Chapter 883: Snack Time

@joekido:

Not really. Streussen doesn't create food from his body and he needed something to buffer his abilities so Sanji's cooking could be superior.
-
So what's the deal with the line of Katakuri about armament ? What is the correct one ?
-
Can mochi really become square and tougher in nature? Maybe after being cooked in any sort of way?
it can be molded or shaped to his wishes and a little bit of Armament Haki will do the trick
-
In Portuguese it's Merenda. Im thinking the way to beat Katakuri is to attack him while he's atacking you, but as a reaction move, you wait for him to engage you and mid yours conscious dodge you react with a counter attack. But the teories of him not being able to use the two colors at the same time, the fact that he has lost his cool and the sugar being a trigger to his power, are all very possible, as is a combination of them.
The thing with the intangibility it's quite tricky and i don't have a any strong feel of what causes it or how you control it, there are those here who alredy expressed there thoughts on the matter.
Truly Amazing chapter, all of it. -

I don’t recall any line about Katakuri’s mochi tasting good. Luffy was just willing to eat it.

Did anyone actually say that the mochi is tasty?

Streusen's food is edible, it just doesn't taste good. According to Luffy the mochi doesn't taste good either.
-
On the square mochi topic, I found after some reading that, for better preservation, current day mochi is sometimes sold in a hard dried form that can be of rectangular shape. Katakuri's square mochi could reference that and be hardened by concentrated haki the same way gear 4 alters the properties of Luffy's rubber.
-
So I guess coo does work with his intangibility. As in the reason luffy wasn-t hurting him even with haki is because he saw where luffy will hit and make a hole there. like what aokiji did in the war with WB or maybe what akainu did with marco and vista combo.

Oh, forgot about that

I do not recall when Luffy ate food that was created by Streusen powers (and commented about it), didn't only Big Mom do that? The power of the devilfruit makes things into food, Streusen can then cook it.
Also, in the Big Mom Flashback, we see Streusen chop a log into meat and ate that. -
I think that Katakuri can only use his advanced observation haki when the opponent initiates an attack. If he attacks first, he becomes unable to see what the opponent will do.
-
So Katakuri is trying to keep up the Brullee front as if he is perfect yet has stitches around his mouth from beatings and he eats like a pig and looks hideous. This dude is possibly insecure and trying to keep up a false image of himself.
I'm guessing Katakuri can only use one of the Haki abilities at a time. Hence why Luffy connected his attack?

We don't know what the stitches are for. They could be from abuse, from battle, or even self inflicted.
All w know is that they're there.
-
Btw,where did Brulee and her army go_
and why did katakuri lie that he never fell on his back, I don-t get that part.

Not sure Katakuri lied about that. He seemed annoyed at Brulee going on about it so it may just be rumors that sprouted around him with no regard to anything he himself felt about it

Yeah, I am assuming too. I state beatings specifically from fights, within the context of what Brulee has stated about Katakuri. Not losing a battle and being battle tested and all that other hype.
-
Man, I feel like everything is already said about the new Katakuri development. Someone in this thread mentioned the tears of the serious-Kata-fans. Well I'm one of them. But I'm also a fan of this Kata, couldn't stop laughing :D
-
did luffy get stronger or was katakuri just lacking in focus this chapter? is the big question. I love zoro fights b/c he has the most drastic growth during them, so i'm hoping same is happening to luffy. His CoO is growing.
-
I think the stitches were indirectly explained in this chapter, that he hideously opens his mouth so wide when eating that he ripped it at one point. That's why he flipped when the cooks said they wouldn't talk even if their mouths were ripped, because it's directly linked to his secret of eating that way.
-
Do I actually like Katakuri now? This chapter completely shattered my previous image of him and replaced it with something infinitely better.
-

Katakuri states that he lacked patience and didn't fully see to Luffy's defeat. This caused him to lose focus.
-
Chapter was really good
That katakuri reveal was spectacular and he still has his credibility
Luffy finally got a hit in and we have 4 theories at once, interesting which one oda will take
Katakuri is one of my favorite characters in this arc but im ready to see luffy kick ass -
After a day of almost nothing but tests at school, this is exactly what I needed. Thank you, Eiichiro Oda XD. On a similar note, I can totally can relate to Kata right now lol. I'm admittedly a tiny bit disappointed that ultra focused serious Katakuri is gone, but not nearly as much as I enjoyed the big reveal. Normally, I don't even like "you've seen my true form, so you all have to die" scenes, but that was fantastic in such a One Piecey way.
The one thing I didn't get about this chapter: On the page after Katakuri is seen lounging, Luffy is running toward him with a chief trembling behind him in one panel, and then on the bottom Katakuri is stabbing one of the fleeing chiefs. Did he just flash-step past Luffy without an on-panel indication, or am I misreading/not paying attention to something?
-
I see three plausible theories as to why Katakuri got hit:
a) He's not able to use more than one type of haki at once. It was hinted back before the timeskip by Rayleigh that most users focus on a single form of haki, rather than multiple. Initially I simply interpreted it as only being able to use one form of haki, but now that I think about it, it might actually relate to using the forms of haki together, which is what Rayleigh means by attaining great strength through mastering all three types. This is what I want to happen, but I think it's more likely that:
b) He can't use his powers properly while low on Sugar. It kinda makes sense, but then again, that would also apply to his armament haki.
c) He's extremely self-concious about people seeing his true face and therefore can't focus properly. This isn't what I personally want to see happen, as I think it's too predictable and lame, but I do think it's the most plausible.
-
I swear I've never laughed that hard in a long time. Previous chapter had Brulee boasting about her big brother greatness, only for us to find out that he's every bit as glutonous as his mother and not dignified at all. Even more hilarious when Luffy exposes him lying down and using his devil fruit ability to make his mouth larger so he can fit more food in.
Katakuri's own self-indulgence is one big fatal flaw that will lead to his eventual defeat.
But even more hilarious is seeing Luffy geting tired of EATING!
-
And so Big Mom joins The-Doffy-Club-of-Leaders-Who-Put-People-With-Weird-Character-Flaws-In-Important-Positions Club.
-
Mochi isn't really sweet. You have to roll it in some flavoured powder, cant remember what it was.
I can eat anything and like it, but maybe its an acquired taste and texture. You guys should try buy some.
Or you fill it.
-
The last page is very disappointing, we don't even get to know if KongGun made Katakuri move
-
Oh im describing Warabi Mochi. I had that recently. I gotta try the normal one again
-
The line about having to eat his way to victory is hands down the funniest line in this arc loool every time I remember his facial expression when he says that I crack up. Oh Luffy…you da bestest.
-
Big Mom actually did a very wise thing keeping her legs open for power and creating quality children. She built a whole empire with her blood. Look around you and see how many guys and girls open their legs for much less! Using her children marriages for territory gain is smart for an empress.
-
Good for Luffy getting experience points and leveling up. While some may wonder what weakness Luffy has discovered. I'm more concerned about the food Katakuri has abandoned. Will anyone eat the rest of it? I fear we will never find out. Also, i'm so accustomed to homies it's alittle strange to see someone eating regular food. Strange and disappointing. I'll miss them once the story moves on.
On that note, Katakuri's quirk is really tame taking into consideration the familly he belongs to. Reminds me of when it was revealed that Pudding is self conscious about her eye as a matter of fact. Anyway, he's too uptight, there's no shame in enjoying a good doughnut. He should have hot chocolate with the little marshmallows instead of tea though. If there's anything to be embarrassed about here it's that oversight. If this tea flaw is not rectified, I will have no choice but to declare him ruined 4ever.
-
Can you imagine how good those donuts are?! They have to be at least 10x better then our donuts!
-
I can imagine how good the doughnuts are, that's how I know having tea with them is tomfoolery! Hopefully Luffy will beat some sense into him so he can learn the error of his ways. Katakuri needs to go the the dark side of hot beverages and have hot chocolate with the little marshmallows. He's a pirate afterall what he drinks needs to reflect that, otherwise how are we the readers suppose to take him seriously?
-
I was definitely expecting Katakuri to have some weird looking mouth lol. I love the whole twist but I think it could've been delivered much better had we seen Katakuri taking one of his secluded snack breaks in a prior chapter. It would've given us time to suspect something was up and build suspense. You don't really get the payoff and satisfaction of having the rug pulled out from under you if you haven't had time to build expectations.
I think this is a general issue I've been having with this arc: it doesn't feel like Oda is giving his build ups the time they deserve. I felt similarly with the Pudding reveal.
-
@Count:
Congratulations, Katakuri. You are now finally a character.
lol Now he actually looks like a Big Mom Pirate. I love everything about this reveal.
Block Mochi looks cool too. I'm not even sure how exactly that makes sense as an attack, but I like how its drawn.
So… does Awakening transform the environment to have the properties of a certain thing instead of literally transforming it into a certain thing?
I want to agree with md-Martin about Katakuri's weakness being low blood sugar or something like that. But to me... It just looks like he is so self-conscious about his face that it's a weak point he has trouble defending against. Hence the emphasis on his putting his scarf back on after getting kicked. But I might easily be wrong.
By the way, does anybody know what type of food/object Katakuri formed with his Awakening on this page:
Google mirror moochi. Oda is brilliant.
-

Oh, I thought it was just about the Mirror World. That is a spectacular pun.

Maybe, but I don't really see any time where Katakuri would indicate his snack craving without breaking his stoic act. I like seeing a new side come out of nowhere, especially as it factors into his role more and more. Like, if it was a direct cause of Katakuri's downfall, that'd be a problem. But this twist is just the beginning.
The Pudding reveal had a pretty big clue in her failing to bring Sanji to the Straw Hats' route. A lot of people believed she was evil at first, but then Oda devoted so much time to making her seem nice that most of us were getting worked over pretty well until then he finally pulled out the rug.
-
@Count:

It makes me wonder how many steps he thinks ahead before he creates the characters and their abilities. And I can't help but laugh when the average joe calls the fights asspull. :getlost:
-
All Katakuri needs that this point is the right dream to cement himself as the most Mochi version of Luffy.
-
I'm not sure if anyone pointed this out but I'm pretty sure his weakness is simply his mouth. Looks like the king gun was aiming at that. May explain why he keeps it covered.
-
Katakuri is so gonna win next character tourney.

I should clarify regarding the Pudding comment, I don't mean that the build up wasn't there. With both that and Katakuri, there were clues. Many expected it. I mean to say that Oda played out the twist too quickly, as in it felt like the lead in was rushed. Like Oda laid clues and then did the big reveal before the anticipation truly had time to build. With Katakuri, the clues only really started a single chapter prior. I don't feel like it gives people time to suspect anything is even up.
-
My take on it: After he has eaten a meal, his powers don't work. Like when they say 'don't go swimming for 30 minutes after you've eaten!' Fits with the goofiness of it all.
To win, Luffy will have to feed him once more, in some way or another.
-
literally the dog tooth appeared…

I think the fact it happened in once chapter makes it all the more effective. Not everything needs to have build up, especially when it's something that isn't vital to the main plot.

Because I was already giggling when he started talking how he was 40 minutes late for his snack. Next thing I know, it gets more and more hilarious with each page, until I actually start laughing loudly when Katakuri is completely exposed in his shameful behavior. Adding Brulee's dialogue bits to remind us just how 180 he went just made it all the funnier.
I don't think the surprise would be that complete if it was hinted that he actually had sweet tooth or that he had scheduled snacks. Besides, it's not like anything was obstructed for us readers beforehand. The character wasn't touched upon so heavily until now. He'd just been partaking in skirmishes and following orders.
