Of all the Straw Hats, I feel only Robin has been severely neglected. But I feel that's about to change.
For a while, I felt that Chopper and Robin where the Straw Hats that had the least amount of spotlight in the New World, but then Chapter 1005 and Chapter 1007 fortunately came along to give them some.

I assume that this "Yonko Saga" focused more on Luffy and his rise to "Emperor level", but after it the other Straw Hats will get increased importance as they catch up to become a proper Pirate King crew.
My expectations are for Robin and Jinbe to get the spotlight on Mary Geoise, then Chopper and Franky in Vegapunk arc, and Usopp and the 11th on Elbaf.
Wano predictions: There will be 5 acts; All Straw Hats will get fights, some in Act 4; Big Mom Pirates will arrive; Carrot will have her moment, but won't join; Yamato will be a Kouzuki samurai and Wano's Guardian; Shanks will visit Luffy in Act 5; Next arc is Mary Geoise.

Luffy is the leading main character that's responsible for leading the rest as captain in the first place, so I never assumed that everyone else would have enough time to get exactly the same amount of development and focus as he did, but all things considered, I think it has worked out for all of them.

I mean, Luffy is obviously the main character. He gets the biggest spotlight in every arc, and he never skips an arc. Even before the timeskip, there was the whole Amazon Lily/Impel Down/Marineford saga that was entirely about him, and other Straw Hats would skip or get minor roles in some arcs (like Little Garden, when Usopp and Luffy were the main characters, while Nami, Vivi and Zoro were trapped and Sanji was off-screened).
But I feel the New World have a bigger focus on Luffy, especially from WCI onwards. I think the crew will get more moments after Wano, with Luffy still being the main character, but having less to learn and improve over the course of each arc.
Well, how many of them did things Goku couldn't do?

It's not just moments, but that Luffy very much couldn't have gotten as far as he did without their help, which I think is what really counts.

Not only that, but those moments are part, often the highest point, of small character arcs. You can't have Usopp learning Observation without him first lying to the Tontattas, then finding his resolve to save them, then "defeating" Sugar by luck, then getting his followers and God moniker, then getting a 5-star bounty, then having to defeat Sugar for real to save Luffy, and so on. People often forget all that attention because not every single moment is a highlight.
Sounds kinda silly to support an oversized crew while being well aware that most are going to be backround characters at best.
The alliances and the Grand Fleet already provide a solution for all those characters that can't join but want to be friends with Luffy still.
Yamcha was created to be a main character, but the ever growing main cast of Dragon Ball ended up pushing him way too deep into a 'supporting character' pit.
Nowadays, Toei Animation still treats him as such, lmao.
There was a time where I couldn't forgive Toriyama for not having one earthling Z fighter keep up after the Saiyan saga. All those guys dying and training with King Kai was a waste. Could've just introduced a new person to push things forward.
Got over it when he left Piccolo in the dust after Namek. Pretty much accepted there'll never really be another human threat to Goku. Even now the idea of wishing to be the strongest in the universe is made by some random alien when there are dragon balls on earth.

I've been leaning toward a final crew total of 13 for some time, and given that I think one of those is likely to be Vivi, who is already established as a character and essentially just needs to be brought up to speed, that basically leaves us with Yamato (who's not yet official, but has made his intentions pretty damn clear) and one other to go.
I definitely get the "Too many characters" critique, but honestly, we already have 10 Strawhats (11, if we include Yamato) and that number isn't going to go down. While the difference between say 4/5 central characters and 10 is a lot, I don't think the difference between having 10/11 and having 13 is all that noteworthy.

They have 3 or 4 focus characters, another 3 or 4 prominent secondaries, then ignore the rest entirely. Half of MHA's cast might as well not exist, they're purely there to fill out the room. Fairy Tale was a huge guild but you only ever saw 4 of them. Naruto ignored everyone except him and Sasuke.
Negima is the only series I can think of that had a giant roster that was doing good about giving everyone time… until it ended super abruptly.
Assassination Classroom comes to mind as well but that too ended after two seasons.
Definitely focused on the classmates better than MHA while still focusing a lit on the teacher/mentor.

Now that Vegeta is always going to be Goku's #2. He gets dedicated focus.
The only other person that gets tons of focus is Future Trunks and that's only when he shows up with a problem he cant solve.
Overall, including Bulls and the new kids that's 12 ppl. Not sure if you want to fit in Fat Bug and Hercule/Mr. Satan.

Oda was struggling with too many crews at once he split the crew in Dressrosa and even then he introduced so many side characters he kinda forgot to develop his main.
So I think too many character was and will stay a problem for OP.
I don't think Oda forgot at all. I think he intended from the outset to make Dressrosa mostly how it is from a character development perspective. It was basically Law's arc that also had a Vivi and Cobra to flesh out the situation in the country.

Plus showcasing the seven Captains that would form the Grand Fleet.
Everything after Punk Hazard was about gathering allies. WCI had Bege, the Firetanks and the Sun Pirates. Wano has the entire ninja-pirate-mink-samurai Alliance and the Nine Scabbards.
Theoretically, after Wano the Straw Hats will resume being a small crew and most of those allies will exit the story… at least for a time.

That might have seemed possible early on, but as time went on, the more closely linked Yamato seemed to get with Luffy even though they haven’t met with each other again in almost a year’s worth of manga, with Luffy giving Yamato freedom, Yamato’s desire to bring the dawn to the world, and challenging an Emperor in contrast to Big Mom’s children hesitating to challenge Big Mom.

Yamato doesn't have a crew, and there's like no reason for Yamato to not end up doing what he has declared multiple times already, going with Luffy specifically.
If the crew was going to be huge, there was also no reason to keep recruiting people from PH to this point, and all those years we've only build alliances and the Grand Fleet instead.

That's not the main cast. That's the crew that was in theory fighting the androids when that opening was made.
Chouzu was NEVER main cast. And that's leaving out Bulma and Roshi. And Chichi. And Oolong, Puar who were both in the original first arc. And Yajirobe who was introduced to be a major player and then fell to the side really fast. . Plus the android additions, 17, 18, and Mr. Satan. Plus the Buu saga additions, Goten, Videl, Buu. And Frieza at this point.

Dragonball had a large main cast. Only 5 of them got consistent focus once the series got to the Z portion. (Goku, Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, Bulma) They were generally much better represented in the first half.

Yamato declared that he'd be travelling with Luffy and put more faith into him than even Chopper did. That on top of all the other stuff like waiting for him for 3 years and knowing the secret dream and all the covers and things??

I genuinely believe that things with Yamato have been pretty clear, evident and straightforward, that in a couple of months, it wouldn't even matter if the Vivre Card does the funny stuff and makes Yamato share slot eleven along with Merry.
That said, I don't have any idea of how long it could take for Yamato's Vivre Card to be launched.
Ehh I mean, I support the heck out of Yamato and the story really has hammered in the focus on him and that he wants to leave with the Straw Hats and support Luffy, and there is no obvious legitimate reason why he wouldn't become a full-fledged member of the crew. But in contrast to others I don't think this is a done deal, there is still a non-zero probability that something comes in between, even if I find it incredibly unlikely.
It'll be a while until Yamato gets his Vivre Card so the story might reach a point before then where I can see it as confirmed as others already do, but if Yamato gets to share the 11th or 12th spot with a ship then I think absolutely no one can still deny that Yamato is gonna join, not as an honorary/temporary member but as an equal.

I'm still looking forward to analyze his fight with Kaido.
What I feel is going to happen is that Yamato will reach the rooftop and occupy Kaido for a while, preventing him from claiming victory. Yamato won't believe Luffy is defeated (at least initially) and will argue with Kaido. Over several chapters, as an ongoing event we see in small bits, they fight, then Yamato will reveal his hybrid form. At some point, Yamato will be defeated and taunted. At that point, we get a flashback, and Luffy returns after this flashback.
What will make or break Yamato's chances over these scenes is how he's portrayed:
- Will Yamato's fight show some interesting attacks and fighting style, or will he just be Kaido Jr. with mostly generic blunt attacks?
- Will Yamato's power have special attributes beyond a beast form, or will it just be a cool form for him to show off once?
- Will Yamato believe in Luffy until the end, or will his conviction crumble over time?
- Will the flashback be about Yamato's childhood (Kaido as antagonist, lost mentor figure introduced), or about Kaido (origin, story with Rocks, Yamato's birth, expectations for Yamato)?
- Will the flashback be long and emotional (like Law's) or short and expositive (like Big Mom's)?
- Will Yamato have chance to prove himself to the Straw Hats, or will his role be just to tie loose plot points in Wano?
If you wish/expect Yamato to join, hope the first option happen in all or most of those questions.
I'm leaning towards mostly the second options. I don't think Wano will get a second long flashback. I feel Kaido is more likely to be the focus of the flashback. I feel Yamato's desperation may reach its peak just before Luffy arrives. Let's see if I'm wrong.

I suppose the biggest question at this point is what dream/ambition she’d have that would help steer her away from her past troubles. All things considered, the most likely ambition that could be specified at this point is the desire to bring the rest of the world to the new dawn after opening Wano. I don’t think Yamato ever said that she’d sail with Luffy specifically to bring the world to the new dawn, but with wanting to safeguard Momo for the new dawn and learning what kind of dream Luffy wants to achieve, I doubt she’d stop caring after leaving Wano.

What I found interesting is the choice of words. Whether the member is asking Luffy (Brook at the end of TB, Robin, Usopp asking to come back after the breakup) or Luffy is asking them, the phrase "be my/your nakama" (English translations turning this into "join the crew") is always used. Meanwhile Oda seems to be conscientious to so far have Yamato say "board your ship" or "go out to sea with him". In my theory-crafting mind this could point to a couple of possible outcomes:
A) These smaller moments are leading to contrast a bigger moment near the end of the arc where Yamato or Luffy phrases the proposal properly. Indeed, Luffy showed that he doesn't automatically trust a person he meets right away, but that it's possible to earn his trust in under 5 minutes as well.

Its even possible that Yamato already has somewhat a vague idea of an island or location but needs to go to Laugh Tale to track it down.
Any reason to go to Laugh Tale would most likely have to do with the Dawn from what I’ve seen, in light of her telling about a Momo about it and the next generation of pirates coming to overtake the emperors. Not sure how that will be done of course, but as usually I’m sure we’ll find out more as we go along.
I went back and reread/rewatched the scenes where everyone else gets asked/asks to be part of the crew to refresh my memory since this is the first time in a while a lot of people agree that a stand-out candidate has popped up. What I found interesting is the choice of words. Whether the member is asking Luffy (Brook at the end of TB, Robin, Usopp asking to come back after the breakup) or Luffy is asking them, the phrase "be my/your nakama" (English translations turning this into "join the crew") is always used.
I’ll collect the panels later when I have time but your theory/pattern doesn’t work if it only applies to a few members. “Join the crew” wasn’t used for everyone so that it hasn’t been used with Yamato yet doesn’t mean something’s up with that plot thread.
Edit: No actually, the burden of proof is on you to provide sources when all current members have used the phrase "join the crew" or are asked

All the strawhats are speaking to Luffy. Carrot is speaking to Pedro. Not comparable. Sure, Carrot could have that heart-to-heart with Luffy, but it hasn't happened, and it probably won't unless Luffy takes an interest in Perospero. Or Carrot aims for Kaido for some strange reason.

All the strawhats are speaking to Luffy. Carrot is speaking to Pedro. Not comparable. Sure, Carrot could have that heart-to-heart with Luffy, but it hasn't happened, and it probably won't unless Luffy takes an interest in Perospero. Or Carrot aims for Kaido for some strange reason.
Well, not all speaking to Luffy, but at least speaking in relation to situations he got involved with, because despite panels like that, I still for some reason felt that Luffy never really got meaningfully involved in a way that helped her move beyond being held back, stuck, or trapped. In the event she was truthfully trapped on Zou, and was no exaggeration at all, then I suppose it would help for me to get a better sense of her entrapment back there and how Luffy could help free her from her situation beyond simply wanting an adventure.

"Join the crew" is pretty much the universal English translation that subs/manga scans use which is why I mentioned it, but the point I'm trying to get at is that in Japanese the word nakama is always used in a proposal whether someone is asking Luffy or Luffy is asking them. Whether it's worded as "become my nakama/can I be your nakama/let me be your nakama/we're already nakama (to Usopp in Syrup village)/etc". You can youtube "___ joins" for every character and hear the original Japanese dialogue. I'm not saying that'll never happen for Yamato. I'm just saying it's an interesting choice of words so far, more so compared to the cases where someone else is asking Luffy. God knows it's subject to change because this arc still has a lot of chapters left; I even brought up a possibility that it's being done intentionally so that a moment where Yamato finally asks "Can I be your nakama" instead of "Can I board your ship/go out to sea with you" has more impact. This scenario is just assuming they're the one to give the final proposal instead of Luffy, which would be in line with how proactive they've been on bringing up the subject so far.

My point is that I’m pretty sure “join the crew” or even “nakama” in the original Japanese wasn’t used for every single current crew member and that there aren’t only one or two exceptions. I could reread the chapters myself and post panels/name the chapters for which member it doesn’t apply but showing panels where the phrase isn’t used doesn’t actually prove anything. Instead when you claim that something happened for each member then it’s on you to provide evidence for your claim. YouTube is not a proper source, “do your own research” is not a reasonable rebuttal, voice lines aren’t canon when we’re talking about the manga.

The through line I was getting was simply not being content where they were. Some resigned themselves to it, some tried to change it. The subjects were all different, so I didn't see it as strictly about who they're saying it to.

Not to say that wanting to go on an adventure is a bad reason to set sail, but if people are going to try to convince me that her reasoning falls along the same lines, rhymes, and reasonings as Luffy's first nine recruits, then I might just respectfully disagree with them quite a bit on that. lol

About half the Straw Hats weren't any better before their mentors came along, including Luffy himself. That has always been the point: Pedro gave Carrot the propulsive kick forward she needed. We're just waiting to see the payoff:
