Losing the great competition of recent history, puttering along at a glitchy unstable rate, strung out on past glories, and periodically collapsing into disaster every five games or so. Generally limping through history.

Those are some strong parallels.

@mario:
For me it's one of these three.
-
@mario:
Yep. One of my favs. Always wished they'd make a new (well made) version of that stage with that music.
I also love:
-
Stardust Speedway is underated.
-
Hidden Palace Sonic 2 is excellent as is Oil Ocean. Ice Cap is a standard. Generations made me a big fan of Stardust Speedway JP. Panic Puppet Genesis is godly though.
Oddly enough I really enjoy, of all things, Sonic and the Black Knight's soundtrack. It almost makes me want to replay the game but then I remember it is absolutely garbage.
-
Stardust Speedway is underated.
I'd be shocked if it were since it's one of the best songs in Sonic CD especially the bad future remix.
-
This reminds me, I really need to replay Sonic CD at some point.
-
Since we are talking about music in Sonic games:
-
Came here to make sure Ice Cap Zone was included in the discussion. Excellent.
I'll add what is probably the best modern Sonic song.
[hide] -
Ya can't not mention this song.
[hide]SA2 was my first Sonic game, and I sing along every time I play City Escape.
(don't worry guys, I have Sonic Mega Collection for the Genesis classics)[/hide]
-

[hide]Rooftop Run wasn't even the best song in Unleashed though. :P shots fired I really like Cool Edge.
Also, Sonic '06: miserable game, very solid soundtrack. I wish Wave Ocean was in a level that wasn't terrible.
-
I just learned of this game called Freedom Planet that was kickstarted and launche in the middle of past year and somehow I didn't heard of it. If someone wants to play a good sonic game…there is.

[hide]Blasphemy .

two things
-
i have given into great sin and read a lot of the sonic wiki entry on Blaze the Cat. I like her a lot and I am having a good time with Sonic Rush overall. hideki okamura's ost is so tightly done too, havin a good time although some stuff like moving platforms and block pushing is really not suited to this style haha.
-
NAKAMURA IS MY FAVORITE SONIC COMPOSER his stuff is so incredibly advantageously designed for the mega drive and is probably the most consistently high quality Sonic music from zone to zone.
everyone should know this is my favorite sonic tune at this point

Apparently Sonic 4 Episode 3 was a thing.
Also… Green Hill Zone always.
-
I like the new Windy Hill song from Lost World
It's very Rooftop Run-ish -
@Galaxy:

Sega cancelling sequels, what else is new.

@Galaxy:
Apparently Sonic 4 Episode 3 was a thing.
Well yeah, they said from the start they planned for it to be a trilogy, and that they named the next one "Episode 2" rather than just "Sonic 5" should have driven that point home. It was always their excuse for having so few levels per game. (It was only 4 stages per game, right?)
Did anyone actually still think that was coming after all this time?
It wasn’t just bad enough that it was a bad game on its own with wonky physics and lackluster level design, but that it had the sheer audacity to claim it was a “true sequel” to the Genesis games is just flat-out insulting. There’s a reason it didn’t get a level in Generations. (Though it does boggle the mind that some other games made it to generations you'd think they'd want to ignore…)
-
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode III will be released alongside Half-Life 2 Episode III as part of a new deal reached between SEGA and Valve
-
Numbering it that way was always a doomed prospect anyway, they should have just called it 4 and then 5, put less weight on it.
True, but wasn't calling it 4 putting weight on it anyway? It's one thing for people to compare each Sonic game to the last, but "4" invited comparisons to the three genesis games, and the quality of those games are less disputed than the 3D games.

Four Genesis games. Not three.
And had they nailed the physics, or had more stages, it woulda been fine and they coulda then gone onto 5 and 6, without pressure, same as Megaman did for a while, but… To have part 4:Episode 1 and then Episode 2 to excuse having only 4 stages was a bad idea.

Sonic 1, 2, 3…..aah, Sonic & Knuckles too.

I played a demo of episode 1 way back when and something did kinda feel off.

Plus Sonic CD if you just wanna count the quality of the era in general.

The strong resemblance of early Sonic songs to 80's RnB and New Jack Swing has always amused me. Spring Yard zone in particular sounds like a lost Cameo song or something.

I don't think either set of games is disputed at all.
One is agreed upon good, the other agreed upon bad lol. -

Spring Yard Zone meshes well enough with "

Turns out that Ice Cap Zone isn't Smooth Criminal:
-
Is this the part where we start posting Sonic R songs?
shots fired
Blasphemy .
No, you're both wrong, I'm right.
-
Sonic R is underrated. I'm not sure if it was really that good as a racing game, since it was heavily dependent on shortcuts (and how you could take those depended on your character, like some were able to go over water and others couldn't), and once you KNEW those shortcuts you'd just absolutely destroy the competition… but it was pretty fun and there was a fair ammount of exploration and unlocking to do. They could have built from the model it established and created a pretty great side franchise ala Mario Kart.
Except of course, they didn't because that's Sonic's curse.
The shame of the 2 player versus mode where you race to find balloons is that it wasn't randomized at all, so whoever owned the game was inevitably going to consistently win.
Mostly I don't understand in how all the Sonic racing games since, NONE of them seem to grock that "the main characters all run super fast" and insist putting them in cars or hoverboards or whatever. And have also been very bad. (Though Sega All-Stars racing is apparently okay.)
-
I've generally stuck with the argument that 'Sonic would outrun any race car, so he drives one to keep things fair'. It's like saying, "Well I can win a potato sack race without using the potato sack." I'm sure he could, but this is a potato sack race. Get your ass in that potato sack.

Do they considering Tails flies and Knuckles pretends he's a mole.

All Stars Racing Transformed is actually really great. You can't whip it out at parties like Mario Kart but it's a seriously fun, challenging, arcadey racer. Also I never liked the 3D games just because turning a character running into a racing game feels slippery and weird as fuck. I like that Sonic has his car.
-
All Stars Racing Transformed is an outstanding racer in wonderful arcade style, and while it's not as polished, it features better balanced items than Mario Kart by far: they won't win the race for you, but when used skillfully they'll even the playing field. I like that in my racing games, and personally I think it deserves all its acclaim.
I prefer it to Mario Kart for when I gotta go fast. :D

"Why am I still playing Modern Sonics, and semi- chronologically too. I gave them the fairest possible chance and I've hated so much of this. I like classic Sonic I guess, this was just an experience in going over a franchise I hadn't seen much of! I don't have to play more! Yet here I am. I'm glad I can keep going back to my oasis that is Sonic Generations when I get sick of torturing myself with Sonic Adventure 2, or when Sonic Rush is just being too hard. I mean, I can stop any time. Why would I play all these games I hate. Well, I mean, I'd miss seeing characters. Like, I mean, this story sucks right? Oh god, Sonic Rush is really good though, and wow Blaze is really c….cute. huh. That's weird.and wow! I love her friendship with Cream, they are a great team, I can't wait for the next cutscene. Maybe I should see when the Archie comics added Bla--"

Sonic Boom has been patched (in Europe only, at the moment): http://www.sonicstadium.org/2015/01/rise-of-lyric-unofficial-patch-notes/
-
it’s over 1GB in size and contains a number of fixes.
"The game now has this huge amount of data we forgot out of the retail package. However, nothing can change that the intrinsic mechanics are still terrible."
-
I await the 2GB patch that makes Knuckles not an idiot.

I still want to know why Knuckles was made THAT stupid….

I still want to know why Knuckles was made THAT stupid….
Because stupidity jokes AM SO FUNNY!!!
-
Looks like the patch is out in North America now too.
If you're "lucky" enough to own the game, have at it.
-
-
This is the greatest thing I've ever seen.
-
Oh look the show's back! That guilt trip episode was funny
-
Omg, are the pausing sequences edited in, or was that really in the show??
Because if it was in the show, that is amazing.
-
They were edited in, but the original scene is just as golden:
Yeah, episodes 9 and 10 were pretty good. Eggman's voice messages were glorious.
