! I wanted the spiders to finaly show up, Zombie horses are so last season.

! By far the best episode of the season. This was intensely enjoyable and it kept surprising you. When the draugr invaded I thought the episode would end, but I got 10 minutes of some of the best carnage I've seen in a long time. I was a little sorely vexed by the hot female chieftain dying, but Thormund and the giant along with John made it out of there and to see John's sword shattering a white walker was so freaking epic.
! As for the rest of the episode, Sansa finally getting outburst for her anguish was satisfying, to see Ramsay thinking he can take down Stannis made me squeal with happiness. The one true king will certainly see Ramsay's head on a spike. But the conversations between Tyrion and Daenerys has been something I've been craving since the first season. Absolutely brilliant. I am foreseeing plenty of fanfiction dedicated to the couple being written in the tons for the rest of the year. Nonetheless, to think we still have two more episodes makes me feel like a child on christmas. -
Alice Allen is just so good.
-
! The show is handling the actual main plot soooo much better than the books it's not even funny.

[hide]Don't say that to the book fans or they will go White Walker on you.[/hide]

Well the show has the benefit of hindsight and actual limitations on how long it can be. There's no way it could go on for 26 years.
-
! Right before Jon retrieved his sword I asked my dad (who had read the books) if Valyrian steel was shattered by the Walkers, he did not know. My theory is that maybe Valyrian steel is made with bits of obsidian inside of it or something.
-
@Cyan:
! The show is handling the actual main plot soooo much better than the books it's not even funny.
What do you mean by the main plot?
Because I'm pretty sure just having a big battle with the White Walkers doesn't mean they handled the rest of the Wall stuff better. -
So, one good big action scene clears away all shitty decisions?
At least we aren't in true "beyond the books" territory.
-
Dorne still exist even though we were spared it this week.
-
Olly is so getting a wildling tsundere girlfriend. Or maybe he will be the tsundere
Lord of brocken bones made my day. And Jon is amazing as always !
I hope no one got hurt in the making of this episode. The chaos felt so real. -
It's easy to have something superficially exciting happen at the expense of logic. Like how conveniently the White Walkers showed up with Jon's party. Or why arrows are working on zombies. Or why one random White Walker is bothering after stragglers. And the number of times, the Walker could have just cut Jon down instead of pulling him up or hitting him with his sword hilt. Also where did that Valaryian sword conveniently pop up from? Also the directing of that battle was just shitty, fucking shakey cam made it impossible to tell what was going on.
-
Awfully convenient that the White Walkers attacked the Fist of the First Men where the Night's Watch just so happened to be staying. Awfully convenient that wights are apparently fucking everywhere and apparently not 200 feet from the Wall. The White Walkers are magical ice demons, really not outside the realm of reason to suggest that they can hone in on prey/future cannon fodder.
The arrows didn't seem to be doing much in the long run, just knocking wights down (and then getting back up.)
Oh, and the White Walkers have been very blatantly toying with everyone they run into (see also: that Royce guy from the first chapter, the Thenn that bought Jon some time.) Up until Jon used Longclaw, they haven't faced anything that can reliably kill them.
@TLC:
Also where did that Valaryian sword conveniently pop up from?
You mean that Valyrian sword that Jon's been carrying around everywhere since season 1? The sword that Jon got as a gift? The sword that was blatantly featured in the PREVIOUSLY ON segment? The sword that Jon's seen dropping when the fight with the White Walker begins?
That sword?
-
Dude, instead of when they do this crap with an 1v1 (see the hound's trial, Tyrion's trial and the mighty morphing sand snakes battle) is a mess, in an all out brawl the shaky cam works, because an all out brawk IS a mess. Honestly I can't stand that shit, makes me dizzy, this time I was ok though.
And what about that sword, you mean the sword that he has been carying since season one? The one given to him by Lord Commander Mormont? The one that he has been keeping at his side for 5 books, and all the seasons? How convenient.
The culling of Hardhome also happened in the books (in throughly different circumstances and participants) but the jist of it is the same, they were attracted by the boats, hit hard and is a tragedy.
Also, when you are ussed to castle forged steel shatering in your skin, you are usualy more careless and can have the time to play with your food, or on the other hand he could have been examining him for any profetic sign or something, or he found Jon pretty and wanted to include ANOTHER rape scene in the series.
The bar hasn't been set high, but best chapter of the season.

Show does have hindsight of editing in its favor.
And a lot of people agree book 5 kinda sucked in that it was mostly just a reeeeally long prologue for book 6. It was very slow, and very little happened. It got all the pieces into place for the start of the next book, lots of travelling and training sequences… stuff that was originally going to just be done in a time skip, and for a good reason. Which... is where the show is now.
So we'll see.
Still waiting for Stoneheart though. Who should have appeared a year ago but may be cut entirely... and if so, thats at least one book thread that will be totally different on the show.
-
I'd be seeing the problem with Stoneheart being cut if she actually did anything beyond background stuff yet.
Considering where Brienne's plot is going…

I agree…Lady Stoneheart is a cool character because of who she is (was...), but honestly she's been nothing but background until now...and the fact that she hasn't been inculded in the show kind of tells me that she's not gonna do a lot more...

! I got a little confused on the God of Many Faces part. Like, I couldn't really separate fact from fiction but I guess it was supposed to be like that since Arya was forging another identity/becoming someone else. All I got out of it was that she's going to assassinate someone bad now. Good enough. Glad her training is progressing. The other trainee seems jealous. Why? I don't know. Maybe she feels Arya caught the eye of their master as the favored student. She has been here for years while this new girl shows up and starts taking leaps and bounds where she had to patiently study and work her way up to before she could even walk.
! The rest of the episode I really enjoyed. Always enjoyed what was going on in Dany's part of the world and Tyrion showing up makes it that much better. Great action sequence at the end. Can't wait for Cercei to get out and reign terror on all that opposed her. Honestly, I don't even like Cercei's character but she's far more entertaining than this religious uprising. -

I'm just dissapointed that the nature of the show means we won't spend 6 years thinking
! that Arya is blind
Cause you know, it was really anticlimactic for that to just sort of be fixed almost immediately after such a long wait. TV audiences don't know what they're missing with THAT particular thread.

Given who the character is, and that two other major character storylines should intersect with almost imediatley in book 6, its pretty clear they're going to be important to the overall story in some way… regardless of the fact that book 6 isn't written yet. Mostly I think it shows that in spite of what Martin has told them of the masterplan, they have little idea what to do with that plot.... or it wasn't worth maintaining a big actor paycheck for a year for a what is, yes, currently a background bit.
Or that they just had to do a filler season with Sansa and Brienne first and we'll be getting back to the canon story on that front shortly. Ir a major deviation.
Or I suppose Martin is doing even more of his playing against expectations and that won't come up again till book 7 and he told them so, so it really will remain a background point that reqiuires no follow up for a while.
! would like to know what word Brienne yelled though.
-
@Cyan:

! I'm just banking on their situation devolving into a fight and Arya ends up killing her with the sword she hid in the rocks. Then the Faceless Man pops out of the mist having watched their entire fight in secret and tells Arya she passed the final test.
! Because you know, he's a creeper like that.–- Update From New Post Merge ---

ahahahahaha
George's writing speed creates more tension and drama than the actual writing.

! I thought it was obvious it was 'sword'.
! Unless Brienne figured out how to fit 'I AM SEARCHING FOR A HIGHBORN GIRL OF 13 YEARS WITH AUBURN HAIR' into a single word. -

Beats me. But he cliffhangered on that like, 2/3 of the way into book 4. I kept waiting to get another chapter of that POV but no.
I'll grant that Martin at the time thought he was almost done with book 5 and it'd take a year instead of six… but thats still a weird ass place to stop.
@Cyan:
! I thought it was obvious it was 'sword'.
That seems the general consensus, but it never occurred to me at the time. What, 10 years ago now? Will be at least 12 by the time the next book comes out?
-
A lot of plots in book 4 end at weird places, and then get resolved in book 5 ridiculously fast.
Honestly, he may have been better off just keeping Feast and Dance the same book.
-
So, one good big action scene clears away all shitty decisions?
At least we aren't in true "beyond the books" territory.
So we can't praise an episode because the seasons has been kinda lame?
-
If you think of them as the same book the pacing doesn't seem odd. But him writing it and the wait between sort make dividing it the best option.
-
Well, again, at the time 4 was being published, he actually said in that book, that 5 was almost done and would be done in a year… and I'm sure he believed it.
I have to assume he would have paced and ended the cliffhangers in book 4 differently if he'd had any legiitmate inkling it was going to take that long. (Stupid Dany's plot) He even said here and there that originally stuff like Arya and Cersei and Brienne weren't going to be in 5 at all, but since it HAD ended up being so long, he really needed to address some of the cliffhangers.
And, even if he HAD been done with writing it at the time, it still would have been split since it was a 3000 page manuscript... the divide probably just would have been cleaner, and maybe some of the filler like Tyrion's endless road trip removed..
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
If you think of them as the same book the pacing doesn't seem odd. But him writing it and the wait between sort make dividing it the best option.
Even as "the same book" the pacing IS still odd, because you go for 800-1500 pages without seeing some of the characters. Now you can follow an online checklist and alternate books in some fashion, but that wasn't an option at the time, and is a pain in the ass..
And even still theres a bunch of stuff that was supposed to be there that's been shoved to the start of book 6.
-
Turns out the way to solve the Meereenese Knot was to completely excise that goddamn Griff plot.
Sure George the plot makes thematic sense but jesus is it really contrived and raises way too many questions.
-
Yeah… book 5 of 7 is a little late to introduce a supposed main character/possible final winner. Especially if its mostly just padding to fill out the timeskip.
If it was Romance of the Three Kingdoms, sure, but that actually spans decades.
Also, for all the shit Martin gets for his delays... it really is super normal for books of the size and scale and complexity of what he's doing. Even the prolific guys take 2 or 3 years to do 1000 page novels... even if they are cranking out other material along the way.
When the hell does Kingkiller Chronicles book 3 come out. Its been like 5 years.
-
Yeah… book 5 of 7 is a little late to introduce a supposed main character/possible final winner. Especially if its mostly just padding to fill out the timeskip.
I've seen it suggested that the reveal would be more palatable if most of Tyrion's Essos adventure was in book 4, but that still doesn't fix how absolutely insane book!Varys's scheme is.
kind of?Book spoilers
! I'm also convinced that the narrative purpose of Young Griff was to prepare us for when George stops beating around the bush and comes clean with the truth about Jon.
-
Its hard to tell if the show cut these things because they know they aren't actually important, because they have so little book material to build a baseline on, or because they just don't want to have to spend time on even more plotlines in the last two seasons… (something pallateable in a book series but no so much a tv show).... or all of the above.
They already combined Sansa, Reek and Brienne's three arcs together, and maybe Stannis'. So who the hell knows.
-
Brienne gives me this Harry Mason vibe - Kudos if you get the reference
-
About Jon killing the whitewalker using Longclaw,
Theory time! kinda book spoiler (though still a theory also at this point lol):
! Is it really because Longclaw is made of valyrian steel? Maybe it's a foreshadowing that Jon Snow is the one (AA) and not Stannis.

Link MIGHT contain some things about the book, but I just want to site the reference.
edit: double checked, no real book spoilers, just Q&A with the fans, year 2002-2003. -
So Liam Cunningham and whatever the dude who plays Pod is named, said episode ten would break the internet and be more shocking than the red wedding. D&D also said that the last scene of the season would be a book scene. Now let the theories begin.
-
If it is book then it's obvious. Go discuss it in the book thread.

Maybe you should read my post though. The last scene is a book scene. Whatever happens on the last episode is still up for discussion as we all know that the books have been bypassed in many storylines. So what will it be? I`d go for something stannis related.
-
The last episode is titled Mother's Mercy. Think about it.
Predictions w/ heavy spoilers:
! Jon gets Caesared. LS shows up, maybe for Theon? That alone should be enough to shock people.
! Probably scenes at King's Landing post Walk of Shame, Braavos with Arya poisoning a dude and maybe getting a new face, and something in Essos/Meereen for the aftermath of Daznak's Pit. Maybe Vary pops up to kill Kevan and Pycelle too. And Jon sends Sam and Gilly south to Oldtown for maester training. -
Cersei's(or Marjorie's) death coupled with the walkers breaking to the wall?
-

Referring to this? He is Davos Seaworth in the show
http://winteriscoming.net/2015/04/15/liam-cunningham-hints-at-season-5-scene-more-shocking-than-red-wedding/ (Spoilers present but indicated accordingly)
Judging by his reaction and the current situation, it would be something related to Stannis and his side of the story. Something to the level of Red Wedding's brutality would be Stannis sacrificing his kid for victory of some sorts
-
^
Based on the title: Mother's Mercy, that would be my guess considering how it is foreshadowed. Unless…there is like...a super surprise character wink or something. Probably Cersei is going to be big in this episode as well....as a mother. -
The high sparrow talked about mothers mercy as what happens when you confess your crimes in the eyes of the faith. In the episode he captured Cersei , so there's that.
-
anyone else found it wierd that the white walkers didnt just freeze the water? it seems they can freeze rocks
-
That was my exact thought. They should have atleast been able to make an ice path to John's boat. Unless the white walker's powers are bullshit and Gekko Moriah's in the north pulling the strings.
-
Why bother freezing the water when you have a showboat that big?
-
When were you under the impression that they can't just swim?
-
arnt all zombies bad against seesalt?
-
Pretty sure they'd all sink
