@RomanceDawn:
I hardly think it's an insanely stupid idea. It's like how many Gamecube games got pushed forward on the Wii because the game cube barely gave those games a chance to sell. Pretty much the same games were brought over with some new play control scheme. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Pikmin 1 and 2 along with Mario Tennis are what come to mind. To a lesser extent Twilight Princess as well.
I don't really know what you're getting at. Those ports came out years after their release and at least ~two years or so after the Wii was released. We're talking about porting a "complete" edition of Smash with extra characters, stages, etc. within ~2-3 years of the previous iteration's release
I never said that making ports was stupid, but a port of Smash with a few extra characters being the only smash game we're getting because nintendo decided to put resources towards a port instead of the actual game? That's crazy talk.
People don't have to buy in but judging by the sales of the Wii U I bet there are tons of gamers out there who would get into a complete edition just based on buying hardware that they viewed as having a future. And so far judging by Smash specific sites I think many people would happily move forward, especially the competitive scene.
Again, it's p much a complete "fuck off" to players who A) bought either version (especially both versions) and B) bought the DLC packs. (see below) And, as I've suggested and Yopi also pointed out, the hype train for an enhanced port is… pretty sucky.
Even with Wii U sales in consideration,
And why exactly do you think the competitive scene would prefer an NX version? Best I've heard is more enthusiasm for melee HD (LOL), but "moving forward" as you say would mean actually doing a generational jump.
Shucks, a huge amount of the competitive scene is still running off of gamecubes, and people seem fine with the Wii U version. What exactly makes you think that an enhanced port is enticing to them to purchase an NX?
Development for Smash 3DS and Wii U is continuing as we debate this.
Source? Besides patches I guess but that's not really a laborious development process at this point, and I feel that Bayo/Corrin are probably just getting ready to be finalized if anything, but no "true" development for the games are really going on, especially if Team Sora is basically done.
Even if Nintendo wanted a brand new Smash for the NX platforms within a few years that means the games need to start development the moment this last bit of DLC is done. I believe it makes much more sense to take everything they've done so far and just put it in one compete package with a few new things. Otherwise all that effort doesn't get to see it's full sales potential.
I think you're looking at it purely from a revenue drive as opposed to actual profit. Because while I can agree that more characters is a more enticing product, I highly disagree with the notion that the income outweighs the actual cost and resources input into making it.
- All stages
- All DLC
- All modes
- Enhanced graphics
- Enhanced online
- Cut veterans like Wolf, Ivysaur, Squirtle and Ice Climbers
- Maybe even a few new characters to really sell this to those who have already double dipped. I mean thats what really pushes Smash forward. Only this game though, not 3DS or Wii U.
- This would be the game that would get future patches and DLC stages and/or characters. 3DU'S patches would end shortly after Corrin and Bayo.
Yeaaah no. The game's out. It's been out. It'll have been out for 2 years if it releases Q4 2016 looking at your speculation, and I don't think anyone who dropped cash on the Wii U version and its DLC characters is going to be too happy about purchasing a "new game" and then still needing to purchase more DLC.
If this is really a thing and they want to sell the NX, new content has to be made for this version.
So in other words, a new game basically. Because I sure don't see Wolf and ICs alone being enough for most players, especially when Wolf is, at first glance, a variation of fox with adjustments to make him a semi-clone in terms of his moveset.
Heck I'm pretty sure most people who don't play competitively even like the ice climbers all that much.
And like I said, fighting game fans are conditioned to complete additions and such. It's hardly a middle finger to anyone. It's like when Resident Evil 4 was announced for playstation 2 when it was stated that it would remain gamecube exclusive. Those who have it early get to enjoy it now and if they so desire they can purchase the game of the year addition some time down the line.
Yeah but I don't need to buy a new system if I want to transition from SF4 to USF4. And sure, the system exclusivity of RE4 isn't great, but let's not pretend that same generation ports are the same as future generational products.
USF4: $20
Ultra Smash 4: $360
Waaaay larger of a gap for what would essentially be DLC for a game that just came out two years ago. There will be people who naturally follow the Nintendo line and upgrade accordingly, but it will not be just for Smash 4 Complete.
Edit:
Oh and Amiibo. What better excuse to relaunch a bunch of the popular Amiibo that don't need to be created from scratch than a "new" Smash to go along with it? If this is just an enhanced port of both games combined I feel like Amiibo would be one of the driving forces for brand new characters as well.
The Smash Amiibo on the shelf right now would essentially be future proofed and not locked down to the Wii U and 3DS versions.
I don't see why the amiibo would necessarily be locked down to the Wii U and 3DS versions, and although it's a good excuse for more of a cash grab
Again, way too optimistic in terms of thinking "Hey look if they put in all this effort into making 1/5 of a new game, they could make so much more money!"

Boy I sure felt great buying Smash 3DS and Wii U. Can't wait to purchase a third version of the same game in a timespan of three years and also a new console just to play as eskimo kids!
