@Galaxy:
A small bit of Season 5 is shown starting at 0:30.
I like how they've been focusing only on Jon and Tyrion's upcoming stories.
It's like they're fully aware of how the quality of those plots holds up compared to the rest of books 4 and 5.

Wyman Manderly>>>Those two posers.

Longer trailer here
BOOK SPOILERS BELOW
! So…. RIP Aegon? No greyjoys this season? I was really looking forward to seeing the kingsmoot on screen. And they best not be cutting Manderly

Problem with books 4 and 5 is all they did was set up and end on cliffhangers and we've been waiting for their resolutions for so long. I hope season 5 doesn't give us any book spoilers and just sorta drifts off into it's own canon :/

Get ready for today's episode of Family Feud!
The Boltons:
VS
The Starks:
-
Ramsay looks like he needs to take a shit real bad.
Good to see that Fat Walda's sticking around. She's a fun Frey.
-
Well, I pre-ordered my copy of Season 4 from Best buy. I went with the house Martell special packaging. They also have house Tyrell this year too. If Best Buy somehow screws up my pre-order, I'm gonna flip out.
-
-
I'm not sure I caught any explanation as to how both units in two different countries can share a single episode director. That seems like it would be a tremendous headache and lack a personal touch in half of the scenes.
-
Goddamn Dorne is gonna be beautiful.
And hell yeah, time for the High Sparrow to wreck some shit.
-
-
Goddamn I can't wait for Bronn and Jaime's Dorne adventures. Seems like a much better angle than the books'.
-
Oh good lord Daenerys please cross the ocean already! I can't take anymore of her "I'm gonna kill them all" talk.
Other than that, good trailer :)
-
Order of excitement: Jon > Stannis > Cersei > Arya > Jaime > Daenerys > Tyrion > Sansa > Brienne
The Tyrion, Sansa, and Brienne storylines don't look that interesting to me, but Tyrion gets out on top for being Tyrion. I have no idea where they're planning to take Brienne and Podrick.
-

Well, since the way I view the Seven Kingdoms is that it's inhabited by douchebags, douchy sons of douchebags, bitchy daughters of douchbags, and handful of likable characters, I can't wait till khaleesi brings her army of not-slaves to steamroll them all.
Of course the biggest worry isn't what's going to happen, but rather, that GRRM doesn't die of obesity before actually finishing the last two books.
-
I think the most hilarious part of Daenerys coming over is the possibility she comes over after Westeros has mostly stabilized and has a decent ruler.
-
I dunno mate, Tywin and Tyrion Lannister were the only two characters I can think of that had any possibility of stabilizing the land, albeit on a completely opposite ends of a vector.
One is dead and the other is cast away, I can't think of any decent "king" left in Westeros.
Stannis? Hah. What a joke.
If Tyrion is going to be joining Daenerys like I suspect, it pretty much cements her as the ONLY character worthy of ruling Westeros left.As for the "ice" of the song, Snow, I have no idea how his role is going to become equally important.
-
I meant more of Tommen with the Tyrells mainly holding power with Tywin out of the picture. Most of the awful stuff came from: Joffrey, Ironborn, war in the north and riverlands. Now I guess it would mainly be the Boltons in the north with Ramsay holding a large amount of power. I mean…as far as overthrowing the throne, I doubt anyone's going to cheer on Daenerys having Tommen and Margaery executed.
-
Emperor Tommen I Baratheon, King of the First Men, Rhoynar, and the Andals, Lord of the Free Cities of Essos, High Khal of the Dothraki Khalasars, King of New Ghis, Shadow King of Asshai-by-the-Shadows, Breaker of Chains, Slayer of Dragons, Owner of Ser Pounce
-
Obviously, the ideal choice would be for Stannis to legitimatize his bastard child with Mel as heir and king.

The shadow baby?
-
@Cyan:
The shadow baby?
Who better than whats-his-name-shadow-baby?
-
It's really interesting (sad) that with all the battles and wars the North had to retake King's Landing, the Tyrell's took it over with two well placed assassinations.
-
Better the Tyrells than the Lannisters.
-
Yeah. We'll get plenty of Cersei(Lannisters) vs Margaery(Tyrells) for the King's Landing storyline this season.
-
I want to edit all of Cersei's scenes this season to have a laugh track.
-
Light Season 5 spoilers below!
!
-
! Didn't Jon Snow mention I think back in season 3 how the wildlings gathered together and attacked the wall seven other times or so?
-
kinda spoilerish
! According to Instagram, Arya and Theon won't appear in the first ep. Also someone's supposed to die in it.

So the showrunners have official confirmed that the show will in fact spoil the ending of the books. Some stuff will be different of course, but the main plots will be finished before Martin finishes the last books. I personally have no problem with it, actually it's quite the opposite, cause I started the show first and won't read the books until it is finished. And the books are still different enough to have a different experience even knowing what will happen for me later on when I finally read them. And I'm just glad that they won't try to come up with their own ending for the show.
-
Yeah, I'm honestly fine with it too.
An original ending probably just wouldn't have been as good as whatever Martin has planned, so I'm glad they've chosen that route.
Someday I'll read the books and get to see the different "how" it reached the conclusion.
-
Just to understand this correctly:
So Martin will tell the TV-producerk, how he wants to end the mainstory lines? -
Yep, that is correct.^^
-
I've been a fan of asoiaf for 2-3 years, but I'm seriously peeved about this.
-
I think this is bullshit but not surprised it happened. I think it really sucks that after years of us waiting patiently for GRRM to finish his books, all we get is "Sorry, couldn't do it in time, just go somewhere else for the rest."
The original source material should always be the number one priority and it's just ridiculous that we're getting primary information from a second hand source.
-
There was no goddamn way he was going to release 3 books in the span of 7 years/seasons.
-
At first I was irritated but then I remembered I started off watching the show anyway. Then I switched to the books after season 1. So having the show give away the ending isn't really a huge deal because the books are amazing in their own way. They already have way more characters than the show and go into a lot more detail. It's not like I'm not going to read the books when the come out and knowing the ending won't diminish their quality or my enjoyment. I'm sure that any big moments in the book will get the attention and budget they deserve in the show. It's a great move for the show as well because it should keep them from going too far off the rails with the story. We could have ended up with something like FMA(2003) when what we really would have wanted was FMA: Brotherhood.
-
Wow, that's kind of disappointing, especially for book readers that's not watching the show (if there's anyone). Though I both read and watch GoT, getting the ending first from the show makes it.. less appealing, I guess. Though I hope I'm wrong.
-
@Cyan:

Book 5 was done pretty much when the the show started.
And, having gotten past his writer's block with Dany's plotline (supposedly) and a solid idea of the ending, he COULD have started moving quicker and kept just ahead of the production. Taking only 2 or 3 years on a book of that size and scope isn't unheard of. (It was only two years between book s 1 and 2, then 2 and 3 for instance, and Wheel of Time was regularly on that schedule.) It was certainly always feasible he'd at least be done with book 6 before the show got to that point, and then that would buy him another two years to maybe get the last one in before it was done… or at least have the book 6 material done.
At THIS point yeah, he was clearly not going to finish in time.
@Uncanny:
Wow, that's kind of disappointing, especially for book readers that's not watching the show (if there's anyone).
That would be me. I stopped after season 2 cause it wasn't doing anything for me. And I'd been reading the books since book 3 was new.

That's not whats happening though? He isn't saying "I give up on the books". Its just the show will get there first.
I mean hell, it happens in anime all the time. It'll be like the first Full Metal Alchemist series or the Trigun anime. (Of which only maybe 6 episodes of 26 were actually based on the manga.) The main point might be the same, but the road and execution are likely going to be vaaaastly different. especially if the show picks random characters to kill off, or Martin changes some things after the show does it one way. Even if overlapping characters die, theres a vast difference between say, if Jaimie is eaten by a dragon or if he's stabbed by Tyrion.
And really, be honest. Assuming he lives long enough to fnish the series, the books are going to be around for forever. Don't we want them to be the product he wants, rather than a rushed mess done in a hurry to match the media production? Look how that messed up Harry Potter. Heck, even book 5 suffered from clearly being finished just to get it done and out.
-
So pretty much same destination, but different roads?
Makes sense, he's pulling the TV version of Full Metal Alchemist, just more intune the books ending.
Not a big fan of the series, waiting until it is mostly over before I get into it (long wait I know).
-

There's a big difference between that and an anime which is an anime does its own original content. The anime can try and guess what the manga is going to do but at the end of the day, it's own thing, it's own product. The Trigun anime is vastly different from the manga. Full Metal Alchemist has a vastly different ending to Brotherhood which is more based on the manga. Here, the author is telling the production team important plot points that will be exactly like the book, the journey will be different but the key beats will be there. Namely how Jon is a Targaryen and how he will marry Daenerys and become the new King and Queen with Tyrion as the new Hand of Lord of Casterly Rock. And it's just bullshit that we're going to get that primary information from a second hand source first.
I know he's not giving up, I'm pissed it took him so long and things have gotten to this point and don't feel it needed to. Like you told Cyan, the Mereneese knot had long been undone, why did it take him another 6 years to write opposed to 3? Why did he take so long to do book 6? Is it another writer's block or is it him just taking it easy and say, fuck it I'm gonna take it easy, they can watch the show for the rest until I'm done? Because it'd be really shitty if it were the latter. The fact that he skipped this year's SDC to continue writing the books reeks of a stunt forced on him by the studio to me because it'd look bad for the comany image along with the announcement. I didn't see him skip the other years. Has he just become HBO's puppet at this point?
And I NEVER bitched about him taking so long before because like you said, I don't want a rushed product. But now that my waiting is going to be rewarded with a bunch of fuckwits (note, not saying all TV show watchers are fuckwits I'm a TV show watcher, just anyone who uses this logic to spoiler a book reader is a fuckwit) going HURR HURR THE SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT NOW MOTHERFUCKER DID YOU KNOW HOW DANY, TYRION AND JON SNOW HAD AN AWESOME SEX ORGY!!! It's just bullshit. If any book reader spoils a TV show watcher maliciously, he's an asshole. But it is how it is that the book readers were privy to important information first because it's the original source material. We were first in line. We were the ones that generated enough interest in the books to get a TV show adaptation made and this is how we're rewarded? And this isn't about fan superiority, it's about common courtesy. Original source material should always be king, it should always be the number one priority. That's why I started with the books. Based on that principal because I felt it would be superior product and have the most craft and care and that it'd be the first place to get new information. It was the harder and more staisfying path for me. But apparently spening hundreds of euro and almost a year of straight reading meant nothing in the end. And no one give me "Just don't watch the show" lip like it'd be impossible to avoid spoilers. Look how much Red Wedding has permeated popculture.
And if you ask what can be done, well nothing can be done now can there? Those ships have long sailed. It's just really shitty after years of fans going "What are we going to do when we catch up?", we were constantly given a "Don't worry about it" and now we're here and we get "Well this is how we're going to screw you, I know we hate to do this, we wish we saw it coming…"
And that's not even getting into the elephant of the room which is the show has been getting progressively worse each season and the story is now in the hands of the makers who, even WITH the source material at hand, filmed a rape scene and didn't even know it. Really good hands there.
Blegh, this sucks.

And yet you've already sussed out these facts and conclusions based on the material already provided.
If the ending ends up being exactly those beats, and those details, that the fandom has already put together? But the execution (of character X) is different? What's it matter?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@TLC:
Like you told Cyan, the Mereneese knot had long been undone, why did it take him another 6 years to write opposed to 3? Why did he take so long to do book 6?
Maybe unlike books 4 and 5 he wants it to actually be good again.
Or when you have 50 different characters running around sequence of events just makes things harder to work out properly.
Is it another writer's block or is it him just taking it easy and say, fuck it I'm gonna take it easy, they can watch the show for the rest until I'm done?
Well, he's been on a promotional tour pretty much nonstop because of the show. I'd imagine he actually isn't getting as much time to write as we'd think.
Because it'd be really shitty if it were the latter. The fact that he skipped this year's SDC to continue writing the books reeks of a stunt forced on him by the studio to me because it'd look bad for the comany image along with the announcement.
Or maybe he's been doing nonstop promotion and its gotten in the way of his writing, so him going to yet another con, however big, actually is a bad thing.
The show presumably hoped he'd get through book 6 sooner so they could follow that and do it for 2 seasons. And I'm sure the hope then had been he'd get 7 done, or at least a lot of it, to coincide with filming and then have the book release when the last season aired.
It didn't happen. So they take plan B. Make it up based on an outline. WOuld you prefer they make it up completelty nad go wholly different directions?
In any event, "yes we'll spoil the books" might just be a marketing stunt in and of itself. "Hey, getting impatient? Tune in, we have the answers NOW" even if they aren't the actual final book answers.
-
The show already looks to be solving 4 and 5's problems by cutting a bunch of really annoying and sort of really stupid plotlines.
Of course the Dorne plot (and terrible characters associated) is still there but hey it's being used as a vehicle for Bronn and Jaime to go on a bonding adventure.
-
Wait what, without spoiling anything, but bronn and jaime will team up? Nah, don't really tell me anything, but that would be really interesting.^^
-
Just to understand this correctly:
So Martin will tell the TV-producerk, how he wants to end the mainstory lines? The tv writers already KNOW the ending. He told them it a long time ago.

Wow. When did Sesame Street get so high budget? And dark?
They did not have skits like this when I was growing up.

This is both amazing and offensively cheesey at the same time.
-
It was all inside jokes… would kids even find it entertaining? XD
-
I assume its there to work on two levels. Wacky Grover for the kids, inside jokes for the parents.
-
Wow. When did Sesame Street get so high budget? And dark?

During the 70's and 80's they did parodies like this one already so it's not the first time
