Gear 4th

@krillin (sorry, i thought i clicked reply with quote)
this is something i can see happening.
oda used to draw luffy with very defined musculature in his arms and the rest of his body, not just his abs, early on in the series during major fights or attacks. he stopped and we haven't seen harldy any instances of oda artistically detailing this about him.
Actually, it's the opposite. Luffy at the start was pretty much a noodle man. Nowadays, his musculature is more defined even outside fights.
It's just that he now wears more covering clothes.
-
he was noodly outside fights. inside, oda added quite a bit of machismo artistically. he eased up on that fast.
now, odas style is simply more streamlined, so it's really difficult to compare. oda still, even after the timeskip, decides to draw luffy very goofy and noodly a lot of the time, but still holds back on the big bulgy panels he used to do. i'll have to find some examples for the thread.
another reason though, that oda probably doesn't, is because many of the huge finishers involve stretching with his fruit, and it's probably pointless to try to draw musculature along an elongated, made up anatomy.

A couple more gears, Luffy, and you'll be all set.
You telling me?
My whole life i had a dream of a proper manual LuffyMobil.Soon i'll be able to drive one at proper speeds: (just 2 to go)
i.e.

I'd say baka is neutral and chibi is reverse
Good Point!
might even make a new model, or could leave it to more talented people with similar mad MS paint skillz. But, you haven't seen the GT-h model… (LuffyMobil : Grand Tourer - haki)
-
A-The Darkened Skin from Vulcanizing(G2+Armament+?)
B-Inflated Muscle Mass(G3, to a lesser extent so that it doesn't compromise speed ) -
A couple more gears, Luffy, and you'll be all set.
Gear Neutral confirmed.

SPOOOOOIIILERRRRRRRRRR
Cmon you guys, I look at the manga page on Friday and this thread is right up top with a spoilerific title. I could see slipping it into a post, but a thread title? I just read the chapter in English shonen jump, on Monday when it comes out and the chapter end was kinda dampened for me. There are rules for spoilers, right?
-
Ok fixed it:
(Now we only need Fourth Gear and Fifth Gear for a proper Luffy car / LuffyMobil gearbox) -
Ok fixed it:
(Now we only need Fourth Gear and Fifth Gear for a proper Luffy car / LuffyMobil gearbox)Gear 5: Luffy rubs himself all over to create a static electricity forcefield around his body.
-
Watch as he uses Haki to fire some kind of Kamehameha.
I mean, wasn't Goku used as sort of a basis for Luffy? -

I saw a message saying "spoilers are not to leave the board until full chapter is found."
This thread was posted accordingly I think.

A lot of people keep mentioning Gear 4 incorporating armament haki like he already does with his regular techniques, gear 2, and gear 3.
But no one's really brought up conqueror's haki. So far in the manga its only been used to take out fodder but iirc either an interview that discussed their being different tiers in the mastery of haki and hinted that conqueror's haki could do more than that. Especially in a final battle between Luffy and Doflamingo its all the more likely that a clash conqueror's haki will conclude that battle.
-
Covered in armament haki and set on fire so basically a mix of vergos full body haki and Sanjis hell memories but better cause its Luffy
-
You know, I'm half expecting Luffy to be like Hitmonchamp, he already has a fire punch so….maybe?
-
Didn't read the rest of the topic.
It's gotta have Haki involved a leat a little bit. Everything since we got to the New World has been about Haki.
I hate to have the boring guess, but I can't think of anything that makes sense to me to give a boost to his Rubber powers. All I've got is G2+G3+Haki=G4

Luffy will apply Haki with his gear, but i don't think it will by any means be "the gear".
Otherwise, hell, get Doflamingo with Gear 4.
-
I'm kind of expecting Luffy to pay Whitebeard a homage with his Gear 4 moves.
Hasshoken is pretty similar to what Whitebeard did by imbuing his direct attacks with shock waves, so I could see Luffy finding a way to make it possible for his body to utilize a stronger version of the Hasshoken techniques, similar to what he did with Soru when he used Gear 2 before the timeskip.
Luffy mirroring this scene is what I'd look forward the most if I turn out to be right.

G4 will not be Gear Stacking and Haki is not a Gear. @Cabbage:

This would merely be an extension of G2.

you know, somebody literally got the fire fruit this arc. With all these people that are creating fire out of their asses, coughSanjicough, I'm going to be extremely disappointed if Gear 4 allows Luffy to use even more fire based attacks.
Now, when it comes to the theory of Luffy pumping more air to create muscles/be stronger, the secret might be with this guy:
Now I'm not saying he's going to turn pink, but if Luffy creates holes on the sides of his head like Buu has (heck he can enlarge his ears lol), he might be able to pump air constantly. The main drawback I can see is that to use the form, Luffy would have to fight outside like he is right now against Dofla. If he fights in doors or in a cave or something, his pumping of air would be extremely limited. I like the theory that Luffy won't be able to stretch as much. I would like to see Luffy actually look more rubbery, like Buu kind of does, and be highly tolerant to physical attacks.
-
@Bond:
I personally think Gear 4 is going to be vulcanisation. Using the heat generated from Gear 2, Luffy can cause his entire body to harden and turn black, also giving his body the texture of hard rubber. He loses the ability to stretch, but in return, his speed and hardened body give him increased power and durability. It might even make him resistant to slashing attacks.
Reinforced with haki, it's possible Luffy could tear the birdcage apart.
The biggest drawback would probably be something like after using it, he won't be able to stretch for a while. Could justify why he doesn't use it more often.
The keyword will be Vulcan, and his attacks won't be named after firearms, to highlight his loss of range. I would love for his first attack to be named Vulcan Hammer.i've seen a picture of what you talking about somewhere fanned though but i think it's possible good theory !!
-
I hope Oda will call Gear 5 "Top Gear" just for the sake of potential "Top Gear" (Jeremy Clarkson) memes, puns and references

@xan:
I am not sure if the "blowing air in between the muscles" gear seem like a very good idea. Wouldn't it rupture the muscles due to continued pressure using air? I know it's a manga and the protagonist is ridiculously strong but it just doesn't seem very attractive. Apart from that, adding air to the muscles doesn't necessarily give you more power. It might just give an impression that the muscles are big.
C'mon, he has Law and Chopper to cure him (even Manshelly). Let him destroy his body.
-
I've seen people bring up the vulcanised idea for a while now. I think if it wasn't for the existence of haki, it'd make perfect sense. The problem is that it just seems like a shit version of haki. What Luffy currently has is something right out of a martial arts movie with his "will" hardening his body and all the other effects it has. Vulcanised rubber is just a mundane, normal thing. It's pretty crappy if haki is less hard and solid than vulcanised rubber. On the other hand, it is a very rubber-related thing that would make a rubber object more damaging, and this is right off the back of Doflamingo mocking Luffy for not damaging him.
The main thing that occurs to me is how he waited until now to use it despite already going through several tiers of being incredibly pissed off. I mean he basically got knocked around and held down while thinking that Law was about to die, yet he didn't use it. With Gear 2nd he used it way before Lucci and without the need for people to get almost beaten to death right in front of him for several chapters. When he thinks Gear 2nd didn't work, he's immediately prepared to use Gear 3rd until it turns out Blueno is unconscious anyway. So back to Gear 4th; when he does eventually use it, he asks for Law to be taken away - the time for simply getting the man out of the danger zone before he gets injured passed several weeks ago. It seems like whatever Gear 4th is, Luffy has limited control over it in some way, like it could've finished Law off if he was still in the vicinity. Maybe he mentally lacks control, like how SSJ was meant to be at first, or maybe the very nature of the attacks are hard to control.
-
Maybe Luffy already used Gear 4, when Bart saw him. It makes him super sexy and makes all the guys swoon.
Sorry, Doflamingo. You don't stand a chance.
-
Trying to put something new and should probably go in speculation but… If he could transform stuff he touch in rubber, give it some haki and use it to gear himself like with mr3.

That's the thing though. I'm under the impression that chapters are officially released on Mondays, and the spoilers and scanlations often come out Thursday-Friday.

I think despite haki, that there is a difference in attack strength. It's why the bone inflating Gear 3rd attacks do hurt Doffy while Gear 2nd's pure speed based attacks don't, eventhough both are clad in haki. Strong rubber might be just as fast as gear 2nd, but with added strength and the drawback that Luffy becomes less stretchable. I just think that haki might add to base strength.
-
What about this one ?
Luffy gets rid of his sandals. He uses the flexibility of his bones and muscles to turn his feet in hands, like a real Monkey !
Then he uses all his usual techniques with four limbs.
It would definitely make Luffy stronger…or not! Behehehe! -

Luffy blows air into his bones without rupturing his body, with an increased mastery of his rubber, i think it will not be too far-fetched for him to "channel the pressure throughout his elastic skin pores, into the outer environment as a pressure bomb", so in my prediction of this gear "whatever", it won't damage his own body. For aesthetics, the skin pores would be microscopic as well. We saw blown air makes an enlargened punch stronger, so more pressure inside bodily structures with smaller volume, i assume, would make even higher density In his punch.

good point. I think we can rule out some regular haji type ****, but maybe conqueror's is involved. I still think it'll focus on something with his DF though. also nice name

But what if you stack haki on top of vulcanisation?
Possibly 4 times more power! -
What about this?
It would be the perfect Gear 4! -

It would be the perfect Gear 4!this looks like Nightmare luffy, and oddly enough Gon's transformation into adulthood.
Hard pass. I don't need/want a bigger bulkier version of luffy.
-
I see alot of suggestions that G4 will be faster than G2. I hope not. I want something creative that won't make G2 obsolete.
-
I think it's more likely that Gear Fourth will be used purely for an increase in power, with Gear Second used in tandem to increase Luffy's speed.
-
I just don't think that would be classified as a whole new gear tbh.
Like you said, Luffy's already mashed the two together and never made any reference to it being a whole new technique.
This remains the case, even if he has greater control over the mix of techniques.
But has he used any expressly mentioned Gear 2nd/ Gear 3rd lmashed moves post time skip?
If not couldn't it be possible/ probable Oda would be holding it back from being shown precisely because it will be quite newly unique in it's use now: I. E. - Gear 4.Not necessarily saying this is true, or that I want, or think this is Gear 4th, just pointing out, IIRC; an expressly avoided combination, especially when DD is highlighting/ hinting that basically that fact that they'd (Gear 2nd/ Gear 3rd) work better together than separately might indicate them( the combination) being saved/ avoided to be used soon, in a newly unexpected way. The fact that this also happens to coincide with the introduction of Gear 4 just seems highly….
oddly coincidental?...
So would this be against DD specifically, the BC, or both?
And would that really be rubber related/ improved upon/ creative in rubber's uniqueness; or more just a new attack/ capability while in Gear 4?
If so how would he get the ability to do that? What about this one ?
Luffy gets rid of his sandals. He uses the flexibility of his bones and muscles to turn his feet in hands, like a real Monkey !
Then he uses all his usual techniques with four limbs.
It would definitely make Luffy stronger…or not! Behehehe!Points for getting more creative as time goes on.
-
I've seen people saying/hoping for G4th to be G2nd + Full body Armament Haki; without wanting to sound rude: Why?
Luffy can already use armament in his arms and legs. Having armament in the rest of his body won't make him any stronger, it'll just add to his defensive capacity, which isn't what he needs right now, he needs extra offensive capacity.
-
yep. definitely gear second to the second power. g2^2 = g4.
-

It would definitely make Luffy stronger…or not! Behehehe!I doubt that will happen this soon, that is the ultimate Monkey D family technique after all. Although with his rubber technique it will be easier for him to master it than it was for Dragon and Garp.
-
He can't touch Doflamingo with Gear 3 and Gear 2 is too weak so Gear 4 will fire shockwaves. If it were just muscle enchancer it would kinda make Gear 3 pointless.

Right now there are 3 main theories predicting G4: I) Vulcanization II) Nightmare Luffy metamorphosis III) muscle enhancement (air into muscle …)
I) The fact that it impairs or restricts luffy's stretching abillities sounds really intriguing and legit, but it would be just like CoA. Also, Vulcanization is achieved through extreme temperatures. I can't see Luffy heating up that much ... and it won't be ... "stronger" it will just make his body "harder" which is the exact same thing CoA does.
II) Luffy "disbursing and distributing" air between his bones and combining it, Maybe with G2, So that it's a mix of G2 and G3. We have seen him do this against moria which was super effective but tiring. He probably has gained some proficiency in using his gears and might be able to find the perfect balance between G2 and G3 to make G4 which looks like Nightmare Luffy.
III) Muscle enhancement sounds really tempting taking into account that G2 is blood and G3 in bones, but how can he manage it??? Pumping air between muscles is just dumb, cause it won't affect the actual muscle and G2 didn't work by blowing air in
his veinsIn the summary, I think the nightmare luffy is the most probable one. It might vary a bit, and the enhancements he gets might also be a bit different but I think his overall appearance will be like nightmare luffy.
-
He can't touch Doflamingo with Gear 3 and Gear 2 is too weak so Gear 4 will fire shockwaves. If it were just muscle enchancer it would kinda make Gear 3 pointless.
Gear 3 makes him a Giant. Enhancing muscles will just make him strong. Not really the same thing.
Gear 3 would still be the best Gear to fight large monsters like Kraken/Sea Kings or for large scale destruction like Noah. -
III) Muscle enhancement sounds really tempting taking into account that G2 is blood and G3 in bones, but how can he manage it??? Pumping air between muscles is just dumb, cause it won't affect the actual muscle
Think of Luffy's muscles as an interconnected series of balloons, where he can constrict parts and relax others, and which can stretch. He fills it with air - not as much as in gear third, but still quite a bit, then compresses it back to normal (or more normal) size with his muscles. He then uses squeezing his muscles like a pump (similar to gear second) to send the compressed air (and his arm) shooting explosively forward much more powerfully than his normal punches (he would combine this with an attack, obviously). It probably won't provide rapid movement the way gear second does, but it will provide a big increase in attack strength without the speed penalty imposed by gear third.
I phrased that as though it's definitely how gear fourth works, but that was only for simplicity in phrasing. I am not arguing that this is how it works at all, merely explaining how it might.
-
You know "muscle" really doesn't make you stronger in hitting. If anything it'll probably be defendive if muscle.
It's form that makes the punch.
Luffy having a new fighting style would be great because styles make fights.
-

Im intrigued by the idea that Gear 4 could be a defensive form. It being muscle enchancer wouldn't be such a bad thing on that case.
