New chapter? This is a nice surprise
Chapter 772: Cabbage & Romeo
-
-
Most of the Gladiators are NOT pirates, so it's useful to Fujitora's cause that they take down Dofla's pirates, otherwise we would have another Alabasta where the Strawhats are the heroes.
Fuji must take down Dofla and not hype the pirates, so it's good that the Gladiators take down Dofla's subordinates.
Gladius will be OHKOed anyway, lose all hopes.Hajrudin and Cavendish are pirates. And the Happou Navy is hinted to be made up of pirates too.
In fact, so far everybody has been defeated by pirates, except Buffalo.
-
i like how mangastream calls Cabbage and Romeo "tweedledee and tweedledum"(page 16)
-
Oda is just building up Luffy's allies and giving them debt so we the readers can care for them more cuz lets be real, we knew that they were going to help Luffy, but we do/did not give a crap about them. I care about Sai, Ideo (Oda is such a dude) and a little about the giant but only because of Ussop.
i think most people just dont get how strong Luffys allies should appear to us. Lets not forget that all these allies are being build for after luffy becomes Pirates king imo.
Its been forshadowed that the world will go upside down and WG will fall after one piece is found and the only way its gonna be believable is if his allies can actually be considered a force and not some fodders.
i think DD was the perfect opponent to do so. I seriously wouldnt like it if DD crew would actually give SH a challenge even with all his build. DD build is enough to justify the struggle luffy will have.
We had enough of shichibukais up till now and after timeskip they shouldnt be the challenge when Zoro and Sanji should be able to take them out at this point if they want to have any chance with the yonkou commanders (with the exception of Hawkeyes)Doflamigos crew is there to be defeated by others. I mean Oda made it clear after separating the crew. He intentionally left on DR the part of the crew that was clearly(or appeared to be) superior (Luffy, Zoro, Franky) and 2 other crew members to show us their growth (Usopp, Robin(will be soon)) and he left a strong opponent chasing the "weak" part of the crew to concentrate on them later.
-
She should try to disarm Diamante. He probably isn't as much of an offensive threat without his sword.
He has a bunch of other weapons stored in his diamond coins.
-
Next cover side-story has to be about Sai and Baby 5. That'd be perfect LOL
I second this! WE need to see a wedding in OP WE had two couples form during the current story (current as in during th time SH crew formed and took to sea) but didn't see their weddings (those couples are Mr.9+Ms. Monday and Wapol+Ms.Universe)
Lest we forget, there is no reason for her to go, since Usopp could perfectly well shoot them the keys, as he did before in Enies Lobby.
In Enies Lobby, Usopp was able to contact Franky to let him know about the keys he shot to him. Here, while Viola or his newly awakened haki would let him aim to the right spot, here Usopp has no way to contact the people/person about it so they would look for the keys.
So while, you're right in that Usopp could perfectly well shoot them the keys, its a futile effort if the receiver isn't aware of the action.
-
Ok, Mangastream's translation, they're adding "-bay" at the end of almost every Bartolomeo sentence. Why? Does he has some sort of speech quirk?
First time I'm seeing this being used.
-
there
re several character with speech quirks, some translations don
t add them, some do.also: im really curious about ideo
s arms. the middle section seems to be at least twice as long as the others. doesn
t seem to be the case with Apoo`s arms or the other members of his tribe -

I wouldn't be surprised if they made it up.
People make fun of MangaPanda, but MangaStream is far more guilty of incorrect translations and making shit up. -

Pretty sure he could have simply aimed for Law's head.
Hillarious and practical. What's not to like?

Rebeccas character arc is disappointing. You can sympathize with her, even if just a little, because of just awful all that shit she had to endure was, but when you build up a character to a point, with her actually attacking someone is a noteworthy moment and considered development, isn't it lame when that never really leads to anything? I mean, Oda wrote the scene in Block D so that she could advance. Now, if this was because she never was really strong enough to tango with these guys or if Oda felt like he really needed Hakuba for some reason I don't know.
I originally strongly believed that all this was the foundation for this fight. Rebecca getting a pass by the author to pass block D and enter the last round to finally find the resolve to strike the man who shot her mother, so that in this fight, she would confront him with an actual blade and intention to kill or at least harm. I thought that her trembling on the floor after Diamante smacked her into the ground would led in her overcoming that trauma and pick herself up, which was replaced with Barto protecting her.
Again, a little disappointed, but that is going to build up even more the final fight, right? Rebecca will become brave and help her father in the fight, who should be appreciative on the account of only having on fucking leg and needing some help.
If all of this lead to the final moral being "you never HAD to be a fighter", would that make you guys happy?
I mean Kyros comes from a normal place. He's a dad. A part of being a parent is letting go of your child and let it fight its own battles, but somewhere deep down, you'll always want to protect them, it's unconditional love for a child and not wanting them to be hurt. He doesn't want his child to fight. He knew she could not avoid it, but as far as he is concerned, when he can do it, he will. I'm not a robot, I can understand that. But when it gets in the way of something that has been build up…or I have been tricked into believingNow, if all the shit I just mentioned never happened, I would've been accepting of this and appreciative to Odas narrative, but when you are misleading me into thinking there will be some sort of satisfying conclusion to something that has been clearly set up, why not just follow that?
Again, why? Why not have Rebecca and Kyros tag team him. We understand. He has one leg, and she, while capable, doesn't have the experience of someone like Diamante. Is it a fan thing, he doesn't want us to think of Diamante as a pushover? Well, that's why there's two of them. It's a good way for us to see Diamante as competent, something most of you guys want, being accepting of the officers reduced role, but still expecting full fights for the elite officers, right?
That would've been a pretty awesome way to do it. They can't individually best him, so he'll keep his dignity as a menacing and effective villain, while making the other two guys look good and settling family matters together, leading to a nice sincere moment of Father and Daughter being an integral part of the freeing of Dressrosa and conquering their own demons. That would be fucking awesome
Or at least it's better than "huh, I guess I was never really a fighter"
I still strongly hope for something like thisEdit; You guys are way too fast for me

Oh boy, lots to cover.
It seems like most people agree that there is nothing inherently wrong with Kyros wanting to protect his daughter, even if he is overdoing it. The problem will arise if Rebecca never steps up and starts fighting Diamante too, but again most people seem to foresee Rebecca joining the fight.
However, some people argue over whether Kyros is acting consistently within his character. I believe he is, because right now his character revolves around guilt, powerlessness, and overcompensation.
Kyros has built his reputation and his self-identity on his prowess as a fighter. He was never defeated for 3,000 matches and then suddenly, in an instant, everything is taken from him. He doesn't win one fight, and suddenly his king is fallen, his people damaged and tricked, his wife slain in his arms, and he's powerless to stop any of this. As a simple fighter, he blames himself for his lack of strength and thinks desperately that he could fix everything if he only had his strength back. In the meantime, his tender daughter thinks she's an orphan.
Because Kyros feels powerless, he forces Rebecca to learn to fight. He doesn't want her to hurt other people, but he can't protect her so he has to be harsh on her to make her learn. We see him remembering this as he fights, indicating he feels some guilt over it. As Rebecca grows older, she comes to resent not having a real father and enters the Colosseum to win the power to defeat Doflamingo herself. Not only is Kyros concerned for her safety, he thinks that she can't rely on him because he's too weak. He sees Rebecca acting against her own pacifist nature because Kyros is too weak to protect her, too weak to change anything, too weak to be a good father. So, he plots with the dwarves to overthrow Doflamingo. Think about their plan. They have absolute faith in Kyros's strength, which must have come from the stories about himself he told them. Their whole plan revolves around changing Kyros back into a human because he's convinced that, if he has his strength back, he can fix everything.
When Kyros becomes human again, he immediately charges Doflamingo, uses lethal force from the beginning, and disposes of both the clone and Buffalo without hesitation. He has his power back, and now he is going to be the one to save the kingdom. He does this not because he wants to be the country's hero but because he feels personally responsible for Dressrosa's current state. With King Riku there tied up, it brings back memories of ten years ago and how Kyros failed his king and closest friend. Tears come to his eyes. When it becomes clear that it was a fake Doflamingo and the group is ejected from the castle, he charges off right away to kill Doflamingo. Now, as Parasite takes effect and the country erupts into chaos, he even blames himself for not killing Doflamingo when he had the chance.
The only thing that snaps him out of this suicidal charge is the sight of his daughter in danger. As she encounters the man who killed Scarlet in a place full of memories, Kyros is stricken by fear and guilt once more. He, a gladiator and a guard, couldn't protect Scarlet, couldn't save his king, and couldn't do enough to protect Rebecca as a little girl, but now he's strong and she's in danger. Kyros remembers her as a little girl afraid to fight and as a young woman braving the dangers of the bloody Colosseum because he wasn't strong enough to protect her, and he tells her she will never have to fight again. Even though he was always there for her as a child, he feels like he didn't do enough. Moreover, her cry of "You're not my father" earlier this day likely still sticks with him. He's now determined to prove he's a good father and do for her what he couldn't as a toy. We know that he did the best he could, and Rebecca knows it too, but here Kyros is overcompensating by trying to do it all himself. He has his identity as a fighter, and if he can't protect Rebecca at his full strength, what is he good for? I would add that the change from toy to human has changed the dynamic between Rebecca and Kyros and both are acting like this is their first time meeting, so Kyros wants to make the perfect, powerful first impression.
This is a bit of a stretch, but I believe another reason he doesn't want Rebecca involved is because he doesn't want any blood on her hands. I believe he fully intends to kill his wife's murderer. We've already seen him trash Buffalo and use lethal force against Doflamingo. Remember how he would use gloves to touch baby Rebecca because she was pure and he felt unclean? He has blood and guilt on his hands once again but he doesn't want that taint to spread to Rebecca if she helps him beat Diamante.
So, to recap this novel, Kyros has his identity wrapped up in his strength as a fighter. He feels guilt for the past ten years and forcing Rebecca to fight because he was too weak to do so himself. Now that he's human again, he wants to make up for being, in his mind, a poor father and is overcompensating by trying to everything himself. Soon Rebecca will join the fight voluntarily and against Kyros's wishes and he'll feel guilty some more, but Rebecca or whoever else will later tell him he was a great father and to stop being an idiot. It'll probably culminate in an emotional, bare-handed hug where Kyros will feel the warmth of another human again.
Not sure how Robin's arrival will change how or who will fight, though.
-
I don't care much about any of the Dofla crew, I'm anxious to see the strawhat fights. At least with Hakuba and Bart we have characters which we've seen a lot of build up over. I don't care much about Gladius or Diamante but I think we'll get some good chapters considering the protagonists of those fights have actually had more than a couple of pages spent on them.
-
Yeah…I'm gonna reread this whole arc. Mangpanda is giving me headaches.
-
Wtf there was a new chapter? I just posted in 771 if there was gonna be one..
-
You're being very narrow minded.
Entirely different characters.
Read the previous statement.
Besides, she wants to fight now. It's Kyros who doesn't want her to.
Half gag? Haha, just stop.
Who are you to decide if she has a reason to die? Lol.
She is in this instance.
No, she's ran for years. She has never actually fought anyone before this arc.
You should.
Lol I know Kyros doesn't want her to fight. It was in my second post. This about Rebecca herself. And look there you go, agreeing she wants to fight now. So let her do it. That's pretty damned warrior like eh? Wanting to fight. Wanting to protect what you love. Kyros doesn't want to see Rebecca hurt? I'm sure Rebecca thinks something similar about Kyros.
Do you not realize that this sacred warrior pact you're touting is partially based on a humor? It's step away from Buggy gaining the admiration of those various prisoners. Reread the chapter in which everyone's starry-eyed over their savior, a limp and battered Usopp. It's like Franky not operating on his back. Something silly based on a very serious premise. And vice versa. Oda twists that sorta shit together all the time. They're all enamored/indebted to Usopp when his fight against Sugar culminated in managing to get her to eat a spicy piece of fruit/her getting him to eat his own spicy piece of fruit.
Wait I'm not allowed to say that her parent's life is something that's a reasonable thing to fight/die over? Yet you can properly say with authority it isn't. Haha cool.
And I damn well am going to.
Doubt it. Oda's not big on showing murder, especially if it's from a good guy. They'll amount to defeating him and that's pretty much it. Any deaths we've been shown were from flashbacks, WB/Ace, and possibly the four soldiers that drank that water of life thing.
-
Ok, Mangastream's translation, they're adding "-bay" at the end of almost every Bartolomeo sentence. Why? Does he has some sort of speech quirk?
First time I'm seeing this being used.
Didn't Luffy mention at one point that Barto's accent gets thicker when he's excited? Maybe that's what this is? Still, it feels like MS is overdoing it.
-
wall text block
ouch, my eyes… I couldn't keep up reading that, some spacing would help there
-
for what it's worth, Barto talks the same way in the anime.
-
ouch, my eyes… I couldn't keep up reading that, some spacing would help there
I separated it now, I hope now it's more readable.
I don't know how 'valuable' my input is anyway, since I'm pretty sure some crucial things I didn't touch on, like how Kyros' development relates to Rebeccas and how it would influence her thinking with him being there. But it still seems like the build up is going down the drain. -
Seriously. Wait till the fight is actually over before you judge it. We don't even know if Robin is going to be involved in it yet!
This is just like people calling foul on Usopp vs. Sugar all those weeks ago when we only got their first round ending in an unexpected and silly way… which was then followed up a few weeks later by his actual crowning victory haki moment.
-
The moment Rebecca said she wanted to fight it was practically confirmed that she would.
Even more so when Kyros said he never wants her to pick up a sword again. -

See, I always wonder about this one.
Does the fact that you got a moment later on that was cool and awesome makes the earlier terribleness less terrible in your eyes? Because me, for example, while I indeed view the second scene as cool and awesome, not to mention working really well with Usopp's skillset and character, I still consider his behavior during the first fight to be not line with his established character, and still consider it a questionable scene as well. Does it work differently for you?

You know what would be the true ideal scenario here?
Rebecca defeating Diamante without harming him at all.
Because I can't help but think that people are missing the point of Rebecca's character. Her inability to hurt is not supposed to be a bad thing (it's definitely not a trauma or demon), especially after Diamante's and Doflamingo's own philosophy about how blood must be shed and Kyros' very own backstory where his violent habits were portrayed as negative. She would be just proving Diamante and Doflamingo right if she just decided to have the intention to kill and win because of it. It would be nice to have one character proving them wrong.
This is further shown by how futile her offense was shown to be. She's not that kind of fighter.
-
Largely I didn't find the original scene all that bad to begin with. I don't see Usopp's running away in the first fight as bad at all? He was up against much stronger opponents, and had temporary amnesia about the backup he was supposed to have there, and had no real attachment to the little people, and we saw the skill and strength of the enemies there meant he had no chance of doing the fanficcy thing of just sniping the grape into an open mouth or whatever. But he still stepped up to the moment, went to face the enemy… and got murdered for it.
Usopp has gained confidence, but he's still a coward at heart and he knows better than to take on monsters out of his league in an up close one on one. It was fine. SHows more bravado for him to face the things hes scared of than for him to be confident he can overtake something when he can't... but he still completed the mission in a unique and interesting way and the crazy face Oda drew there got a genuine laugh so that goes a long way.
Besides which, it WAS just the first half of the fight. (AND Trebol wasn't his opponent. If he was, yes, we should have seen more of that. But he wasn't, so him getting beaten and then moving on with the narrative is fine.)
No one get's on Luffy's case for getting his feet embedded in concrete during the Arlong fight. No one ever complains that Luffy was doofy looking when he fought Crocodile the second time, or that he lost to Enel and had to run up a beanstalk with a giant gold ball or turning chibi while fighting Lucchi or any other number of setbacks and turn arounds in the course of the series. (Though everyone gets on Sanji's for failing to fight Califa, and then Nami for having a skimpy bath fight against her) Stuff happens, and characters have off moments. Its how they deliver in the end that counts.
-
And just like that dellinger is down. Good chapter and a spotlight for Cabbage
-
Who the hell is Romeo?
Also R.I.P. Dellinger. Your sexy gams will live forever in my heart.
-
@Miss:
Who the hell is Romeo?
Bartolomeo is pronounced Barutromeo in Japanese. Basically, a play on words.
-
@Miss:
Who the hell is Romeo?
Barto, "Romeo" comes from the Romanized spelling of his name. (Barutoromeo)
-
I don't really like how characters are dropping like flies left and right. Oda's not handling this arc's characters very well, though it is very hard to pull off with 50 something new characters.
-
@400MillionBelis:

Would you prefer this arc continue until 2017?
They're minor characters, minor fights. They get a move or two in, finish their battles, then move on. Its nice that they're getting as much focus as they are.
(And besides, the FINAL arc in a decade's time is gonna be the truly crazy all out monstrosity. Think of how this arc is, only with basically every character ever introduced in the series.)
-
Great chapter. I really hope Dellinger's not done, though. I would like to see him have a real fight.
-
all flunkies require 10-20 chapter fights each
-
@Cyan:
all flunkies require 10-20 chapter fights each
No, but two or three would be nice.
And it would provide occasions to turn the potential future allies into something more then a collection of one-dimensional traits.
-
Hey Darth you changed your avatar, I like it
Well guess we have awhile till we get a new chapter so what y'all think I should pick up and read?
-
Chinjao, Sai, Cavendish, Bartolomeo, King Riku + Dagama, all these have gotten plenty of exposure, a place in the world, alliances, a mission, dreams, even flashbacks and backstories, plus a very decent ammount of paneltime considering the 60 something characters introduced during the arc. Others like Blue Gilly, Hajrudin or Ideo were given much less material to work with, true, but out of these ones the only anomaly is Hajrudin, both Ideo and Blue fell quite easily. And Hajrudin's scene was awesome, and we know it might very, very well comeback during the Elbaf arc (or island visit, wathever).
These fights are fast, true, but most of the gladiators have been given a pretty decent, quality panel time.
-
I do blame Oda. And I suppose my reaction mostly stems from being heavily invested in that character and really liking him in his earlier appearences.
His goal to remove Shichibukai is honestly really interesting, and it breaks the status quo, something we don't get much in the series.
Hm. I'm still waiting for a miracle in regards to him, but it seems unlikely to pass.
While it is interesting, it honestly is not surprising. The problem with the Shichibukai is that when Luffy beats one, another pirate just ends up filling that spot. Its a never ending cycle. Its something that needs to be resolved before the end of the story anyway.
-
Hey Darth you changed your avatar, I like it

Black Haze, thank me later
-
Hey Darth you changed your avatar, I like it

So do I.
Recommending Kingdom to people everywhere.
Or classics. Like Bakuman, for example, which I only read recently and found kinda fun. Though the ending is a bit lacking.
-
Well guess we have awhile till we get a new chapter so what y'all think I should pick up and read?
The Seven Deadly Sins. Greatest not-Jump title.
-
Honestly I thought the Ideo stuff was really cool.
As good as any of the other moments for me. -
Well guess we have awhile till we get a new chapter so what y'all think I should pick up and read?
Uzumaki (has nothing to do with the recently finished shonen series)
only 20 chapters! =D
-
So,only gladius left…Wonder if dellinger is completely out yet....
-
No, but two or three would be nice.
Oh, you mean like Enies Lobby?
That would suck big time, especially when we still have 6 officers remaining.
At this point, Machvise would just have been defeated, and we would expect more 20 chapters until the main fight.
-
Good thing Oda isn't going Enies Lobby-style with these fights .
-
Would you prefer this arc continue until 2017?
They're minor characters, minor fights. They get a move or two in, finish their battles, then move on. Its nice that they're getting as much focus as they are.
Either way, there's gonna be problems. As I said, a myriad of characters is hard to pull off.
-

As good as any of the other moments for me.i am agree, he had a pretty ending… and he said what he had to!
-

We've had extensive build-up for both fighters and members of the family. We've had flashback. We've had the entire coloseum side-story that lead to nowhere. We dedicated MONTHS to them instead of moving along with the main story.
And NOW of all times you are arguing the neck-breaking pace!? You've spent days convincing me that the snail pace we've had earlier was fine, and now you are suddenly like "Yeah, we can't waste time on side characters and plot-points, we have main fight to watch! Let's wrap it all up in five chapters tops."
Really now? We won't see those characters for years. I know you have the habit of defending whatever Oda does but this is getting ridicoulous.
-

We are not on Bleach level though.

Man, I love the way you just keep putting words on other people's mouths.
Also, "defending whatever Oda does"? It's not my fault I'm not a nitpicky critic like you with ridiculous standards for a comic book written by a middle-aged family man.
Weren't you complaining that Dressrosa was getting too long? Now you want it to be longer?
Without the Colosseum, we wouldn't have those gladiators out there. It was needed to introduce those fighters. How the hell is it a side-story?
You know the build up happened 25 chapters ago, right? That's half a year right there. Those fights had already started 20 chapters ago, and the gladiators and officers were already fighting by then with named characters already dropping out. Right now, we're getting the results, and they're most likely going to take around 10 chapters including the last 3 ones.
While I would've liked a bit more focus on Dellinger and Co., we certainly don't need more than one chapter to deal with them. It would kill the momentum we've been getting lately. The flashback itself required a recap right after it to make people remember what was happening in present time (because it lasted 2 months).
