For old-times sake, I'm playing Dungeon Hack. This is a great game to play in the dark. No music, just monster sounds. The water level and the undead enemies really make the game a challenge. Xill's are still the same annoying a-holes as I remember them. Same with the Carrion Crawlers, Ghouls, Sheet Ghouls, Wraiths, Wights, Living Mucks, and the Cockatrice'.
What are you Playing?

I beat MGS2. Unlikeable protagonist and whiny love interest aside, it was a very enjoyable game. The bosses were generally better than in the original, but sadly fewer. I didn't know what to think of the ending, and the entire finale for that matter.
Now I'm playing the third game… And an early mission is kicking my ass already. It's making me wonder how I even beat the first two games.
-
Currently alternating between playing Fire Emblem Awakening with a male Avatar to collect more supports for my support log, Paper Mario Sticker Star to collect all the stickers and things, Super Scribblenaut and HarmoKnight to finish them.

@CCC:
Seconding La Mulana (I also first learned about it from Hiroy). Really amazing. The kind of game that makes you proud to have beaten and that you will go back to replay because the length and complexity makes it that engaging.
You finished it? Congrats! You were probably the first person I forwarded the game to that did.
Yes you are right. La Mulana is probably one the more unique experiences I've had in gaming. Mainly for that really powerful feeling you get when you finish it. It's strange. When you first enter the ruins on any play-through, it feels like one huge obstacle you'd have to overcome. And by the time the Mantra puzzles begin, the ruins starts to feel small because you took on everything the place threw at you. Be it obtuse puzzles, unclaimed treasure, or undefeated enemies. It really shows. By endgame, you take a look at your inventory, recall some things and say, "wow, what an absolutely satisfying adventure this has been".I'm being dramatic here, but I'm glad I did come across the game when I did. And I'm more than glad to convince any gamer to give it a try.
(Since you finished, I want suggest giving Nigoro's "Future Development Company" a try. It's a really short browser flash game that's free to play. It mixes ideas of real-time strategy, micromanging like Sim City, and puzzle game elements. Why am I suggesting this? There's this La Mulana reference at the near end of the game(there's 5 stages in total), and it's really cool. That and the design behind the game is really unique.)
-
I'm being dramatic
If any game deserves drama, it's La Mulana. And that's a great analysis/perspective on the masterful implementation of scope.
Currently thinking about paying for it again… to get it on Steam. Worth it for achievements + Hell Temple?I'll check out FDC next time I'm alone in the office with no annoying colleagues peering over my shoulder. ;)
-
@CCC:
Worth it for achievements + Hell Temple?
Hell Temple is so mind-numbingly irritating, I'm not even sure if I'd recommend it anyone. Unless you don't mind crying and begging for mercy then YES, I'd so recommend it.
The Achievements added a little extra perspective of the game for me, as I discovered things that I never thought about doing before. Like seeing the full cast in the end credits(basically a 100% of the game). And realizing how easy the game feels after doing Hard Mode a few times. Also some really heavy sequence break shortcuts that are really well hidden. And arbitrary stuff like scanning backgrounds and being amused by the lore/mythologies, learning about actual murals/statues in real life, and little funny quirks(there's a skeleton in the lava that references Terminator, lol).I got like 59 of the 64, and had a blast collecting them.
-

I'd say that's what I live for in games. Iron man runs in Super Meat Boy, staff ghosts in F-Zero GX, that sort of thing.
59/64 already!? Impressive! You've sold me [again. do you work for nigoro?].
Just gotta beat the final level in Romance Dawn, first… -
Just played that rage game 'Cat Mario' for the first time
Oddly addicting
-
Downloaded and played some NetHack. Got to the third level of the dungeon before drinking from a fountain and getting killed by a water demon hiding in it.
-
Platinum'd Okami HD yesterday and now I've started Dead Space 2 again.
I need some space on my PS3 hard drive and there are so much unfinished games lol -
Just recently picked up a game called EYE: Divine Cybermancy, a kind of FPS RPG. It's a pretty fun game. Kind of a mix of Crysis, Stalker, and a couple other games. Putting points into things lets you run really quick, jump really high, cloak, teleport and a bunch of other things, allowing for lots of different playstyles, especially since all the levels are really massive and open. I'm putting most of my points into agility so that I can run fast, especially since the latest patch doubled the maximum running speed, which was apparently already at an insane level.
-
Super Metriod agian. Figured I take a break from La-Mulana after pouring almost 80 hours into it. That and the final Steam Achievement I have to get is probally more obtuse than the most obtuse puzzles in the game.
I'm stuck in Super Metriod though. There's a couple of places where I'm questionting whether or not I'm missing a crucial ability. Like sometimes I fall into places I cannot escape from without reloading. Really strage.

I, on the other hand, just finished my replay of La Mulana after finally getting my free Steam key for it. I'll probably take a short break, then either try to head to Hell Temple (which I never did completely finish my first time through, now that I think of it), or replay the game on Hard Mode and attempt to get some of the achievements.
On that note, it seems quite a few of the achievements are actually linked to tasks you have to complete in game to make certain characters appear in the ending sequence, which is a neat little facet of the game I hadn't realized existed. I had thought different characters showed up the times I had beaten the game in the past, but hadn't realized the mechanic behind it. It makes me think a fun challenge for the future might be to try to get every single character in a single ending; considering that appears to involve a more or less 100% run of the game, on hard mode, and including Hell Temple, in under 10 hours, it would certainly be no small feat I think.
-
Still on MGS3. I'm ashamed to admit that I skipped The End, or rather, I let him die of age. The last straw was when he replenished what little health I managed to take from him after hours of playing.
Oh well, maybe next playthrough.
-
Yeah, I'm at the end of MGS3, doing the whole run without killing anyone. The game's sitting and waiting to be finished for a few months now, too much work. I also bought Ni No Kuni just after release and… only played about 10 h of it. Damn it! I also want to finally finish a few other games, like Limbo, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and Skullgirls (played it only for like an hour...) etc.
So yeah, doesn't look like I'm much of a player, but that's pretty much what I'm playing besides Pokemon.

Yeah. I thought the Achievements explaining the mechanics behind the end credits was really excellent. It was just so satisfying seeing the full cast, in hard mode under 10 hours no less. The most interesting part about this was 100% the treasure chests. There's this chest that only appears in a certain location at Twin Labyrinth DURING the final escape sequence.
It really makes me question Lemeza as a character. He destroys absolutely everything that stood in his way within the ruins including God and Hell itself, has an inventory full of relics, and even has The Secret of Life is his possession. And yet, this man isn't done with La Mulana. During an epic escape sequence, he sidetracks to an obscure location that has nothing to do with an escape route in order finish looting the place for everything its worth. It's even more ironic that the chest contains money that he would never even use.
I thought that moment was absolutely amazing! And it really made me love that I played these kinds of games. There's so much personal love in this title.
But yeah. The challenge Achievements are nuts. Especially "One Hand" and "One Finger". I got them both by playing Hard Mode by default, but they really force you to think outside the box in order to win. I even discovered strategies I never thought was possible.Shame I can't find out what the "Curry Addiction" Achievement is. It's really puzzling, and it's even more unsettling that not alot of people figured it out.
-

Stuck? Where, exactly? Because I can't recall any place where you can get stuck without a way out…
-
Stuck? Where, exactly? Because I can't recall any place where you can get stuck without a way out…
Well, that was a misconception. I got out using one of the more simple advanced techniques when I should have figured it out earlier. No worries.
-
Yeah, as long as you can wall/bomb jump, you should never end up stuck. Hope you're enjoying the game so far…
-
Metal Gear Solid 3.
I'll post my thoughts on the game once I'm done, but let me just get this off my chest for now: unpausable cutscenes are just as bad if not worse than unskippable ones.
There. Later.

Finished Dead Space 2 today and now I start InFamous 2
-
So, I started up Fallout again in order to make a list of the keyboard shortcuts for a friend who's playing it for the first time, and it's only been a few days and I already have the water chip and have cleared about 75% of the game. Damn, Fallout games are addictive…
-
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. It really is a hot mess of a game.
-
Super Metriod agian.
The difficulty of the game really impressed me at first. The enemy types at the beginning were really menacing, and they forced me to use different weapons for different situations. But as the game went on, I noticed that the enemy types started to get more and easier…. until just recently. Ridley's layer is nuts, and I think I'm stuck until I backtrack for rocket refills(there's a green door, and I used up my rockets). It's just a tad disappointing that the area is only difficult because it rehashed/cloned the same enemies from the beginning of game.
As for boss fights, the "over-damage=faster rage mode" mechanic is a really interesting way to balance out the overpowered upgrades you get. I was a little worried how the bosses would have remained interesting without resorting to insta-kill gimmicks or puzzles.
I should be done with the game this weekend if I find the time to pick it up. And that's assuming the last fights don't give me too much trouble. -
The last game I played, and I'm playing (over and over), was/is UnReal World: when summer is getting nearer and nearer, there is nothing like diving in iron age Finland and roaming around endless wilderness as hunter, or living on a sea island as hermit, or lurking around villages to slay and eat people as crazy cannibal, and so on.
Besides, I'm basically addicted to roguelikes and roguelike-esque games, with poor or shunned graphics, complex playing rules, high level of replayability… and keyboard. When you're sitting in front of a computer, keyboard is the way. Always. -
Finished MGS3.
Wow, what a great fucking game. Best one so far without a doubt. It's got Ocelot making dramatic hand gestures, survival in the wild, camouflages, the hero's psyche slowly breaking, a Raiden lookalike being abused and lots of movie trivia - what is there not to like? It even made me want to try eating a snake (he made it seem so delicious).
My only complaint is that Volgin was a really childish villain compared to Liquid and Solidus, but that might be part of the whole Bond theme. -
Finally finished a 25 Level dungeon in Dungeon Hack. Got the hard-as-hell-to-kill Elemental Lord who would've mopped the floor with me if it wasn't for all the back-up health I got from using/abusing Vampiric Touch. Good thing too. That thing did 45-50 damage each time it hit me. Now playing some Sonic Pocket Adventure. Pretty awesome game so far. Just got to Aquatic Relix.

Playing fez right now, I've resolved not to use the internet for help and I've already come across some insanely impossible puzzle…
I've solved one really cryptic one and felt insanely smart
! Understanding the tetris code by myself.
The game is pretty insane I doubt that I'm able to complete a 100% alone but I'm curious how far I can make it. -
Fallout: With how great my stats were, the final fights could not have been easier. The hardest part was keeping Dogmeat alive while going through Mariposa, but that was mostly due to dumb AI and not being able to give him commands (which Fallout 2 fixes, thankfully). Since I took a while before wiping out the vats, some of the towns ended up wiped out by mutants, but fuck it.
! I managed to actually get the speech ending to work on the Master this time around, saving me the trouble of having to kill him and the Nightkin that protect him. It was nice to see him despair over how his perfect plan was all for nothing, too, before he activates the nuke underneath the Cathedral. I also managed to kill the Overseer with one critical hit to the eyes from my Turbo Plasma Rifle after he kicked me out of the vault for good. Take that, you douche. "[I'm] a hero but have to leave"? Fuck you…

InFamous 2.
Just on the second island yet but I did there anything I could do -
Finished Super Metriod. First Metriod game ever. Around 8 hours, and 64%. Not very bad for a blind run?
What to say about it without rambling? There were things I really liked. Specifically the narrative outside the opening being told strictly using visual cues. Be it scenes where Samus interacts with her martian bounties without any spoken dialogue, or just paying attention to the environment. I much prefer this kind of storytelling over games that try very hard to deliver the "moving movie experience with little to no interaction" by a thousand fold. I just feels more personal to me.
I also liked that it almost never holds your hand. I have mad respect for game developers that creates a game and trusts that whoever is playing will overcome their challenge. It's something I feel that is rare these days. Especially in Nintendo's case, where most modern titles I manage to pick up feels so casual. That's not to say Super Metriod was hard. It really wasn't. I just didn't feel like I was insulted while playing it.
Things I didn't like? Hmm.
I guess I can forgive my gripes.
It's a pretty old game afterall. Now I'm a little bit curious to check out the Prime games later on.
-
Looking forward to Super Metroid for 30p in a few weeks. Can't go wrong at that lol
Finished Ni No Kuni Plat yesterday. Today started on Okami HD. forgot how looong the opening is. Not a fan of the drawing with the Analogue sticks. feels awkward when doing circles and pretty slow. I guess I could use the move but…..I don't think so.
-
Well you get used to the controls with the sticks.
Nothing can beat the Wiimote though -
Yeah controls are fine. Going from the Wii-Mote (and even touch screen) controls to regular sticks doesn't feel as natural however.
-
I had to turn the difficulty down to medium to beat that stupid dwarf guy that used to be your boss in DA:O. Pretty cool game though. It plays kind of like WoW from what I can tell but I don't mind it at all. I also heard that the entire control scheme was changed for the console version, which makes sense because I was wondering how the game would play with a controller. I'm at the part where I need to get darkspawn blood and the scrolls from some ruin to get on with becoming a grey warden.
-
Tell you a good game if you like MMORPG type games like WOW or Dragon Age. Kingdoms of Amalur. Personally I felt it was so much fun. While the first few areas are kinda the same the world is huuuuuuuge. Well worth checking it out.

The game is pretty insane I doubt that I'm able to complete a 100% alone but I'm curious how far I can make it.Fez is such a great game, absolutely loved it the first time through. It's one the few games I've had to use a guide for though, if only for a couple of puzzles.
I just couldn't figure out that damn black monolith puzzle :/Currently I'm playing Alan Wake and trying to find the last collectibles to finish up the achievements.
Will play Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD or Gears: Judgement next. :D -
I think I saw my brother playing KoA. Looked pretty decent. Combat looked cool. I wouldn't say I like those types of games per se, as I don't particularly like WoW but they're fun to play on occasion. I also need to play the Gothic games.

fez is also one of the few games that has me keeping notes.
I still don't understand what those big stones with those weird cubic signs are.
I don't understand what the stuff the two owls told me means.
Most of the treasure maps have me clueless about them.
Those small stone like logs with cubic holes at the top are also weird.
So much mystery and so much still to discover. It's not a game I would recommend to anyone but to those that like to get into things it's insanely awesome and damn the level design is pretty outstanding.
That had to take some pretty amazing understanding of space. -
I just bought Fez last night as well and so far I'm impressed. I'm really happy to be getting puzzles and mysteries that AREN'T super obvious or don't have some tutorial pop up and tell me what to do every time I take too long. But I'm really early in the game. I have heard from friends that you probably want to jot notes down for the cyphers and stuff so yeah. I'll probably post more after playing more. I barely left the village.
-
I much prefer this kind of storytelling over games that try very hard to deliver the "moving movie experience with little to no interaction" by a thousand fold. I just feels more personal to me.
Now I'm a little bit curious to check out the Prime games later on.
Definitely skip Other M, then. It was the only game I've ever returned to the store in my life (my review, here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/960554-metroid-other-m/reviews/review-142993 ). And you might not like Fusion as much (a lot of dialogue and hand-holding) but at least Fusion has the same great gameplay as Super.
And ABSOLUTELY play the Prime Trilogy. Prime 1 is tied with Majora's Mask for my favorite game of all time, with Prime 2 in my top 10 and Prime 3… in my top 25? Which is still damn good. The gameplay is obviously different than Super, but the trilogy is an example of a series evolving the right way by preserving everything that made the earlier entries great while expanding based on better technology. I'm not a fan of FPSs at all, but the fact is, Prime is a FPAdventure/Explorer/Puzzler. I was actually reminded of the scanning system (for lore, enemies, etc.) while trying to complete La Mulana's Archaelogical Authority achievement. People even sometimes compare Prime to Dark Souls in the sense that if you don't care about the world/story, you'll never know about it, but the amount of time you put into seeking out that lore correlates directly with how immersive the world actually becomes. Prime3 loses points with me because they throw the isolated, melancholic atmosphere out the window almost completely, to the extent that there are actually NPCs walking around to whom you can talk (MP1 has zero npcs. MP2 has exactly one.).
/ramblingcomplete9 achievements left to do in La Mulana. Had to start my perfect hard mode run over twice (several hours in, both times) due to missing emails. Already did All I Need is One Finger, so all that I'm worried about at this point is Room 30 in Hell.

I think I've read that reveiw around the time it was out. Yeah, I think I know just about everything I need to know about Other M. It was the made by the same team that made Ninja Giaden(Sigma?) right? From what I can tell, they can't portray a good female character(or characters in general) for thier lives. That, and I seen a retsupurea riff of it. I don't even think the gameplay would be enough for me to try it out, as I'm sure I could find that in the Prime games.
Thanks for the ramble though. Now I'm more than convinced to look into those games, especially since it's tied with MM in your list of best titles.
Good luck with the remainder Achievements in La-Mulana. I saw you on the Steam message board asking around about some of them(I'm Akimaye there).
I unfortunately is stuck on the Curry Addict one. I felt like I did absolutely everything I can with the game, but that achievement sticks out like a sore thumb.
But I can't ignore it. 63/64 o_o. I know it's useless, but it's so close. -

I wish I could help you, but I just followed the requirements listed on the wiki and got it without issue. Not to say that's necessarily all there is to it, since I certainly pause plenty of times, and may well have done so under other conditions, but if so, I couldn't begin to tell you what they were. The only thing I can say is that I eventually got it when pausing while slipping on ice, which is notable because that's a condition that I would have sworn I had already intentionally completed prior to that point. So, assuming I wasn't mis-remembering, it does seem that the achievement might be somewhat finicky in terms of counting something towards credit.

No. This is useful. If you have gotten it while sliding around in Grave of Giants, that pretty much confirms that all the conditions don't have to be done on a single play-through. Meaning the last one does not have to be done during the whole escape sequence. Thanks. I'll most like come across it again, but on a challenge run to keep the game a little fresh. Anything but a 32 health run, as I did it before and realized that Tiamat was near impossible due to the unpredictability of her hair lasers(which is a shame… everything else is doable)

Hmm. When you were "intentionally completing" the curry-eating, how long did you let the animation go until? Did you wait for the z's to slow down? But yes- very good to know that it doesn't have to be on a single playthrough. I have a feeling that will be my final achievement too…
btw, do either of you know if it's possible to somehow scan the wedges in Twin Labyrinths and Graveyard of the Giants? They're in the text dump ("A mural with the number 2/7 written backwards in La-Mulana script") and they would account for the two remaining scans that I need, but they're conspicuously inaccessible within walls.
EDIT: Oh wait. That steam thread says that the water/wind/fire/blood stones don't count. In that case I'm missing six. Bleh. -

EDIT: Oh wait. That steam thread says that the water/wind/fire/blood stones don't count. In that case I'm missing six. Bleh.I honestly couldn't tell you precisely how long I waited, unfortunately. I do know that I did pause at the very least until he started his sleeping animation, at the suggestion of the wiki, to ensure that his curry animation had completely finished. I suppose it couldn't hurt to wait longer to be safe, though. No idea about the wedges, either; I haven't really made any effort yet to get that achievement, nor either of the 'have every conversation' ones.
As to Hiroy's mention of a challenge run: no thank you, not for me. Quite aside from the fact that my obsessive completionism would make it next to impossible for me to intentionally skip sacred orbs or anything of the like, I'm simply not good enough to try to pull that sort of thing off. I still have a run of Cave Story in Hard Mode (which is an immense understatement if I've ever heard one, as far as I'm concerned) that I've left at only around halfway done for quite some time now.

The wedges that are in the walls are not scannable to my knowledge. If you scanned all the locations I listed in the missable thead, you probally just overlooked a few. Did you try some of the foliage in Endless Corridoor? There are a few that don't stand out too much. Specifically a certain statue(there's a few of these, but I have no idea if it counts for one), and "literally" the sun. There's also a mural of Musushushu in Spring in the Sky near Bahumut's later(that was my last one, and I had no idea how I overlooked it). The Twin Gates near the entrance of the ruins count too, but you might have gotten that already. I don't think Lemeza's dad laptop within Shrine of Mother counts. There's also that wind you can scan in front of that breakable wall(water area) in Chamber of Extinction. The blue floor(for the minekart) in Temple of the Sun is scannable too, but there's a really tiny window to do so near that statue.

Hahah. Well, I like the game so much that I liked finding new and new ways to play it differently.
My favorite type of challenge was pretending the game was like Legend of the Hidden Temple.
Which is creating an objective, and setting a timer with very limited resources. For example. Go in, grab the Ice Cape and try to escape before the time runs out(no warping either). It was kinda fun, and I feel like that was a missed opportunity on Nigoro's part.

Oh man. You mean the no health upgrade run? I was stuck on Monster X for weeks, got past that, and then got absolutely stonewalled by The Core. I actually gave up there. It just wasn't happening T_T
Hm. I know the statues in Twin Labs have numbers written them, even though they aren't really murals.
Yeah, I systematically went through everything in the text dump… definitely got everything listed within specific ruins areas, except the wind/water/fire/blood and maybe the blocks in the walls in CoInferno? But someone said that those tablets don't count, so I've still got at least five unaccounted for.
Do you remember where these three are?"There is a small opening in the wall"
"There is a small opening in the stone wall"
