Chapter 866: Natural Born Destroyer

Even having them die to BM would be total crap. We. Need. That. Info.
Though… How many men does it take to deliver a message?
-
Does the town with the big castle in the panels where the giants are sentenced to death is already known of us or is it a new one ? I guess it must be one of some importance in One Piece world

That looked really much like Marine Ford.
-
And my prediction for the flashback: Regardless how it plays out with the Giants, Carmel will appear and defuse the situation. And at the end Linlin will give Carmel a bear hug and then Carmel just disappears - with Linlin either due to Pudding or just herself being too traumatized completely oblivious to the fact that with her hug she just killed her on the spot.

Thank you. I didn’t remember it had round tower like that

Well, I'll be damned, this chapter had so much of the things I love about One Piece, I have had to read the chapter several times. I am not sure why I have seen so much disappointment though. At least in regards of how much we saw of Elbaph; for me it was clear that we wouldn't even see the spread of the island, or even the tree. I think this is confirmed by Oda purposely placing two dialogue boxes on top of the tree in this and the previous chapter. Before going in detail about the chapter some """""jokes""""" I wanted to get out of the way:
- Kaido King of the Beasts: BURN YOU HERETIC! Can you not see that 47 flipped is 74?! Ay, dios mio.
- For a while I have thought that Ussop would come to Elbaph and somehow his new title of God would come into play with the giant's beliefs. But, could it be….that he is meant to succeed Caramel and become HOLY FATHER USSOP!
Cover page: the more they flesh out the captains of the pseudo-fleet the less I think all of them would show up in Wano. Although, discussing with a friend, he proposed maybe 1 of the members to be present. In that case Barto or Harjudin would be the best. The former to tie in his desire to see the entire Straw Hat crew in action, and the latter to tie to Elbaf after Wano. Did I ever mention that I find that Buggy showing up in Wano seeking revenge against Straw Hat more likely than the fleet? I understand why, but if Boa Hancock can manage to influence men and women alike, it would have been even funnier if men and women both refused to marry due to Cavendish's popularity.
Right from the first page, and as many have mentioned, we can see the problem with Linlin. Lack of parenting. I am not going to deny that maybe the parents tried to teach her right from wrong in regards to her strength, but Linlin as a 5 year old seems to be extremely impulsive. Not to mention if she was already durable at that age, her lack of experiencing pain [besides hunger] would be the major catalyst to her actions and how twisted her problem solving skills are.
The amount of characters that we got to see again from giant captains, Oimo, Harjudin, not to mention any of the characters that I may have not recognized. For example kid Urouge:ninja: could be Du Feld, their teeth, lips are similar and the scar could have gotten reopened during his ascent as the fortune king. Was really refreshing, and like Greg said a lot of research and work done to have timelines coincide. Do you all remember the girl that provoked the fight between the two giants? Did we see her again this time around? Not to mention if any relatives of the kids are around during the wedding. Mostly seeing at Panda kid, and the exiled prince.
Regarding Linlin's absurd size and strength and her being a human makes her even more of a mystery. Was she also part of a gigantification process, we know that there has been many attempts to achieve it.
Mother Caramel, I actually like her character, because she is flawed. It makes her real, her ambitions to forgive, and live in a world of acceptance is what blinded her from not teaching restraint or accountability of ones actions, regardless of how pure the intentions were. As seen as how she handled the bear slap. "You helped them become friends…" Eh...
I also love some of the clarifications among the different translations. When she broke the bones of Eiri, it is also added that he is a giant. Which builds nicely to when she destroys the village and the giants not being able to handle her.
Waterfall and Mountain, it sure would be interesting to meet them again. We learn so much about the customs of Elbaph, their thoughts on Mother Caramel and her mission, their acceptance of it, but as well as upholding the tradition of their culture, it is awesome. I found extremely funny that the Semla are huge in comparison to actual humans, and Linlin finished three plates worth of them. Everyone should have taken a hint that she should have not participated in the fasting.
--- Those were my thoughts on the chapter, without going too much into speculation
Regardless if it is the giant or Linlin herself, mother Caramel did not just go missing. The current arc has been a mesh of truths and lies, intertwined and exposed to us at the same time. With the current flashback, I am inclined to say Pudding did mess with Linlin's memories, but at the latter's request. However, once she was in, she may have modified more than she was asked to do.
-
Oda: Here are 2 guys that could expose us to all kinds of interesting information. Think of what kind of crazy shit they've seen. They died of old age, though.
Aren't the important infos either from 800 years ago or Roger's time? I can't really remember something from around 400 years that was preented as greatly interesting.

Me neither, but they have lived long enough that at least their parents would have seen the repercussions of the events of the void century. And if they are still alive, then they may have knowledge of the transitions from the Void century to the start of the Pirate Age with Roger. Having lived for so long, maybe they could have tales of the ~first pirate~.
-
Norland's flashback was presented as a story inside Wiper's flashback told to him by that one elder. Nola was really nice addition but it was in no way necessary for the story. And Robin isn't just a glyphgirl, she's archaeologist. I'd like to see her use her brain and skills like when the ship has fallen from the sky.
Even if Nola wasn't a crucial part in any way, he was still there as a link to the past.
I'm having doubts Robin will have the chance to practice archaeology on anything non glyph related before they get to Raftel itself. It might just be one of those things Oda decides to skip for the sake of faster plot progression.
After I wrote it, I started thinking. Do two Giantbeards know Norland? His life would be in their childhood/adolescence.
Well he traveled the New World. I doubt we've seen the last of him, considering he already popped up unexpectedly on Green Bit.

It's what we haven't heard of that piques my interest. OP world has a rich history and I'm really hyped to find out if there were yet unknown forces at work that helped shape the world as it is now.
We know nothing of the world 400 years ago expect what we found out through Noland and his travels. Then there's a gap until 200 years ago which is when WG and Fishman Island became allied.
What are the odds nothing interesting happened in 200 years?

We could have seen her decipher the Road Poneglyph in Zou instead of having everything boringly explained to her, at least. Kind of like how it would have been interesting to see how Chopper would set up healing operations on Zou instead of skipping right to the aftermath. But maybe we can still get something like that if there is a bunch of Kozuki Clan crafts in Wano Country. All we really need is a moment like either when the ship fell from Skypiea like Koliber mentioned or when we saw her exploring Shandora.
But yes, it's probably Oda's pacing. As usual.
-
That Tontatta Granpa looks like he knows good stuff about Norland, hopefully Leo's cover story let us know that thing.
-
Splendid chapter, we got so much insight into Linlin's character.
First off, I like Linlin's design as a child, she expresses childhood innocence and creepy malevolence equally well. This chapter also does an excellent job of setting her up as a dark counterpart to Luffy, her relationship to Sister Carmel is a neat reflection of the dynamic between Luffy and Shanks. I enjoy the idea of Linlin's dream being inspired by the actions of Carmel in particular. The implication that the winter solstice festival may have inspired Prometheus and Zeus was a nice touch as well. I get why she seems to feel entitled to get whatever she wants, when you never had any boundaries placed on you why would you think otherwise? I appreciate how Elbaf looks here too, its viking settlement appearance goes a long way in lending the flashback a nostalgic quality.
-

She did have boundaries. Carmel tells her her treatment of the Longarm and Fishmen tribes are wrong. People stop her from eating as many Semla as she wants, and then she goes through 7 days of fasting despite being clearly unhappy with it. Mother Carmel asked people to forgive Linlins destructiveness because she was so clearly well-intentioned, she didn't say Linlin could do whatever she wanted.

True, but Carmel neglects to make it clear those actions are wrong. Linlin listens to Carmel because she likes her, not because Carmel asserts authority. Linlin doesn't display any fear of negative consequence, doesn't look like there was much of a boundary to me.

^ This. Oda will make it happen in any form that's plot convenient. If Oda wasn't in the mood to have a quick and redundant secret final form showdown, he would've just written all of the zombies automatically losing their shadows back after Moria gets knocked out in the same way that all of the toys transformed back into humans when Usopp scared Sugar into unconsciousness.
-
Oda hasn't even gone as far as to show if Monty is actually unconscious or if the screaming just knocked him over.
-
@Kaido:

I have the same line of thinking. But all I know for sure is that it's a bit of a waste to have Big Mom collecting a whole library of rare creatures and never get any payoff from that besides showing a random morbid hobby she has.
-
Sure, let's talk about what will happen 63 years later of this flashback.
-
I don't really see what's the problem when the end of the next chapter is probably going to zoom forward 63 years later anyways.
-
But I still wanna see Early Teens Linlin.
-
I do too. But I'm not sure if Oda's all that interested judging by his pacing.
-
After the Semla incident, it is likely that we will have flashes going forward as Big Mom ascends to her current position and then, maybe, the launchers are fired. I would not be surprised if it just ended with them not firing yet.
I think it would be cool that as we move forward in the flashback it starts getting distorted, and we see it is because Big Mom is struggling against the poison.

I mean yeah, if its convinient it's gonna happen, but after Dofla went through all the trouble of making sure sugar couldnt be in danger at any time, shouldnt monty then too, be someone who is only guarded, and not out in open field, like when they attacked luffy with the enraged army, if his ability worked that way?
-
Yeah, it is easy to say how convenient, but it was established that the abilities worked different either verbally, like with Moria and with the context, no one knew that Sugar even existed, it was only thanks to Kyros. The amount of protection Sugar had on top of her presence being concealed(Trebol) is better built up to how the abilities work.
Mont D'Or seems to just have collapsed to his knees, the same way Smoothie did. And the fact that he goes into battle also clues in that the ability would not dispel if he lost. Or, maybe it is arrogance that makes him risk going into battle.
-
I'm not sure how Mont D'Or's abilities work, however I can't help but smile when thinking about all the flame wars that would start if Monet was to arrive along all the captured creatures at the Tea Party.
-
I haven't seen it brought up yet but does anyone else think that Waterfall-Beard and Mountain-Beard are Dorry and Broggy's fathers? If you look back to Little Garden, those two have similar Beards to the two introduced in this chapter (except their beards are much much shorter)..
Because Yarle and Yorle's names are so similar I'd like to believe they are brothers. If they are both still alive right now and the StrawHats do get to meet them in Elbaf, it's probably because they both refuse to die until the winner of that duel returns home. Hopefully Dorry and Broggy return to Elbaf towards the end of the Elbaf arc

Unlike Monty and his ability to jail rare specimens, Sugar was instrumental to Dofla and his grand scheme. I think if everything BM built over the years hanged on Monty's ability working properly, he'd be better protected. (Although, considering BM pirates already legendary reputation here, I wouldn't bet on it. :ninja:)

Makes me remember discussions about differences between sleeping and being knocked out, that lasted for weeks here. Almost forgot about that.

I don't see Monty's prisoners being relevant right here, right now for two reasons:
1. Many of them were already freed when Jinbe lit the place on fire. Said fire likely killed them.
2. The wedding is currently taking place on an island in the sky, with no way in or out except the Mirro-World. -

2. I agree, but I still think that it's wasteful plotline-wise. -
I have no desire in seeing more party crashers.
There is already too many sausages up there.
-
We could at least see Pound again. It's really awkward how we haven't seen him ever since Cracker got defeated.

i dont think oda's ever been one to show the intermediate steps much between flashback and current act, he likes to mostly leave those vague, with robin being the biggest exception and even then in the manga it's less than half a chapter
I wouldnt chalk that up to oda's quicker pacing just how he writes stories in general
Though we will probably get some background on why she decoded to become a pirate, though elbaf clearly held the giant pirates in high esteem, so her being banished or whatever will probably show her a bit with her motivationz changing

I dont think interesting pieces of characterization that dont influence the main plotline are necessarily wasted plot oppurtunities.

I agree. He tends to only shift between child and adult forms of characters in flashbacks.

But this quirk ends up becoming a major part of the arc, such as how she interacted with Brook. That's why I think it would be a shame if we didn't either learn more about it or see the creatures released. Luffy's weirdo loving gags are hardly ever plot relevant.

Imo its a subtle luffy is a lot like big mom but a better person thing, I think her fascination is just the same childlike wonder, like ai could see big mom being awed by the same stuff luffy is

"Village's Lord, Goldberg" (Jaimini) or "Rold, Gold and Balg" (mangastream) ??
Goldberg - Village's Lord is the right translation.
I've jsut read my official raw chapter. I'd say neither of the translations is correct.
It seems Road (ロード) and Goldberg (ゴールドバーグ) are two different persons' names. They seem to be based on The Road Warriors and Bill Goldberg, professional wrestlers.
We've seen a Giant named Stansen, who is probably based on Stan Hansen.[hide]Maybe this kid..?
[/hide]FYI, Oda is a big fan of professional wrestling according to Minoru Suzuki. -

That giant looks nothing like ole Stan Hansen but it's a cool connection. Would have liked to see a giant named Goldberg with some sort of winning streak.

Thank you sandman. You're the god. -
Guess Road and Goldberg will be Loki's best buds/lieutenants/executives when we get to Elbaf.
-
I guess Goldberg real name is Gol D. Berg

Yay for Memorial Day, I can get these done early again~ Seeing as this was a dialogue-heavy chapter, there were a lot of differences today.
- Mangastream has Linlin say "Are Mommy and the others going somewhere?", making it sound like she's talking to the pair of people with her about her mother. Both Jaimini's Box and VIZ make it clear that the woman there is her mother, as Linlin is directly addressing her as "Mama" (and in VIZ, she also calls the man there "Papa").
- MS has Linlin's father telling her mother, "Quit crying already!", which makes him seem pretty insensitive. However, both JB and VIZ instead say "Don't cry yet". What's more, MS mentions "casualties", implying that Linlin has killed people at age 5, whereas the other two translations use "destruction" (JB) and "damage" (VIZ). In fact, Linlin's father in general sounds less harsh in the VIZ version: "Don't cry yet, my dear! After all the damage she caused, exile was a merciful sentence! She was just too much for us."
- All three translations describe Dorry and Brogy disappearing slightly differently: MS just uses "It's a legend", JB says "Or so the legend goes", and VIZ states "They passed into legend".
- Both scanlations have Carmel promising, "I will lead/guide them!" (as in, the giants), whereas the official translation has her say "I will show you the way!" (as in, everyone present), and says "you" again in the next part in a place where the scanlations didn't use any pronouns at all: "I can guide you to a brighter world . . ."
- MS calls her orphanage the "Lamb's House", while JB uses "Sheep's House". VIZ names it "House of Lambs".
- The line from the one kid about "They dumped you here like a load of garbage" is another MS-ism. Both JB and VIZ just say she was abandoned. Later, the line about Linlin giving the bear "a spanky" is another one; the latter two translations use "hit/smacked him".
- When Linlin is crying after accidentally killing the bear, she is saying "Why" in MS, "How weird" in JB, and "It doesn't make sense" in VIZ.
- Both Jaimini's and VIZ clarify that Eyri (the one whom Linlin tried to smack a mosquito off of) is one of the Giants, which MS did not specify.
- In both scanlations, after asking everyone to forgive Linlin, Carmel calls her "a kind girl". The official version has her say "She only means well!"
- The official translation also has Oimo refer to himself in the third person.
- MS has another giant tell Hajrudin "Fight with yourself!", with the implication of 'I'm not gonna spar with you, do it yourself'. However, the other two translations use "Your true opponent is yourself" (or something similar in JB's case), as a way to tell him he needs further discipline. Also, the two former Giant leaders call him by his full name, Hajrudin, in MS, but use the nickname "Rydin" for him instead in the other two versions. (Or maybe that's the name of the trainer? ¯_(ツ)_/¯)
- The names of said former Giant leaders are also a bit different in each version. For the first one, he is called "Yorle Fallbeard" by MS, "Waterfallbeard Jorl" by JB, and "Beardfall Jorul" by VIZ. The second guy is named "Yarle Mountbeard" by MS, "Mountainbeard Jarl" by JB, and "Beardhill Jarul" by VIZ. (So in other words, MS messed up the order of the surnames and given names, and VIZ swapped the order of the two words that make up their surnames.)
- MS just has them say that they've come to call on the children "of the village". In JB and VIZ, they explicitly say they're inviting the children from the House of Lambs.
- After proclaiming that they're celebrating the birth of Prince Loki, MS also names three others: Rold, Gold, and Balg. Jaimini's rolls all three into one: a lord born in the village, "Goldberg". VIZ, meanwhile, has two names, like Sandman said above: "Rodo" and "Goldberg".
- The name of the young Giant girl who was explaining traditions to Linlin is different in all versions, too: "Gerth" in MS, "Gelz" in JB, and "Gerd" in VIZ.
-

waterfallbeard and mountainbeard sound so much cooler imo
