! Steven didn't defuse or delay the cluster so much as he changed the trigger type. It went from being on a timer to a proximity device.
! >! The second something comes close to hurting Steven, it's going to go off big time.
Steven Universe

! The second something comes close to hurting Steven, it's going to go off big time.
! Why exactly? Because the bubble will break if he's hurt? The other crystal gems have been critically hurt before and the bubbles they were storing the corrupted gems in didn't break.
-
! It felt a tad anticlimatic, but it felt sooooooooooo gooooood.Only Steven could use the power of friendship to stop a an eldritch war crime abomination to come to it's due.
And the watermelon people are some of the fiercest warriors I have ever seen, like, in five minutes they got catapults and air strikes.
Good stuff.
And I think we're not done with the cluster, but for now it won't be an apocalypse clock ticking to it's imminet demise. -
! Why exactly? Because the bubble will break if he's hurt? The other crystal gems have been critically hurt before and the bubbles they were storing the corrupted gems in didn't break.
! While Steven started the process, the Cluster bubbled itself so it should be able to drop one just as Steven can drop his shields. All it needs is a really good reason.
-
! Steven has the Voice of all things
! He's entered the conscienceness of Lapis, one of his Plant Soldiers, and Finally the cluster
! Had no idea what was happening at the time but I think he's got the ability to reach out to the remianing subconsiouses of the gem shards, and him forming that huge bubble was awesome as well
! The fight was also really entertaining, malachite is on sugilite's level and their attacks were awesome
! Nintendo 64 controlled blaster was fun tpo–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@DIO:
! >! the 2 parter felt abit anticlimactic
! i guess we will return to the cluster during this in too deep event or if Yellow Diamond attacks Earth during maybe the season finale! This will be the trigger for yellow diamond to know something's wrong. Things are really gonna ramp up at the end, im seeing it turn out like how Book Earth of ATLA turned out, things go from bad to worse and maybe the gems are captured and taken to homeworld for season 4
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Cyan:
! I can't believe Jasper is fucking dead.
! Can't wait to get Yellow Diamond's reaction when she learns that Steven defused her WMD with a pep talk.! I know SU isnt one piece but no way she is dead. What happens to her is a mystery but I think she'll either help YD later, or heel face turn later on, I have no idea which way they turn, because SU is lighthearted but she's also a little crazy like azula and she wasnt redeemed in the main series.
! Anyways I cant see her being dead, especially since she is a gem and she didnt fall in lava. -
! Can we just take a moment and applaud Peridot for so much growth? I know telling off YD was big, but she was very protective of Steven the whole second half. I couldn't help but grin ear to ear when I saw her reaction to Steven waking up from his pow wow with the Cluster.
! Also, can we be in the collective where Garnet purposefully let Jasper fall. I can see her internally acting like Willy Wonka…"no...stoo...come back..." -
! "Steven, are you ready to drill down to the planet, to depths never reached by your species to stop the cluster before it forms and save your world?"
"I don't know!"
"Don't say that! Say we're going to do it together and it's gonna be great"
"We gonna do it together and it's gonna be great!"
"LIAR"
! …
"and millions of lifeforms that matter far far less for me"
! Goddammit Peridot, you're awesome~
! "and millions of lifeforms that matter far far less for me"
! It's good to wake up to two new episodes, finally. -
Also what's the spoiler for last episode limit ( that isnt a limit but we hold ourselves to because we're decent people? ) 24 hours? 3 days? A week?
-
! Like people have been saying it was a bit anticlimactic. Kind of felt like Talk no Jutsu but I wouldn't expect anything more from a team of Peridot and Steven. After watching the gems struggle to defeat Malachite clearly there wasn't going to be a fight with the cluster. No now Lapis is a Crystal Gem and Jasper is waiting in the ground to pop up. If the cluster is made up of all the gems who died in the Gem war on earth, that is a lot of dead gems.
-
Not really that hyped with the newest episodes
! Even though I was never interested in the cluster plotline, like nobodyman, since so much time and episodes were invested on it I was hoping for something bigger or longer for its conclusion. I wasn't hoping for a big TTGL fight, neither, just something less quotidian. It was not bad, though, Peridot lines were gold and it had some funny and touching moments.
! And the first episode… almost all of it was watching the two giantess hitting each other. So... whatever.
! But above all else, where is my "Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl... and Steven (AND PERIDOT!!!)" opening? -
! It really feels like these two episodes should have aired months ago along with the Steven Bomb and been the season finale.
-
! Loved both episodes. The cluster may have been postponed, but in it's place we finally got Malachite's conclusion. Plus the scene with Steven talking to the gem shards was very well done. I thought the whole thing with befriending the enemy would get redundant, but it worked out.
! Peridot was great. I feel like this is the proper finale to her reformation arc. We got her turning point (calling YD a clod), but the following episode just consisted of her panicking and a bunch of flashbacks, never truly seeing what happened afterwards. So I'll agree with Black Leg, these episodes should've been the finale of season 2. It concludes Peridot's arc and Malachite's arc, and is far more satisfying than Log Date. -
Use spoiler tags for a couple days folks. Especially when its come back from a long break and people may not be aware there's new ones airing. People might jump in here thinking there's just an announcement or a music video or figures or something.
-
For those talking about how these episodes should have been the finale for Season Two or, on the other end of the spectrum, that they felt the episodes were underwhelming in some way or another, keep in mind that these weren't actually intended as season openers. Season Two was originally fifty-two episodes and was chopped in half to make Seasons Two and Three; so everything from Catch and Release through the latest episodes and probably the next eight or ten episodes after last night was intended to cover the middle of a single season.
-
Yeah. This is still technically season 2 for me
-
I thought the episodes were great, and totally thematically/tonally in line with best aspects of the show.
! As the series has gone on I've gained immense satisfaction from Stevens development into the least Offensively capable male lead of an adventure series I've ever seen. Dude has a shield, he protects people with it, and he talks. His secret weapon has always been empathy. He will invariably try to understand and befriend people, which may even help them understand and better themselves. Stevens optimism always leads to the biggest sucesses of the team, and in in times where xeno or homo or whatever phobia can persist, I can't help but love the show for its celebration of being an honest to god decent human being.
You say anticlimax I say Compassionticlimax! -
I like that outcome quite a bit. Was much better than a typical action show outcome.
And has been pointed out, this really wasn't paced to be a season end or start, so… pace wise there's a ways to go yet.
-

You say anticlimax I say Compassionticlimax!! Agreed, the fact that Steven is not only weaker offensively than the Crystal Gems (besides Peridot anyway) but also has no interest in changing that is a welcome change of pace. The cliche is that somebody wants to become a better fighter to protect people rather than just playing to their own strengths like Steven is doing.
! Well, so long as it doesn't turn out to be an actual power of his where he's actually unconsciously controlling people mentally rather than just befriending them by the strength of his own character. -
Season 3 Episode 2 tl;dr
!
-
! It's not mercy when you have no choice. I think.
! Yeah, Steven did something awesome, but it's not like he could have killed it anyways. -
! That's not the mindset of a True Pacifist!
-
Jersey is Jersey no matter what the Universe.
-
! Homeworld is a shitty shitty place, that's for certain.
-
I live in Jersey and I can attest that it is terrible
-
Oh, the cuteness! It's too much!
-
! Does anybody else feel like they've managed to accomplish more with Lapis and Peridot as characters in the relative handful of episodes that they've been in than with the other Gems in the entire series so far? I feel like I know Lapis better after this one episode than I do Amethyst, who has been around since the beginning.
-
! I disagree on that. Especially with Lapis. I still don't feel like there's enough to her, imo. I mean, we got a shred of history but her "now/present" is still pretty damned bland. Heck, I like Jasper better and we don't even know much about her. Still, Lapis could grow once she grows accustomed to Earth, I guess.
-
I live in Jersey and I can attest that it is terrible
Yeah they nailed it. Shadowy place is often how I describe Camden.
-
! I just like Lapis because she's cute as a friggin' button (plus, blue's my favorite character).
! If nothing else, this episode was a great foundation for her character. -
! I want to know the story behind the George Clinton Rasta Gem that trapped Lapis.
-
This miniseries event has been chock full of absolutely adorable shit. I love it.
-
! I love Lapis and Peridot so much! It's hard to choose who I like more: Peridot is funnier and lacks that melancholy side every other gem has, but Lapis got the best story and is one of the main reasons I started watching. And both of them interact great with Steven.
! Other than that it was a lovely episode. I love how this show isn't afraid to take it slow, and just let the viewer enjoy the atmosphere.By the way, can someone explain the deal with New Jersey? All I know is it's apparently the gateway to hell and nobody likes it.
-
Ian said it wasn't New Jersey, but a fictional place called Jersey. Infact, every location in the series is based off a combination of numerous places rather than a single location.

You say anticlimax I say Compassionticlimax!! Well Rose did have a sword. I like steven's compassion side a lot but definiteky feel there is room for him as a character to grow in seriousness without being a Sasuke type character, I mean his character is 14 so that's right on the edge of accepting more and more responsibilities. Agree with most of what you say but I still hope for a stevonnie with sword and shield vs big bad kind of fight.
-
Steven is a lot like Pikachu in how his design has become a cute little ball

well i feel like amethyst is a lot more complex of a character and the meaty stuff with her would probably happen later
-
! So do you guys think that's the end of the cluster? Seems more like a temp fix until something worse happens.
-
^(since this was about last week's ep, I assume it's safe to not use tags)
I honestly think the Cluster might end up serving as an ally for whatever Homeworld throws at Earth in the future because it seemed like it was able to do things without exactly forming. If anything, they may get a bit more guidance on what to do with themselves besides the drive to form. Like bubble the whole earth in a shield, idk?
-
I don't think the bubbles Gems' use to contain things are the same as the bubble shield Steven/Rose uses.
-
I know that, but it's still an inherent Gem ability. Was just throwing a wildcard example of it being some sort of superweapon without forming/destroying earth in the process.
-
The Crystal Gems get bigger
-
Like bubble the whole earth in a shield, idk?
That would only work if somebody pops up and asks "Why don't you just put the whole world in a bubble, Steven Universe?"
I guess Mr. Smiley would be the most appropriate all things considered.

! Is everyone aware that Episode 4 & 5 came out early? If so then…
! >! I enjoyed them. 5 was not what i was expecting given the episode title in english but it was still fun. I don't know how to feel about Lapis though. On the one-hand, episode 4 made me feel meh about her. I get that she went through a lot but she's not even trying even after Steven keeps telling her everything is fine. tbf it is probably her natural reaction given the circumstance but it bugged me. That said, her attitude in episode 5 was brilliant. The complete uncaring about the whole situation was great.
! As a side note Peridot was also great in both. I like this character development and I am glad they are all interacting with the main 4. I hope Lapis and Peridot get to stick around and not get removed in a few episodes. -
Yeah…weird...France I GUESS got the episodes early (and I think will be getting Episode 6 early as well). CN is just kinda derping around again? shrug
-
I feel so sorry for the SU crew.
-
At a guess, the original plan was probably that Cartoon Network was going to air those episodes as a Steven Bomb and switching towards more of a traditional schedule has put them behind. CN France just went ahead and showed them as planned which put them ahead of the United States.
I think Avatar was the first show that I can remember on any network where the scheduling was just bizarre but now it just seems to be the industry default.
Now it just seems to be the industry default. -

We should be getting the last ep of this set tonight, too. Spoiler for Barn Mates/Hit the Diamond:
! Oh my god, Hit the Diamond is one of the best eps yet! It makes me wish we got to see some of the actual humans playing, but this was a whole lot of fun. The last shot Sapphier-err… Sophie took reminded me of something out of FLCL, the flirting shenanigans were great and I can't neglect to mention the star player of the team: Bob. I'm liking how they've handled Lapis as a character. She's pretty disgruntled for some quite understandable reasons, but that doesn't stop her from still being within all that. The way she smirked and laughed "this plan sucks" was probably the best moment of the episode.
! Barn Mates was good, too (Camp Pining Hearts season 5 is trash!), but Hit the Diamond stole the show. I wonder if the next gem priority is going to be locating Jasper, considering Homeworld's search for her poses a danger to the team. I'm hoping this is where things head since I've been dying to see more of Jasper since her introduction. I'm really interested in what plans the story has for her. Maybe we'll get some talk of that next episode.
! I guess it is left to wonder what the next priority for the show is, since the Cluster and Malachite got solved (though the Cluster was a temporary stall). With Lapis's backstory, we got more of an idea about the gems on earth and I'd love to see those become relevant again. Homeworld's search for Jasper and the consequences of Peridot's betrayal are also big plot points for now, though the latter's probably got some time on it, since Yellow Diamond doesn't know about the Cluster's status. I think the logical progression would be Jasper search -> Rubies return, learn about Cluster -> Yellow Diamond gets aggressive. If that's the case, there might not be as much room as I thought. Still, it would be nice to see some regular gem adventurers featuring Bob and that angry slice of pie. -
Steven Floats is also out too.
! If the vibe of Steven Floats is any indication, we might be coming to a new wave of lighthearted Beach City episodes, which could be a nice welcome change of pace even though I also would have been up for a Lapis string of episodes. Then again, maybe they didn't want to repeat the Peridot storyline.
! Here's an interesting post on tumblr that hinted at this power was within Steven previously: http://pearl-likes-pi.tumblr.com/post/132886779114/okay-so-im-talking-in-this-post-about-one-of-the.
! That all said, Hit the Diamond was my favorite episode of the bunch.
