ok
The two main players behind the coup are likely the CIA and their stooge, the wannabe religious scholar Fethullah Gulen.
Welp, its bullshit. I don't really have to go farther than "IT WAS CIA" to tell that. Let alone buying into Erdogan's kooky obsession with Gulen.
The CIA (and invariably the US) has been closely involved in several assassination attempts of various Turkish leaders in the past during the heydays of the Cold War, arranged coups through its contacts in the Turkish military (you think the military just acted out of purity towards the principles of Mustafa Kemal?).
Nope. And yes I do think the military is secular and doesn't like leader's who lean Islamic like Adnan and Erbakan. And the coups aren't aligned with screwing with social-right wing leaders anyway, just some of them. The 80' one was aimed at just establishing order. Also the CIA pulling coups against right wing leaders…in the Cold War??If the CIA would be involved in fucking with Turkey like that in that time, why wouldn't they have gone after Bulent Ecevit. Who took the Kemalist party and injected it with a modern socialist element. Plus the guy conspiracy theorists love to claim was assassinated (Ozal) who I assume whoever wrote this assumes the CIA killed....was totally in deep and cosy with the US. Like he was down with Reagan and Bush and all of them. Christ.
The involvement of the CIA in Turkey was a broader part of the larger interference that the agency ran in Europe, termed as Operation Gladio.
Yeah, all those coups in Capitalist Europe. Such as the leftist oriented Portuguese one that deposed the anti-communist right wing dictatorship. The dread inconsistent tendrils of the CIA."Bulent Ecevit, a Turkish Prime Minister in the 1970s, wrote, “As Prime Minister I first became aware of its existence in 1974 through requests from Semih Sancar, chief of the General Staff, for money for secret payments to the Special Warfare Department. I was shocked.” Special Warfare Department was a special, hitherto unknown wing of the military that was only revealed in the 70s as being a faction “to organise resistence in the case of a communist occupation”, as explained by the Turkish military leadership."Ok. Where's the link to the US here? The SWD in terms of action most notably involved itself if Cyprus, which was not a sanctioned action by the US. There's a overestimation of how much control the CIA had in such groups, they funded and even trained right wing groups but then such groups tended to be loosed. And what happens next? Well shucks. Also this is ALL Cold War stuff from like 50-40 years ago. Trying to link this to 2016 is comical at best, retarded at worst.
And also, Prime Minister Ecevit was the subject of an assassination attempt mere weeks after he was made privy of the SWD’s existence. Totally coincidental, I am sure.
Alright, I'm glad this person who wrote this isn't actually here because now I'm pissed off. I mean I get pissed off when people aggressivly subscribe to intellectually lazy conspiracy theories to begin with. But gee willkers Batman! Bulent Ecevit, in 1974, being targeted for death. Turkey, in the year 1974. Just any old year! Yeah man! Total coincidence for the Turkish leader of the year 1974 to have people deathly furious with him! But because all people and events in the world lead back to the CIA and nothing exists outside of that, sure! Your dumb ass thinks the only explanation is CIA! For all reading this, go google "Bulent Ecevit Assassination Attempt" and see how quick you uncover why and who wanted to kill him. And see also why I am pissed off.
Anyway, so while such involvement was justified by the fact that the US was engaged in a protracted contest with the Soviet Union, in 1991, the collapse of the USSR should have meant an end to such machinations, right?
And in fact it did by and large. Which should signal to a thinking person that maybe Turks actually have their own complex internal politics and neighborhood that might contribute to unfortunate events.
But old habits seldom die, and entrenched political habits are like the cockroaches that will attempt to survive anything thrown at them, instead of changing their behavior and reform themselves.
This is a funny way of trying to explain how even though you no longer have a motivation for your villain, you still want to cast them in every role.
Enter Dr Zbig.Zbigniew Brzezinki is one of the most influential foreign policy people in the US that has had impact which largely shaped the direction the US took even after his departure. One of his famous (or infamous) policies had been the idea of weaponizing Islam.
Well no wonder you subscribe to the Gulen theory, you do the same "fixate absurdly on one name and attribute everything to them" method of critical thinking.
But after 1991, the machinations of the CIA in Turkey changed. No longer facing a communist regime, there was no threat of a communist takeover. But as I mentioned earlier, old habits, particularly when they have 40 years of convenience behind them die very hard, the involvement moved towards Islam and Central Asia. The brilliance behind this was that Central Asia is populated largely by Turkic people, and what better way to interfere in their politics than to involve Turkey!
That's actually a really stupid way since Turkey's relations to that part of the world are linguistic (and religious but that's meaningless in the region) and actually insanely shallow otherwise!
So out of the blue, former Turkish General, Alparslan Turkes establishes the “Society for the Struggle Against Communism”.
Like 90 years earlier Enver Pasha (one of the Young Turk leaders) also went off to Central Asia to screw with Russia (and died), dumb as it is, Turkish wierdos sometimes imagine Central Asia as their blood brothers and do things like involve themselves in their problems and fights. So was Enver Pasha also being used by the nonexistent CIA? But yeah ok, out of the blue sure.
The society espoused a distinctly pan Turkic identity and extended the identity of a Turk to former Soviet Union countries in Central Asia, and importantly even to China, as the Uighur people are considered as Turkic people.
The CIA invented Pan-Turkism?
CIA’s interests blended into this perfectly, and as Turkes was a close associate of the US, having undergone military training in the 50s and fought in the Korean War, and participated in several secretive operations during the Cold War, it probably didn’t a long time for his and the agency’s interests to match.
What interest is this? The countries that left the dead USSR that the US didn't care about anymore, because it was dead, and the US wanted….what?
As part of this, comes in Fethullah Gulen. He was an Islamic teacher who taught the Qu’ran, and sometime in his life, he and his “movement” came into being noticed by Graham Fuller, who was a former CIA operative and after leaving had gone on to work in the think tanks. Fuller espoused a grand strategy of taking over the Central Asian countries away from Soviet influence, and thus “defeating” Russia.
Literally the only sources I'm seeing talking about these two together are garbage, or pro-Gulen sites complaining about the garbage. Also how does one take Central Asian countries away from the influence of a dead country. No seriously, this bullshit relies on Cold War logic and just pretending like the end of the Cold War was irrelevant. But yeah I'm glad they found a totally new and fresh take on making this about Russia. The CIA is always the actor, and the Russians always the victim (maybe China). Nothing else happens for any reason with any motive in the world.
Gulen, who used to run schools by this point was praised by Fuller as a way to counter Russian influence, and he got the US to directly influence Gulen’s expansion into Central Asia. Gulenist schools became the breeding ground of creating a bunch of highly motivated but loyal people, who were all taught Turkes’ pan Turkic ideology which placed Turkey are the guardian of the identity. As a result of this, Russia, along with Uzbekistan banned his schools and Tajikistan placed it in strict regulation.
Tajikistan. Totally a Turkic country sure.
By 1999 however, his luck ran out, and a scandalous tape emerged, whereby he said, “work patiently and to creep silently into the institutions in order to seize power in the state” to his followers in the state.
Gulen wanted his followers to get involved with politics to influence the country. Which has about zero difference with various crackpot right wing Christian leaders who have said the same (and done!) thing for years in the US.With three seconds of google, for example:https://www.usa.church/christian-voting-guide/
The Turkish state began to file charges against him, and miraculously he developed an “illness” for which he left for the US for treatment. He’s yet to come back to Turkey, where a life imprisonment sentence awaits him.
So wait, who should I be feeling sorry for here? What's the charge?
His influence and reach, via his schools has only grown, and by 2010, he operated 100 charter schools in the US.Anyway, so he supported Erdogan initially, and the relationship ran well until 2013, when the rift widened significantly mutually.
So Erdogan was previously a CIA plant or what?
Gulen decried that the AKP had not stopped making an extensive inventory of all the adventurists and potential adventurists in his schools, and AKP on its part wanted to neuter his nefarious hold on Turkey.
Friend of Gulen for years following his controversial exile, the AKP suddenly had a rift with him to stop those same "nefarious plans" made famous since 1999? What?? I love how conspiracy theorists think they're the sharp guys who can smell bullshit, but then they seem to step in the most obvious piles more than normal people.
In 2013, it was an all out war,
There was no war let alone "all out". There were some big left wing student protests later in the year against Erdogan that were not especially hot and heavy.
and the Gulenists in the Turkish establishment were rounded and mass arrested.
What the hell does a right wing social conservative like Gulen have to do with modern socially liberal student protests. Protests that even meshed with gay pride parades at the time. The fuck?
The coup was most likely an extension of this war,
There was no fucking war in 2013 in Turkey.
with the conspirators in CIA, utilizing it and Erdogan’s unpopularity to replace him with someone else who wouldn’t deviate as much from the official script.
What's the goal. What's the script. What's the motive. What?? How is Pan-Turkism involved with Gulen, a religious leader?? What does he have to do with that? What does Erdogan have to do with that? What happened to the Central Asia plot?? What does that have to do with this?? How is it Gulen is totes CIA, and then the AKP buddy of him for years is suddenly the valiant foe of them?? What the fuck do you think happened in 2013??
Because Erdogan had started to make peace with Russia,

and began forming secret channels with Syrian government just a few weeks ago.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/turkey-coup-damascus-celebrates_us_578962ace4b08608d334b266Yeah ok.
But you see he had to go.
Maybe if you took your head out of your CIA/Russia focused ass, you'd see Turkey and neighboring countries with their own stories and problems and frictions. But nawwwww.
Unfortunately for the coup and its sponsors, Erdogan seemingly had utilized his time in the state as a great way to weaken the military’s power by empowering the police forces, and also appealing to the masses in the heartland, who had until the rise of the AKP had been just an after thought.
I like seeing a far-left nutjob clearly forcing a smile to cover up the hyper-conservative nature of the heartland constituency Erdogan has influence with.
The result of that were clear for everyone to see last night.
Poor poor Bulent Ecevit. What did he ever do to anybody as PM? Who would want to kill such an innocent man? The results of his charming blemish lacking administration are clear for everyone to see. Only the CIA would want him dead.
The CIA is not nearly as competent as dumbasses on both sides of the political spectrum insist. These are the guys who still haven't figured out how to kill Castro after sixty years.
Also, applying "THE CIA DID IT" every time something bad happens in another country robs the people of that country of agency and is borderline colonialist thinking.
I can't believe this CIA! Supporting Right Wing dictators just to get at a country they hated and demonized!–---Poor Erdogan all of a sudden! Definitely the USA was behind every aspect of this!
I couldn't make it through that murky wall of nonsense initially but your commentary helped me survive it, Zeph.
Erdogan is near literally a Turkish Republican president, we're talking the same alliance of Wall Street slimeballs and evangelical hicks, mixed with schlubs who like a leader who is "tough and strong and I can have a kebab with him".Witness him become the new darling of the far-left conspiracy crowd.
Why are so many Middle-Eastern (and leftist) people so obsessed with CIA/Zionist conspiracy theories?
@Cyan:

Not only have they ailed to kill Castro, but they had a boatload of failed attempts. Like… a lot. This ain't the movies where they just send in a lone wolf master class sniper and its done.
Our government can't even get the mail system to work. We're really not that competent that we could run any really elaborate secret conspiracies.
Why are so many Middle-Eastern (and leftist) people so obsessed with CIA/Zionist conspiracy theories?
Same reason so many people think Hillary sold us all out. Constant propoganda that blames someone else to make your side look better..

That includes South Asians too. The CIA is seen somewhat as a larger than life organization which has its control over multiple major events happening across the globe. I caught him bullshitting once about the Russia-Ukraine crisis where he also claimed that the CIA was extensively involved in it years before it started but this one went way over my head with multiple events unknown to me cramped into a conspiracy post.

Bill Cosby has apparently gone completely blind and is "living in a personal hell."
This is weird to me. If you go back in this thread a year, a year and a half to when the first allegations came forward of a rape charge, I defended the guy, and very strongly because he was a big part of my childhood and I didn't want to believe it, and I made a big rant in general about "why are we even bothering to talk about this, this isn't news." And I still sort of feel that way on the celebrity gossip topic in general, we do spend way too much time on complete nonsense when there's actual world shaking events going on. Who gives a shit about what Britanny Spears wears when she goes grocery shopping, or anything the Kardashians or Duck Dynasty guy have ever done.
And then a whole lot more women came forward and there just wasn't any doubt or reason to believe him. One person might just be a money seeker crazy fan that's exaggerating something, but once you hit two or three in short order claiming the same thing, there's not much question that he's a rapist. Once you hit fifty, holy shit, put that guy in jail, don't bother with the damn trial.
And so, a year ago my reaction would have been "Aww, that's too bad, such a shame." And now my reaction? "Aww, that's too bad, such a shame."
SO, that's weird.
Bill Cosby has apparently gone completely blind and is "living in a personal hell."
Some hard hitting Karma. @Robby:

Definitely not you Robby you kind of spelled her name wrong :ninja: @Robby:

Well you did also doubt Trump's getting the nomination though we or rather I won't hold that or this against you.
Ouch Robby you spelled Britney's name wrong.
Comic book character spells it that way. I give way more shits about the comic character than Spears.
You also casted doubt about Trump being the Republican nominee so we won't hold this against you just like that.
That was back in like, November. Based on the assumption that his level of inflamatory remarks would scare off voters, and the idea that the Republican party would be sane or responsible enough to band together and have some other bare minimum semi-reasonable middle ground candidate to really have against him. Maybe not someone they really really believed in, but at least someone they could balance against him… or at least split the vote three or four ways so he couldn't grab it outright with a majority. Its the same thing basically all the media outlets were assuming.
Obviously, that was vastly underestimating that 6% chunk of the population of blatant racists that when comprising voters gave him solid numbers in a 17 way race... while also overestimating the competence of the republic party, or their sense of self sacrifice or unity. They didn't have another reasonable John McCain type somewhere to pull out? I started dreading the inevitability after they still had a ton of guys on Super Tuesday. They took months too long to narrow their field to three people, didn't start unifying against Trump till he had a huge lead, and then both of the remainders gave up too soon and just handed the majority to Trump rather than having a split convention.
^ Was kind of hoping that mess of a post that I couldn't edit would've disappeared. Karma isn't picky about it's victims it seems.

I literally cannot comprehend this…
1.) A therapist is trying to help out an autistic lad, so... why not leave him to it? See what he can do?
2.) Someone, SOMEHOW, thought this was a suicidal situation and called 911.
3.) The cops decide to SHOOT a supposedly SUICIDAL person. That's ass backwards in itself. WTF was the logic there?
4.) Not only unarmed, he was flat on his back and hands literally in the air.

Someone, SOMEHOW, thought this was a suicidal situation and called 911. 3.) The cops decide to SHOOT a supposedly SUICIDAL person. That's ass backwards in itself. WTF was the logic there? 4.) Not only unarmed, he was flat on his back and hands literally in the air. The saving grace of this stupid, STUPID outcome is that the guy lived.

A friend of mine asked if I wanted to go out shopping, for once I'm glad I had to correct homework. Things are pretty crazy out there, I've been hearing sirens going off for over an hour and they're still going strong. Luckily, everyone I know seems to be fine so far, one of them works in a flower shop at the Stachus and is stuck there.

Stay safe man. I have 3 friends in Munich and I have only heard from one.
While we're still on European terrorists news its been reported that the attacker who drove the truck in Nice, France had multiple accomplices and it was months in planning. Still no links/evidence connecting him or his accomplices to ISIS.
