Since there's more time to kill until we finally get another chapter and we've all pretty much started gnawing at our own arms, can we talk about the fact that Perospero is SO ADAMANT about helping Big Mom catch the Strawhats, so that she can FIND OUT HE LIED AND MURDER THE SOUL OUT OF HIM that much faster?!
That's weird, right? Like, a lot of the hours in this chase should've been because Pero was leading Big Mom on a roundabout path to kill time until Pudding was ready, with Mama not realizing it because she's preoccupied on cake (heck, Oda could've ended that plot point with the same chapter we just got, with Mama getting frustrated and therefore using Zeus to finally catch up to the Strawhats).
But no: Not only has Perospero–the one most directly in danger if Mama discovers the Strawhats have no cake--taken the lead in helping Mama discover that the Strawhats have no cake, but he's been freaking RUTHLESS in accomplishing his mission.
Really, dude? Really?
Yeah. That was a pretty dumb moment. And I still haven't figured out what purpose the "confangry moment" served to the story or characters :-/
that's the issue though; her body refuses to accept anything other than the cake. Even if she ate a thousand gourmet meals right now her body will not stop decaying unless she gets the cake (and eats it too!)
I accept this explanation. Pleasure doing business with ya.
-
well technically SHs do have the cake since Sanji is bringing it…so Pero's life will be sparred. I can't wait to see Big Mom passing out with excitement after eating the cake, even more crazier than Bege. Plus, Bege only ate the icing. Sanji owning the BM pirates with his cooking. year of Sanji for sure! love it
-
I'm sure it has been discussed to death, but I'm reading the chapter today since I read through VIZ.
Top tier Brook gag in this chapter. Loved it so much. I honestly thought that Nami had really been shocked to the bone and that freaked me out even though I know it's One Piece and she'd be fine.
I also just love Nami and Brook in this arc.
-
Interestingly, VIZ translated Blade of Destruction as "Mama-Mash".

While it does seem like Peros was at least hoping Big Mom would forget about her ultimatum, him accompanying her makes sense. Leaving Mom to her own devices makes her more likely to take detours and destroy islands like Nuts Island, or possibly having her give up on the chase and go back and kill him. Perospero might be a bit of a cowardly liar but he cares about Totto Land, and specifically made the lie to keep her from destroying it. By staying with Big Mom he can ensure she focuses on the Straw Hats (though he hasn't always been successful) until Pudding's cake arrives.

Sorry, everyone, I'm a little behind on these. Hopefully I'll get the chance to catch up on the ones I missed…at some point, haha. At any rate, here's the comparisons for this chapter, since it just came out today in VIZ:
- All three versions use a different word to describe Big Mom's thinness: Mangastream uses "light", Jaimini's Box says "skinny", and VIZ says "nimble" (which actually has more of a different meaning than the other two).
- The part in MS where Big Mom calls Jimbei a "pipsqueak" when she's accusing him of calling her son a liar is an MS-ism. There isn't anything like that in either JB or VIZ.
- MS's translator's note for Cognac notes that the kanji for it reads "Emperor's Sword", while JB's TN explains that it's a variety of brandy named after a town of the same name in France. VIZ doesn't offer any translator's note for it at all. Furthermore, when Jimbei hardens his arms with Armament Haki, he calls this "Kairagi" in MS (with the translator's note explaining what that means), and "Shark Skin" in JB; the official version went closer to MS's, calling it Kairagi Glaze".
- Big Mom swinging Cognac at Jimbei is given a different name in each version: "Shatter Sword" in MS, "Blade of Destruction" in JB, and "Mama Mash" in VIZ, once again giving the official translation something more different from the scanlations than they are from each other.
- After Nami yells at Big Mom to stop [striking the ship], her reply is in MS is that if they want her to stop, "tell me where it is!"; JB has her answer "Why don't you teach me how to stop, then!" and JB has her say that if they want her to stop, "then you'd better 'fess up!"
- After Jimbei drenches Big Mom/Zeus/Prometheus/Napoleon with water, the sound effects Prometheus makes when reacting to it are different in each version: he says "hot!" twice in MS, "achoo!" twice in JB, and "ow!" three times in VIZ.
- After Zeus is forced to release his electricity onto Big Mom, MS says that he "got zapped", instead of the JB and VIZ versions that instead say he was "discharged". Also, when Brook is holding the unconscious Zeus, he notes in MS that "he says he doesn't have enough energy to go wild anymore", which doesn't really make sense because Zeus is still out of it here and isn't saying anything. Neither JB nor VIZ use this wording, with VIZ's version being "I don't suppose he has the feistiness to trouble us anymore."

I would think it should indicate her being more pissed off than we've ever seen her in her life. Maybe Oda didn't convey how much more threatening this ought to have made her (but it wouldn't be the first time Oda tossed out an idea like that which ended up going nowhere) but the buildup to an unprecedented meltdown was there, it just fizzled early.

Mama mash? sounds super lame

Random thought of the day: there was some good in having Big Mom on board. Thanks to her rampage, when Franky repares the Sunny in the near future he can make sure the new door is large enough to fit Jinbe.
Clever Oda…

Literally my first thought when I saw it being destroyed. Because even it was a lame way to try and dismiss Jinbe obviously joining, the ship definitely needed some renovations once he did lol

Mama mash? sounds super lame
While it is written with the kanjis for "blade of destruction", the actual name of the attack is Hahaba (haha = mother/mama). It is not supposed to sound cool.
I don't know if there is a pun in the name, but I suppose there is because Oda and that's probably where the "mash" part comes from.Anyways, since Linlin is giving me "mad mountain witch" vibes since she entered her current state, I really love the sound of "Hahaba". Maybe it's because I watched "Kirikou et la Sorcière" way too much, but its sounds like something witch-related.
-
Thanks for the explanation, access timeco! That does make it sound much better, I did not really understand it when I read the VIZ version. I felt the Kairagi Glaze term was awkward as well, I was expecting Stephen to use something more english, like JB's Shark Skin, easy to understand for common folk.

Well, Chrior, how would you convey what describes the glaze of a teapot, imperfect and irregular, yet beautiful thanks to those cracks in the glaze. Not only does the white in haki's black glaze brings such a resemblance to mind it raises the common folk's awareness. Leave a person a better person than the person they were when you met em; what's wrong with learning something new and relevant to another's life?

I didn't say it was bad, I just wasn't expecting it. I'm not a native english speaker and, after reading JB's translation, it felt awkward to see such a term being used, that's all. After searching for it, I can see where it comes from and how it fits, though.

Ples, leave Carmel where she ought to be… as poop used as manure to the first tree at the Seducing Woods.
Momma is just... like normal but weakened. Thin mode > hunger stampede mode, the priorities have changed to her body, and don't have a particular opinion about it... maybe i would decide for her once the greatest foe at WCI can't fight Luffy no more D;

Oooooh, fuck! I had totally forgot about that. Now I'm even more pleased with it.

Mama mash? sounds super lame
Excuse you. I want all of her attacks to be called Mama Mash from now on. Everyone in this series WISHES they'd have an attack named Mama Mash.
-
one more chapter with BM and I think it will switch back to Luffys fight…then switch back to BM before the fights climax as Sanji & co get closer to the SH ship. Just then everything is gonna happen all at once. Can't wait!
Loving WCI so far...from what started as a simple rescue missing (we knew it wouldn't be simple anyways) lot of development has happened in the OP world especially...lots of new people, new info uncovered.
Can't wait to re-read WCI arc again once it is finished.

Oh yeah, I'd completely forgotten about that. Back then, past me hoped that within a mere couple of chapters we would reach absolute mayhem with an utterly enraged Big Mom who wouldn't recognize friend from foe anymore and everyone - Charlotte children included - running for their lives and resorting to desperate cooperative measures. Meh, foolish past me. I can't say I dislike the current turn of events, but the chase is starting to drag. It's been what, 15-20 chapters maybe since that moment ?

Has it? With all the breaks and delays it feels exponentially longer.
-
It has been 18 chapters since Whole Cake Chateau collapsed and Big Mom went crazy for cake. But yeah, it feels much longer since it coincided with the holiday season breaks (plus the regular Oda breaks).
-
Hell yes. In real time that's practically half a year, no wonder the pursuit seems lengthy.
-
The pursuit is. lengthy
It makes it 30 chapters if you include the beginning of the ceremony
@Buggy:
Lmao that be hilarious and genius on Oda's part
This is very likely that it's gonna happen I think
-
I've complained about the pursuit as well, but I think it only truly dragged in the sea section. It's less, 'this all sucks' and more 'vol 88 is kind of a slow one, huh?' And it reads a lot better when you don't have to wait between chapters as well. Still a few pacing/momentum issues, but it's much easier to take. And since it leaps off from what has otherwise been a stellar storyline (the wedding is probably the best action set piece we've had since Marineford) I'm in a mood to be forgiving of one slow bit as Oda closes off his subplots and sets up the finale.
It makes it 30 chapters if you include the beginning of the ceremony
Okay, but why would you count the wedding along with the pursuit? May as well count all of Totland too.
-
It makes 890 chapters if you include the beginning of East Blue.
-
A lot of it hasn't been straight up chase either. You also have the battle on the coast, the cake preparations, the fight against Oven, the Sulong/Big Mom battle, and Luffy vs. Katakuri - that particular one taking up quite a bit of screentime. I think it'll flow pretty well once it's read all at once, hopefully.

This actually made me laugh out loud Haha!

Yuuuuuup…..
Gotta wait another 24 hours for the next chapter. Figures. I'm just moaning about it because I was off today and was so looking forward to waking up to a new Chapter and new Joy Boy episode to break it down for me. Oh well.
At least I read the Spoilers, but thats never the same. Glad to see it seems the arc is finally starting to conclude. I tell my coworkers who know about One Piece all about whats been going on and how itching I am to know more about what makes Big Mom tick.
I think once she finally gets the cake, she'll wind up with a massacre putting everyone in danger of being eaten, just like Big Mom. What do I think will stop it? Monster Chopper. I can just imagine Monster Chopper being the one to restrain Big Mom, and sedate her, and finally bringing out the one last Chapter I require of Big Mom's past. This is where Pudding's power can come into play too. Everyone will finally learn the truth, and Streusen will reveal an awful lot too (including when he, yes he, sired Perospero)

Surely Big Mom would swat Monster Point Chopper like an annoying fly. There's no chance in hell Monster Point Chopper can come even relatively close to matching the strength of a Yonkou

First of all, is there any actual point of reference that Monster Chopper wouldn't be able to handle a Yonkou for at least one minute?
Second of all, Big Mom is in a very weak state, and her mind will be in even less of a controlled state while she is eating the cake. A number of things could happen as she is enjoying her cake-eating bliss. At which point Chopper, in the form of Monster Point, will be able to resist Big Mom to do what he'll need to do.

Future Big Mom approaches Kaidou in his favorite local pub
"The scar that aches me the most is the one right here"
Points to hoofprint firmly and permanently imprinted on her left asscheek
Everyone starts bleeding profusely from their eyes"He never brought attention to himself; he hid behind the giant shadow called Strawhat Luffy. Do you understand what I'm saying? Please: You must recall Jack. He cannot defeat the monster called Chopper."
DONAlso, taking all bets: Sticking with the WhaleHats, or switching over to Luffy v. Katakuri next chapter?

I'd love it if Monster Chopper made a heavy physical contribution to keeping Big Mom at bay. I will say though that if she was at her full health, defensively Monster Chopper probably wouldn't be able to stand a chance. Our best point of reference is Luffy using Elephant Gun to knock out Monster Chopper at Punk Hazard. Big Mom used a generic Haki punch and clashed with Gear 4 with no trouble at all so chances are if Monster Chopper was struck by Big Mom he wouldn't be able to last long.
BUT Big Mom is starving and her body is rapidly eating itself away. Her attacks might have less physical power at the moment which could give Monster Chopper enough of a chance to get something done.

Which Sunny doors did BM damage? I've zoomed in on the Sunny on the panels after she ripped off the door, and only see in-tact doors
