Mmmh that was a different kind of trailer than I expected. Very low key on showing action(compared to most). But I really like that.
Hoping all the character interacting will feel satisfying instead of convoluted and confusing. But I think there's some trust to be had in Singer.
Singer said in a Twitter Q&A yesterday that they're still working on VFX, so that's why it's a character trailer.
But in all seriousness
I'm glad that there still is a real mandarin
Sing hallelujah!
You have to laugh though, as this positively reeks of "Oh crap, the fans are PISSED. We have to do something or they'll burn down HQ. Qucik! Put together something to appease them!"
Well I'm glad to see Marvel isn't done with Ben Kingsley. I had always thought they could still use Ben Kingsley and the Mandarin after Iron Man 3. These were my thoughts at the time after seeing the movie in May. Even though my predictions on Avengers 2 and Phase 2 probably won't pan out since we now know the villain will be Ultron, I still think they could do what I thought with Ben Kingsley and the Mandarin:
So I saw the film on Thursday and decided to wait a few days and reflect before commenting. First off I really liked the movie and I thought it's main focus was more about Tony's relationship with people and how he's changed from the narcissist in the first movie to caring more about others post-Avengers.
I had mix thoughts on the Mandarin, but after reflecting I also looked up some past events involving the Mandarin. I can see a possibility where there could be more to the choice they made with the Mandarin involving the overall plan for Phase 2.
Here are my thoughts on the Mandarin and Phase 2: (my theory on Phase 2 is somewhat long)
! First, my thoughts on the Mandarin:
! I liked the twist. When Tony held the Mandarin at gunpoint, for the first minute I actually thought the Mandarin was just acting and was going to go "Just kidding! Surprise Mother F#@ker!" and beat the crap out of Iron Man. While I though the twist was hilarious, in the back of my mind I was slightly saddened. It's one thing if the twist was done with a lesser Iron Man villain, but this is Iron Man's arch-nemesis. Are they really going to waste him (and Ben Kingsley) on a twist like this? That really bugged me. One thing that did stick out to me though is that the Mandarin was the only villain that did not die, they only took him away in cuffs. I don't think they are quite done with the Mandarin.
! Now how do I think this could work out in Phase 2:
! Please bear with me now, there's a lot I have on my mind about it and I will be making some assumptions too. I'll try to back up this theory the best I can. First off let's assume Marvel has Phase 2 more planned out than Phase 1. Since Marvel already has a baseline structure for the cinematic universe, they're probably already sowing the seeds for Avengers 2 through each movie. Now let's assume Marvel and Joss want to save Thanos for Avengers 3. Joss hinted at this in an interview recently. http://screenrant.com/the-avengers-3-thanos-joss-whedon/ Notice Joss said, "Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful he is not someone you can just try out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on…__The thing about The Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment." The key word is people. This implies that there could be multiple villains. What would be a big enough threat for the Avengers? The Masters of Evil.
! Now here's where the Mandarin plays in. Let's say the Feds let Ben Kingsley character go. He's still just a drug addict. He stumble upon the alien ship with the actual 10 Rings. Upon obtaining the rings and with the combo of the drugs he goes crazy and believes himself to be the Mandarin, the role he once played is now his reality. Now assuming the Thor and Captain America movies build up other villains and previous villains return (Loki of course), the Mandarin could form the Masters of Evil.
! Now you're perhaps thinking that while the Masters of Evil are a big threat, the Avengers fought off a whole army of space aliens in the first movie. It's not big enough, besides we would see it coming. I would agree with you 100%. So there would have to be something else. Something to push it over the top and make the Avengers feel doomed and hopeless. This is where the Mandarin comes in again. When looking up old events of the Mandarin I found a connection I didn't realize before. The origin of the 10 Rings. I already knew they were from an alien ship, but what I didn't pay attention to was which race of alien they were from, the Makluan. Now why are the Makluan important? Well, one very famous villain and huge threat which the Avengers have fought is a Makluan. Fin Fang Foom.
! http://marvel.com/universe/Mandarin & http://marvel.com/universe/Fin_Fang_Foom
! This would be the thing no one would see coming because of the misdirection of just the Masters of Evil. It would work out too since the Mandarin and Fin Fang Foom have teamed up together in the comics in the past. The Masters of Evil summon Fin Fang Foom and all hell breaks loose.
! Something like this would be amazing if they could pull it off. I think this is something that could be plausibly done. Please feel free to let me know what you think of the theory. I would want to see Phase 2 play out like this. It would blow my mind.
If the Mandarin turns out to be someone entirely different, I think that could workout fine too. I'm really interested to see what they will do with him and how the Mandarin character will progress.
One can only hope . . . . .
I really do think that Ben Kingsley would play an awesome "real" Mandarin, so I hope that maybe his character finds the rings and somehow transforms into the real Mandarin, or something like that. He's too good of an actor to waste on a role like the one he was given.
The Mandarin movie will turn out to be Trevor's big screen debut. After the credits it turns out the Avengers were watching it the whole time.

Man, that's a good twist - but not the kind that pleases fans… don't give them ideas!!!!
I'd rather watch a Trevor movie than a dumb Mandarin movie because Marvel needs to please their butthurt fans. We all know how well that went when they brought back Coulson and subsequently ruined him.
Do we talk about the SHIELD tv series here, or does it have it's own thread? Just gotta say I love Coulson

We've had some mixed emotions on it.
If he wasn't supposed to look and sound like somebody else, what was the point of getting Trevor plastic surgery on top of everything else? The makeup, weird camera angles, and voice should have kept people from realizing who he really was without having to go that far.
Question: Who is Trevor?
aint one one seen thor 2 well i did last night and it was very good i give it 3rd best film in marvel from avengers being first and ironman 1 being second.
go watch it 8/10
Thor 2 is out already? God damn this year is flying.
Saw the movie yesterday. Still trying to process the awesome. I think it might have outdid Iron Man 3 in how fucking awesome it was making it my new number 2. Just the visuals alone were amazingly beautiful, a strong, focused story (albeit with a number of big plotholes here and there), a great cast (with the exception of Natalie Portman who was awful as expected), some great twists and lots and lots of feels. Also it has the best ending of the entire franchise hands down. Just amazing. Marvel is really raising the bar with every new film. I can't wait for Captain America 2 which is based on an already really strong story? Fucking hyped.
The title of this thread beckoned me here and I'm sad to see it's not about an action movie starring me at all.
I saw Thor 2. I fell asleep.

It was super bland.
To be fair, there are so many people, there are bound to be a different opinions.
Some for, some against a movie.
No matter what one's personal view is, the person is allowed to have it.
Thor 2 opens November 8th here in the US. But obviously screenings are starting. So I'll put out the obvious call right now:

Plus a Defenders crossover mini-series.
Hopefully no Jeph Loeb influence on this one and Netflix' focus on binge watching, older skewing demo and serialized storytelling might make Marvel TV finally decide to do away with episodic storytelling for the whole family.
It's sad no one can get the rights to Spiderman back to Marvel - I think that all these developments would be so much better with Spidey.

Would cost way too much money to be worth it. Besides if they got Spiderman back, he would be going to the big screen and not a live action tv series.
I'm fine with them not having Spider-Man, the Marvel Universe is starting to get very crowded as it is for mainstream audiences.
Yeah, the reason they're doing these as TV shows is because they're too unpopular to succeed as movies (don't ask me why Daredevil would do worse than GotG, Inhumans or Ant-Man), though they might get movies if their shows are very succesful.

I don't understand why there wouldn't be Loeb influence since he is the head of the TV department over there.
Thor 2 was fine a little too much comedy but I'm satisfy until Cap 2.
! Loki is that dude MVP of the movie glad they didn't kill him off and he still got what he wanted which was great.
The Cap cameo was nice thank the man above^^^^
First half was ok loved the second half that last battle was epic IMO with them fighting in other realms.
Finally some GOTG with The Collector and I think our first confirmation of infinity stones.
Went to the midnight release, and I have to say I was thoroughly entertained, the super secret ending had me in stitches too~
Saw Thor 2. Was blown away beyond all reason.
-So much fell into place when they stopped focusing on boring old earth and just went hogwild in the universe tossing out races, places and imagery.
-Lots more of the warriors three which is just oh so good.
-less but more well-employed Loki, slightly too much comedy relief as some have mentioned but eh it's all good.
-Chris Hemsworth is still the definitive Thor as much as RDJ is Tony Stark.
-and best of all they employed so much of the marvel melodrama that i've longed for, with Brian Tyler's huge orchestra sound playing up all the huge emotions and slight over acting ( Or in Hopkins case chewing the scenery). God i love it so much.
Easily the best sequal out of all the marvel movies, and one of the best they've ever made
Loki is the best thing about the movie, he easily steals the show in most of his scenes and it also help he is the funniest in the movie.
The comedy in the movie is very hit or miss(mostly miss for me) the comedy felt it was ripped straight out of a sitcom, most of the human actors and scenes involving them are bad or just meh.
The villain is very nonexistence in this movie, he himself barely does anything and he's not all that intimidating.
Still worth a watch though.
I'm glad the critics have sort of destroyed this film. It was really not good and maybe Marvel Studios will finally try a different formula.

Not gonna just try and shut you down cause I know you are waiting for someone to call you out on this, but other than it being bland to you, what else made it not good in your eyes? Just curious…

True but his right hand man was Adabesi from OZ so how can i be mad about that
[hide]Although i was kind of weirded out by how the Kursed in the intro was taken down by three no-names by tripping him, while the one who fought Thor was barely annoyed by Mjölnir. But eh that's the utmost of nitpicking [/hide]

I had the same problem.
! Think the worst bit of writing in the movie was the part where Natalie Portman just so happened to fall into the dimension with the supreme evil power with a prison that just so happened to be open.
But who cares? I can come up with several major plot holes off the top of my head, I still love the hell out of this movie.
Completely unrelated to Thor 2: Just give me Thanos… pls... Ultron is going to be quite bland and quite boring, I'm almost certain of it (because he is in the comics)... All he does is adapt and shoot lasers, and mind control people (which has already been done in The Avengers 1 with Loki's staff).

Throw them out. Could be fun to see if i missed any of them
Top of my head:
! Loki's death. How did he do that? Was it a really good illusion? The movie sure didn't present it like that. Did he just fake his death? Did Thor leave his body lying there?
! London is being destroyed and Thor cans till somehow get a train. Also why didn't he just fly?"
! Interdimensional javelins? What? It'd have been nice if these had been explained more. And how exactly where they the key to defeating the being powered by supreme darkness?"
But whatever, don't care. Love the movie.

It was a really DUMB movie (as in, moreso than the average blockbuster), every character not named Thor or Loki (and thus every actor who is much better at their job than Chris Hemsworth) got shafted big time and saddled with one-dimensional characters and the roflolmao jokes sucked any sort of gravitas right out of the movie.
This review nails all the dumbness in this movie (it's long and a little nitpicky, but there was a lot of dumb involved): http://sequart.org/magazine/32555/id-need-a-lobotomy-to-enjoy-thor-the-dark-world/
And that's just the story! Honestly, if this was a Transformers movie or a superhero movie by any other name, everyone would be shitting on it, but this is ~Marvel Studios~ where people for some reason decide that utterly mediocre action blockbuster is some kind of new level of greatness. "Turn your brain off and it'll be great!"

[hide]Well as far as i know Thor can't actually fly. He just swings his hammer and throws it while holding on to the strap
And he didn't have it with him at the time[/hide]
The movie is fun and entertaining with good character moments and some sweet action scenes. That's what I paid for and it did it very well. Does it have problems? Definitely. There's a ton of stupid, plot contrivances, things that make no sense, unbalanced comedy, Natalie Portman. But it did things right where it counted which is getting me invested in these characters succeeding in saving the day. So I'm not going to fret about birds not being freaked out about flying from the ground or why the aether shatters when its supposed to be intangible. They're superficial elements put in for the rule of cool and I'm fine with that. In terms of story structure, the movie was solidly written albeit a few missteps here and there(especiallythat terrible plot hole with Natalie Portman just happening to waltz into the lair of the super evil McGuffin). It's definitely not a mediocre action movie, quite the opposite, I've seen plenty of those this year (Man of Steel, Parker, Lone Ranger, Die Hard 5, World War Z, Pacific Rim, Elysium, After Earth, Star Trek 2), this movie was definitely not mediocre. it was fucking great.

! He could have just…waited till it came to him. Would have definitely taken less time than taking the train lol

Just wondering, but is there a comic based movie you liked that wasn't X-Men or Avengers? Because it seems like with every other Marvel movie, you just make a snarky comment about how "it sucks" to stir up some argument.
Also, I haven't seen the movie yet, so for all I really know, I could be inclined to agree.
[hide]If you ask me that reviewer complains about some odd things. Like complaining that the movie is bad because it's sticking to the source material ( making use of the dark elves), and how the portrayal of kingship isn't historically accurate for his taste ( i atleast guess that's what he's getting at? ) and that Thor rebels against his father's wishes ( again source material, should probably be taken up with Stan Lee ) and that there isn't enough moody drama and personal confrontation in this more lighthearted film.
In general the dude just seems to be bothered by admitedly silly comic book stuff. Like his point about why doesn't Thor try to kill the villain before he absorbs the power? Seems a little silly to make that a point of note. And that's about as far as i could muster to read, cause that shit goes on and on and on.[/hide]
