gotta say I'm really enjoying. After I then went for the ending in the manga, and I reeeeeallly like that one better than everyone… melting.
I'm hoping the Rebuild manages a happy ending. Psychological no hope stories are just... no thank you for me.

Rin's cat one wins. No contest. The hundred reis bumped it up to passable but there is no gratuitous religious imagery, cat angels or actual human trauma.
I don't remember if this one was posted here:
But I am partial to this one:

Regular Show was something else, man.

Have you seen Kodomo No Omocha? Its way funnier when you're thinking of Sana as Asuka and Akito as Shinji are hilarious because… they are not those people at all.
Also seeing the opening being parodied helps I guess.

I'm not sure you have a good grasp of what happens in the end, lol

Something about everyone losing their natural fields that held their individualities together? Tbh I only have wikipedia to fall on ahaha 8D;
Curious though, how do people here who've watched the original feel about the Rebuilds? Do they go in a better direction? Too different? What are your expectations?

Neither anime endings (original and film) are quite like that, honestly, although that's part of the process and the idea. More importantly, it's exactly what the story needed, so it's not as weird as it sound even though it's a big what the fuck.

Haven't watched the Rebuilds yet, but I will. Have high hopes for good stuff, but it's hard to beat the original anime even with better animation.

Rebuilds aren't as good. They introduce a lot of pointless stuff. Or at least stuff that as of yet hasn't served much purpose. Still interested in where they go though since they're not exactly remakes.

i'm rewatching it rn and it has such a good rythim! the episodes go by really fast, if i'm not careful I can go 4-6 episodes right away
i've never seen anything else besides the original series. is The End of Evangelion still recomended?

End of Eva is an alternate ending that is much more visceral. It has some things in common with the TV ending but in general I think its message is different, though some people believe the two endings take place concurrently. It has incredible visuals though. Definitely worth watching.
As far as the script thing, I haven't watched the show/movie with it, but I do think that a lot of people who are attached to the original way they watched a series will always be hesitant about a new translation. It happens with all kinds of anime all the time. I especially agree with the notion that "I'm so fucked up" is not a good translation of what Shinji says and in general a lot recently I think translators have started taking way too much leeway with their translations. Especially in cases where they try and force translations that sound stupid on things that aren't as easily translated to the point where the translation is more confusing than just leaving the Japanese (mostly in terms of honorifics or things like onii-san and variations of it). With some series the people who originally watched/read it got used to the extreme liberties and "flavor" added by the translators so a translation not as "flavored" sounds wrong even if it's a better translation.
-
Good Translations dont always make better scripts. I dont think I am the right person to explain but I think Rin might be the one to ask. She is a wiz at Eva.
-
just torrent the fan modified ADV translations they are both accurate and good
-
I have personally never seen a good translation that didn’t make for a better script.
I have seen bad translations that people accept as better scripts.
-
Rin got her wish! GUESS WHO'S BACK!?
-
Thoughts? No-one?
-
I liked it. Lotsa LOTSA gobbledygook that will be slightly less confusing in futire viewings. I need to go back and rewatch 3.0 with a newer appreciation.
-
Watched all the films this weekend. Rebuild finally confirms itself to be a sequel to the manga and TV series. Kind of obvious given the first film, though I’m glad to see how Kaworu ended up being the key to all of it. It’s also nice to see Shinji and Gendoh get that resolution — as well as Shinji finally standing up. It may be the perfect ending.
-
Agree. I can now let go of my anger and apreciate what 3.0 did.
-
I really enjoyed that first half of the last movie. The self discovery of Ayanami and the slow recovery of Shinji really vibed with me. And I like the sense of time in it. And I like that this growth for Shinji allowed Gendo to be analyzed beyond the stoic and unflinching villain and have Shinji be the leading man to his recognizing his fears and vulnerabilities. And while I dont get what the hell happened at the end it gave me a certain sense of plenitude that I enjoyed.
-
So I just finished watching 3.0 myself, and wow that was a lot.
I think I managed to get the gist of things, but definitely gonna have to wiki a couple things to try and piece everything together now.
In the meantime… anyone wanna try and tldr what happened at the end there?

First time reading Neon Genesis Evangelion.
I picked up the Perfect Edition by Carlsen Manga and let me say this, if there ever comes out a perfect edition of One Piece, please do it like those Neon Genesis Evangelion Volumes.I haven't watched and I don't know much about the series. All I know is that Japan is crazy about mechs and that's it.
I've read the first volume, the art is great and the included colour pages are gorgeous.
The volume opened with an introduction to whats going on, on earth. Fast forward to 2015 and we see a boy who's lost at a train station when an angel attacks and fights against an EVA. The EVA isn't able to stop it and nukes don't work against it, too. First off, why let a EVA fight against an angel and when he loses throw some nukes at them and that angel still survives.
The boys father is the one responsible for the EVA project which is humanities last hope against the angels.
So in anime and manga logic, it's natural that both of them are estranged and the father choses his son to be one of the kids who are supposed to fight in those giant mechs. Boy gets into the mech after his father wants to but an injured girl inside it, who lost to the angel previously. The boy is able to control the EVA with ease, which should not be a surprise to anyone by now. First the angel overpowered him and the boy is not able to control the robot anymore. Yet the boy somehow can still move with the robot and beats the angel up and destroys it.Premise of the story is interesting enough and like I said the art is awesome. Nevertheless the first volume doesn't deliver IMO, since I know it has a lot of fans I belief it will change in the coming volumes.

you should keep in mind you're reading a knock off inferior version, and that when people talk about evangelion they are talking about the anime

I watched the anime series and I read the manga so I do know both. It is a little bit harsh to say knock off. The production cycle of the anime series and its troubles are an important factor. Anno changed the scripts of the last two episodes multiple times. The outrage was so large in newspapsers that 2 movies were made to change the ending. The manga had more time to develope the story and they changed certain aspects with intent. I do not like the artstyle how the "brushes" were used in the manga at all but it is not an inferior version. LOL
Speaking of knock off, I have never watched the newer 2007 movies Shin Evangelion/Rebuild of Evangelion. Are those movies any good?

Obviously the anime has the advantage of color and music and sound, but the manga story is overall better, even if it's the same story. Because they had more time, no budget concerns, and could smooth over Anno's worst impulses..
It's not in any way a cheap knockoff and it stands on its own merits, and the changes it made were good. If I ever feel like experiencing the story again, the manga is what I'm going to revisit, in the same way after reading the Nausicaa manga I can't ever go back to the film.

They're not in any way knock off.
Initially, they're pitched as just a retelling with better animation. And honestly? They are worth it for that. While its pretty dull in the first movie when they're doing the talking parts and recreating things shot for shot but slightly prettier and it seems super pointless, once they actually get to the action sequences it legitimately made the case that it was a worthwhile effort to do because they were drastically improved and very very much worth seeing.
I'm not usually one to say spectacle alone is worth it, but in this case its SUCH a jump in quality and improvement , its just leagues better for the action stuff, and if that had been all the remakes did, it would legitimately have been enough and everyone would have been okay with that.
And then at one point in the second movie, one event radically changes and it ceases to be a straight retelling and becomes a very different branch path instead and you no longer have the safety of knowing what happens next.
The third and fourth movies are wholly original and probably overall the best ending for the series.
Movie 3 was rough on its own during the 9 year wait for its second half and widely disliked at the time because it did some things... but both halves are out and it's now very recontextualized, and that wait is no longer an issue, so they can be appreciated as a full story now and the ending is overall pretty good and what we really should have gotten all the back with End of Eva.

So in volume 2, there is finally some character development for Shinji and Misato. I am already in love with pen pen. The art is amazing and with where volume 2 ended it seems like Shinji came to terms with being a EVA pilot.
I wish the opening where Shinji sits in the school would have been the first chapter of the series. Opening with a history lesson might be boring, but IMO it does so much for the world building of the series.
For whatever reason, it took the angels 15 years to reappear and now that Shinji is sort of a capable pilot for EVA its the second coming of an angel within days. I hope Rei gets better sometime soon and we meet the other pilots.
