Hi, I have been lurking here for a few years now and i think this is a good time make my first post since you guys are talking about football/soccer(huge fan)
First of all, i really like Jinbei but i don't think he will be joining the crew so i wont have him in my team. Now in football/soccer the goal is to protect your goal(no pun) and score on your opponent's goal(at a glance, it is a lot more complex if you look into it) and i think that in OP it is like a ship or base. Now to my team…
Goalkeeper: Franky, i think he fits this perfectly because like i said, the goal corresponds to the ship and Franky being the shipwright and taking care of the ship is a lot like a goalkeeper protecting his goal.
Center backs: Monster Chopper and a new crewmember. CB's are usually tall and strong, they are the last defensive line and i think Monster Chopper fits this category nicely like someone had already pointed out. Other than Chopper i don't think he have someone in the crew currently that fits here.
Full backs: Brook and a new crewmember. Full backs are well rounded, they attack and defend and are good at adjusting to different situations. They usally overlap and linkup with the wingers and i think that resembles Brook, he could for example support Zoro since they are both swordsmen(Zoro is one of the wingers) And then i think a new crewmate would be the other full back, someone who specializes in hand to hand combat that would compliment Sanji since i have him as the other winger(I would love a martial arts girl with a chinese theme, maybe from the happo navy :P)
Midfielders: Robin, Nami and Usopp. Midfielder role's can vary alot, a simple description would be that they are the ones that pull the strings and control the game(referred to as Maestro's). They are often intelligent and in a battlefield they would be the strategists and i think that Robin, Nami and Usopp are the most intelligent members. There is usually one midfielder that is a more defensive that covers a lot of ground and i think that Usopp would fit here with his plants.
Wingers: Zoro and Sanji. Whenever there is a fight, M3 are the main attack force that charges in first and that resembels how the attackers run at the other team in football/soccer.
Striker: Luffy, like i said M3 always charge in but luffy is always first and he has sanji and zoro by his side just like in football the ST is always at the lead with the wingers on his side and he is the one that strikes(again no pun) down the main enemy.

Taking your argument at face value, substitutes do not form a part of the official lineup. Only eleven players can play at a time on the pitch. Do you see three members of the crew swapping out with three others in the middle of an arc?
See, the whole thing with Oda loving football so the Strawhats would have eleven crew-members is just speculation. What we have right now is what you've said: the quote from Luffy from chapter one which says that he hopes to find at least 10 more members.
That said, at this point of time it is difficult envisioning Luffy having more than one more new crew-member. The basic reasoning is that the new crew-members wouldn't have enough time to develop a rapport with the crew and share common experiences. The Strawhats have gone through one big moment as a crew (the splitting apart at Sabaody and the timeskip), and even Jinbe (who is locked on in the eyes of almost everyone as the next Strawhat) also shared a part of that experience through Luffy.
I will stick to using soccer references for the sake of the topic. Just because you get substituted doesn't mean you are out of the team. I see it more of a newer crewmate will get more "playing time" then ONE current member. That member could be "benched" as in sick, guarding the ship, hurt, doing an offscreen important task, etc… and that would apply for however many more than 11 members they get.
And wouldn't the new member(s) not name Jinbe feel left out of the split and 2 year time skip anyways be it 3 more crewmates or only 1? You will have AT LEAST 1 odd man/woman out going by the soccer team argument of max crewmates who didn't go through that "bonding" moment. Not sure how you bond through an experience you don't actually spend together. I mean...who else could you add that had something to do with the split that would make sense?
They are not turning down help because they want to have a football team. That entire concept is a literary theme, a writing device used at the discretion of the author of the manga.

Jewelry Bonney wasn't strong enough to be on his crew. And aren't they talking about adding Kuzan…or is he considered one of the 10 captains? Most teams nowadays play 3 forwards, 3 midfielders and 4 defenders (two full backs and two center-backs) and one goalkeeper, of course. Your team is way too attack minded, with four forwards and an attacking midfielder!

Except that substitutions in soccer aren't rolling subs. Once you're out of the pitch, you stay out.
Still keeping with the soccer analogy, there is usually a pool of 5/7 (12 in international tournaments) subs out of which the manager gets to choose 3 in a game. So technically, Luffy would have a crew of 23, out of which 11 would disembark on any island. Out of the remaining 12, only 3 would be allowed to sub for any other 3 members of the crew, who'll promptly get on the ship and disappear for the rest of the arc. Oh, and Rayleigh will join the crew as their manager, so that he can send out the team which is physically fresh and tactically suited for the next boss.

Exactly. This is an issue with just one extra member. But we can trust Oda to handle one extra crew-member and the ensuing dynamics carefully. Handling three more? Especially when we're approaching the end of the manga? That's beyond even him, mate.

They're talking about trusting him, not adding him to the crew. Personally I don't think Kuzan is on Teach's crew. He's more of a freelancer allied with the Blackbeard Pirates for now.

Usopp and Nami have no strength to be in the defense line, they would be dribbled over and over and over, they're the "unpredictability" of the team and must be in the midfield to trigger the action.

Soccer in Australia too - All countries have their local variants of "Football" so calling it that causes confusion - Even in countries where Soccer is football they still know what Soccer is. Always better to call it Soccer.
I mean Japan is Nippon but here we are on a website dedicated to a Japanese manga and we don't use its actual name - we call it by its name recognised worldwide.
I'm from Europe, but I'd rather call it soccer on international forum, since soccer is always soccer, football can have 2 meanings.
Also this is soccer/football in japanese: サッカー (sakkaa). So it's definately taken from 'soccer' and japanesed (if there's a word like that :D)

I posted this theory on MangaFox thought I'd share it with you guys. Its one of my crazy theories for discussion sake and basically exploring the idea of how many straw hats there might be. Story narrative tells us that Luffy wants at least 10 nakama. This doesn't limit him to just 10. We could get 4 more in the New World giving Luffy 12 crew members in total..so straw hats total would be 13 including Luffy.
Going Merry had 6-7 people on it comfortably. The crew also pointed out that Thousand Sunny was approximately twice the size of Going Merry. CH 436 pg 6 Zoro is the one who points out the Sunny/Merry size comparison.

Fibonacci Sequence Theory.
! If Luffy gets 4 members in the New World there will be a total of 13 straw hat pirates. The number 13 is part the Fibonacci Sequence. Plants are known to follow the Fibonacci sequence pattern to allow them to pack as many seeds as possible. The interesting thing about the Fibonacci numbers is if you divide any of the Fibonacci numbers by the one before it in the sequence, especially the larger ones you get the same number. 1.618 this number is known as the Golden Ratio. There is a whole other set of patterns in nature that are based on the Golden Rectangle. The Rectangle's side lengths are Fibonacci numbers. It is hard to explain but I think Oda is using the Fibonacci numbers. The number of crew members could be 13…and it might not be a coincidence why Oda has the SHP total member count be a Fibonacci number that can be the Golden ratio.

Just saying I'm kind sick of every single new female character automatically being considered a potential Straw Hat. We've had Marguerite, Caime, Perona, Boney, Shirahoshi, Hancock, Monet, Baby 5, Rebecca, that 3 eyed girl from one panel in FI and Viola all speculated as being future Straw Hat's from their first appearance when we knew literally nothing about them. It's kind of funny that we want a new female member this badly.
I share the enthusiasm for this topic though but I look at each candidate with a criteria. New Straw Hats need:
a dream, a position on the crew, a unique hair color (unless it's black), a unique first letter of their forename (we have L,Z,N,U,S,C,R,F and B already), a reason to join, a tragic flashback, a mentor, and they have to have allot of interaction with Luffy. Additionally they are also likely to be of another race like a Fishman or Giant as if you think about each member is very unique so there is thus allot of diversity in the crew. It's also likely that they have a unique fighting style or Devil Fruit power and are likely to use an "element" that we don't have yet (We have ice,fire,earth,lightning and plants so far).
Regarding personality there has to be a balance in the Crew as recently we have had Brook join who is more silly as a result some characters like Franky are a little more serious, which tells me that our next character is likely to be a more serious character that can act as a comedic foil to the silly members (On the more serious side we have Zoro,Nami and Robin) and (In the middle we have Sanji and Franky) and (On the more silly side we have Luffy, Ussop, Chopper and Brook) So one more serious character is seemingly needed, in the current arc Law fills in as the extra serious character but I don't think he'll join since, He's a doctor and his name starts with an L.
The final thing that'd have to be considered is strength of the new Straw Hat. We can clearly break the crew down into 3 groups (Luffy, Zoro and Sanji are the "warriors" of the group they are all really strong and eager to fight), (Brook, Robin and Franky are in the middle, they are all incredibly strong but less so than the other three and are less competitive) and (Chopper, Ussop and Nami who are still strong but not as strong as the others but that's OK they are not worthless since their talents are mainly outside the realm of fighting and also the main thing that holds them back is more there attitude or fear than anything else as when they fight they are formidable and are good tacticians).
In my opinion the next member is likely to be very strong but not as competitive as Luffy, Zoro or Sanji. So who do I think it'll be well Rebecca fills allot of the criteria but it's still not enough for me to be sure, I am sure however that Jinbei will and should join the crew eventually as he is serious, is water elemental, has had a ton of interaction with Luffy has a mentor and wants to join, not to mention his name starts with a J.
Oh yeah two more things I'd like to point out is that Luffy said around 10 members would be good in chapter 1 not exactly 10 and Luffy has changed his mind before, so the limit could be around 15 members (which is cool if you consider Vivi and Karue members like me). Also the age of the character is unimportant as Brook is 90 and Franky is 38. Ultimately all the members are in their own ways rejects and they find a place to truly belong in the crew. And that's all I have to say about it for now I hope this post helps your speculating let me know if you agree or disagree with me, it's always fun to speculate

So far the way Oda has been telling the story and how previous Nakama have joined there have been some patterns I would like to point out.
Again these are theories I have posted on Mangafox.
Each segment of Luffy's journey there have been 4 characters who have been recruited. Assuming Oda has intended (4 recruits = Zoro/Nami/Usopp/Sanji)East Blue, (4 recruits = Chopper/Robin/Franky/Brook)Paradise, we might be able to speculate that 4 more people will join during the New World.
Now looking at each segment notice how there is a specific pattern when it comes to what 4 types of crew member join.
Zoro = Swordsmen
Nami = Female
Usopp = Weakling
Sanji = Brawler
Similar type of members join in paradise but the only thing that remains the same is…The female is always second to join and the Brawler seems to join around the same time the female re joins.
Chopper = Weakling
Robin = Female
Franky = Brawler
Brook = Swordsmen
Notice how when the crew was going to pick up Sanji in EB..Nami leaves the crew. Luffy got Sanji and later the entire crew fought in Arlong Park to get Nami back.
Similar pattern is used in Paradise. SHP enter Water 7 where we meet Franky..Robin leaves the crew. entire crew fought in EL to get Robin back, and then Franky joined.
In the New World I believe that Jinbe is the Brawler type person who will join. So around the time Jinbe is joining we will most likely see our female candidate. I am not speaking in absolutes and the pattern I am talking about is very vague itself..borderline autistic. This is just a speculation from the manga and the way Oda has had previous crew members join.
Another thing to notice is the crew member's heights..especially in Paradise. Chopper was the 5th person to join and in his reindeer form he is approximately 5 ft tall. Robin was the 6th person to join and she is about 6 ft tall. Franky was the 7th person to join and he is about 7 ft tall. Brook was the 8th person to join and he is about 8 ft tall. As you can see this pattern starts looking less random when we see Jinbe who is about 9 ft tall get an invitation during FI. Jinbe can possibly join as the 9th person.
EB = Swordsmen(Zoro) joined first, but in Paradise = the 4th person to join was the Swordsmen(Brook)
EB/Paradise the female(Nami/Robin) joined second.
EB the Weakling(Usopp) joined 3rd, but in Paradise = the first person to join was the Weakling(Chopper)
EB the Brawler(Sanji) joined as the 4th person, but in Paradise = the 3rd person to join was the Brawler(Franky)
Looking at the pattern you can see that the order of the Swordsmen/Weakling/Brawler doesn't repeat. Meaning if the Swordsmen joined first in EB and last in Paradise then the Swordsmen will most likely join as the 3rd person in the New World. Since the Female is always second.
Following this autistic train of thought the Brawler would be the first to join in the NW. Female would be second and would join around the same time the Brawler joins. Swordsmen would be third, and the Weakling would be the last SH.
IMHO IF we get a swordsmen we will most likely have his official invitation in Wano Country. Right now I am thinking Kinemon could be that Swordsmen.
With Big Mam lurking around Sunny I wouldn't be surprised if Jinbe's official joining arc gets started soon and following that the female can join. Since Wano Country is lined up already, and Kin is traveling with the crew he could end up getting an invitation at the end of Wano Country.
There haven't been many characters who travel with the crew and are capable of fighting along side the crew...and don't get an invitation. whether or not Kin accepts the invitation is a different story.

I think that the Blackbeard pirates need him more than the strawhats. But I aggree, if Viola is there to see what is going on in an island even before Luffy gets hyped and Usopp gets scared, where is the adventure spirit? But I do like her as character and I hope she will not be a burden in the future fights inside the palace.

They can take both in or he can quickly teach viola the dark arts of look looking good oh wait she already knows lol.
Its not a pattern if in order to make it work you have to cut out the main character, ignore Vivi and Carue, and shuffle the order around of the "sets" you've made that don't line up anyway.
Oda isn't writing a pattern. He's writing an organic story and isn't going to be hamstrung by some vauge idea of repetition that doesn't even make sense.
Luffy = has a scar on the left
Zoro = has a scar on the left
Nami = has a tatoo on the left
Usopp = has no distinguishing feature on the left
Sanji = has his hair parted/one eye showing on the left
Chopper = Has a broken horn on the left
Robin = has no distinguishing feature on the left
Franky = has no distinguishing feature on the left
Brook = has a skull crack on the right!
Jinbe = has a scar on the left
What can this patern possibly mean?!? Obviously it a pattern of 3 lefts, 1 nothing, 2 lefts, 2 nothings, 1 right, 1 left! Almost had something if not for Brook! But if you account for the fact Zoro didn't used to have a scar its 1 left, 1 none, 2 lefts, 2 none, 1 right, 1 left! Thats a much more even pattern!
But hey, Sabo is clearly scarred on his left, so maybe he'll be next to join!
