It's not like the World government comes across as the most noble and caring of governments. With all governments, self-preservation is the most important concern. Hence the rampant cover-ups and the assault on Enies Lobby which probably doesn't warrant complete destruction.
Chapter 422 "Rob Lucci" Discussion
-
-
edit: I just noticed that Zoro is the only one who doesn't look happy on the color spread.
Also, it looks like he is about to come in last place. heh
-
Thanks for the chapter and the trans :D
So, Lucci has a chapter named after him. Just like Franky and the other SHs….interesting :)
-
Wow, that Admiral is an asshole.
Marine: Captain, we can't destroy that ship, our fellow soldiers are on it.
Admiral: Shut up! (pulls out a gun a destroys the desentor.)It seems like the higher ups in the World Government don't care about their soilders. (Wouldn't it be interesting if T-Bone saw an admiral treating his allies like that?)
edit: I just noticed that Zoro is the only one who doesn't look happy on the color spread.
Just like how Don Krieg shot out one of his man. Pirates are not the only one to do so, even marine admirals do that.
-
I'm happy about this chapter, and I've not even seen it yet! Just the spoiler and translation were enough, because:
1- Lucci is not just a henchman anymore. He is the #1 assassin. The big killer. He is still not the "boss" of the arc, but he has become something of legends now, the kind of name you fear. Once he was just a strong guy. Now he is the strongest of all assassins. Very good.
2- As I predicted, Lucci is not down. And better yet, this mean that both Gear 2 and Gear 3 were not enough. Thus, Oda has broken one of the most powerful cliches in the shonen manga universe: "that jutsu that I learn in this arc will kill the boss of this arc". One of the bad things about Sanji's and ZOro's fights was the fact that, once they used their "out-of-nowhere" Jutsu, the fight was over in less than one chapter. But Luffy could not defeat Lucci with just his "jutsus", so this already makes his future victory even sweeter, since he will need to use ability, cleverness and varied techiniques to win, not just a super move.
3- An entire Buster Call ship being raped by Luffy and Lucci is a pretty cool scene. I hope the other SH's help in destroying the remaining ships. I am still hoping that Sanji and Zoro fight some VA's, so that they need more than just their "ultimate jutsus" to win.
-
Once again, another awesome chapter. Thanks Battle Franky and murasaki for translation.
Chapter is way better than the spoiler. I like how Luffy remains "fat" while in Gear 3. I wonder if this tires him out as well, or if he can remain this way indefinitely… wonders if there'll be any reverting to gear 2.
i like the background on Lucci. i'm glad to know that the WG has this much faith in his ruthless abilities. man, when this is finally over, i can't wait to see the expressions on the WG's faces
-

I like the sound of that. Perhaps giving more reason to the others "out-of-nowhere" (as so many claim) moves? =p

This post is deleted!

The mystique around Rob Lucci seems very similar to the mystique that was around Zoro in the beginning of the story, him being the bloodthirsty Pirate Hunter and all.
Awesome chapter! The scene at the end makes me almost wanna give my left arm to see the next chapter ><

Been lurking around these forums for awhile, so I thought I'd finally make a post. Thanks BF for the Scans.
This chapter's been bothering the hell outa me though. Anyone else feel like the whole Gear 3 thing (its strengths and its weaknesses) is getting a little too similar to the problems SSJ2 had during the Cell Saga in DBZ?
Lucci's line that while in Gear 3, "Your power increases, but your speed drops," is almost exactly the same as Cell saying, "You're stronger than me in that form, but I'm still faster."
Get stronger with SSJ2 to increase its speed and use the power increase. Utilize gear 3 better to increase its speed and use the power increase. Too similar for my tastes, so I'm hoping Oda does something different.
I am trying to give Oda the benefit of the doubt here since I have been enjoying this arc.
Gear 3 seems almost completely useless to me. Luffy doesn't have an easy time hitting Lucci with his normal attacks, so why bother wasting a ton of energy just to easily miss and leave himself open. Maybe if he uses Gear 2 to stun Lucci and Gear 3 to finish him in the combo it might actually become effective. I just hope Oda doesn't have Luffy pull some ridiculous Gear 3 power up outa nowhere.

i never got into dbz, but that's not the way i see the move either. i just see it as a way luffy get's stronger, but it costs him some speed. that's not just been used in dbz, it's been used just about everywhere. and it's logical, so i have no problems with it.

scanlation's up, enjoy (i'm not posting any megaupload/whatever links, just the thread, this is legit right?)
-
@HTC:
I don't know if this has been suggested or not but … what if the BC becomes a Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine, like when Luffy was fighting Zoro @ Whiskey Peek?
Status aside, judging from all the damage one ship took, that doesn't seem likely. That ship took 2 gear 3 attacks, maybe something from Lucci, and still it was cannonfire that took it down.

Sorry, just had to respond to this. I for one am still a lover of DBZ, that show set the bar for other shows, and at the time of it's popularity, that show was the bomb.
There were actually no drawbacks to SSJ2. You are refering to when Trunks was fighting Perfect Cell. Trunks did not achieve SSJ2, he just gained a ton of power and became all bulky and slow, and pretty much useless, and Cell mopped the floor w/ him. When Gohan attained actually SSJ2, well, everyone knows what happened then
One Piece is still a shounen manga, and as cleverly as Oda camouflages this fact, if you break it down, the characters have to get stronger (how they do it, is up to the author). even kenshin had to go back and finish his training
Luffy hasn't proven he's stronger than Lucci even with Gear 3. I'm pretty happy that Lucci wasn't KO'ed after 421. I was hoping Lucci would be a tough cookie to crap and it seems to be shaping up this way. to me, Lucci is the 1st opponent that actually rivals and maybe even tops Luffy in terms of raw physical power, and i can't wait to see how oda will have Luffy overcome this challenge. i'm excited!!!

But please don't forget, that the fights in One Piece are a few levels more complex than those of DBZ. In DBZ the outcome of a fight was always just a simple math problem of calculating strength (and speed), but in One Piece there are many more factors that can determine the outcome, like strategies, weapons/tools, luck and of course conviction. Also Luffy doesn't need to be faster than Lucci to beat him. It's enough to catch him and tie him up like in chapter 421 p12 or in chapter 39 when he defeated Kuro with his bell.

I mentioned that a couple pages back. I like the way Oda drew comparisons between the two.
What powers do we think these admirals have? I'm looking forward to finding out…
-
wow dude, so much is happening… Zoro and the gang are drowning, Luffy's in big trouble and who knows of Nico Robin and Franky O_O! and the BUSTER CALL... man this is really getting exciting, suck that we have to wait two weeks for another.
Either way, thanks for the scans, BF.

I love it how the Gears are simply different styles of fighting, rather then evolutions of eachother like Dragonball or Naruto or whatever.
Gear 3 is also completely redonkulous, and I love Oda for it.
-
Well, I dunno, but I dont really like Gear 3. Dont kill me for this, but I just think that it looks pretty silly and random. I know that this is OP, and Luffy is silly and random, but I think that it kind of detracts from the seriousness from the fight, when a fat leg is attacking Lucchi. And I am not a fan of the way Luffy looks when he has a buffed up chest. Once again, this is just my opinion. But, this chapter was AWESOME! It made me about 20 times more interested in whats going to happen.
-
Your opinion sucks. It's awesome BECAUSE it's silly and random.
Too much dramatic tension is lame.
-
You know, it's incredible how Luffy knows these techniques to manipulate his body. I'll bet he knows how to fool a lie detector and how to control specific organs like those celebrities do.
-
The thing I like about this character is that it gives Lucci some status. He is known among the marines as a "somebody" and when he is defeated it'll be another "somebody" that Luffy will have defeated. It adds to Lucci's character, but better yet, will add to Luffy's fame when he is done beating him.
I think that is the only purpose of the flashback :)
-
What I don't get is the CP9 isn't even supposed to exist, and every fucking Marine recruit knows about him.
-
Thank you very much Battle Franky and you to Murasaki.
Excellent chapter this week.
The fights shaping out nicely.
The second VA is pretty twisted. I wonder how the others will be.2- As I predicted, Lucci is not down. And better yet, this mean that both Gear 2 and Gear 3 were not enough. I loved this chapter the fight on the BC is what I expected. It's also great seeing Lucci's background expanded a bit. I hope we get the names of the VAs soon.
-
I agree. The arc is escalating in spectacular fashion by creating so many desperate situations. I am not that concerned with Lucci's character, but it's nice they added a bit of depth to his character. What I'm really hoping is that Spandam is killed off in a horrible fashion. Even though I know it's unlikely, it'd still be nice to see. As for Lucci, I hope he doesn't become a member of the crew. He'd just feel out of place to me.
-
What I don't get is the CP9 isn't even supposed to exist, and every fucking Marine recruit knows about him.
It is true that too many people seem to know who the CP9 are. Altough I think it is more like the general population doesn't/shouldn't know about them. But if you are in the army, even if you are just a simple soldier, you will hear rumors about them.
-
Woohoo, this chapter renewed my interest in Lucci
Thanks BF and everyone else who hosted and translated and stuff. What I don't get is the CP9 isn't even supposed to exist, and every fucking Marine recruit knows about him.
I always figured there's a difference between what the public knows and what government agents know. I have a cousin in the Navy, and there's a lot of stuff he knows that he is not allowed to talk about.
-
Honestly, the difference in knowledge between a grunt in the navy and someone who keeps up with the news is minimal, and in fact if the grunt doesn't keep up, then the well informed civilian often knows a lot more about current events.
They don't tell grunts anything they don't need to know, so I assume your cousin is pretty high up in the navy, should he really have access to a significant amount of classified information.
I really expect that the marines in buster call ships would be informed about cp9, especially considering the fact that they are bombarding the island while that group is on it, seems like they'd 'need to know'. Though it's pretty obvious that the grunts really don't know much, it was a captain who identified Rob Lucci and a vice admiral who explained why they weren't blowing up Nico Robin, not a couple of privates.
-
a stong dirct hit gear 3 who finsh look how bad lucchi conditon is plus he was in zoan form for a while
i think he is a related to a elder star -
I wonder if the Elder Stars know the CP9 techniques. Afterall, somebody had to teach them to CP9. I could picture at least one of the Elder Stars having these techniques.

One Piece
Volume 36 : The 9th Justice
Chapter 339
RumorsFranky: Huh?! Then you think that official Corgy did it?!
Nah, he's not suited to assassination!!Cocoro: Nah, not him.
Theshe dark deedsh are the work 'a CP9…!! You know them, Blueno?!Blueno: I've heard the rumors…
Franky: ...ugh, stupid smallfolk... I can't believe you really take
those rumors of a nonexistant entity seriously.Cocoro: Oh, no... it exists... they jusht don't show themshelves.
They're an "assassination squad" that movesh in darknesh.Franky: ...you sound confident about that... where's your proof?
Cocoro: I heard it from someone. (burp)
Franky: SEE, IT'S A RUMOR!
Cocoro: That's what's shcary! They're only "rumor," but people shtill dishappear all the time.
You don't shtand a chance if they come fer ya.If the CP9 are not suppose to exist and olny marines know about, then how did Kokoro knows about the CP9?
-
@joekido:
If the CP9 are not suppose to exist and olny marines know about, then how did Kokoro knows about the CP9?
Probably from her experiences with Spandam's CP5. Oh yeah, and she did some bridgework at Enies Lobby once. I dunno, she seems more informed then some people, despite being a drunk.
-
I wonder if the Elder Stars know the CP9 techniques. Afterall, somebody had to teach them to CP9. I could picture at least one of the Elder Stars having these techniques.
What the hell? They are bunch of old freaking men that govern it. Where the hell do people pull this stuff from.. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Most likely former CP9 members supervised their training or they have specific training. Or maybe Kumadori does it because he is very old and could've been in CP9 for al ong time.
-
No one takes drunk old women seriously.
Thanks to Battle Franky for the scan.
-
What the hell? They are bunch of old freaking men that govern it. Where the hell do people pull this stuff from.. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Firstly, get off my d***. I was only asking a simple question. Secondly, just because they are old men doesn't mean they don't know how to fight. You should never judge a book by its cover.
-
What the hell? They are bunch of old freaking men that govern it. Where the hell do people pull this stuff from.. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Really? I have read alot more stupid comments then heard, but alas that is just me and my mood of not caring anymore.
The thing that people like you must remember is that at one point in time, these old men were actually young guys. So they could of made the techniques then passed them onto lesser/coming up members. Old people have great knowledge, when they remember that knowledge though.
-
Apparently someone missed the fact this is a shonen manga, and that in shonen mangas and more generally in japanese pop culture old men can kick copious amounts of ass.
-

That too, well really alot of old people can kick ass. Look at chuck norris who is around 60.
Yes I said Chuck Norris.
-
Heihachi is the prime example of a badass old-guy who refuses to die. But I asked the question because the Elder Stars looked like seriously powerful group of old-guys. I mean they must know something.
-

They looked like old guys. Some of them could be former CP9 members, but I don't think that they invented 6-forms and then taught it to CP9. That's bull
-
I don't think that they invented 6-forms and then taught it to CP9. That's bull
Right, what did I say? Old people have great wisdom, and they were young once. So, yea they probably could of invented the techniques, BUT until Oda actually says who made the techniques. We could be doing this pathetic dance of words all night, or day depending on where you are located at.
-
um.. maybe Luffy will use geppou to escape the explosion. He saw Lucci do it.
-
Yeah that's what I thought too, he's already figured how to perform Soru, so why not Geppou. And hopefully they'd both use it to land on the bridge of hesitation to finish the fight.
-
You know, maybe Luffy does have a gear 4 to beat Lucci. In how many other ways can Luffy manipulate the rubber in his body? Maybe he'll condense his rubber to form a tekkai copy move, or maybe chibi Luffy has a secret weapon?
Edit: You know, maybe this backstory for Lucci is foreshadowing that he'll do something similar again. He killed 500 hostages to ruin some pirates plans, maybe he'll try to kill Robin to ruin Luffy's plans.
-
Yeah that's what I thought too, he's already figured how to perform Soru, so why not Geppou. And hopefully they'd both use it to land on the bridge of hesitation to finish the fight.
Even if Luffy could use geppou, which there is no hint towards, I doubt he could pull it off while using gear 3. A huge, cumbersome body doesn't bode well to aerodynamics.
But, then again, he managed to gomu gomu no rocket himself over well enough, so who knows?
-
People are saying ever recruits knows of CP9, but that's not true. The first VA had to explain it for his crew, and the marines on the ship that Lucci landed on deffinitly didn't recognize him so maybe their captain just told them too.
And besides, the crew of a VA during a buster call is hardly a normal recruit.
And the rest, rumors are rumors, if we find out Area 51 really does exist will people be saying "Everyone and their brother knew that"? No, because they are rumors, they only heard 5th hand stories about it.
-
WHAT?!?!?! Area 51 is just a rumour?????
I want my money back! -
No….Area 51 is real. What goes on in there is a rumor.
