And Disney now rules the world.
Marvel Movies Thread - Holy Shitballs

That arrangement kind of feels like something that has kind of a negative drawback to it.
-
I'm surprised it took this long. You'd figure Disney would've gone straight to the jugular after F4nt4stic 4 imploded.
-
Do it, Disney! Make all my dreams come true!
-
and also
-
I don't really like the idea of Disney owning pretty much EVERYTHING.
Regarding the Thor movie …
! Fun movie. Did not blow me away but i had a good time.
What i disliked most was how they handled the Warriors Three. Hogun was at least allowed to put up a fight … but to just kill two of them off just like that? It's not like they were the most developed and interesting characters, but after two movies, they deserved better. -
1- I really don't like disney owning that much movie properties.
2- I'm noot exited about disney getting the xmen considering it means molding them into the marvel factory movie machine where they all become a blend of the same. I rather a X-men that tries and sometimes fails and that a bunch of marvels movies that happens to have x-men on them.
at best split them. Have 20th century keep their xmen and marvel create their own version for their universe.
-
X-Men should stay in their own enclosed thing (them being in a larger super powered person universe just makes everyone look like a douche).
Drag Doom into a good movie for once, though.
-
Disney buying out Fox would also get the original Star Wars fully under their control, for what that's worth.
But yeah, X-men works better as a seperate world. The mutant prosecution thing only works when they're the only ones around and really falls apart side by side with superhero celebrities. A full on reboot wouldn't be a bad thing though, given that Jackman and Stewart are done and the franchise is still stuck in 1999, but… with the advent of Deadpool and the Cable spinoffs to follow who knows what'll be what.
-
The X-Men movies just also have a very different tone that's a bit refreshing compared to the MCU. Keeping them in a different universe or even keeping the studio divisions separate would help to keep the more mature tone that made Deadpool and Logan successes.
-
The X-Men I could honestly care less because… yeah, they work best when self-contained.
It would be nice for them to get the X-Men back tho only if that means they can take the strangle hold off the X-Men in all other areas. The Fantastic Four on the other hand, DEFINITELY should revert to Marvel. The FF and all related characters (ESPECIALLY Doom) deserve a better shot than they've got and this also gives Marvel a breadth of new options they can follow once Infinity War is behind them and they have to shape the MCU for Phase 4 and beyond.
As for Thor Ragnarok, I freaking LOVED it. This movie was goddamn amazing. I don't think it's my favorite Marvel movie, but it's up there... like top 5 easily.
It was just so fun. I was also surprised because the usual people complaining about "Too many Jokes" had me thinking there wouldn't be a single serious moment in this movie but...
! - Odin's Death
- The destruction of Mjolnir
- The Death of the Warriors Three
- Hogun's final stand.
- Valyrie's backstory
- Thor and Loki in the eleavator. (Tom Hiddleston deserves MAJOR props for non-verbal acting on this one)
- The final destruction of Asgard
- Thanos showing up to get the Space Stone from Loki
So yeah, not seeing the problem here.
It was very jokey overall tho and honestly I think this tone works best for Thor. They finally found a tone that works for this character… right before the Actor's contract is set to expire.... let's hope this entices Hemsworth to re-up. I'd love to see the same director tackle another Thor story.
Also, we're falling in line with the comics here too.
! No Lady Loki (Hell, no Sif at all) but Ragnarok happened, Surter destroyed Asguard, Asgard is going to be on earth now.
Makes me curious if we're gonna get Norman Osborne in the MCU soon and if he's going to be appointed head of the Avengers.
Secret Invasion -> Dark Reign -> Siege gonna be the new big arc for Phase 4 and beyond?
Also, one last thing:
! No Soul Stone?!?!? That means it's probably in Wakanda. My money now is on it coming down to Wakanda in the meteorite that brought the Vibranium. It's probably now buried in Wakanda, tangled under the roots of a tree. It's probably going to be what causes that tree to grow the Heart Shaped Fruit that sends whoever eats it on an internal soul quest and gives them enhanced strength/reflexes/etc if they master it. That's what gives Black Panther his powers and I'm willing to bet the Soul Stone is now going to be the cause of it…. that kinda sucks... that means 3 of the stones (Space, Time, Soul) were just already on Earth to begin with, and now Mind is on Earth too. So that's 4 of the 6 on Earth. Really?... That seems kinda improbable
-
-
Well, this is actually pretty good.
Wish there was more -
but… with the advent of Deadpool and the Cable spinoffs to follow who knows what'll be what.
Deadpool being the 4th wall-breaker that he is, he could easily squeeze himself into the MCU. And it would be glorious.
-
I'm glad I'm not the only one on the "keep X-men separate" train of thought. They really do only work as a separate entity, even if some of the character interactions with the larger MU are sacrificed. The concept of Mutants as a whole just is weird when combined with the rest of the Marvel characters.
There is no chance of them integrating Mutants into the MCU at this point in the game without it being extremely forced. Even if Inhumans was something really hammered into the MCU, at least they introduced them 3 years ago in Agents of SHIELD and took the time to explain why people were getting powers now. At this point in the game, them saying "Hey there is this tangible number of enhanced individuals with the same gene giving them powers and they're all being exclusively discriminated against" would be way too forced.
Plus if they do remain separate, Disney could use the X-men Universe as their experimental format. Given something like Deadpool being successful, and depending on the success of New Mutants, I could see them deciding to use these characters to do the stuff they won't risk with the greater MCU.

Am I the only one really really really hoping for a spider man, human torch and ice man team up movie????
-
Just saw Ragnarok and…boy was Blanchett and Goldblum yucking it up 110% for the entirety of the film. They were pretty much perfect casting in my book. I totally believe Jeff Goldblum is a crazy alien man.

Who preaches chaos theory

Yeah, saw a lot about Goldblum, but Blanchett was even better to me. Seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself.
Get the sense a lot of these one-shot actors in these movies are just doing it for a change of pace/giggle.

That seemed especially true for Blanchett- digging in to a nice hammy role just to have fun and get paid big. The MCU is so big that A-list appearances, particularly as one-off villains, are kind of commonplace now.
-
The actors all did seem like they were having fun in general.

Lol brings back old memories
I'd rather they use the human torch instead of fire star though, since spider man and him are best friends in the comic book world

I watched it Thor Ragnarok and… I liked it more than I thought I would have! I wouldn't exactly call it great, but it was a good simple adventure that really emphasized the grand powers and worlds of Thor for the first proper time in the series while having a decent balance between seriousness/drama and humor. It really felt like what I wanted out of a kooky and mild comic book adventure. And humor that is actually funny more often than not, although I was worried since it came off as somewhat too obnoxious and all over the place in the first act. I do have to somewhat agree with a lot of the reviews that a bunch of tense moments are undercut with some obligatory joke at the end for no reason and would have been effective if they played out as expected, but they weren't ruined.
Thor's character was cool in this. But what I really like the supporting characters were also fun and memorable, which I actually consider a feat since I find most other MCU movies to have forgettable supporting characters when they aren't big superhero co-stars. Valkyrie was awesome and fun and Korg was a complete surprise, but in a great way. Hela is certainly the run of the mill greedy and powerful MCU villain without substance. And yet... her style from how she walks to how she talks to how she attacks with some delightful CGI fighting choreography as well as how far Cate Blanchett goes with inserting nuanced moments of legitimate emotion that I wish were explored more make her sort of stand out as an MCU villain. If that makes sense. The Grandmaster was entertaining. And Loki was phenomenal in his interactions with Thor and Odin.
But I have to give the most praise to Hulk. I thought the movie did such a great job of surprisingly making him feel like a fully rounded character as a monster in control. He has just the PERFECT balance of intimidation, playfulness, childishness, and loneliness all complementing each other without one element being flanderized as his whole character. I'm seriously amazed since I am so used to the Hulk only being used for cool CGI action and gags where he beats up Avengers villains. I would have expected him to be a lot more bratty and out of control as a repetitive liability. And that scene where he transformed back into Banner was just... Wow. I want to see more moments like that. However:
! I feel like more weight should have been given to Banner's decision to permanently erase himself. He just sees people in trouble and accepts never going back without a fuss. It feels like a waste of internal conflict potential. As if the only reason Banner's erasure was even a plot element was to have an excuse for Banner to not make the escape and rebellions too easy after breaking out of the arena.
! And I take it that we are all just going to ignore how a Quinjet found its way to another planet, let alone to a portal in space. Okay lol. I can make that logical sacrifice for getting Hulk into this movie.
! Loki could have been a bit less of a punching bag despite most of those moments of being pummeled and disrespected being great. This is only a nitpick, but it does concern me a little how the main villain of the first Thor movie and Avengers 1 ends up becoming almost a complete joke compared to the rest of the fighters aside from taking out fodder on the bridge. All he really has going for him in terms of respect aside from family drama is accessing Valkyrie's memories and summoning Surtur. The only real critique I can give the movie besides some forced comedic moments subverting the end of serious impactful scenes is the first act feeling rushed and all over the place. But aside from that, it created a captivating contained adventure that has cool consequences. I want to see more of that outside The Avengers series and movies directed by the Russos.
All in all, cool movie. I give it, say, a 7.5 out of 10. Which is quite good, I don't operate on the thinking of anything under 7 in a movie/video game review being complete garbage lol.
Lastly, I freaking loved this remix:

If I had one complaint about Hela,
! its when she magically put on her thorn crown thing. It was cool that she could make it appear and disappear, and that worked… but then later on in the film she has the crown up, then takes it down, then puts it right back up within the same scene and and it just sort of overplays the effect. It was only done maybe three or four times in the film, but it felt awkward. "Oh, I have to take off my crazy headpiece so I can be taken seriously for this bit of talking. Okay, now back on!" It'd be like if Loki's horned helmet kept vanishing and coming back.
! I'd also hoped she'd be filling the role of Death in Infinity War but that seems unlikely at this point. -

Yeah, that popped up into my head particularly when Hela confronted Thor on the throne (by the way, Thor calling Hela's attention by knocking a spear on the ground while sitting like a boss was SICK) and just wondered why she removed her horns around her greatest threat, especially when she puts it back on a minute afterwards.
! I remember reading speculation about Hela being the representation of Death in the MCU. That could have actually been really cool. I will give her respect for not going out to a motivation power-up by Thor and needing Asgard to explode to be dealt with. Hopefully she's not dead. -
Deadpool 2 – Teaser Trailer #2 out of nowhere.
-
Really digging Negasonic Teenage Warhead's new hair.
-
^
Same here. She looks so much better now. New hairstyle suits her more. -
I just learned that Thor has All Mighty's voice in the Japanese dub.
Neat.

Okay, I have finally seen Thor Ragnarok.
I was really confused at first, seeing as though even if the trailer suggested a funny movie, they still dealt with the destruction of Asgard and hearing everybody say how the movie was basically a comedy didn't sit right with me. Thor's whole planet gets destroyed and ppl whiped out and they make nothing but jokes throughout the movie?
Then actually seeing what the context of the Ragnarok event is, left me really relieved after watching the movie and boy was it a blast. Almost all jokes worked for me, the characters were great, the action fantastic, and even Hela, while not being a fantastic villain, was still super entertaining to watch and Cate was just having tons of fun chewing the scenery.
And Tessa Thompson better be a major mcu character going forward, she was fucking fantastic as the Valkyrie.
Oh and keep Korg around too.^^
! It's sad how they quickly dispatched all of Thors crew from previous movies, but also really funny. And let's be honest, they did nothing relevant with those characters anyway. xD

Yes, because
! the actualy people of Asgard all got evacuated. And as Thor said, what matters are the people, not the place.^^
P.S. Marvel is very sneaky huh, releasing a somewhat misdirecting trailer to fool the audience a little.

! Alright, just curious. I was fine with it, but would have preferred not having jokes in that moment so the gravity of the situation could truly sink in.
Huh? What kind of bait and switch trailer? They were as straightforward as possible with this movie.

! Where Hela broke the hammer was different, trailer suggested Hela was the one who caused Ragnarok, but it was Thors idea and his eye missing was also hidden for obvious reasons. Okay I worded it incorrectly, it wasn't a total bait and switch, but they did misdirect us.

! They did a background green screen change, but… I wouldn't really call that misdirection. It seems like an unnecessary change because of some reshoots or something. They even shows the full Mjolnir destruction clip a week or two before the movie came out.
! And Hela causing Ragnarok was something feared throughout the movie until the end. The trailer didn't introduce anything we didn't already get to know from the movie. A bait and switch or misdirection would be, I don't know, Civil War trailers portraying Tony as an ally and Bucky as the villain but then we find out it's the opposite as soon as we watch the movie. You might be right about the missing eye, but I don't think they edited anything for that. The only clip they showed from the finale was when Thor got his power-up on the Bifrost, and both of his eyes were glowing during that from the lightning.
! Sorry if I seem like a jerk for being nitpicky about your wording. I just don't think Marvel did anything clever with the trailers besides hide endgame spoilers, which is what every average trailer does unless they recklessly show everything. -
Finally saw Ragnarok today with my parents. We had planned to go last week, but I got sick, so we decided to go today since we weren't doing anything big for Thanksgiving. And I enjoyed that way more than I thought I was going to, even after I heard it was good. It felt really wacky and fun while still having serious and emotional moments. All the major characters were enjoyable and memorable (except maybe Hela) and Korg is now my spirit animal. I just have one question:
! What was going on with that Dr. Strange scene? I haven't seen the full movie, just the general gist from several scenes and a friend's description, so I got what he did with Loki and the portal, but when he was talking to Thor, was he…teleporting him around the building, I guess? What was that, exactly?
! Also, I have to voice how much I loved that little "YES! THAT'S HOW IT FEELS!" Loki moment during the Thor vs. Hulk fight XD -

Strange was just teleporting to different places in the Sanctum Sanctorum like a douche. Although it happened more like Strange was trying to talk to Thor about Loki and Ragnarok, and had to go to different places to make examples and reference points. In one room, he's trying to read a book to find info. It's sort of like when you bring a friend into your house to explain something and you sort of just make them tag along into a tour of your house while you're trying to find things to help aid whatever the conversation/occasion is about.

All aboard the hype train!

Infinity War Trailer coming tomorrow

I think its incredibly stupid that we have teaser trailers… for the teasers. Just... why?
Do we really need to hype the TRAILERS up with a pre-game show a day ahead of time?
Gonna do my best to not watch the trailer anyway. I'm sold on the movie already, gonna see it regardless, so I don't need convincing and the spoilers that go with. SImilarly haven't watched any of the Star Wars trailers.
-
Crazy trailer .
-
-
Its like blizzard's announcement of announcements of announcements of content.
! what color was the index finger gem? I felt like it went from orange to yellow to purple, while the blue one was just blue.
-
Trailer spoiler, lol
! Shouldn't Thor know about the Guardians of the galaxy since he's traveling through worlds and all ? I mean, they are famous, aren't they ?
Also, can we start a poll asking which Avengers will die ?
-
I'm a fan of DC but… this does put a smile on my face.

yeah, the movies of the phase 3 are definitely better than the teen-movies they made before
