I'm afraid I have a bone to pick with all of you. Love & Loathe #14
Let's get our skull-joke on! It's time to evaluate: "Dead Bones" Brook (aka The Humming Swordsmen aka The Gentleman Skeleton aka Soul King)!
(Brook: "I would say 'thank you, with all of my heart' but I am all bones! YohoHoHOOHo!)
Mermaid poop...Here's the deal: We are looking to hyper-critique a character to try and pinpoint what makes them great and what makes them terrible. After enough people respond, I will organize what are the best and worst traits of the character, and compile an evaluation post later. Also, don't worry if you have the same answers as others, the point is to figure out a common denominator for the character.
So the two questions for you are:
What one thing do you consistently love about Brook?
What one thing do you consistently loathe about Brook?
And give Brook a rating of between 1 and 5, with 5 being the highest(.5's are acceptable - ex. 1.5 or 4.5). I will tally these.
Enjoy.
Love: I love terrible puns. And music. And afros. And perverts.
Loathe: How the hell did his hair not decay?
Overall:4.5/5
Love: I love Brook's backstory. How it tied in to Laboon from hundreds of chapters before( does anyone knows if this was planned too, like Rayleigh?), his interaction with his former crew as well as their sad deaths, Bink's Sake is an amazing song and was perfect as their farewell. It's one of my favorite backstories from the SHs. Love how creative he got with his Yomi Yomi fruit after the timeskip. What seemed like a fairly useless fruit turned out to have some very interesting applications. Oh, and also I love how his quirky nature is the result of spending 50 years in isolation. To prevent himself from going insane he developed these fun and nonsensical quirks and that's really awesome, it adds a new layer of depth to his character.
Loathe:Eh…I can't really think of anything specific. I guess I don't like how he didn't have many moments to shine so far but that's mostly because he's the newest crewmate. And he was pretty awesome in Fishman island against Zeo at least. Oh, and his skull jokes are annoying sometimes.
Overall: 4/5
Love: His laugh, his bone jokes, he's a musician, he's based on Slash (\m/). When he get serious he gets all badass too. He's my favorite Strawhat.
Loathe: He hasn't any real fight yet.
5/5.
@Light:
How the hell did his hair not decay?
Strong roots!
Love: Probably my favorite SH, excluding the captain. Brook knows how to make an appearance, dress in style, and his comedic timing is excellent. He's a swordsman, but his fencing fighting style is very distinct from any other that we've seen in the series. He uses music in his attacks to hypnotize and confuse his opponents. His Devil Fruit gives him not only immortality, but also command over the icy winds of hell itself. Oh, did I forget to mention his back story? Laboon is probably my favorite nonhuman character in all of One Piece, and his history with Brook and the Rumbar pirates is one of the most touching, heart wrenching stories that I have ever read (on par with Chopper's flashback). The way his history was made to tie into the Strawhats' journeys before Thriller Barque was fantastic. Skull jokes aside (God, I love a good skull joke), Brook is a hilarious caricature of your typical dirty old man, and I never tire of hearing him ask to see the ladies' panties, only to receive the obligatory skull-crushing blow in return. He's a musician rockstar, something that even I have dreamed of being on more than one occasion. How cool is that? And to top it all off, he's his own Jolly Roger. Go BROOK!
Loathe: My only fear is that I think I can already see how Oda intends to play out the reunion with Laboon. I can't help but worry that Brook is never going to make it back to the twin cape, and that it will be up to one of the other crew members to play the tone dial. I'm tearing up just thinking about it…
5/5
Love: The creative use of his ability to separate his soul from his body, and whatever/however he managed to incorporate ice/freezing winds into his attacks. His puns (I'm a big fan of puns). His music is pretty good, and I like his fashion sense and afro. And most of all, his backstory with Laboon. I'm looking forward to see Brook reunite with Laboon more than Luffy becoming Pirate King, Zoro vs Mihawk (or Shiliew, but i think it would be more epic with Mihawk), the unraveling of the Void Century, All Blue, etc. Was also clever how he tricked Jora.
Loathe: I really wanted him to be the one to get his shadow back from Ryuuma. Zoro had better story reasons to fight him, so I can't fault Oda for this. I just really wanted to see it…
5/5. My favorite Straw Hat.
Love: His entire concept. Gentleman, perverted, musical, swordsman skeleton who has an afro, a top hat, so-bad-it's-good sense of humor and now rock star status. And he still manages to have a surprisingly deep backstory.
He's easily one of the most insane characters Oda has come up with. Perhaps, even, the most insane.
Loathe: He joined too late. He's currently suffering of character underdevelopment and lack of memorable scenes and fights.
In fact, I believe many people here are still not used to him as one of the main characters yet, and that's a shame.
4.5/5
Love
Out of all possible characters, I never imagined a skeleton (with an afro) to join the strawhats. Much less that this perverted, skull-joke skeleton would be the long awaited musician. Luffy was right, the crew simply isn't complete without a musician. His entire concept is great.
I loved his introduction, and his past is easily one of the best out of all the strawhats. The tale itself was really sad, but what hit the nail was the surprising connection to Laboon. Nobody expected that and it gave everything a sense of nostalgia. Now, every time I read Laboon's introduction it feels so much stronger. Brook is also the only strawhat who has actually been part of another good pirate crew, and aside from perhaps Franky his flashback is the only one that took place in his adult years - it was nice with something different.
Other than that, I feel that his devil fruit is one of the more "out there" fruits. Its a bit different from the usual, which feels strange in this universe. Also, YOHOHOHO!
Loathe A serious lack of screentime. Granted, he is the newest member, but he still feels a bit… out of place. He hasn't had his shining moments or big fight.
The skulljokes and pervertedness can get a bit annoying at times.
Pre time-skip, his fighting style felt a bit underwhelming. He will always be overshadowed as a swordsman thanks to Zoro. So him fully exploring his devil fruit after the time skip was a welcome change.
And lastly, It feels like his age could be used more in the story. How were the seas and the world when he sailed them?
4/5
Love: Binks' Sake. Greatest thing ever. Also skull/skeleton/dead jokes. His yohohoho. His new chill style of fighting (pun intended). He's a musician.
Loathe: I want to see more moments with Zoro.
5/5. I love Brooke. In fact, I don't dislike a single SH so potential new additions always scare me because I become afraid that they will be "the one". But Brook did not fail xD
Looks like Doflamingo will be dethroned, at least so far.
Love: His afro, that he's overlooked by enemies who think he's dead, that he's the musician that Luffy wanted since the beginning.
Hate: He still doesn't feel well integrated to the strawhats. His timeskip destination makes the least sense, and turned out for the good by pure chance. Kuma could have sent him to Reverse Mountain for that matter, since that's where Brook actually wanted to go. His fighting style is not interesting.
3/5, my least favorite strawhat (but I hope he gets better in the future).
Well, forget it…
Love: Everything about him from the afro to the skull jokes. The guy hasn't talked to people in decades. I can understand him making silly puns. I also like how he's improved his DF powers. It's kinda cool how he distracts people by singing while silently slicing them and doing the "insert sword into sheath" bit.
Loathe: That he has the least character development of all the Straw Hats. Also, he hasn't had a chance to shine. He was kicking zombie ass in Thriller Bark, but now he's been more in the "I'm scared" reaction group with Chopper, Nami, and Usopp.
4.5/5
Love: Everything about his character. His design (at least the old one, not quite fond of the current one), his jokes - be the skull ones or the vulgar gentleman ones -, Binks' Sake, his personality as a whole. I used to not like his fighting style, but now he found out how to properly use the Yomi Yomi no Mi, even that I like. He is one of my favorite characters in One Piece, makes me cry every time I read the "Trio, duet, solo" part of his flashback and makes me genuinely laugh every single time I read through Thriller Bark. He is a light character that is simply pleasant to read at any time.
Loathe: Him as a Straw Hat.
During Thriller Bark, I couldn't wait for him to finally join, but once he did… he simply doesn't belong there. At least not yet.
At this moment, he doesn't have his own place in the crew scenes, he still lack a single interesting interaction with any other crew member, most of the time he is simply drawn in the background dancing so we don't forget he is there. Oda apparently doesn't know yet how to merge him with the crew and that makes Brook always look out of place - or like the guy who is always going out with that group of friends but isn't really one of the guys.
I seriously hope Oda will focus more on him on the following arcs, not simply for screen time or getting fights, but to establish his place among the Straw Hats. As things are now, though, as much as I love him as a character, I think his is really expendable as a Straw Hat Pirate.
4/5 (loses 0.5 for his current lack of purpose)
Love: He's an he's a gentleman pirate musician turned insane skeleton rockstar – needless to say, he's very fun to watch in almost every scene and can be quite unpredictably outrageous at times. He plays off the Strawhats extremely well and livens up the majority of the scenes he's in, especially in the way he can be cultured and knowledgeable while segue the cast into ludicrous topics and reactions. I don't care what anyone else says, those cheesy, partially deadpan "skull jokes" punchlines never get old! The same with his perverted behavior ("May I have a look at your panties?"). Unlike Sanji whose more recent lechery never quite fit his style, it works with Brook. We're talking about a man who experienced death and spent over 50 years by himself drifting at sea on a derelict vessel, passing his time singing sea shanties and perfecting the art of making perpendicular angles with his body all the while not meeting a single living soul (save Moria's crew). Of course he's going to be a little unhinged and tactless at times (to put it mildly).
Sure, he has a serious side and several surprisingly touching scenes (mostly surrounding Thriller Bark) but that seemed more of a counter balance to his currently strange behavior, to help him be at least remotely sympathetic and multidimensional that the crew could believably trust with their lives. Heck, he was technically hired by Luffy to be the crew's entertainment.
Loathe: Not enough Brook post-Thriller Bark. He has the unfortunate circumstance of being a background character through much of the latter part of the series, although it picked up slightly after the timeskip – until he dropped off midway from the Dressrosa arc entirely. A woeful squandering of potential so far.
5 yohohohoho's out of 5
Love: motha-freakin Soul King..craziest skeleton rockstar. His craziness makes him so much cooler(pun intended). Pirates gotta sing and Brook is that musician Luffy wanted since the beginning of his journey. His bad table manners, skull jokes, and afro..all good stuff.
loved how Luffy and Brook instantly had a connection. He is a very energetic 90 year old corpse which is funny and interesting on its own. He was literally an old school musician and after the time skip became Soul King… I liked his Soul Solid upgrade. His "Death isn't an apology" line was one of the golden moments in One Piece for me.
Loath: Brook's lack of screen time.
5/5
Love: How he managed to stay cheerful and high in spirits for almost 50 years. His backstory is one of the more tragic ones amongst the Strawhats, and his personality has evolved to cope with the loneliness and depression after reviving. Having died once before meant he understands the true value of life, and it's clearly evident from the way he bawled when he realised Laboon was still alive and waiting. This was a man who was ready to live down a life of regrets and a broken promise, but found hope in the Strawhats. I can't help but love his background.
Loathe: At the moment, his interactions with the other Strawhats are nothing but skull jokes and panties. While the entire crew has suffered from Flanderization to some extent, Brook is the most heavily affected because he hasn't had the proper time or opportunity to fully establish himself.
3.5/5
Brook: I'm getting chills over you're expectations on me guys, Oh wait I don't have skin, Yohohohoho!
Love: His devotion to the crew, promises and Luffy as his captain, its been shown that he will go to any extent in order to protect his friends despite of being with them for no more than 1 arc at that time on the story, how he never forgot about Laboon and the promise that he and his past crew made to a young Laboon 50 years ago.
Hate: Knowledge, I understand that he was trapped in the Florian Triangle for 50 years or so, but he should have some sort of knowledge/rumors about the past that we still don't know and might be important but that's all up to Oda I guess also how he spent 50 years doing nothing on a ship, he have all the time in the world but he was just being Brook.
3.5
@Mr.:

45 degrees!!!
Wait… Brook ain't no square. 60 degrees!!!
Love: Got an afro, can run on water, is a perv, can sing (if I recall correctly, Luffy kept asking for a musician), great backstory, can do a skull joke.
Loathe: I don't think he mixes well with other SH yet. I don't really see him sharing his thoughts with other crew members. I also think he has a potential to be very wise with historical stuff but no…he's kinda dumb.
4/5
Love: He was great during TB
Loathe: He has barely developed or contributed anything to the series since then
2.5/5. But i cant say that he is my least favourite SH.
Love: even though he is the most recent Strawhat, I find him to be one of the most enjoyable and entertaining to watch. The positive attitude he has after everything he has been through is incredibly admirable, especially the dream he has held onto for 50+ years. And those skull jokes of his….I love them, how unbelievably amusing.
His.Afro.Is.Amazing.
Loathe: not enough music!
5/5 for our fun-loving skeleton.
Love: Almost everything. The fencing, the afro, the skull jokes, the ability to freeze things because of his fruit, his tremendous speed.
Loathe: Despite being probably equal to Robin and thus not much below Franky, he is shown crying and getting scared all the time. Nami and Usopp have low confidence in their abilities because they are weaker than the others. But Brook (and Chopper as well) are fruit users and have various means of fighting. It dosn't click right with them.
4.5/5 because really, he should fight more and get more badass moments.
Love: My second favorite character in One piece second only to Luffy. Brook is an incredible man and has an incredible backstory. This is a man who survived more than fifty years of crushing loneliness alone in the sea, when Luffy asks him to join the crew without a second thought and he immediately accepts, you only appreciate the power of that scene once you learn his story and how this man was barely held it together for all this years that he would immediately go for the first person who offered him companionship. Then there's his death isn't an apology speech that just perfectly shows you who Brook is.
I'd like to believe that Brook's power of music was created during those lonely days, when he had to create music that was more or less alive. That would offer him an escape from all of it. Brook has the potential to be one of the most compelling characters in One piece although I have to admit that going deep into his character wouldn't fit into One piece's theme.
Loath:The rockstar thing. I liked the elderly, stately gentleman with his walking cane and violin. The rockstar thing just makes him look lesser in a way, like Luffy without his hat.
5/5:
Missed Crocodile.
What I love about Brook - His very character. His initial design, you know… being a skeleton and all. First, appearing from what it appears to be a ghost ship and here he comes while drinking a tea. I really liked his outfit that time - really throwing a pirate vibe, though, indirectly since we all know its because he died and stuff. His back story, for me, the saddest among the strawhats. Given their time together as crewmates then dying together but gets resurrected, clean their bodies then spend half a century alone... As crew member, as their musician, I like him albeit his lack of deep interaction with the rest of the crew given his short amount of time with them. His skull jokes never gets old so does his asking-your-panty quirk. Yohohoho!
What I loathe about Brook - His current design. I'm not fond of where he headed with his fashion sense. I really liked his dark and gloomy aura mainly because he's a skeleton but with his colorful attire... not so much though it could be symbolizing that he has moved on from what happened to him in the past and is now with the colorful strawhats. Still... i don't like the green shark guitar, the orange thingy around his neck and that... that hat. Though he's given a good amount of interaction with the rest of the crew, I sometimes feel he's still an outsider but its more of how Oda handle the pace of the story.
4/5 for me. Currently second best Strawhat for me.
Brook
Love: Being a skeleton, his swordsman techniques, even if they are inferior to Zoro's. Fighting with music, it's interesting. His backstory, and his motivation. Him being older than most characters in OP
Hate: He was overshadowed by Ryuuma duing TB, which completely killed the mood for me. I mean, in Zoro's arc, Zoro was a badass. Nami's arc, she stood her ground. Even Usopp managed to do something, and let's not talk about Franky. However, Brook got completely annihilated by Ryuuma, who was technically a corpse. So even a corpse was stronger with his own techniques than Brook. He needed to be saved by Zoro, who is the superior swordsman, but that was totally uncool for some reason. Brook should've proved himself fighting with sword+music. Music, it's cool, but again, he was overshadowed by Apoo. He was 10 times cooler fighting with music than Brook himself. I feel like that he could've been a cool hybrid character, yet drew the short end of both sticks. I hate his "Rockstar" design, totally unfitting. I don't have a problem with his role in the crew, but I want to see him helping the crew with songs. I mean, if you can damage people with songs, why can't you buff them? (Like Sanji's okama recipes, which was also never explored, sadly). I want to see Brook as a "bard", but he's just not there. I hope he can improve in the future, until then:
2/5, least favourite currently
Brook
Love : 45 degree, i mean nothing but still we all agree :) His afro is just awesome! It gives the character a real weakness because bleeding mean nothing, just bone breaking! Or maybe a future awesome skeleton-moment ;) It's fun to see him drink milk (good children advise haha). He was part of an extremely cool saga, Thriller Back was a great Hunted house saga every actor was at their right place.
Loathe : He always seem weak when it count… He was a captain ! maybe more the right hand but still he should have been a bit stronger... His attacks are starting to repeat even if in Thriller bark there seem to be way more.
So he is a really funny character, he got his epic moments, we got a skeleton in the crew! but we would always want a bit more. When will his light weight be useful in a fight, when will we have more than just one attack from him for a fight... I love Brook but i think i'll have to be patient before he show us more.
4/5
Love: Much like Bon Clay and Franky, he's one of those characters that represent Oda's style in a nutshell. A quirky weirdo with an interesting design (gentlemen/rockstar skeleton) that has no shortage of ass-kicking moments and emotional moments, where they're sobbing like a baby/etc. Plus, I have a fondness for skeletons in general.
Loathe: Uh…..nothing. I actually think he's improved over the timeskip.
5/5
Yohohohoho, it's time for one of my favourite SH's!
Love : His entire design, both pre and post timeskip. His epitaphs. His fighting style. His skele-jokes. His perversions. I could go on.
Loathe : His sometimes cowardly attitude. Brook should be firmly competing with both Franky and Robin for 4th strongest crew member, a solid part of the middle trio.
Rating : 5/5

You know what? That makes 2 of us. Not only because he improved his music techniques, because he uses the fruit quite cleverly to the point of making it quite powerful, because he already has 2 wins under his belt (Zeo + Jora, the last one being quite a clever one), or even that he became the Soul King. It's the fact that he's actualy had some great, great moments.
His speech against Zeo was of course awesome, but I also really like how, even if it was a small moment in retrospect, he saved Luffy and co. against the lake bandits, all the while proving he's a full fledged Straw Hat and getting angry at anyone who would try and harm the man that saved him from 50 years of solitude. Hell, even when Momonosuke asked him to "entertain him", he answered "I only obey my captains orders".
I don't know, I feel like he's one of the characters that improved the most post time skip. Both in feats, in looks, in fighting style, in loyalty to his captain and his crew, usefulness (he got free action during PH because they thought he was a corpse, he defeated Jora when they were utterly screwed and near-killed. . .).
Adding to all the positive things people already covered about him, I can't add any negative as of now.
Score: 4,5/5.
Love: His flashback/story. When I saw Brook's flashback coupled with the song in the anime I definitely teared up and wanted him to join the crew even more than before.
Hate: I might get a lot of hate for this but sometimes his bone jokes aren't very humerus…

Here, take my hate. You can have it.
But to be honest, while I do like his skull jokes, I never get his music-related ones. Like: "Oh, we are under the sea, I will make a song about it. We are under the seeeea ♫". I just keep looking at the page trying to figure out what was supposed to be funny about it, but maybe it's just me, maybe it's a joke that only makes sense in japanese…

I see what you did there… :ninja:
Yohohohohohoo!
Man I wanna do a 16+ joke but I already have a warning and getting ban for this will be pointless. I hate the 13+
I get that One piece is an action manga and stuff but it kind of sucks how characters are purely judged by their fighting skills when they are soo much more than that.

Agreed and Oda is doing the same for Franky now and I think this will be his new tactic. Concentrate on one of the lesser defined Straw hats more per arc so most probably next arc we either get more of Chopper or Robin.
Love: Brook is my favourite Strawhat alongside Franky. He's quirky and he has a great design, but what appeals to me the most is his personality. The fact he spent 50 years completely alone only to keep his promise to Laboon shows just how faithful he is, both to it and to his crew as he's shown since he joined the Strawhats, and that's one of the things I like the most about him, his sense of loyalty and how grateful he is to Luffy. His story with Laboon is simply beautiful and pure One Piece, he had a great character arc.
And I think after the timeskip he's been even better. His speeches to Brownbeard and Zeo were great, and Oda is doing him justice. Of course I also like his interactions with the whole crew, he always manages to get a smile out of me.
Loathe: Nothing, I don't think he has any blatant flaws.
5/5
Love: Depth. When Brook first joined it almost felt like humouring Oda. Visually cool but more a collection of joke tics than a character. But that all changed for me during Fishman Island when Brook made his speech about death and how stupid those who chase it were. He came into focus as someone who may have gone a little mad during his 50 years of isolation but was as human and motivated as everyone of Luffy's collection of maniacs.
Loathe: Not enough of this. The panty and bone jokes are still the majority of his portrayal. I don't mind it, but I really enjoy the serious side of the Strawhats grandfather figure more.
4/5.
