Although I had already watched all of the available Punk Hazard episodes on FUNi's website, I finally popped in the Season 10 Voyage 1 DVD just to see what's going on there.
As previously described, the "credits" are weird on the DVD also. The opening sequence credits are still shown in English, as had been past practice, but now only the credits typically seen during an opening sequence are displayed, with the addition of most of the Japanese voice cast for the episode (but not all). It's really weird, and just means that the vast majority of the opening song has no credits at all. This must be some weird thing Toei is forcing them to do, as it flies in the face of all past practices at FUNimation. What's worse, is that we literally get ZERO animation credits for each episode, not even the animation director, which we at least used to get in season 9. We may need to fight Toei on this one.
After the next episode preview of each episode, an additional "black-screen" credits sequence is tacked on for the English dub/FUNi credits. But the English cast list for each episode is very incomplete, and in some episodes, has characters from previous episodes that don't even appear. I believe Brownbeard is voiced by Bill Jenkins (the narrator), but I haven't figured out who voices Monet yet. I think one of the giant children is voiced by Leah Clark, using a slightly different Coby voice, which just reminds me that it's a shame they decided to change Coby's voice after Ennies Lobby.
We get one commentary track, and it's for episode 576. The participants include Colleen Clinkenbeard (Luffy), Luci Christian (Nami), Kara Edwards (Lily), and Francis Henry (Momonga). It was fairly interesting, and they talked about how they all got started in voice acting. The creditless opening is fairly worthless at this point, except just to see how the original Japanese logo was animated. I don't know if it's the same on other people's players, but when I watch the creditless opening, the DVD forces Japanese AND English subtitles onto the screen, and I can't turn them off. Kinda ruins the whole point of having a "clean" opening as an extra.
Interestingly, we also have one additional extra on this release, and it's one we've never had before on a TV release. It's a Japanese commercial for the release of Film Z, which of course was out in theaters around the time these episodes originally aired in Japan. It's subtitled into English so we can understand what they're saying. I'd venture a guess and say that the inclusion of this commercial was also a result of Toei's "control" of One Piece in North America these days.
While of course I'm happy the dub and home video releases are continuing, this sudden "control" and interference that Toei is exerting on our standard releases is quite worrisome. I'm hopeful that the cast commentaries will continue later in the season, as virus worries fade a bit.
