Chapter 816: "Dog Vs. Cat"
-
-
oh so that's why the monkey (who didn't turn out to be raizou) was using their samurai dialect.
thought it was weird but this twist never crossed my mind. -
We still don't know how Bariete fell. Don't tell me he is just an idiot.
-
Zou is going to become the first oficial turf for lufffy.
-
Atleast that explains why Jack was so sure they were there.
Makes him seem a little less insane, but just a little.

Elitist storytelling fanboys
I think Jabberwok is being hysterical and overblown and everything, but fuckin' lol at this here.
-
Who is the King of Liars now though? Usopp? Noland? All the minks? Morgan????
-
I don't want to pretend, that i knew that the Minks were hiding raizou, but i can't be the only one thinking the following :
All the time the straw hats were worried about the samurai, i was like 'the Minks never once showed hatred towards samurai from the wano Kingdom. Heck, they even said : we do not hate people we never met. So why are you straw hats acting all panicky?'
Maybe that's why i wasn't too shocked (that our me getting spoiled)
-
I second the notion of "don't forget to enjoy it for what it is". I want to know what would be a better outcome instead of what we got, would people not liking the chapter prefer the predictable route of the minks turning on the samurai and stalling the bigger picture with the yonkous and have several chapters of conflict resolution? Would they prefer Zou gets scrapped altogether and we bypass the arc and go straight into the nitty gritty tea party that lies ahead? Another cookie-cutter 'save the city/island from a tyrant' story? What would appease everyone I want to know :)

I was thinking the same thing. In spite of the situation the Minks never really showed signs of hating Samurai, so I just assumed that the Strawhats were overthinking things and that the Minks were never going to be as hostile as they predicted. Definately didn't expect this outcome though.

Same here, based on how they said early on that they judged people by their deeds and, far as we knew, the samurai hadn't done anything to them directly.
-
I've been sitting here thinking "What kind of conflict will occur on Zou?"
So if Jack doesn't come back to Zou(that's a big if) then maybe the full-moon plot will develop the conflict. How are these night minks affected by the full-moon? Well we've seen how likable Nekomamushi is; just what if his personality completely flips exactly like a character who becomes a werewolf. WEREMINKS.
As for Raizou, I would assume he's either A)Hiding in plain sight or B) Inside the Whale Tree where we speculate a poneglyph to be.
Just a thought though.

A Brilliant twist, shame about the break next week but an early chapter was a welcome surprise.
-
This was being build up since the first chapter of Zou. Go back and read the previous chapters. Everything is consistent.
Of course it is consistent. That the least it should be. But since it is based mainly on plot convenience and unsubtle deceiving of the the reader, i don’t find it that great.
-
Ok, the chapter was great and I actually cried when I saw that spread. But there is one thing I don't get, I will read the past posts to see if it was discussed already, but, how does Bariete behavior makes sense now? He refused to tell the samurais about Raizou and said it would be "trouble" there were samurai in Zou.
Other minor things that bothered me were Momonosuke being locked down in a room for days and suddenly deciding to go on a walk exactly when the other samurais were there. And, worst, being able to find them magically during a casual walk.
But I guess these points can be explained when we find out the nature of his indisposition. -

and said it would be "trouble" there were samurai in Zou.
Mangastream mistranslated it. It's just "big news" in the Viz version.
-
Now that I think about it, maybe it does make sense.
For all we know, someone threw Bariette down from Zou while the SH were climbing. It means someone attacked attacked him on the day before, someone who had just arrived. Zou was invaded again (maybe Jack came back) and Bariette was thrown down before he could warn the other minks. This could explain why his behavior regarding the samurai is unlike the others, he knows the samurai are still in danger (but still, why wouldn't he warn Kinemon and Kanjurou then?).
EDIT:
@Galaxy:Mangastream mistranslated it. It's just "big news" in the Viz version.
So one problem is solved.

it wouldn't make much sense for whatever new invader to just wait an entire day before making his presence known, especially if someone as dangerous as jack
also, jack has just been beaten by tsuru, sengoku e fujitora..no way he is already ready for combat…even luffy took several days to recover from the fight with doffy
p.s. and also..bariete would be an idiot to not announce an invasion first, and then welcome the samurai.
-

Luffy took 3 days to recover and to leave Dressrosa.
Jack attacked the convoy seven days ago. That's plenty of time to rest and heal up in this series.

What if there is a traitor among the minkmen? And what if Bariete saw this traitor in the midst of something? Who knows what actually happened until it's revealed.

Still we have the fact someone attacked Bariette one day ago. Unless he fell from Zou on his own, something I think is highly unlikely.

Since this chapter showed how loyal the minkmen are. How devastating would it be for one of them to be a traitor?
-
Ohhh, you Oda !!! How did you manage to put a twist on this like that ? I just want you to act on The Sanji Chronicles, and
now you gave another Major Plot for us to be excited about ? Damn you !! Keeping us on our toes every timeMomo feasting on Nami's chest; Nami , Franky and Usoop's crying panels; Luffy's anticipation of a second feast prior to the
reveal. Nice touch Oda. I love this Chapter -
wow great chapter
see mink die for keeping friend safe is awesome

I don't really get the plot convenience aspect.
It's like you think it would be natural for the minks to tell the Straw Hats, a group with no apparent relation to the Samurai, about Raizou even though they're willing to sacrifice their well-being to keep it a secret.
I mean, it's not uncommon for even the bestest of friends to hide secrets from the other, especially if the secret doesn't involve them in anyway.
I give you that Momo finding Kin'emon before anyone else is sketchy, but that's just inconsequential in the end.

But I guess these points can be explained when we find out the nature of his indisposition.Didn't Momo hear the bells like everybody else? He was not the only one who mobilized after hearing it, the entire island did. If he followed the jingle, he would cross paths with Kin'emon in the end.
Don't know how he managed to find them before anyone though.
Cool, but unlikely answer: Momo has CoO.

i still think that sengoku, tsuru and fujitora are not enemies you can fight and then recover at full health in a week….
also, the last report jack got is that the samurai is NOT on zhou, why would he come back?@ArmamentHero:What if there is a traitor among the minkmen? And what if Bariete saw this traitor in the midst of something? Who knows what actually happened until it's revealed.
bariete would be an idiot not to point him out the second he is back on the..ehm..back..makes no sense for him to announce the samurais and forgot that a freaking traitor is amongst them and he knows who he/she is…
same if he was attacked,he would point that out..there are no strangers other than the strawhats on the island at the moment.@.access:

i think it's more unlikely that he got attacked and didn't mention to it the moment he was back than the possibility that he is just a stupid character that heard voices from the sea, tried to see who they were and fell
also,if he was attacked he would have wounds..and for the little we saw him since he is back he doesn't seem to be wounded at all.

also, the last report jack got is that the samurai is NOT on zhou, why would he come back?
Because Jack is stubborn, and would've stayed on the island and continued to torture the Minks if Doflamingo hadn't been defeated. He still wasn't convinced by the Minks after 5 days of fighting and torture that Raizou wasn't there. And now we have a good reason as to why, since Raizou is there.

Chapters like these are why we One Piece.

Yesssss!!! Got my weekly fix before surgery! I can go happily now lol its interesting to see the sacrifice between the minks towards samurai. Now, this makes me think that Wano and Zou are connected!!! What if they were allied with the AK, and keep their secrets, history, etc for them???
-
Okay, so the final bombshell I'd like to prepare people for, in case it happens, is that Raizou is a female that dresses like a male because female warriors are frowned upon in Wano so has to keep it discreet. I no longer think she's a mink because she's directly of the kougetsu clan and if she were a mink she would have informed her samurai friends about Zou and the inhabitants, this chapter the two numbskulls spoke as if they had very tiny information on the mink tribe. So I retract my statement after a re-read. But has Raizou ever been referred to as a HE?
Theres also the idea that had they heard about it, and knew it was a place they were supposed to go but Law's dumb repeats of stereotypes or whatever, caused them to doubt it so in this chapter they were asking are these minks Really the same as the human haters, so its sounds like they were skeptics of what they heard, because they were supposed to rendezous at zou in the first place.
-
shocking chapter ….but back to the main issue "sanji rescue" how oda is gonna play it out ? will the mink would be part of this ? and where the heck is Raizou ?! I mean with "the dog king" telling Jack I myself gonna help U search for him a cross the country... is he even in Zou ?
-
I had a feeling that this was how things were going to turn out but, as usual with One Piece, it's more about the ride than the destination. I can't wait for Kaido's guys to get what's coming to them.
-
It took me a while, but I just realized the people in W7 are thinking Franky became the robot on the poster, that's why they are so nervous.
-
Beautiful goddamn chapter.

Minks + Samurai buddy up with the Strawhats to pay Kaidou a visit?

You're right I can see where you're coming from, he was pretty confident in addressing the mink leaders too, despite the Strawhats trying to restrain him, as if his arrival was an expected one. So yeah, could still be the case, I feel like if she were a mink they wouldn't really be questioning the mink race though, she being a companion of theirs and all I'm sure they get along just fine. I don't know anymore but I'm going to play it safe and say she isn't for time being. A female mink and a fishman would spice things up in the crew and we already have the latter all but confirmed.
-
And I thought snitches got stitches. Man, love the minks.
-
That being said, so far who are people's top 5 Minkmen? Mine goes like this:
- Nekomamushi - hilarious and beastly
- Carrot - quirky and adorable, says funny things and her design is cute.
- Wanda - endearing and gave Chopper his first stiffy (wait, was it her?)
- Inuarashi - Just as strong and commanding as Neko but not as funny.
- Pedro/Sicilian - cool designs, Pedro doesn't know what personal space is lol.
(I've excluded the pirate minks like Bepo and Pekoms intentionally)
-
I'm happy that Kinemon is just a reatiner of the big bosses of Wano. Otherwise it would be difficult to me to understand how could they resist all that harrasment. So that Kougetsu family must be really something.
Thank you i feel less alone. When i think to all the plot convenience which were needed for this to happen…
And you make me remember we indeed have this corpse thing not long ago.
At least minks are great characters. Hopefully we will learn about Raizou and the link between Wano and Zou (unless it is delayed for whatever reason again)While I was readin gthe chapter I was thinking, "I don't see why the big fuss because the samurais arrived, after all they didn't torture anybody there. It would be stupid to blame them for it." (that's the only forced point that I remember now). But when I read the page when the minks bow to the samourai I felt eased of that feeling, and on the contrary the minks appeared to me like great characters. It was nice reading. I agree with the last line you wrote above, only that it's not an "at least " to me. The good part was prominent to me.
Atleast that explains why Jack was so sure they were there.
Makes him seem a little less insane, but just a little.
True… just a little, tho.

Old habit. When I am plowing through the new postings, I really don't want to reread previous stuff, just have the quotes there for context. I can adapt if it is too injurious to your wa (和).

That's hard on Law, since it was Kanjurou who introduced the information. From cnet's translation:
"Kanjuurou: Hey! I have heard that Zou is home to a race who are not friendly to outsiders…
Law: Yes, that’s the Mink Tribe. "Kanjurou heard about a tribe of human-hating individuals, but he thought they were another race who also lived there, not the minks themselves. Law just said the race of those rumors were exactly the minks.
-
Best chapter of the arc by far. I was ready for a twist but more so on Jack's front. This surprise is more than welcome though. More than ever, I'm anticipating where the story will go from here.
-
Zou is fine with the samurai… Meaning there is no clinflict between them?
So what now will Luffy take his leave to go after Sanji or will Jack reappear?
If Luffy goes what about the rest? Will they stay at Zou or go to Wano?
It'd be nice to see Zoro lead an expedition in Luffy's absence, no? We still have to see if he'll pull another post-Enies Lobby after him and Luffy talk about Sanji's resignation.
-
…......well that was a bit of a let down. :(
I was under the impression that it was gonna be more intense but I guess I shouldn't expect too much.
