Next chapter : New Bounties or New Ship
Who bets -
I'm amazed at your inability to put yourself in the shoes of the characters and react as they are. The whole story is ink on paper, so it shouldn't make a difference if it were any human member of the crew, except that the purpose of reading a story like this is to escape into that world. If your can't get into that suspention of disbelief, then you can never really get out of the story what the author intended. Merry was a a friend who carried them, Merry became our friend too, so we're sad for Merry and for the crew who loved her.
No, Merry didn't "become my friend". I couldn't care less about a boat that spend the vast majority of 350 chapters + acting like a background element. What's next, "oh no Zoro's broken sword was alive all that time, it's talking to Zoro now, it's crying and suffering, =( ", there's limits to my ability to suspend disbelief.
I can relate to certain tragic things of the story because I experienced it somehow in real life like I said in my first post, but I never became friends with a piece of wood, or anything that wasn't breathing for that matter.

Well, I guess you'll never get that story element in One Piece then.
Not that you'll ever get it… But it's different than Zoro's swords that he purchased at Lougetown. Explaning it to you will be a waste of time because you don't see why we are sad of Merry's departure, nor do you want to see.
But just know that's it's not something inane, as you're most likely thinking. It may be in the real world, but, Aldrich, we're not dealing with the real world here.
Remember that.
-
I'm not saying it's something inane, I'm saying I don't get it. There was no value judgement in my posts.
-
So is it?
-
My bamboo is slowly dieing on me. I've named the bamboo "Brutus". I have had Brutus for years and it's not useful for me at all nor it kinda doesn't speak to me but it's the only plant I have and it makes me very sad to lose it. I will buy a new plant once it's gone but it won't be the same as Brutus.
-
why thank u twinklefairy :D

Next chapter : New Bounties or New Ship
Who betsno next chapter the crew sits luffy down and makes him tell the story of his grandpa or the will of the D
seems like every break in an arc something important story wise happens, cause we are still all guessing here on things like D and blackbeard, whitebeard ect..
-
Ghost ships in a Pirate manga, who would have thunked?!
Good chapter overall, thank you BF and thanks for the trans
-
love this chapter. <3
thanks for sharing =)

Next chapter : New Bounties or New Ship
Who betsI would assume New Ship before New Bounties. As New Bounties are usually made after the Strawhats leave an island, and I would assume that they'd need a ship to sail on. But I'm really hoping for Franky joining and building a new ship. But that's a different topic.
BTW. Why exactly were the Galley La heading to Enies Lobby?
-
Try listening to Forever Rachel from Final Fantasy VI well you read this chapter.
Things will just get sadder.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the following will happen.
Franky will team up and present a new ship.
They'll leave.
New Bounties for everyone (except Sanji… maybe)
There will be a Fun little arc (like DBF) that will ease the reader away from Enies Lobby.
Then another huge arc... with either Doflamingo, Jinbei, or an entirely new Shichbukai... or someone completly different. -
man…the last few pages of this chapter are just purely heartbreaking to read....
-
I'm amazed by the number of people who seem to think this is "the saddest chapter ever!!!" , I got teary eyed a few times reading One Piece (Chopper leaving Drum, Robin finding her mother only to lose her again a moment after) but this… It's a fucking crumbling boat that got torched. The fact it started to magically speak to its human fiends during the last couple of chapters isn't enough for me to feel anything else than relief. We can finally move on to bigger and better things.
I hereby submit this as evidence for my theory that Aldrich does not have a soul:getlost:

That was pretty funny actually. :D
But for me, the burning of the ship wasn't about a friend's death as such. The ship was for me the symbol of the happy-go-lucky journey that the strawhats had up until the Water 7 arc. Sure they faced some tough times, but nothing as serious as now. Merry's "death" is more like the death of some of the care-free attitude of the strawhats. They don't have that luxury anymore now that they are suddenly very high on the goverment hit-list and Usopp left them. It's sort of an reality check, things can't last for ever and some things can never be the same again.
The ship was sort of silly (a sheep head, orange grove) and impractical, and that didn't hold up in the long run. Same thing seems to be the case with Usopp and the remaining crew. They can't be "Going Merry" anymore like they used to. Atleast not to the same degree. I see this as a change to a bit darker One Piece.
-
The Aldrich posts are so funny..I have been disliking going merry from scratch, I thought the design where silly. But Oda played my emotions like a vilolin. Building up the end for like a 100 chapters or something and then just burst out in two very emotional chapters about heroism, sacrificing yourself to the limit and dying for your friends. It´s very romantic. I almost cried. It was a close call.
( Intresting post Urokråke.)
-
It may be more of a powerful scene than a tear jerker for some. Like when you watch all of Zoro vs. Mihawk or Zoro vs. Mr. 1 and then show a friend. If you're watching up to that point, as those powerful scenes draw near, your heart starts pumping as you think of the overall picture that's going to happen, and knowing that you're friend is going to be completely moved. All I know is that with barely reading the chapter, getting small details, and then seeing that panel with the GM in flames with everyone's shadowy figure, I could go on without reading the rest of the chapter, being filled with so much meaning just from that picture.
Otherwise, it's mainly the reactions of the characters which would bring about any form of sadness. I would tend to be like Zoro in a situation like this if I were there myself, filled with thought of how this is a *complete change of [their] lifestyle. So without reading through other character's take on the situation, I would just be left with my first paragraph.
*Well, at least a little bit =D

Re: Aldrich's "piece of wood" comment…
To the Strawhats, the Going Merry was their home. Filled with their memories. Kind of like an old family house that is handed down for generations. When you learn that you can no longer have that house, it's kind of devistating. This wasn't just a boat to the Strawhats. It was their home...in a sense, their sanctuary.

its not that way to everyone, some people can move on and proceed
-
aldrich is just in denial…. the fact that a piece of wood could be so important to the mugiwaras and the way that piece of wood bravely went to Enies Lobby and save it's crew....speaks volume of a character/piece of wood that far exceed the boundaries of crew and ship relationship........
-
the only thing I found funny was Merry talking or having thoughts, aside from that its a pretty strong chapter (compared to the previous one).
-
If there's one thing which didn't fire well… the way Merry falling apart is drawn just didn't seem right... as though when nobody was looking Mihawk snuck up and cut a clean line in it.
-

Oda didn't do anything special like that with Zoro's sword, though. He probably could have if he really had a reason for it. XD Although there is something different about a home then a weapon. Merry was never a background element to me, and starting from Skypiea I got the feeling of Merry being something a lot more special. You just didn't care to pick up on it. It's your right and choice as to what you personally find important in the story, but it doesn't take much thought to see that Oda clearly made Merry a living comrad in the story, and it's not that any boat was special, but Merry was…a miracle. It's your loss to not be able to see it the way Oda wants us to.
I can relate to certain tragic things of the story because I experienced it somehow in real life like I said in my first post, but I never became friends with a piece of wood, or anything that wasn't breathing for that matter.
I never became friends with a rubber pirate, a cyborg or a talking reindeer either. :P It's a fantasy story. I don't think I can relate to very much that happens in One Piece personally, except for the human element that exists in all the characters, whether human, animal, or even a ship. I don't think I could have watched Pixar's "Cars" otherwise.
But for me, the burning of the ship wasn't about a friend's death as such. The ship was for me the symbol of the happy-go-lucky journey that the strawhats had up until the Water 7 arc. That's a good point, actually, I like that. Although, it still remains to be seen just how different their lives will be after this.
-
forget franky, they need to go back to usopp's village and make Merry get them another ship. Going Merry-2

XD NOOOOOOO i don't want to see the gm again unless it was in flashbacks. I didn't like the gm once i saw the differents in power from that ship and other ships. Anyways i am happy to say good bye to the gm and i hope the next ship is nothing to do with the gm.
-
Gwaaah! Reading this whole topic last night made me cry a river! >.< Even after waking up this morning for school, I began crying again. Can't wait to read this far to read the dialog between GM and Luffy.
Now did the song 'Caravel Farewell' take place when Kaku pushed the ship into the ocean? If so, I'll place my bets on that song playing when the GM breaks in half.
-
Aldrich was being sarcastic, he told me he cried like a baby.
-
nice chapter Im so happy. now I want to see the next ship.
-
aw man, that's so sad, made me shed a few tears
-
When i scan through the raw it did nothing, I understand what's going on but it did nothing to me. Then I saw the panel where Iceberg looked surprised and the panel where all the galley la were cupping their hands to their ears and it got me curious so i try to read it in my meagre understanding of the japanese language, I didn't get it all, but I did get the part where merry stated that she wants to go to the mugiwara one last time, how an aqua laguna wave came just she's been repaired by iceberg to carry her out to sea, then when luffy apologizes but it was the last panel where merry said "shiwase datte" as she was burning. Damn that my eyes water.
Merry in this last chapter was elevated from just a prop to a thinking character. there were hints of it in the past but it was in this chapter it was fleshed out. The Klaubertemann is a legend, something people here about but never see with their own eyes. Merry last words were not only heard by the mugiwara but by all present, I'll not be surprised that there'll be a legend of a ship called Merry in W7 from now on.
-
So is Freaky Franky a part of the crew or what? Cause if he is I gotta start finding something appealing about him as a character, cause right now he's just really annoying: and ugly.
Oh yeah, going merry died. very touching.
talking ship, very funny.
win win
-
Hey, we still got a dead Nero.
Lucci just threw him out of the train. No-one ever said, "Nero's dead."
Same with Arlong and Bellamy.
And I wasn't all that serious when I wrote that. Anyway, Hililuk doesn't even count. Flashback characters die all the time and they're still considered characters. I was talking about characters that are in the actuall story.
-
NEXT VOLUME OF ENEL'S SPACE CONQUEST:
-
So Merry is finally gone, and not coming back, I am glad there is some resolution between Ussop and Merry.
So I think its pretty clear that Franky will join but… will Kokoro and Chimney join? I think a lot of the WG saw them with the Strawhats and have assoiciated them with the crew.
-
I was under the impression that the Marines thought they were hostages.
Except, you know, the one that got Mermaid Kicked! to the face.

XD I would love to see that happen, though it's completely impossible.
-
its about time the moons were adressed.. they explain how fucked up the ocean is at least though
-
Thanks BF…
Merry's dead. Robin, Zoro, and Sanji don't seem to be taking it so hard. Well, I guess I understand because Robin and Sanji don't have any prearranged attachment to it and Zoro is probably still pissed one of his swords broke...
I think Robin did shed a little tear on the last page. Sanji looked like he's crying too, but his hair covered his face. Anyway, it's not very nice for men to brawl.
I also notice a few weird things in this chapter.
-
I didn't know Nami was that attached to the ship. She's also the first person to notice the snow.
-
I didn't know man-beast Chopper is strong enough to carry Luffy.
-
-
Excellent chapter.
Some really powerfull scenes! -
Nami is the navigator of the ship, I am sure she is the 3rd closest to Going Merry…..
-
I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but I just recalled the anime version of the scene where Sogeking is telling Robin to trust Luffy and he has that vision of the Merry burning….coincidence, or does Toei get a heads up on this stuff ahead of time and they were putting some foreshadowing in? Because I remember thinking "WTF" about that scene at the time.
-
I think TOEI got first hand info from Oda about that…..yeah..... foreshadowing.... probably.......
-
Oda said in a SBS that he is always 3 chapters ahead of the week chapter
-
I read it yesterday and yes… it made me cry...
Merry will be always the best ship ever..where the crew shared their happy and sad moments. -
Damn you Oda-sensei…..
...making me cry when I already have a cold in the first place. First class chapter. Thanks to everybody who made it possible.
-
Aldrich was being sarcastic, he told me he cried like a baby.
Yeah I admit, I shed some tears…
Tears of laughter.
