@Kaido:
Where did "Animal Kingdom Pirates" come from?
I guess because "Animal Kingdom Pirates" sounds more awesome than "All kind of animals Pirates" what is the literal translation

Animal Kingdom Pirates sounds fine to me. What are the scanlators throwing around?

Hundred Beast Pirates/Beast Pirates/Beasts Pirates.
Argentina? I guess you are the Mutaito guy again?
@joekido:
It's him again. Why is he's not understanding that you can't get volumes from people.
No doubt about it. Once I opened my account on my comp and I started checking the notifications some days ago, I found a pm from him asking if I have volumes, lol. The same behavior that Mutaito displayed to Aohige.
Animal Kingdom came from "Hyaku-juu" which literally is the kanji for "hundred" and "animal" but it actually means "all manner of beast/animal." A common use of that is "hyaku-juu no ou" which is "king of the beasts" aka Lion.
Kaido's title is "Hyaku-juu no Kaido" so, given the implication, and the reference to him as the strongest creature alive, I called him "Kaido, King of the Beasts." As an analogue I decided to go with Animal Kingdom for his crew, since it's implied that he rules over them, and they obviously have a wide variety of animal-powers in the Gifters.
Interesting, thanks for the explanation. Although it doesn't sound as spectacular as "Hundred Beasts Pirates". We'll get used to it, I'm sure.
And I keep forgetting this, your translations are the official Viz translations we're all (or well, some of us at least :D) buying or are you only translating for ALPHA (that wouldn't make much sense I guess, but I just wanna make sure)?
Yes, his translations are in the volumes are well.
Only after Volume 65(?) or so though.
Alright, that was going to be my second question then, thanks. Looks like I haven't read any of his official translations yet.
I want that third box set already. Dang it.
@Galaxy:

Starting volume 65 as far as I can tell. But according to the edition notice he was also involved in volume 64.
Chapter 652 was the first chapter that was included in the very first issue of Shonen Jump alpha (01/30/2012) when Stephen started working on One Piece if I remember it correctly.
If I remember correctly, Stephen said his first chapter he did was the one right after the flashback in 64, where the manga was introducing the New Fishman Pirates for a second time, where they were making the citizens step on a picture of Otohime. He said he did that one as a test/pre-screen.
Hey Stephen (or anyone else who knows about this), I've got a question about the terms Super Rookie and Supernova! Are they interchangeable or are Supernova distinctly only the ones from the Worst Generation (excluding BB, of course).
Because at least on the wikia (yeah yeah, I know), it looks like it's an interchangeable term:
| Japanese Name: | 超新星(スーパールーキー) |
| Romanized Name: | Chōshinsei (Sūpā Rūkī)
|
I need to know in order to end a debate =))
Thanks!
In Chapter 600, Caribou is called a super rookie, with the kanji for supernova - 超新星(スーパールーキー). Similarly in Chapter 706, Bartolomeo is called a rookie, with the kanji for supernova - 超新星(ルーキー). So yes, they're interchangeable.
Rookie or Super Rookie is also pretty much the only way even the Worst Generation are referred to prior to the timeskip (either as furigana for supernova, or with katakana alone); the only time I can think of off that they're called Choushinsei is in the chapter title "The Eleven Supernovas" (and the corresponding Volume title).

That is correct - It has been only a couple of weeks that I checked that myself: Choshinsei 超新星 (Supernova) with Hiragana as Furigana ちょうしんせい only appears in chapter 498. Even Caribou is written with the Kanjis for Supernovae (超新星) but with the Katakana Furigana for Super Rookie (スーパールーキー) Compared to that Cavendish is called in chapter 704 only Rookie in Katakana (ルーキー) without the Kanis (超新星) for Supernova
Hello. I want to buy the digital volumes of One Piece, but it seems that having a US based credit card is a requirement. None of the possible ways explained above worked for me. Please someone tell me what shall I do.
It seems I have a stalker

That guy seriously has a problem. Can't he just download high quality volumes if he doesn't want to buy them and stop bothering you guys?
When will be the release of volume 78?? It's been a while already.

It releases on May 3rd. Volume 77 hasn't even come out yet though (that'll be on February 2nd).

Why do you say that volume 77 hasn't come out? The web shows that it has:

Of course, it's probably on the shelves in some stores early, but it's not officially out yet.
Why's Zoro's name changed to "Zolo"?
The wanted poster in the RAW manga clearly says "Zoro"

It's dumb, but it had to do with early dubs.
Originally it was Zoro, I still own the early volumes (like 1-5) where they had it Zoro.
But around the time the first dub came out….well that dub was shit and it used Zolo for some reason.
I think Viz and 4kids (and later Funimation) attempted to essentially try some marketing unification so Viz changed it to Zolo.
The early dubs never seemed to last though, but by that point Viz had been using Zolo so long they kind of had to stick with it I guess? Now it floats there awkwardly....forever.
ttezukaosamu1 is mutaito aka astro guy.
Why is that guy still able to create an account? - I assume his IP gets blocked. Does he suddenly know how to use proxy servers but won't use them to get legally access to viz's volumes?
Im wondering about that too. He keeps sending me messages.

I think it also had to do with copyright reasons; apparently, at the time that the 4Kids dub started, there was still a copyright on "Zorro" (whom the One Piece Zoro actually was based off of and named for) and they didn't wanna get sued, so they changed it. VIZ then followed suit to both stay consistent with the dub and also avoid the copyright. By the time Funimation got their dub, enough time had passed that the copyright was no longer an issue, so Funimation now uses "Zoro" as it's supposed to be.

Volume 78 Cover
I feel like I keep saying it, but I wish they would reduce the size of the obnoxiously big numbering so that it doesn't cover up the artwork. New series don't use the old numbering format. Why stick to something ugly for pure consistency sake? One Piece has a loooong way to go. They should've just changed it when they started the speed up.
It does make me wonder what they're going to do when/if the series hits Vol. 100.
Also, having just read the author's notes to Vol. 77, I really wonder what on earth goes through Oda's head sometimes.

Anyone else having a difficult time finding a copy of volume 77 in good condition? I've been to 3 Barnes & Noble in my area. Each one only had 2 copies of the volume in stock, all with bent covers. Not wanting to spend the money on a damaged book, I ordered from amazon which is always a crapshoot for manga. Of course it got banged around quite a bit in shipping and has a bent cover. Just bad luck or were there some issues with packaging / shipping these volumes? Maybe just in my area? It seems like the damage is in a similar location. Maybe I'm nitpicking, but I'd rather not spend the money on a book already a bit damaged. I can just send the volume back to Amazon without any return shipping cost due to the damage. I hate when they ship soft cover books in envelopes.
Is rightstuf any better about sending books in good condition? I've never ordered from them before.

i ordered from bookdepository, will update when it arrives.
Hey, guys. So, I have a question (for Stephen or anyone else who can answer it), and I'm sorry if it's already been asked; I didn't really want to go looking through 125 pages trying to find it.
I've been reading the most recently released VIZ volumes of One Piece (Punk Hazard and Dressrosa), and I noticed that Law's switching/teleporting technique was re-named "Chambres" for some reason. (I say "re-named" because I did check and confirm that they used "Shambles" in Sabaody). Just wondering, why did that happen? Apparently in the raw Japanese versions it shows up as シャンブルズ("Shanburuzu"), which is definitely not how you'd pronounce the word "chambers/chambres", but is a good pronunciation for "Shambles". (Naturally, the words for both of those in Japanese are different anyway.) The official subtitles for the anime even use "Shambles", as does the English dub. Why did VIZ decide to change it?

Oda/his editor told them to change it.

Ah, gotcha, thanks. Huh, that's weird. "Shambles" makes a lot more sense than "Chambres" as the name for that technique. Maybe that's why I've only ever seen it called "Shambles" online, haha. Then again, I guess this isn't the first time Oda tried to give something a name in a different language and butchered the spelling vs. pronunciation. (Like how the spelling "Sabaody" is somehow supposed to sound like "Sha-bond-y".)

Actually, "Chambres" (french for room) fits the theme of Law's attacks perfectly. Also, on a colour splah of a One Piece Party chapter the latin letters were used - and we know through the first volume of One Piece Party that every detail in that spin off is overseen by the editors of One Piece

Seems a bit confusing in English but "Sabão" is the Portuguese word for soap, natively pronounced as so(like sah-bah-oun). Japanese being a pretty phonetic language just enunciated it to extremes with the "a" having a bit of a nasally quality to it. This was explained pretty well by a native tongued Portuguese forum member back during these chapters' release, hopefully I didn't butcher the explanation too badly.
funny enough, in Hebrew, soap is pronounced 'Sa bon'

My copy has the same thing going on with the spine (none of these bent cover issues people keep talking about though). But interestingly enough the Japanese volume 77 does the exact same thing. Have a look.
Seems possible the issue originates in Japan, not the west. Viz might not have been given files that fit the cover/spine properly and just had to deal with them wrapping around a little.

thanks for pointing this out, now I don't feel bad about this volume's spine looking off compared to others while it's on the shelf.
mainly because japan is suffering with me..
I'd say calling Kaido's crew "Animal Kingdom Pirates" repeats the same mistake of Buggy's "Genius Jester" epiphet, they both omit the very important 'Beast' and 'Clown' aspect of the characters, also sounds a bit lame, I believe Beast Kingdom Pirates would be more fitting.

Look, it's one thing if you prefer one or the other…but saying that Jester/Animal somehow omit any aspects is completely false. Why? Because they're essentially the same words as the ones you're suggesting.

Those words are pretty much synonyms.
And they don't lose connotations. Calling a person an "animal" is essentially the same as calling them wild and brutish.
