A yr and a half with ray san on basics of haki, what did he do for six months? After learning basics it sems battle is best way to improve usage of haki. But what about his fruit? Its telling that he now comfortably and effortlessly do gear second. Now without the fatique. But if he don't go all out no need to improve upon his best. Ceasear, hody, don chinjao, luffy never really looked like losing, he was dominating, doffy is different his best shown so far brings no benefit to him so now he has to push in more effort. Of course what you said is probable, just in my opinion unseemly.
Ps i think luffy every punch might be equivalent or greater than kings punch.
Hm, my car has Gear 6.
Hoping OP doesn't last long enough to need it.
Or not.
I'm not sure.
I don't think Luffy will have a Gear 6.
Luffy was in serious need of a new "power-up" or how i like to call it, ability.
Doflamingo has been outmatching Luffy with brute force. There aren't many opponents that can actually do this.
I believe there will be Gear Primo (First) anyhow..
I'd say for further on in the series, it will be Luffy figuring out his opponents with his skill set and increasing his power now that gear 4 has been introduced.
The gears don't necessarily have to boost him in power like super saiyan, it just gives Luffy a new skillset that he can use to adjust to opponents and fighting styles.
Luffy has shown good mastery over his 2nd-3rd switches. If Luffy were to have 4, he could switch constantly in a fight to beat his opponents.

I wanna agree with you.
Luffy generally gets influenced by things around him and creates a move of some sort similar to what he likes. Starting from even arlong arc till now it has been the case. Even gear 2 was influenced by CP9's way (not sure about Gear 3's influence). Just wondering if the vibrations related theories that many had posted could somehow be influenced by his brief time with Whitebeard? Or probably someone can think of some characters or stuff which Luffy seemed to show interest over which could serve as a potential possibility for Gear 4

he's been out matched by his speed, but doffy can take a hit Forsure.

I can imagine Luffy like he'd be if he had a ton of coffee and jittering like crazy making him super fast, attacking with the jitteriness (not a word sorry) while the jitteriness caues vibrations on hits. That's all i can think of

Dofla was talking to Luffy and then Luffy just chucked an Eagle Bazooka.
Luffy can hit fast, but Doflamingo has been dodging attacks quite well.
Although I'd say that Luffy has gotten Doffy with fast hits, but Dofla has outmatched Luffy's defensive speed. Doflamingo wounding up right behind him. It may not seem like much, but that's HUGE, especially after Luffys 2 years training.

I make up too many.
Would you like to unleash the beast?
Gear fourth is gonna be very destructive.
Meh, he has Gear Third for pure destruction where speed isn't as much of an issue.
It seems like Gear Fourth will raise the power of his attacks but without reducing his speed.

Offensive Luffy is not bad in speed
Defensively Luffy is lacking speed.
@DHL:

His defensive speed is actually pretty decent imo, he dodges most of Doffy's dangerous attacks. If anything it's specifically his Gear 3rd's offensive speed that is lacking, missing Doffy and opening himself up for a counter attack like in the last chapter.
@DHL:

Meh, he's dodged enough of Doffy's attacks to make it clear that he can be fast enough defensively if he reacts quickly enough.
It's in the instances where he was putting it all on the line with things like Gear Third that he left himself vulnerable.
I had a thought that he might incorporate Bellamy's "Spring" effect by spiraling his limbs for more power by bending himself that way, in honor of Bellamy– a sort of fitting way to finish Doflamingo, who refused to acknowledge Bellamy.
But for Luffy to, in the few minutes since Bellamy's "death", come up with that and to be sure he can use that as an entire "gear", is pretty silly (and it'd be too coincidental if he'd come up with it before).
CrazyMerlyn told me to post my idea from another thread.
http://www.wired.com/2012/08/do-rubb…-like-springs/
Rubber can have spring like qualities in following Hooke's Law until you stretch it too fast, hold the stretch, or try to stretch the rubber band again after stretching it once already I gathered from skimming this article.
After effects of the gears:
Gear 2 had Luffy extremely fatigued and hungry.
Gear 3 had Luffy shrink into a weak chibi form of himself.
Gear 4? Maybe Luffy will be super stretched and flimsy. I think that would fit rubber trying to be a spring.

Gear 2 and 3 concentrate on two different aspects of Luffy. I will compare Luffy to a automobile since he is like a race car.
Gear 2 is blinding speed from faster blood circulation from his heart. Gas or Engine
Gear 3 is destructive power from expansion of bone. Tires
The gears don't seem to be intertwined. Can Luffy use both at the same time? That would solve his speed and power issues. If he can't which I gather he would have done already then why not? Something is missing...a link to use the two together. Enter Gear 4.
So what part of the body could help him that he hasn't modified using gears? I can think of some ideas: muscles, skin, stomach, brain, and lungs.
Muscles: Seems to be the focus here. This selection is probably too easy. Maybe for another gear. Pistons
Skin: Luffy can stretch further than his normal limits...which I don't know what they are. Unlikely in my eyes. Exterior
Stomach: Make him a mindless beast who needs to eat. Instincts kick in for a better fighter. Funny but nah. Gas tank
My two favorites below.
Brain: Change the elasticity and plasticity of his brain making him smarter and letting his body use gears together. Driver
Lungs: Both gears use air/oxygen. Up his maximum oxygen intake and disperse it faster in his blood, bones, brain, etc. Fuel

He did use both at the same time back on Thriller Bark. When it was the absolute final moment in the fight against Moria, he was already in Gear 2 and he inflated himself into Gear 3 and became a giant ball. Chopper said that it would tear him up from the inside. If he found a way to get both together like that without seriously damaging himself, that would be great. But I think that he really will have a combination of both for this new gear.
So how is he going to get air in his brain?
Each gear was inspired from Luffy's experiences from traveling.
Gear 2: Soru
Gear 3: Giants…probably...they were at Enies Lobby
Gear 4: Well what has Luffy experienced enemy trouble wise since the timeskip?
Steroid Hody Jones: Luffy had trouble fighting Hody underwater and was saved by Fukaboshi.
Ceasar Clown: Luffy was suffocated being careless.
Don Chinjao: Didn't really need to push his limits.
Bellamy: Spring attack got Luffy good though I think Luffy let Bellamy hit him...mostly.
Donquixote Doflamingo: None of his current arsenal is seriously hurting DD. Luffy has the speed and power but not together.
So that is why I like it to be his lungs. More oxygen means more stamina. It also means more oxygen for blood in Gear 2 and air for bones in Gear 3. If this support connection is made it would increase Luffy to monstrous levels. Problem is can JUST his lungs be used without the other gears in his moves? Probably be a mix of high stamina where he can do moves longer and push the technique.
@Cyan:
Gear 4 is achieved by a pirate taking in the energy of five other pirates with pure hearts.
Pirates who are currently fetuses can be used.
Saw it yesterday…oh God whYYY???
So how is he going to get air in his brain?
I don't think he is going to put oxygen in his brain. I was thinking change the actual brain shape to benefit his fight because he is elastic.
I think once we see G4 we could actually think of G5, I mean, if G4 ends up being shit then we will be more like praying for Oda to never show a G5.
Hmm I wonder when Oda thought of Gear 4th ? Maybe it was before haki :ninja:
Everyone seems to be talking about it being either speed or power, but what if it's neither of those things? It could be more of a status effect type thing, like with Doflamingo, it's not his speed or power per se, it's the incredibly versatile and wide-reaching nature of his strings. Ace (now Sabo) could burn things in a way that would be effective in a way beyond pure power, like burning up some armour or all of the oxygen in a room. I'd like it if it was more of a utility thing, like you see with DFs like Magellan's, Mr 3's and Doflamingo's, to name just a few examples.
I was also thinking about what his inspiration would be, since he took Gear 2nd from Soru and Gear 3rd seems to have been inspired by the giants (it's funny re-reading Little Garden now and seeing Luffy repeatedly state "They're so… huge!" and maybe the idea is simmering away in his meat-obsessed brain even then) and one thing that occurred to me was Trebol. Luffy becomes liquid rubber. Now, I don't actually think this is that likely because the Gears before were very considered things after some time had passed, this would be something he only just thought of - but then again, that's not really out of character for Luffy. So perhaps he becomes a kind of liquid rubber and can flow around unpredictably, and even smother Doflamingo's mouth and nose? Or in a quite dark turn that I don't think fits Luffy, even flow inside his body and undo what the strings are repairing?
It addresses a couple of things - why did Luffy wait till now to use it (he's only just thought of it) and why did he want Law to be moved far away before he used it (he can't control it very well). Again, I wouldn't bet on this at all, but it'd certainly step outside the "speed or power" selection, which is something I hope Oda does rather than making G2 or G3 redundant in some way, or simply making a fusion of them.
GT is one giant piece of filler crap and NON canon.
Why so bothered?
Enjoy the shit!
Love that sig of Violet, btw.

How would Luffy even move in liguid form? Would he change into a logia? Personally I don't think it's a utility thing, since his gears are moves that enhance his attacks in a certain way (hence the name gear 2nd etc). If it would be a utility thing, it wouldn't be much different than say Gomu Gomu no Fusen or Gomu Gomu no Boh.
Gear 4 will be stronger than gear 2 and faster than gear 3.
Luffy's gears need to be balanced out so none of them will become irrelevant.
sure gear 4 got to be diffrent from gear 2 and 3 or there wont be no need of gear 2 and 3
I still say it's either completely haki related, using haki hardening and his rubber powers for some realy cool weird technique, Conquerors haki related, or worst case scenario he has some will of D bloodline inheritance form thing that roger had in the past that rayleigh taught him to use
I still say it's either completely haki related, using haki hardening and his rubber powers for some realy cool weird technique, Conquerors haki related, or worst case scenario he has some will of D bloodline inheritance form thing that roger had in the past that rayleigh taught him to use
I don't particularly think it has anything to do with the will of D bloodline but mentioning Rayleigh…yeah, I can see it being something that Rayleigh gave him idea or even taught him how to use. What if it has something to do with the conqueror's haki? Maybe some ultra power spike using that which combines all three types of haki? I don't know how that would work, but it would be cool to see.
I think Gears 2 and 3 are already incorporating Haki. That's why he doesn't turn small anymore and can summon Gear 2 freely and quickly with his arms and legs for just one attack. I think Gear 4 won't be something as simple as "2+3+haki".
Maybe it'll have something to do with his muscles since that's his best chance at achieving speed and power. People normally build muscle by lifting weights, causing them to tear apart, rebuild, and grow stronger. Maybe Luffy's found a way to tear apart his muscles but since he's rubber the damage is less severe, at least right away, and he still gets a huge strength and speed boost. It would also give him a unique look, just like Gears 2 and 3. Gear 2 has red, shiny skin and steam. Gear 3 has giant appendages. Gear 4 would be an incredibly ripped, bigger, and bad-ass looking Luffy. Think Nightmare Luffy but maybe not as big and without blue skin.
So how is he going to get air in his brain?
Poor luffy that headache, that increased intracranial pressure, and herniation well he's rubber everything will just snap back in place if anything. Gear four is….. muscles and rubberband theory is the two i like best.
Here are two of my personal takes on it: Since gear second is all speed with not enough power, and gear third is all power without speed obviously gear fourth will be the gear that provides speed and power at the same time. However, this gear won't perfectly correct the flaws in G2 and G3, because if that were the case, Luffy would have no use for either of those in the future. Based on this, I have two theories:
1. Since we see Luffy put his mouth near his forearm, it is possible that he will bite into it and blow, inflating it (similar to G3). He will do this to both of his forearms, leaving two (not extremely large) inflated spheres where his forearms are. This will cause the impact of Luffy's punches to be more packed with power, even while he is still able to move quickly.
2. Since Luffy's red hawk in an earlier chapter did a decent amount of damage to Doffy, it is possible that he will make his entire body engulfed in flames, as opposed to just his arm.
Making his muscles/cells into springs inspired by Bellamy to gain extra power. Deserving end for mingo.
I would love to unleash the beast.
Meh, he's dodged enough of Doffy's attacks to make it clear that he can be fast enough defensively if he reacts quickly enough.

It's sorta been 50/50.
Flamingo was talking with Luffy and Luffy just pulled an eagle bazooka. Whearas when he was more attentive, he countered it along with break white after Hawk gattling.
Luffy after the eagle bazooka was getting comboed. Hit by overheat, Flamingo from behind. After the grizzly magnum Dofla was already at Luffys head.
Yes gear third could make him slow, but the travel from Luffys extension was big. Luffy has shown he can withdraw his attacks and switch quickly. This time he just got done.
So in few days we will see gear fourth making Luffy a beast.
I am very interested in seeing it on paper, on spoiler scans/ pictures.
Cleaned scans take away a lot from impression that some awesome panel give. I have hard time deciding if I will look into spoilers next week or not..
I want gear 4th to be something that I will really want to see again and be excited to see again. I also expect something like Gomu Gomu no Gauss Gun(if there is gauss gun in One Piece world) - something like almost unblockable piercing attack being possible only while using gear 4th.
I would like to see Luffy a bit more buff with strings of his muscles being easily visible.
As for effect of gear fourth being used I think that it would be very cool if Oda would go against our expectations and thanks to G4th usage Luffy would turn into living reject dial - gathering power from enemys attacks(to some extent of course) and then relasing that shock back at enemy.
So every attack landing on Luffy would boost his counter attack.
Luffys rubber body would also be far more durable when it comes to shoulder/ body damage that for example Wiper gotten when he used Reject Dial.
This kind of power would be also along lines of powers suited for man made out of rubber.
Okaay, its sunday, just a lil bit more, I'm still with Hassouken based gear, Luffy saw it, Luffy fought it, Luffy learn it!

Gear 4th seems like something Luffy learned and perfected during timeskip.
Its not like it was during Ennies Lobby when he picked up Soru - perhaps he will work something out based on what he seen/ fought against during Dressrosa but he didnt yet shown fruits of his training to the fullest so I guess its not time to be showing off tricks that he learned during this arc.

Well I must agree that Sanji needs more powaaah, he's been doing pretty bad lately I just can't think of anything better for G4 I guess. So far the whole coliseum thing was only to create an abomination; a blonde ace, and also to hype Barto and Cabbage not even Becca who was more important for the plot got anything from there, so if G4 could be based on something Luffy saw at the Coliseum I would go for the Hassouken.
I don't think Sanji will learn Rankyaku, as he has sky walk if he needs to cover distance. It would be funny though in gag purposes with Zoro.
