He's here since Rave so what is the problem he appears again ?
No problem, I just thought it was from Bobobo.

all in all it was a by the numbers first chapter with way too much friendship talk..even for mashima's standards.
not a terrible read, just a really bland one.

This is still the best way to talk about friendship.

Nah, not Dengaku Man. I know someone on the forum had drillguy as their pfp, maybe that's where I saw it.
I think Mashima might just be the most generic by the books shonen mangaka of all time. I don't think he could have played it anymore safe than this.
I'd say it again, if it weren't because Mashima is a hack, I'd say that this is a parody, but the punchline never came…
Friendship! I mean: the whole "Let's be mean so he goes away, while we die a pathetic death" was dumb and forced. What will happen when he goes back to see them, and find them either inactive or completelly scrapped? Is a shonen protagonist so dumb that he wouldn't understand that his robot friends are going to shut donw and can't repair them with resources of the island/planet and need to go out to the "mainland" to find parts, no matter the number of friendship speeches or hours trying to fix them? Or did he know that they were acting and just obtuselly followed the script?
-It would mean those robots that were trying to kill him died so no/less remorse.
-They died like 20 minutes after he left. There really wasn't anytime for him to searching for spares and I suppose the idea is go get a life not live with robots until you die.
-They told him they are going to die soon in this chapter.

First chapter of the new series for anyone who wants to get into this whole thing again, for some reason.
Anyway, I think we can all agree that this does not need a new thread.
How many years can an artist be in the business and still not know how to use line weight.
I feel like it's a bad sign when in the first chapter you're already going to space. Going to space is the thing you do when you're running out of ideas.
In this case they are always in space.

Going to space might be but in this case they are starting in space.
What were those robots going to do if no human showed up?
Is Mashima incapable of making a non dumbass main character? If this guy had been repairing them for years shouldn't he know about their longevity?
I can get the appeal of sometimes having a character that's pure of heart or whatever. But it's his 3rd series. He should have just gone balls to the walls opposite of his usual ideas.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Rave & Fairy Tail sold millions of copies & are extremely popular. He clearly has a fanbase that enjoy his work & his writing.
So, sticking to what he is good at is the best idea.

I don't think his writting is the reason of the popularity.

Are you sure?:ninja:
Of course, there are the usual suspect: fanservice, hot characters, shipping etc
But the story is still the one that draw people in to read the series & stick with it to the end. If the audience has no investment in the story, they won't just stick around for the fanservice. They are better off watching hentai.
I did enjoy Rave. Watched a bit of Fairy Tail but wasn't into it.
His story is *simple enough to entertain his audience & sticking to what he know will work is a safe bet.

The thing of it that scares me is what He has progressed to. Rave was on par with a lot of shonen: Strong characters, Save the world, a little fan service thrown in occasionally. Fairy tail Started out in that manner, but by the end it was so much fan service that there was literally a character that could make people feel so much "pleasure" that they were incapacitated. It bordered on being hentai between that and the frequent female clothing destructions. In the first chapter of this manga he had the male character grope a female he just met, and that same female character had at least two crotch shots (mind you they were covered up) for little or no reason. It points to an escalation that is almost unsustainable without going full on hentai, and that is just sad and distracting. By the end of fairy tail, even his powerful female characters were being regularly stripped down and tortured. It is quite honestly disturbing.
But the story is still the one that draw people in to read the series & stick with it to the end. If the audience has no investment in the story, they won't just stick around for the fanservice. They are better off watching hentai.
Fanservice is a massive reason for why he still sells copies.
There maybe people who really do enjoy his works and are invested but most of his audience (talking purely based on the online community) do in fact seem to stay for the fanservice and nothing else.
Almost forgot about Larcade, lol. Best character ever.
This pilot wasn't anything special. Read it with open mind. Not bothered that much by all the similarities. He can do whatever the hell he wants. The premise is solid enough, and the setting might be really interesting, provided he actually takes an effort in world building. I'm a sucker for these touching Mashima moments, even if it's already been seen.
My biggest worry is Shiki's ability. I prefer when a character has a more specific ability which he then upgrades with time. Now we have a character who can pretty much use abilities of multiple mages from FT. Even if there are limitations, making it interesting is hard to pull off.
Btw, the action reminded me of early FT. When it was more physical and you could follow each movement. Mashima does that well, at least.

That's the problem though.
I really liked the Kingdom Hearts space thing and the space dragon, but knowing Mashima, it won't be anything more than a cheap gimmick with minimal development.
I'm fine with the MC. The Lucy and Happy clones not so much.
The "art" did bother me, but simply because Planet What's its name looked just like Magnolia (this actually bothered me more than the characters) and I feared that the setting would be exactly the same, but the Space twist will allow some creativity.
Ah fuck it, I'll stick around it for a while.
We don't even know what's it about. The pilot left more questions than answers and that left me intrigued..
Screw you, Mashima. I can't wait to bitch about this series weekly.

Yeah, Bleach, Naruto and FT ending really left a hole in my life. And OP isn't quite there yet.

Have you tried one punch man? Or if you need something with a more regular schedule, hero academia?

Seconded, both awesome series. The Promised Neverland too.

Im waiting for OPM to pile up a little. Plus not much to complain about.
MHA doesn't have too much to complain about, normally, either. I'm reading it regularly, but I don't comment that often for some reason. The fight scenes are all over the place, lately, though.
If it wasn't that clear, I meant the manga ending left a complaining hole in my life.

The answer is simple. Become a rabid fanboy of just one character that isn't Luffy and then complain like crazy when that character isn't given the treatment they deserves as the best in the series.
So, become a Sanji fanboy? :ninja:
Joking aside, none of the "fanboys" are much better when you really get down to it… I say be a chopper fanboy, you never have to worry about him catching a break, so you will always have something to complain about.

Being a Franky Fanboy is the way to go. He's super 24/7, even when not of screen so I'm always content with him.
As far as this first chapter goes, I have a hard time mustering up any kind of emotion towards it. At this point, anything that has Mashima's name on it gives me an idea to expect nothing. The whole friendship thing has been so overdone by him that I can't even poke fun at how much it was forced down out throats in the first chapter. So let's look forward to the mundane adventures of not Lucy and not Gray.
LMAO mashima watched Westworld that is clear. Other than that generic trash as expected.
Edit: Shiki has powers from Gravity Rush. xD
Funnily enough, Shiki from OP can hover in the air too.
Yeah, Bleach, Naruto and FT ending really left a hole in my life. And OP isn't quite there yet.
Golden Kamui would fill the three holes all at once, I swear!

I… I'm a Chopper fanboy...
Im kinda sad how a so talented mangaka is treating his own talent. FT started off well until Edolas or fuck even Tenrujima was pretty solid. This on the other hand made little to no sense as a first chapter. I got bored halfway
I did feel a little sorry for the mechanical people, but at least they're put to rest now.
It may not be wholly original, but that line about not wanting a heart if it means feeling such sadness got to me a little bit.
I also enjoy the concept of a modern day Tarzan.
Putting the groping aside, his inquisitive and awestruck nature is winning me over so far.
He should have kept the long hair though. Looks way cooler than being a Natsu clone lol
Although this chapter was nothing special as pilot chapters go,
I genuinely didn't see that outer space ending coming. That really catches my interest.
If we can possibly get a manga on par with Rave or early Fairy Tail set in SPACE of all places,
something interesting may come of this after all. I'm a sucker for space settings.
(If I eventually motivate myself to write a novel, it's gonna be a space drama)
So the mood right now is cautious optimism.
(but entirely prepared for things to spiral downhill)
I almost laughed out loud at Elcy Crimson.
Seems Mashima isn't taking himself or this manga that serious. Nor should we.
How can you even rip off yourself that hard? xD "Adventurer's" guild Meteor Torch aka Fairy Tail 2.0, Elcy Crimson aka Erza with Hades' clothes, Robo-Happy, essentially the same two protagonists… where does he even want to go with all this? I'm just waiting for Shiki's rival being an impudent Grey reskin and Shiki turning out to have a Robo-Dragon "dad" :D Definitely gonna keep reading this for the lulz
I have figured it out. I can't believe it took me this long. It's really sad when you think about missing something so obvious for so long.
Rave Master, Fairy Tail, and Eden's Zero all just plays put on by Mashima with actors just taking on whatever parts he wants. That explains why so many people look EXACTLY THE SAME. Who ever this actress who played Elie/Lucy/Rebecca is, is likely the one who was willing to be put in the most awkward situations, so she keeps getting the lead. Obviously Erza's actress no plays Elcy, and I am betting it's Irene's actress who is now "Big Blue".
You might notice that the main male actors don't get recast, that would just be silly. They would be too easy to recognize and do not have the "assets" to make it worth while to take the chance of someone noticing.
Rave Master, Fairy Tail, and Eden's Zero all just plays put on by Mashima with actors just taking on whatever parts he wants.
This is amazing and I fully believe it.
EDIT: Just read the chapter and… holy shit.
Two things I genuinely didn't expect:
Mashima: I'll do the exact same thing 75% of the time but the other 25% I'll do the opposite hahahahaha
I'm starting to suspect this story will eventually be connected to FT in some form. Mashima reusing concepts and characters isn't anything new, but I must say, the last was too just too much, lol.
I just imagined a crossover scenario with Fairy Tail (like the one with Rave) and it would be really akward, Mashima couldn´t avoid making the joke about how everyone looks the same and try to make it seems like something funny… I wouldn´t mind having Erza again if everyone else looked different though, it would be a one character thing like Jellal was, but at this pace next chapter we will se Makarov as the guild leader.
The happy part was way more gloomy than I would expect for this kind of manga.
I appreciate Girl being ablee to fend for herself and helping Gravity hand with the villain.
the cuborg cat and the whole part about it being a gun was…strange
also..hi erza.
So apparently the sequel picks up almost directly where the series ended, the main cast on a hundred year quest. Hiro himself isn't drawing it but he is doing the storyboards. Also it comes out on July 25th of this year. The anime is also picking up where it left off after Tartaros in the Fall Season
I'd like if he admited the whole "they are my actors" thing.
Wait… there's a Fairy Tail sequel AND this "new" series at the same time? Wow... it's easy to work hard like Mashima when you keep repeating everything over and over and over again.
Someone got a link?
