In terms of mindless fun manga where I can't bother with the flaws my best ones were Toriko and Medaka Box. Even at his worst Toriko could still made me laugh about infidelity and MEdaka was just fun crazy. Great things to discuss with friends dangerous to analyze deeply.

I will never get over how hilarious it was to see the final villain brag about cheating on somebody. Of all the things to have your villain say in the final fight to look despicable, Shinabukuro picked such a random mundane scummy act. He was trying so laughably hard.
Carrot is really having a weird week. Not so long ago she was riding crocodile wondering what human civilization looks like and now that dude she probably barely knew before just gave her some great mission of protecting long-awaited saviors before blowing himself up. Life really is weird sometimes.

That's why it is so glorious. From a story-telling point it is mind boggling but by god you are sure to have a smile and even burst laughing on your face when discussing it with your friend.
If Oda skips the Luffy vs other guy who can use "gomu gomu"-sort of techniques we riot.
Why are people only talking about Pedro's death? Is Perospero dead? Is Big Mom dead?
haha damn, Uholicia looks much more badass than I ever thought.
I bet Boo is gonna smash that and join both armies anyway:ninja:
Also i found it kinda stupid that Chopper were not able to change forms. Was it because the candy was too hard? Why not go back into his small brain point form which would free him and then try going into monster or horn point to break the candy shell. Also how would candifying Brooke do anything ?He doesnt breath? and doesnt need to eat or drink considering he was drifting on a boat for 50 years.
Choppers entire fur and skin is glued to the candy (remember, candy is actually extremely sticky). If he would transform immediately into brain point, he would rip off his entire fur and skin at once.
Time for the Coup de Ex Machina to make another appearance!
Ok so…..this chapter was pretty great, but!
How the hell is Luffy not able to hit Katakuri despite using haki? (It's not like he just manually creates holes to avoid the attack, as you can clearly see the punches landing)
Also, how can Perospero use his abilities in water? Wouldn't the water dissolve the candy instantly?
The real meat of this chapter was towards the end, with Pedro's sacrifice. Unfortunately, I can't really feel sad or tense about it, because I've had bad experiences with people blowing up in explosions before in One Piece.
If Pedro turns out to magically be alive, I'm seriously going to consider just taking a break from this manga and come back once we're in Wano.
They are all alive, its us that are dead.

Yes, its actually connected to the Split universe.
Yes, its actually connected to the Split universe.
I see. I take that as a confirmation of Blackbeard's flashback revealing that he is Mr. Glass.
Now that Pekoms and Tamago are reunited, I hope they can have a moment of reflection when they find Pedro's body. I was wondering if it might spur Pekoms to defect, but nah, he's got no beef with Big Mom.
I'm starting to wonder if Carrot will join the crew to carry on Pedro's will. Not a fan of the possibility, but the angle of a crewmate's story being entirely in the present interests me, and always has a chance of being done well

Katakuri being a dwarf with Mochi body? Damnit, the more I think about it, the more I want it to happen.
Also, how can Perospero use his abilities in water? Wouldn't the water dissolve the candy instantly?
I'm even more puzzled how he teleported from Ship to Coast in the first place. But I guess he created so much candy, that it just takes some time to disintegrate.
@Kaido:

Well, even if she was just an honorable Straw Hat (but still nakama for life), Vivi's "tragic backstory" is basically the Baroque Works Saga
Why are people only talking about Pedro's death? Is Perospero dead? Is Big Mom dead?
Aww, come on. The poor mink is trying sooo hard with his bombs, let him have successfully killed at least one person :ninja:
Re: Luffy not hitting Katakuri despite haki, I would gladly go with he really is a dwarf. Picture a Tontata body (with oversized head) hidden underneath that scarf and all the rest is just a mochi exoskeleton. Fake bodies are all the rage lately… Plus the badass body would be overcompensating for his midget-ness, good twist :happy:
Akainu was also hit by haki-imbued attacks in Marineford and nothing happened to him, he just closed his "wounds" in a sec while complaining vaguely about "haki users". Nothing new to see here, although the Dwarf in a Mochi body would be funny as hell. Also have to agree with Ramistar's rant here. Coming to chapter threads lately is just depressing to see. Nitpicking and overreacting at their finest most of the time. It's not about turning one's brain off and mindlessly enjoying the chapters vs. carefully and rationally analyzing the intricacies of storytelling. It's perfectly fine to analyze and scrutinize what's going on in the series, that's what the forum is for. And it's mostly a great great forum out there. In the threads where the series' different aspects are discussed as a whole, coherently. Chapter discussions have consisted almost exclusively of bashing on the most trivial things and have become just unpleasant to read and participate in. I didn't even really like last week's chapter and I still felt like Ramistar does this week. I said almost the same thing in the previous chapter discussion, even. The prime example of this phenomenon is the amount of hate for Fujitora during Dressrosa. Until in the end, it is revealed why he acted like that and everything made sense. Months upon months spent complaining about something which was eventually explained. Some people are just so quick to jump to conclusions regarding some parts of the story. Just like many are complaining about Sanji baking a friggin cake as the worst thing ever, without even giving it a chance to happen. Some chill is needed once in a while. After a shitty day at work, I can only thank Oda for providing me with this fine piece of a chapter. Honestly, I couldn't care less about Pedro being alive or dead, or being properly developed or what. When I read that scene, I wasn't going "oh no, I like this character so much, I don't want to see him die", I was " damn, man, that took insane guts, respect for this guy". It was a badass, important sacrifice he made and it connected with me because the chapter was just really well done. The pacing and panelling were so well done that I was immediately pulled into the action and was feeling the sense of threat, urgency and impending doom that the characters were feeling. I didn't need uncertainty regarding Chopper or Pedro's survival to feel these things. This is how One Piece is and this is how a good action chapter of OP works.
@The:
Hold up a sec, since Jinbei is already on the deck of the Sunny, is he an official member or does the door still count as an obstacle? :ninja:
Also, I like how he went "Oooh." to Luffy's Red Hawk almost like he's never seen it. Probably because the first time he used it was against Hody in the middle in ocea… oooooooh.
Seeing Jimbei go "woah" is pretty nice and just keeps people quiet about him being too powerful. I know it doesn't seem like much but even as far back as Fishman Island, his reaction to Luffy's CoC compared to the reaction of Zoro and Sanji says a lot.
Luffy ignoring Jimbei's counsel for once also shows a degree of separation between the two. Jimbei was never a Mihawk or even a newbie War Lord like Law. His capabilities aren't over kill, there is room for growth. Despite that I expect to see something absolutely amazing coming from Jimbei within the next few chapters now that the crew is in the ocean being pursued by tons of battle ships!
I believe Enel initially calling Gattling hit-location could apply here, similar to "Aokiji stabbed by Whitebeard with Haki!"
Observation + ability to turn parts of your body into the stuff you create.
Because, if I recall correctly, Luffy´s Hawk attacks are G2+Armament.
Goes to show Armament doesn´t mean auto-win against these strong oponents.
I get what you're saying it's just with Katakuri there is no doubt he is actually taking hits, his Mochi is clearly getting splatted Luffy. Where as Aokiji quickly opened a whole in his body before he was touched. Of course Katakuri could be pulling an Akainu and just dealing with the hits in a way that only a top tier of the world could.
Big rant incoming sorry in advance.
! I think this chapter was amazing. I even cried at the end. Well it's probably due to the super emotional soundtrack I was coincidentally listening while reading the chapter. Still for me One Piece is that funny/crazy super elaborated yet kind of childish universe where everything happens for my own entertaining.
I have so much fun talking about it with my friends irl. We naturally say what we found funny, epic, cute and so on. And we love creating crazy theories.
! To go online and continue this experience, only to find an army of disappointed fans that came just to say what they disliked is getting boring. This sophisticated yet simple shonen is over analyzed rather than casually enjoyed. And the only time the entire forum lets their inner child wake up are the chapters that show us what's happening in the rest of the world between two arcs.
Recently some people have been saying that the strawhats need to get severely injured to show how dangerous Big Mom is. Those guys are so much into analyzing rather than enjoying that they stopped rooting for Luffy and want him to get injured. WTF ?
! I will keep browsing question, theories, predictions and nakama threads cause they do bring the fun I am expecting from a fan community.
But I am done with the chapter thread.
! PS: to be completely honest with you my brain is still struggling to understand why so many people give in to reading spoilers for a story that teaches you to find out things by yourself
Agreed. Of course people can love and hate what ever they want to but all the complaining does bring the fun down sometimes. Some people don't want to enjoy stories, they just want to defeat them, that way they know all their training and schooling in writing is in the right and justified. That is no jab at the 3 prominent people on this board I know who have had real schooling or jobs when it comes to writing. Thats a jab at those who I've never seen post one positive thing about One Piece.
Oda used to be like that didn't he? I recall him admitting that he was very critical about certain stories and thought of his as much better. This was before One Piece I believe. Then once he found his own success he probably kept his true thoughts to himself, lol.
Of course if all anyone did was jump up and down about how cool every chapter was, it would get really boring around here and I probably couldn't take most of the praise seriously. I usually don't have much negative to say and i've noticed I've been apart of the defense force for a number of topics, so maybe a bunch folks can't stand the way I post.
Though spoilers are fun to me! In part because I like discussing the bits and pieces before hand and also I love watching people over react and then half the time eating their words in a day or two. Makes me wonder how they deal with negatives in real life, lol.
I know the general vibe from this chapter is much more positive than last weeks but I may have to put a stop to it as I've noticed something. The explosion looks to have caused Big Mom to flinch and may have actually(I'm sorry) knocked her over! gasp Team Hate Hate may commence with the hating.
Oh and speaking of the explosion, it may not have killed Perospero but it did free the Sunny from the candy. So at least we don't have to wait until next chapter to see if the boat is free. Now we just wait and see how Chopper and Brook gets out of their jam.
I loved this chapter!

That's more bashing stuff for no good reason though, which is always dumb and should be called out. Ramistar worded it more like overanalyzing chapters in and of itself is bad, which is a bit confusing. Especially when I'm used to seeing a lot of people (not here, but elsewhere) respond to thoughtful criticism by saying things like "Why think about this and that so hard? Just enjoy it." It's fine for people to enjoy things other people don't, but statements that sound so broad can be condescending unless elaborated upon. People bash criticism as a whole so much that it can be confusing to tell if they mean something more specific than that. So I apologize for misunderstanding that it was only talking about bad criticism like Chopper and Brook losing. It's obvious that they should lose, and the Straw Hats always make up for poor performances later on.
And stuff like Sanji baking a cake and Fujitora had so many obvious hints and already had justification in the moment. It's not like they did those things without uttering a word and then you only hear the whole explanation at the end of the arc, which would be lazy writing.
Of course if all anyone did was jump up and down about how cool every chapter was, it would get really boring around here and I probably couldn't take most of the praise seriously. Nah, of course not. You're good, my man.

Pedro leaves me cold. His absolute dedication to Luffy and co seems cheap since there is no real explanation for it.
The relationship between Carrot and Pedro should also have been more developed to achieve an impact.
Yeah, I see what you mean, as we don't know much about Pedro's and Carrot's bond with each other. Maybe next chapter, we might get a short flashback explaining some things, like their bond, and more specifically about Pedro, as he is a bit of a mystery. So, I guess, we have to wait and see.
What was with the cover page? I kinda struggled to understand what was going on.
From what I recall, this lady is supposed to be Sai's previous fiancée, so there will be a conflict between her and Baby 5, and I'm curious to see how it will all go down in the next chapter.
Choppers entire fur and skin is glued to the candy (remember, candy is actually extremely sticky). If he would transform immediately into brain point, he would rip off his entire fur and skin at once.
Yeah….. that sounds like a super gruesome scene in my mind XD
As for my thoughts about the chapter, it was nice to see some action, after that chase with Big Mom. As for Pedro's sacrifice, well, even though he is still alive, he still helped with getting rid of Perospero, which in return saved Brook's and Chopper's lives, as they won't be stuck in the candy. Same with the ship being freed from the same substance. So, at least the Strawhats now have some form of escape. The only obstacle now is getting rid of Katakuri, and using the Coup de Burst to go where Sanji and the others are.
If Oda skips the Luffy vs other guy who can use "gomu gomu"-sort of techniques we riot.
I wanted this to happen with Bellamy in Dressrosa. So I'm all for it.
Blackbeard = Mr. Glass
Luffy = David Dunn
Pudding = The Beast Kevin Crumb
No wonder Luffy's weakness is that he can't swim. Everything is falling perfectly into place.
with each of the straw hat pirate alliance getting 5 page cover stories each (or so it seems) do you guys think Bellamy will get his own cover story?
with each of the straw hat pirate alliance getting 5 page cover stories each (or so it seems) do you guys think Bellamy will get his own cover story?
I don't know. I would love it if Bellamy got a cover story, but as you likely know, he is not a part of the Grand Fleet. And the Grand Fleet is literally in the title of the cover story.

Yo, I can imagine him chucking water geysers the size of Kamehamehas, that would be pretty sweet considering how water is literally an extension of himself and his abilities.
@The:

I never realized how Jimbei's geysers look like Kamehamehas. That is glorious.
If Kata is actually a dwarf in a mochi body then I won't even care that this was done before because dwarf Katakuri would be glorious
@uniaka:
Some while ago oda mentioned superior class dfs. baby5> mr 1, aokiji> monet, machvise> miss 5 whatever her name was. So could katakuri's fruit he the superior class of luffy's fruit? since he is like a logia luffy, and was said his fruit is special paramecia.
Mochi is an elastic food, not actual rubber. Therefore it cannot be a superior version of rubner.
Fire, magma. Kilo, Ton. Snow, Ice. Not a food and rubber

he's kind of like an unofficial member though….... I mean he did take part of a vire card
but I guess we'll just have to see
another question do you guys think the grand fleet will help against Kaido? I think it makes sense, I mean if you were going to go up against a Yonko, you'd want a fucking army that's loyal to you at your back so logically it doesn't make sense for the straw hats not to call them but....... there's just waaaaaaaay to many characters in this war already, the minks, super novas and there crews, marco, which means weevile will probably be there, the entire samurai alliance which has who knows how many people in it, possibly gecko moria plus each straw hat crew member will probably get there own individual fight and possibly the last crew member getting there time to shine
@Kaido:

Ain't a Ultramarine more like a Kamehameha?
You know it's interesting that if pedro didnt try and kill himself and perospero
Chopper and brook moght be dead
They were turning into candy from the inside out not sure how to combat that with punching

Pero is the oldest that might attribute to some of his high bounty. And also I assume his ability has a weakness to fire since candy melts.
Yep, we already saw it before when Sanji easily broke the Vinsmoke free from the candy just by touching it with Diable Jambe.
Pedo's bounty is 700 mill yet he licks loli's and get's his defenses broken by a restricted Luffy.

Because you're one of those people that will relate bounty to power level, despite it clearly not being so.

Melted to easily tho.

Wrong. Pedo told Petco he is out of his skull for attacking him with such a bounty.
sai has a fiance and still take baby 5 home with him? men are pigs!
im ok with pedro's sacrifice regardless he survive or not.
i dont like how perospero brag about his bounty. a yonkou crew shouldnt brag or care about something like that. even jack told his men to shut up about his bounty.

I agree. It's like some people expect others to simply praise it even if they don't truly feel that way. If they did, it would just be fake praise and I'd rather know the truth rather then people praising it to appease others.

This was an interesting chapter. I do like how they are obviously hinting at Luffy's powers being similar to Mochi, setting up foreshadowing for what Luffy may be able to do in the future when awakened? I am interested to know how Big Mom fared. I really just want to see the aftermath of them getting away, and Sanji baking the cake and the results of that. I have nothing else to say at the moment. RIP Pedro.

Makes sense coming from Big Mom Crew. They either are spoiled, arrogant, or have big egos and don't know their own strength.
@uniaka:
SBS 79, sandman translated it on this page: http://forums.arlongpark.net/showthread.php?t=42975&page=6
He used ''higher rank df'' instead of superior.
Late reply, my bad was playing Dungeons and Dragons, but thanks! So he ranks certain fruits as superior to others. Hmmm. And Carrot called Katakuri's fruit "just like Luffy's". I feel like their fight HAS to conclude then, and can't just be a skirmish, due to Luffy needing to prove that he can be stronger than his superior fruit version (from a story view, not Luffy's own mindset). It's another underdog situation for Luffy, too, and Oda loves to create those situations.
I see some people saying they think Carrot might be the next Straw Hat. Maybe they might get a little bit more evidence that she might, but do remember Oda did say that one new crew member would be a previous enemy. So I don't think Carrot would fit that, and Jinbei doesn't either, he's a lock. I do want a female on board but I am not for Carrot. I'd prefer someone like Hancock. She seems tough.
Wrong. Pedo told Petco he is out of his skull for attacking him with such a bounty.
So your point is that you're measuring strength on the same measurement as the cocky idiot proving that bounties don't mean shit?
carrot is ok for me. i want the next female member to be different than robin and nami.
carrot is a mink so of course she's different. but she still has the 'sexy' body type. i prefer someone with more different posture. someone like lola or chiffon for example.
i also want the new member to be physically strong so its different from nami and robin who use techniques as oppose to raw strength. carrot is pretty strong and most of her attack are melee so that's good.
last but not least, i want the new member to be silly in nature. robin is more on the serious side even though she can be pretty funny some times. nami is half and half. carrot is more on the silly side so that's another point for her.
didnt it say somewhere that there will be 2 new member join at the same time? its pretty likely that it'll be jinbe and carrot. especially after this chapter in which carrot inherit pedro's will, sort of.

Blockade went up in smoke? What are you talking about? It's still there. Perospero's defeat means that the Sunny is freed from his candy, but he's the only opponent down for the count (presumably). Big Mom is still up and about, and so is Katakuri, and the battleships, and there's still the matter of the mirror in Nami's room.
Every Devil Fruit power has a weakness. By your logic Katakuri doesn't deserve his over a billion bounty because his mochi is weak against water. And you seem to only remember the candy melting, rather than when Peros not only subdued Chopper and Brook, but Pedro too, and basically was the biggest reason for the Straw Hats' impending doom which is why Pedro had to take him out. People can "lick lolis" and still be legitimately dangerous, that's a pretty common character trope especially in One Piece.

Why are you even responding to someone calling big mom either big meme or big fail. Such lame trolling attempts don't even deserve acknowledgment.
sai has a fiance and still take baby 5 home with him? men are pigs!
If I remember right from Dressrosa's multiple storylines, not wanting to make that arranged marriage was the reason Sai fought Don Chinjao in the first place. So she might not be his fiancee in the lovey-dovey sense
did anyone notice her?
