Chapter 873: Trapped like Sweets in a Cage

@Count:
MJM is only predicting that.
Yeah sort of, but there's also a Kyoto Wano event happening in late October. Roger covered this. Makes sense, but kinda hoping the Reverie is more than just a couple of chapters. Hope this isn't true, but if the Wano event is in line with the manga release, we may just end up in Wano then. Should've been less definite with my wording, slated was the wrong word.

@Monkey:
The American Jump audience probably has no clue who they are, I mean I don't know who two of them are, and only in passing do I recognize A Person From Saint Seiya.
Nor have they been in the American Jump to begin with.
It would be weird to have them. Can't editor explain it is the 50th anniversary of Japanese Jump ? Because I understand there will be other covers in the next issues, so skipping most of the serie just because they are not known sounds weird.
-
It being popular here(I'm also Portuguese) and in the rest of Europe doesn't mean its popular in the US, I doubt Tsubasa was popular there and I rarely see Americans talk about old school Saint Seiya as something they watched as a kid, so yeah we can't just think something is popular somewhere because it is where we come from.
Yeah, I know, I was just thinking along the lines of "if a foreign show is adapted for this small country in a corner of Europe, it must have been popular in Western Europe/USA before". I guess that we also had much more French cultural influence rather than American back in the 80s/90s. I remember seeing Dragon Ball with stuff like episode titles written in french back then. But yeah, seems pretty obvious that Captain Tsubasa (or Oliver & Benji in PT ) was never a hit in the USA. I feel embarrassed now. v.v

that's Oda incredible forward thinking again

Okay, well, this was my first time reading the MS version, too, since it released so late. Got a lot today!
- On the original cover of the magazine, several characters from other SJ series were also holding the pirate hat symbol thing. On the VIZ cover version (which frequently simplifies them), only Luffy is shown.
- The punny name of the chapter is different for each version. Mangastream calls it "In a Sweet Bind", Jaimini's Box is "Trapped Like Sweets in a Cage", and VIZ's is "Recipe for Disaster".
- Count Niwatori's words about Bege differ a little bit in each version as well: In MS, he states "And here I was, believing in your strength like an idiot!"; JB has "And I even thought highly about your ability-noir!", and VIZ says "To think that I actually put le trust in you!"
- Both of the scanlations suggest that, if anyone on the roof were responsible for the explosion, they'd be suicidal. However, the official version actually says "If they did that, it was suicidal. They were up on the roof with us!", implying that he was talking about a specific group of people.
- The two scanlations, when talking about Jimbei's actions and the Sun Pirates fleeing, seemed to be saying two very different things. (MS says that Jimbei took back his request to leave long enough for them to escape, while JB says that Jimbei requested to leave in front of Big Mom on purpose to that her flying into a rage would signal them to leave.) The official version is closer to the MS version, but the MS version's first sentence is a little weird:
MS Version: "Mama's state of mind was clear. Jinbe told them what was going on, and temporarily postponed his defection to allow his friends to escape."
JB Version: "It's clear that Jinbe withdrew from the crew in front of Mama, so that she would fly into a fiery rage, signaling to his crew for them to run."
VIZ Version: "He knew that Mama's rage would spread, so he took back his request to leave temporarily, in order to give his comrades time to escape."- The scanlations just have the townspeople commenting about Big Mom's eating disorder, "I can't believe she's having another attack so soon!" or similar, but in the official version, they explicitly say that this short interval between them doesn't not happen: "She's never had her fits on such a short interval like this!"
- MS has Perospero say that they "saved some extra cake", more vague than JB and VIZ specifically stating that "There was a backup cake".
- Also, after Big Mom leaves and Perospero notes that he's dead when Big Mom comes back, Smoothie for some reason says "I've bought time". The line is supposed to be referring to Perospero's stunt, and is more correct in the other versions: "But we managed to earn some time."/"But that did buy us some time." Also, where the scanlations had Perospero saying that he'll be dead once Big Mom comes back, it's left ambiguous who's saying those speech bubbles between Smoothie and Perospero, and is commenting that they'll all be done for when she comes back.
- The special ingredients that the BMP stole from other countries are given a different name in each version: "illusion" ingredients in MS, "mythical" ingredients in JB, and "legendary" ingredients in VIZ.
- The speech bubble after Perospero comments that Big Mom didn't get to eat the cake is implied to also be spoken by him in MS ("Which means, our order this time around,"), but in JB and VIZ, it's implied to be Smoothie replying ("…Then, this time's "sweet theme" is?!"/"Then…what will her order be?!").
- Pudding's comment about the wedding cake being chocolate chiffon was different in each version, too. In MS, she says "The wedding cake itself was a chocolate chiffon cake" (as in, the one that got destroyed); JB says "The wedding cake this time will be a chocolate chiffon cake" (as in, the new one they're going to make); VIZ goes with "This wedding cake was supposed to be a chocolate chiffon cake" (presumably, also the destroyed one?)
- Pudding also says about Chiffon in the MS version, "Oh, I'll tell her a thing or two" rather than the lines about making Chiffon listen to her in the JB and VIZ versions. Furthermore, she also states in MS that Sanji "insulted" her, rather than "disgraced/humiliated" her in JB and VIZ respectively.
- Like in previous chapters, the "-jyuu" that Kingbaum put at the end of his sentences that was kept in the scanlations is changed to tree puns in the official the first time, he says his wounds are "acornizing" (agonizing), and the second time he calls the Straw Hat group a "thorn in [his] side". Also, Lady Tree calls him "Kin-chan" in the original, and this is changed to "Kingy" in the official translation.
-

I think most people read JB instead since MS didnt come out until the afternoon, thank you for the Viz Lines though

With JB's existence, the only reason to read MS scanlations is to question their translation choices and laugh at the out of place swearing.

what was the chapter again, where an editor mentioned that half of WCI was over?

The news was revealed December 5, 2016, and Chapter 848 came out on that date in Japan.
Just like people said at the time, it was never about the chapter number, but rather the arc's overall story progress. If it was about the chapter number, the arc would've ended this chapter, or sometime in the next chapter.

Or you know, once again the estimation was significantly wrong once again
-
This chapter marks the end of the WCI arc, stay tuned for the upcoming Totland but not longer on WCI arc!!!!
-
The arc hit a big turning point pretty shortly after 848, so yeah I can see what they meant by halfway

Makes a lot of sense.

First off, thanks Screwtape, Kaido king of beasts, and watch-man for your replies. I have a busy life working a full-time job among other things, so I apologize I didn't reply sooner.
Screwtape- I dont' know what devil you refer to. Feel free to clarify lol
Kaido-fair enough. Perhaps this simply isn't the type of arc I thought it would be. Dressrosa was such a battle heavy arc, I thought that once they reached Big-Mom this one would be too. I suppose that was naive of me, considering how much of a power gap there is between the Strawhats and the Big Mom pirates. Oh well, I'll try to enjoy the ride while keeping that mindset in mind. With what you said in mind, it's an alright arc just tainted for me because I expected it to be something different than it was.
Watch-man, perhaps that's also an option and we will have some bigger one on one fights soon. If it doesn't happen this arc, I guess like has been said- perhaps we can wait for that in Wano.
–------
All that out of the way, my thoughts on the current chapter now that my replies for the last one are done lol.
I like seeing the Big Mom pirates operate so well together so far this chapter, and how quickly they are trying to appease Big Mom and her hunger rage. Wait Pudding is a chef?! Oh wow, now I kind of want her to end up with Sanji for real lol. A little awkward how much she looks like Nami in that first pannel of her though..who in turn is more awkward because it seems forever a thing that Oda can only draw Nami and Robin and slight variations of those two in other female characters lately lol
And nothing else noteworthy happened, just Big Mom chasing them. Jeez...what a short chapter @_@ maybe I'm just too used to anime episodes of Dragonball Super lately.

You didn't knew that? That was revealed when she first met with the SHs.
-

It's easy to forget with all of the emphasis on her being an actress and bride.
-
You didn't knew that? That was revealed when she first met with the SHs.
We were introduced to her as the owner of a shop, never saw her bake and spent most of her time watching her preparing for her marriage. It's not that hard to forget this aspect.
-
Heck, the government even explicitly forced her to stop working not too long after she met the Straw Hats.
-
The best way to play a part is to put a part of you into your part

What if the cake theory happen but without Sanji being part of the making of the cake.
-
it will be a battle of appetite between BM and luffy :P
-
Well Big Mom has the bigger stomach but at the same time I'm not sure if ahe eats non-sweet stuff.
-
well who knows, remember how did luffy defeated cracker?? XD
-

Pudding saving the day again then.
-
This post is deleted!

I wonder if luffy can combine tankman body with boundman arms. That would give him perfect attacks and defense at the same time. And what about king kong…gatling? Next finisher?
-

Sanji has to have some moment with Pudding, so I can't see how he can't be involved.
Also the kindness and Vinsmokes hating food stuff.
This line might actually mean something:

All the more reason she was spewing shit from the start!
Official trans just say he's very manly.

Unless Sanji somehow miraculously hears about his sweet Pudding's attempt to quell Big Mom's hunger illness and wants to lend her a helping hand, this is what I'm expecting at the moment.

Do you really think that all Sanji is going to make in an island made of food with a family who lambasts him for cooking is a washed up bento?
-
I will eat Sardines with peanut butter if Sanji and Pudding don't make this cake.
-
@Count:

If that were to actually happen, I'd be saddened that Oda let the chance slip by so nonchalantly. That, and narrative plot points not being dealt with properly, hence why I say "at the moment" for now. Even though I'm just riding the roller coaster set by Oda, I am definitely awaiting the part in the arc where Sanji can shine through his culinary skill instead of with brute force, which wouldn't suffice anyway.
-

That would be one of the greatest troll Oda ever pulled.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Maybe the point will be that the reason Pudding made the cake is that she was inspired by Pudding's kindness.
-
No thanks, Oda's trolled me enough by making Vergo stronger than the Monster Trio and putting half the Straw Hats on a ship 1/3 through Dressrosa.

Vergo only walked over Sanji as far as I remember.

Yeah, but Sanji and Zoro were usually the go-to guys to take on the Big Bad's henchmen, so for said henchman to prove himself to be on an unexpectedly high level was pretty big, and to Sanji's expense.
(Though I do think Sanji's battle with Vergo was more worthwhile than whatever Zoro did against Monet. Hoping Sanji gets a moment of triumph in this arc, and for Zoro to be brought down to Earth in Wano)

Well Zoro did get crushed Monet who can be considered the henchman of the big bad. Sanji just happen to have become the hype guy.

…And you're cool with that?

@Kaido:
…And you're cool with that?
I have been full of disdain for Zoro since Thriller Bark and I'm still fine with Sanji. I don't like how their portrayal are handled(Zoro couldn't be kept down even when facing a VA) but it doesn't mean I have to be delusional about it. They both faced a top officer and we saw the difference of portrayal. And they both faced people out of their league at the moment(Fuji and Doffly) and again we saw the difference in portrayal). I rather be amused by it and poke fun at it even if it sometimes rub me the wrong way and makes me want to go on a rant(Zoro's bounty).
I like making parallel between sea kings, giants and Vice admirals. All creatures feared/respected for their strength/dangerosity in the world of One Piece and all creatures that are solely/primarily used for the purpose of hyping powerful important opponents.
Smoker became a VA and since then as been a hype tool. Tashigi is also only used for hype and I like to believe at the end of the manga she will be a VA. And Coby streak consist of quickly getting dispatch when he shows up.
The marines have VA. Sea beasts have sea kings. Strawhats have Sanji. He is simply a new addition to that category of creatures.

Oda isn't that big of a troll.

I thought we get two chapters this week, where that at?

I thought we get two chapters this week, where that at?
There is a break this week. Next week, we get a chapter. It is a double-issue of Jump. However, double-issues of Jump do not contain two chapters. They are released during major holidays as a way of having a Shonen Jump issue dedicated to two weeks instead of one. So the week after next week, Shonen Jump will not release any chapters for their series. Then the week after that, the schedule is back to normal.
-
I thought we get two chapters this week, where that at?
Don't fall for that backstabber snake in the grass called double issue! It softly seduces you with the sweet feeling of getting two chapters and then - when you're trapped in its charming spell - it shows you its true face and stabs you right in the back by giving only one chapter at all.

Someone please hold me.
