@Kaido:

That is not true either
-
@Kaido:

that's not right,as a translation can not always be technically right or wrong.in a translation,a lot of different nuances and factors have to be considered, and context should also be taken into account.it is also not really necessary that a sentence or words will have only one direct translation in other languages.as such, stylistic differences are inevitable

March is upon us. I really hope we're getting an announcement on the next Box Set. Pleeeeeeeeeease Viiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiz!! :D

On the last page of the current chapter Raizo says "Ninpo: shadow clone jutsu". Is this correct? Everywhere else in the chapter it seems to be translated to technique. Just wondering why the mixing of the two.
thanks!
-
I had Alexis handle the naming since he edited Naruto and I don't know how they styled all the ninja stuff in the English edition. Also between the other guys egging him on to do things and Raizo executing them himself, pretty much nothing was an identically repeated term, hence all the variation.
-
What do you mean by that? Third last page Law says 分身の術 and it's translated as Doppelganger Technique, last page Raizo says 分身の術 and it's translated as Shadow Clone Jutsu. Seems odd to have them so completely different when they're the same in Japanese.
-
Stephen did point out that he's not the one who handled the technique names. That was someone who worked on Naruto who did that.
-
Look, it's one thing if you prefer one or the other…but saying that Jester/Animal somehow omit any aspects is completely false. Why? Because they're essentially the same words as the ones you're suggesting.
Jester and Clown the same words? You're mistaking their use as an adjective with it's usage as a profession. A Jester and a Clown are not the same at all when it comes to the profession, which is what Buggy alludes to, a professional Clown, in a clown garb, who works in a circus. Calling him a Jester is beyond doubt a mistranslation.
And Beast obviously is meant to allude to the ferocity of Kaido and his crew, it's used mosly for ferocious creatures in comparison to "animal". -
I have no problem with jester but I have no idea why genius is used on a guy like buggy, he's crafty but his gimmick is flash, and style not being a chess master or a guy who has complex evil plans
I mean if it was more aliteration than that just seems unnessecary. He's not benn beckman
-
Jester and Clown the same words?
More or less yes they are. Jester sounds more fancy but you can call a clown that if you really wanted to. Which considering how vainglorious Buggy is fits pretty well.

No people can use Jester to refer to a clown, it's rarer, perhaps overly fancy, does bring to mind the medieval jesters, but still it's totally legit. There are lots of words you can use that can basically mean a clown. Joker can be used that way if done right, Pierrot can too, Fool etc.
Clown itself is the vaguer basic word here. And Beast obviously is meant to allude to the ferocity of Kaido and his crew, it's used mosly for ferocious creatures in comparison to "animal".
Sure it sounds cooler, but are you claiming to know that this actually is the best translation? If so why?

Say you're right! I'll bet Buggy isn't really all that powerful after all and fell into his influence through dumb luck too!
-
Didn't Stephen say he used Genius Jester for the alliteration as well? What is Buggy called in Japanese, Star Clown or something? I believe there is some alliteration in the Japanese as well.
I remember when we first found out Buggy's new War Lord title someone accused Stephen of not doing enough research, lol. I forgot all the details behind it do remember thinking Stephen's explanation for going with what he did was totally on point.
-
I think Genius Jester sounds cooler than Clown Star, but I do prefer Beast Pirates over Animal Kingdom Pirates.

Buggy's title in Japanese is "senryo doke", which means "Clown worth a Thousand Ryo". Clearly, there's a deeper meaning to "a thousand ryo" than what's literal but I'm not privy to that.
I'll try to find that podcast episode and report my findings.
Btw, though I used "Clown", the word can be replaced with any equivalent that has similar meaning. Japanese words don't necessarily translate to single, specific, exact English words.EDIT: Uh…ok, so it wasn't discussed in the chapter review or the Piece Together for that episode. We're gonna need someone with a better understanding of Japanese to help out here.

Calling them the "Animal Kingdom Pirates" makes me think of the "Animal Kingdom" theme park in Florida. "Shit, you guys, those pirates just broke out of the park again, somebody go catch 'em!"

some viz announcements on twitter

HELL YEAH! Was browsing for this just a few days ago and found nothing! I'm so happy right now!!
And we're even getting 24 volumes this time, hell yeah! -

Ooh, I was beginning to give up hope on them releasing a third set. Excellent news! :D
-
That's cool. I have a few volumes going up to 70, but 70 was when I decided to totally switch from the German version to English, so the box sets bring me there almost perfectly.
-

Why'd you decide to switch? I just started buying them in English because I got used to the language and terminology in English (although I had watched the anime before in German…).
-
There were just more mistakes and weird translations happening in the German version and since I want to move back to the states in the coming years + Stephen doing the English translations, I thought it'd just be easier to switch over.
Anime-wise I still prefer the German version, though, despite the mistakes that happen there.

The german relese contains severe mistakes and Carlsen does nothing to improve it. A publisher has a responsiblity in regards to quality and if a publisher is not able to employ editors who do their job right should not be supported (Yeah it sounds stupid and extreme but I m done with them)
I did an internship at a swiss publisher for specialists books on medicine and got a little insight in how a publishing company in general works (calculations etc.). And at my first day I was told that once they labled a deadly mushroom incorrectly what was found out right before the release and they had to destroy the whole first printing because as a publisher for medical books they have a responisbility. IT might be an extrem example and difficult to compare with a manga publisher but Carlsen did a really bad job that affects not only the translation (I don't have complains about the different naming conventions but I refere to actual mistakes like not mentioning that Kuina died the morning after the duel with Zoro e.g.) but also the touch-up art process (on many pages a lot of details are missing). I contacted Carlsen back then multiple times and I always got excuses. Compared to that, viz (Alexis) actually asked if there might be any pritning errors that should be fixed for the next printing (If viz is actually fixing some "flaws" is a different topic - at least they make a note of customer's complaints) -
There's something I'd like to ask about the Viz translations. I've been reading the Viz volumes from a library and there are several times when I feel the translation is incorrect due to context. I've noticed them in the volumes before Stephen started.
I can't remember them off the top of my head but one particular example that stood out to me was during Sanji vs Wanze, when Wanze gets dizzy after looking at Sanji's eyebrow. Sanji exclaims why Wanze's eyebrows are hypnotizing, when based on context, he should be asking how his own eyebrow is hypnotizing.
It kinda killed the joke there.
So what I want to ask is, are errors like these ever fixed in later printings? I'm sure I'm not the first to notice these errors and many of them must have been reported to Viz. And the volumes in the library look really old so I'm hoping it's just due to early printing.
I'm especially thinking about the Box Set volumes. -
@Bond:
errors
I did this a while back.
http://imgur.com/a/QdhBz/all
around 20 of those have been fixed. Not sure if they have been updated though.
IF Viz fills the box sets with brand new editions of books, then we could hunt for these mistakes and see if they've been fixed.

Well, let's hope so. Because I don't have the money to get any other books :D
I didn't know the German edition was plagued by that many faults (compared to the English one, I mean). I know that Tokyopop at least are correcting mistakes and sometimes replacing (very?) faulty volumes.
And I hate it that I can't acces the viz website. I know they might be doing this because of license reasons, but that doesn't stop me from buying their stuff anyway…so I don't understand why it's like that.

Awesome! This'll complete my collection, since I've been holding off on the gap for a while. I'll have an extra copy of Volume 70 due to assuming Volume 69 would be the last one included though.
-
I'm pretty psyched for this set. I was waiting for this before purchasing the first two, so this will give me an excuse to re-read.

You can buy on comixology.eu (using your european/german amazon account or just a german/european credit card or even a european paypal) english Shonen Jump and the viz volumes if you use a vpn client or a tool like Hola because the conent is only ip restricted and you can access the comixology.com catalaogue on comixology.eu as long as you change your ip. You only need to alter your ip during the time you purchase the content. Once you did that you can read and download the volumes/issues without using a vpn client: E.g: I subscribed to Platinum End on comixology (Used a vpn client) but now I get the latest issues automatically on my ipad/on the website withouth needing a vpn connection. Nowadays it is super easy to buy viz content

So given this recent bit of news should we be expecting a new "VS Emperors" title to replace the current New World one from volume 82 onwards?
-
If I remember correctly viz said they'll stick with new world till the end.
Time will tell. -
Pretty sure past sections of the manga have been branded similarly in Japan with no change to the English translation.
-
I hadn't heard that before, and I don't like the sound of it. I'd figured they were an accessibility thing, like the point was helping people find good jumping in points by making it clear where different storylines start and end. 50 - 60 volumes of New World certainly ain't doing that.
-
There's not much in the way of branding on the physical books that I've ever seen, but the official Jump website recaps are divided the same way, save for the Sabaody/Impel Down/Paramount War split Viz did, so I would guess they're getting at least some help from official sources in making these calls

The third box set for VIZ's One Piece is coming out this fall, and it will include two One Piece crossovers (DB and Toriko):

Nice. I'm slightly jealous that I already own those volumes. I might double dip just for the crossovers and the poster.
-
That's awesome that the third box set is coming soon!!! It will go well with my other two box sets I own already ^^
By the way, what's the latest One Piece volume released so far in the United States?

But seriously, I'm glad we got "Strong World" previously, which was the most important IMO, so any other good is okay in my book! Thanks for the info Zach!
-
it would be impossible to fit a colorwalk in the box set, but I hope Viz will release someday all the colorwalks, the databooks as well as Wanted!

It seems viz thinks Wanze says that sentence but according to Stephen's script Sanji says: "Stop getting all dizzy!!!"
