I really like Ashido, so it was cool to see that she was a bit of a big deal in middle school. Almost a non-shithead version of Bakugo. I also thought it was pretty neat that despite her apparently having a powerful quirk she was able to resolve both situations without violence. Hopefully, she eventually gets some Kirishima-level focus.

Do they translate data books in English? I want to start buying the volumes. But it would be nice to have the data books on hand too.
-
Maybe that big Villain that we just seen will play bigger role than all of us expected ? Like being the one to kill All Might for example.
-
Only seen one piece and dragon ball databooks translated. In Spanish.
Sorry, I guess it is too much work. And if that detail was revealed like this, I'd guess it won't be used in the main plot.
-
That new ending really makes me want to play a MHA fantasy RPG.
-
Absolutely love the new ED. The JRPG colour spread is probably my favourite Hero acadameia colour spread so it was great to see it in action. So many great cuts like Bakugou's entfance scari g off Todoroki's horse. I was waiting for All Might to appear and it didn't dissapoint!
-
Using the JRPG color spread for an ED was genius. Reminds me of how Oda's color spreads are used in anime intros/EDs. I like the new OP song. I think it edges out the last OP, but still doesn't beat The Day.
The new OP confirmed that the End of Term Test arc is confirmed for being adapted in this cour. That makes complete sense since I can't see how that can be dragged out over the course of twelve whole episodes. The best ending this season could get is the Deku-Shigaraki mall confrontation chapter.
-
I didn't care for the opening in visuals or music. But that ending is my favorite of the series. I need the Bakugou screen grabs from it for my new avatar lol.
This episode was actually kinda nice cause it fleshed out some of the students meeting the heroes. But it didn't feel unnecessary.
-
@Count:
The best ending this season could get is the Deku-Shigaraki mall confrontation chapter.
The problem with that is the big hunk of falling action that occurs after that encounter which would make for an awkward ender or season opener.
I'd really love it if the show ended with the cliffhanger of seeing Shigaraki's face right before that interview. The conversation would give them a good chance to work some recap in.
-
Love the new ED and the opening animation, not a fan of the song of the opening, though.

I agree with everything. Something about how the interview ends in that whole falling action police procedural phase feels like a weak opener to a new season or an awkward finale. And that would be a nice opportunity to recap everything.
-
new ending gives me konosuba vibes. Yay :D

Remembering the sole good time of Shuhei Hisagi…
-
That was a really touching flashback, and that final page was the cherry on top of the cake that was the last two chapters.
-
So Crimson Riot could harden his hair? Is that right? You could say he would charge head on crime.
-
Aww. I liked this chapter. Kirishima and Mina definitely being more fleshed out. I hope some of the others can get the same treatment too.
There was an additional short chapter too. Lol. Bakugou does not discriminate in his anger.
-
Usually and overabundance of swears feels out of place but an angry Bakugou just spiralling into a sea of fucks and shits seems right.
-
I love that he still answered Midnight's question without missing a beat
-
Damn this chapter was amazing easily one of the best chapters of the manga.
"A 'manly heart' to me is a life lived without regret"
love that quote
-
Awesome chapter. Kirishima's flashback was great. I never really get tired of seeing the "I'm always afraid" moral, and I really liked how it also added that a scarier thought is seeing innocent people die. Simple and effective. Ashido playfully criticizing Kirishima putting so much of a determined burden on himself was really nice too. It kind of reminded me of Squirrel Girl from Marvel comics.
!
I was kind of hoping that defeating Force Field guy specifically would have been more creative than just overpowering his defense, but I'm fine with the battle finally ending so we can move on with the plot.

Man this side chapter came out on the databook, are you telling me it took them this long to translate?

Jaiminis box is a fairly recent startup for translators, isn't it?

Thought Kirishima met Crimson Riot in the past but this is better. Liking a hero because his quirk is similar makes sense. Now I wanna know why Kirishima didn't field train or intern with him.
Let's keep the intern flashbacks going. We still don't know why Tsuyu wants to be a hero, and Nejire needs more development.

He's described as an old hero, so assuming he's even still alive he could be as old as Gran Torino and retried.
-
Yeah it seemed like Crimson wasn't an active hero by the start of the series.
-
…Which makes it all the more impressive that a stodgy old-guarder would be down with progressive, anti gender role thinking like, "Chivalry ain't about what's between your legs!"
That's not the translation I submitted but I wish I could've.
-
I won't lie, this whole "manly spirit" annoys the hell out of me and this flashback keeps repeating it the whole time. So while it was good to see Crimson Riot subverting the expression by stating it has nothing to do with being a "man", up to that point the damage was already done.
It also doesn't help that I can't for the life of me like Kirishima. I mean, he is cute as hell, but he is too much of a main character and I just can't empathize with those (it's not that I dislike him either, it's just that I am bored whenever those characters are focused on). So, to be honest, the last chapters have been a drag for me, but I admit it is a matter of personal taste than objective quality.
-
A lot of the damage is done by translating it as "manly spirit" if we're being honest. It's a little too literal, whereas "chivalry" (describing a set of noble character traits meant to be exhibited by knights in shining armor) kind of has some testosterone-linked implications but isn't quite as in-your-face about it.

Completely agree (except I actually like Kirishima). The flashback started decently enough, but this chapter felt generic to me. Not bad, just…. Eh.
-
I liked it. I liked that Kirishima was able to draw inspiration from the hero he admired. Given the Kirishima/Midoriya parallels I've seen, it was a nice touch.
-
I actually liked the speech, one of the rare cases in which the traits of a hero are articulated pretty neatly.
-
This manga has so many best girls it's insane.
One of the highest concentration of fantastic girls with awesome likable personality.I can't wait to see Jirou and Tooru's story too. (Jirou being my fav.)

Right? There's no mean girl or tsundere. Even the girl who likes blood isn't awful as a character. Although some of the female pro heroes are a bit on a slippery slope. I can't really fully like Mt Lady or the Snake woman lol. But the rest have bveen pretty cool.
-
Another solid chapter

We still need to know Sato's story.

Personally I adored this set of flashbacks and the doubts he has deep down makes him a more interesting character than the simple 'manly' happy go lucky character many first thought of him as. I'm a little biased as I tend to like the 'get over my self doubt' characters in series such as Usopp, Rock Lee and Krillin, but I tend to find someone with hang ups a little more enjoyable to watch when they hopefully get to shine.
The flashback itself is simple, but effective(much like his quirk). He's not involved with some immense incident like Bakugou, He doesn't have anyone to avenge, nor is his backstory THAT tragic, but when he's at his lowest point of questioning exactly who he is and what he is, a hero's speech makes him fortify his own will. For a secondary character, Kirishima's story could be just as worthy of him being the lead protagonist as Deku's or Todoroki's IMHO. Horikoshi in general has done a great job with Class A's development thus far, and I hope he can continue to make the other classmates shine as brightly as he has with Deku, Uraraka, Ida, Todoroki, Bakugou and now Kirishima.
I'm looking forward to Crimson Riot, providing he's still alive, seeing at how effectively he managed to influence Kirishima into following the path of heroics.
…now my main question is why did Ashido want to go into heroics?!? What's HER motivation and story?
-
Excellent chapter. I've been wanting more Mina for a long time, and we finally got some. But now I'd like to see her in action!
-
I saw a mention that Crimson Riot had All Might-esque eyes and it prompted a thought to my.
This is pure speculation based on a minor similarity at best, so take it for what it's worth, but I wonder if there's any possibility, depending on when he was active of course, that CR was a prior wielder of One For All. We don't know nearly enough to say of course, but what do y'all think of that possibility?
Alternatively, given similarities in attitude, could Fatgum have a connection to Crimson (former sidekick, fanboy like Kirishima)? I kind of like the idea that Fatgum took Kirishima on partly because he recognized the legacy name.

I was on your boat entirely at first, but seeing that Kirishima is an endearing self-doubting character like Tanuki concisely put it, the "we're all afraid" angle, feeling insecure by watching Ashido instead of a token conceited person like Bakugou, and the gender subversion was effective enough for me. Don't really care for Fatgum outside of his Quirk though. Too generically brash and impetuous for my taste.
I only find the end of the chapter in present-time lackluster
-
I'm also part of the group of people that think that too many flashbacks are killing the tempo of the fights, thus an action packed arc is starting to feel boring, let's hope it gets better as we get closer to the end.
Another thing I don't get about these flashbacks is what exactly made Kirishima want to become a Hero? He has some doubts about himself and he wants to help people when he sees someone in trouble, but neither of those seem like necessary conditions (Ashido helped her classmates being a normal student)Here I'll stop with my unpopular opinions. Hero Academia is a fine manga that does an excellent job at building it's characters, but maybe it should focus less in it's side characters and move the plot forward.

Something something fist inches away from connecting with Wapol's face something something

I thought it was clear that it was because of Crimson Riot, someone having a Quirk similar to Kirishima, being both prideful and somebody who risks their life for others.
!

I suppose that is the correct assumption. I just took it the other way around, as if Kirishima, who is wondering if he should keep trying to be a Hero, realized that he only admires Crimson Riot because he has the qualities he lacks and a similar quirk, not because he is a Hero.
Maybe I'm not making any sense, I'm not fluent enough to express it better

No, I get what you're saying. But I think it's… Both? That he now realizes he's wanted to become a "manly" hero for such a long time like Crimson Riot that he almost completely forgot the spark that made him want to do that until that moment. If that makes sense.
-
I prefered this chapter to the previous one(except for break dance). It really dives into the Hardboy self-doubt and reason to persevere. I think one chapter would have been enough and give less the effect of a cut from the story. 1 chapter focusing on his normal schoolife was a strange choice for this moment.
-
I'm fine with the flashbacks because the characters themselves can no longer fight at the end. Thinking about it, every member of Class A so far had a their flashback during a battle. Going by previous arcs, when the flashbacks end its full steam ahead on the action train.
-
I liked this week's episode a lot, but two things caught my eye:
First, the official subs have Deku saying Full Cowling despite the seiyu very clearly saying Full Cowl. The Viz translation goes with Full Cowl too I think so why change it?Also, I had been under the impression that these events happened sometime during the day or late afternoon, not during the evening. I don't recall the sky being darkened at all in the manga unlike in the summer camp arc.

The Viz translation goes with Full Cowl too I think so why change it?In the manga we actually changed to Full Cowling at a later point, to better reflect the actual reference in English (which is to vehicle engine cowling- not a "cowl" like Batman's).
Reprints of old volumes and all future volumes going forward should definitely have it as Cowling (which explains why the subs have it that way, since they're at least referencing my style guide, if not sticking to it 100%). -
Hm, not sure I agree with diverging from the Engrish but at least it's consistent. It's something of a tribute to Gran Torino's Jet too, but I'm sure that played a part in your decision.

I always thought the cowl thing referenced the way he was 'suiting up' with his power by activating it across his whole body.
