I guess, but it doesn't really look like either now that I took another look at it

The resemblance is mostly in the overall shape of the mask and the two sort of circles/disks on the sides where their ears should be. Also notice how the circles on Killer's mask follows a verticle line similar to where there is a vertical bar running up the Daft punk mask. That's pretty much it.

Also Oda has clearly demonstrated that he is a big fan of music (and music culture in general). Whereas, I have yet to see him make a whole lot of horror based references.

But what I find interesting additionally is that - during his activity - he and his crew captured the ship Nossa Senhora do Cabo e São Pedro, on which among other things were religious articles of the cathedral of Goa.

Makes the name of Luffy's home island rather interesting, seeing how the king of that kingdom was made rather suspicious already.
Sabo's name could also be inspired by the ship then, though Cabo seems to be the portuguese word for cape.

I just found it very coincidental at least that this real pirate, which execution seems to highly resemble Roger's, captured this ship with people and things from a place with a name, that also exists in OP, on it.

Yes, they are.
However, those were actually noted by several fans years ago, since all of those wrestlers were very popular in Japan.

We have seen characters (more specifically character designs) based on famous Japanese actors- Yusaku Matsuda (Aokiji), Kunie Tanaka (Kizaru), Bunta Sugawara (Akainu) and Shintaro Katsu (Fujitora). I wonder if, in the future, we will see characters based on well-known actors such as Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura. I think that would be cool to see. Make it happen Oda-sensei! :happy:

I mean it should be glaringly obvious that Oda reserves this design choice for the Admirals.
And if that's the case we have one more new Admiral to meet.

I don't think any of the confirmed Vice Admirals have a well-known Japanese actor's face. It could be a Vice Admiral we haven't seen yet, who gets promoted, or a retired Marine who is called into service yet again.

Don't know if anyone has ever mentioned it before, but I've just watched Kurosawa's Akahige and I thought it was full of more-than-probably inspiring material for Oda - that, or I just can't watch a japanese film without thinking of One Piece. Here they are:

First, and for me the most evident one (don't even bother comparing Shanks with this Akahige… the only way they had a connection would be if Shanks was revealed to be a great doctor) is the child Otoyo. Briefly, she's 12, with a very sad past and treated like a slave untill she's saved by the doctors, who teach her that there are also nice people in this world. And, just like Koala with The Sun Pirates, she doesn't know how to react to kindness, and both have an obsession with wipping the floor:

There's also lots of intellectual talk about medicine which made me think of Chopper's past (and Drum saga in general), and this scene of Otoyo trying to learn medicine in order to cure her mentor/doctor was conclusive:

The plot is all about medicine and illnessess, and maybe that's the only reason it reminds me of Chopper, but I thought it had to be more than a coincidence when at the end of the movie three boys are poisoned. Unlike the others, it is not a clear inspiration, but I thought it was somehow related to the children in Punk Hazard. It is not an experiment and it isn't caused by a drug, but both plots make the doctors (and the spectator) to care more about the victim by emphazising that they are just kids. And how this scene ends is also very similar to how Luffy recovers from Magellan's poison in Impel Down: there's a 'time limit' ("if he survives the night [the process of the body ejecting the poison], he'll live") and meanwhile the boy is cheered with shouts, untill morning (they shout his name to a well because of [insert traditional beliefs).

IMO, there are even more hints to odaish inspirations, but I don't think they are that clear, but more likely a regular cultural/japanese thing more than a tribute or reference to Kurosawa. For example, the main character (not Akahige) drinks sake in a very Shanksesque way - not only from the same dish, but also with large recipients. There's also a scene with a traditional japanese wedding where the newlyweds exchange cups during the Sakazuki ritual, just like Luffy, Ace and Sabo do, and which is also the name of Akainu. Even if the cups thing is (surely) not a reference of this specific film, it is indeed curious enough to watch an 'Akahige' calling repeatedly to bring 'Sakazuki' in.

You sounded like you were reminded of Chopper and his past in general when you saw the movie so I don't know if you remember this, but in Chopper's past there was actually a scene in which Kureha gets sick and she tells Chopper to make a medicine for her without her instructions. So that's really similiar.

Well, in the film she doesn't learn medicine at all, she just tries to because she cares for him. More than a medical lesson, it is shown as her learning to be kind. So, I'd say the plot with the kid is exactly like Koala's, but I don't doubt the film also influenced in the interest for aproaching medicine in a moral way (via Chopper).

I agree with your first statement; it is obvious. But do you really think Oda bases his gnomes solely on folk tales, he makes a lot of cultural references (both old and recent).

I find your second statement to be rude, if you want to correct my assumption then provide me with proof (I would appreciate it). How many folk tales, or more recent stories (in literature or other media) depicts gnomes with strength surpassing humans. I am only familiar with the one I mentioned so I may be wrong.

You're "tiny bit of research" is at least what I did to come to a "pretty sure" dingus. And you're absolutely shitting yourself if you think something started in 1977 (the BOOKS that the show you're talking about were based off) is where the common build of gnomes come from. For christ sakes, they had garden gnomes since at least the 1600's.
And again. There's practically no denying that gnomes came from the same place as dwarves, strange earth imps. And have a long varied storied history of myths and whatnot that predates the crap out of a 1980's cartoon show.

Nowhere in my previous post do I say anything about the 'David the gnome' build (as I called it) being the source of common gnome build. I merely equated David the gnome to the common gnome build. I repeat: I do not disagree with you.
You seem to be missing my point entirely. Maybe I am doing a bad job of conveying my thoughts. This whole time I have referred to the strength factor of Oda's gnomes only. And if you want to liken gnome strength to that of dwarves based on their common origin, then in what literature are dwarves stronger than humans? In my experience they are usually referred to as strong, strong for their size, as strong as large strong human men, but I have never read of them as stronger that humans.

Just as the Scandinavians have their links to the Germans and Dutch, as well as the Finns and Estonians.

I've been doing whatever I want here for some eight years, I don't really see how now is the time to stop.

Let's say Dressrosa is a mix of Spain, Italy, Greece and whatever Oda wants, but still they eat gazpacho and paella and not pasta

And they still have a Roman Colosseum with Centurion and Hoplite looking dudes running around. With names like Kyros and Hera. Does a Spanish dish really outweigh the huge arena thing? Really? And just because we haven't seen pasta or souvlaki yet doesn't mean we won't.

Dressrosa as a location is based mainly on Spain.

Should be blatantly obvious that it contains central story elements and locations influenced by other European countries that he couldn't add to previous locations.

You are a cultural sphere all together. Including also parts of Southern France and maybe Croatia and Turkey if we stretch things out all the way. That obviously doesn't make you identical but it damn well makes you all part of a cultural sphere. Just as the Scandinavians have their links to the Germans and Dutch, as well as the Finns and Estonians.

Kyros an Hera are Greek, perfect, so it's not italian, the only italian thing that you mentioned is the colosseum and guess what: There are colosseums in Spain as well! As you said it's a similar country to Italy and both have colosseums and gladiators. Obviously the most famous and biggest is in Rome, but to call it Corrida Colosseum it's like to say "hey this is a spanish colosseum, that's why it's got a spanish name"

Other random names to pop up have been Italian. And you are kidding yourself to death if you think anyone associates colosseums and gladiators with Spain. Christ they have those things all over the Medd, even in North Africa, but there's only one place that ROMAN gladiatorial (and it's not even remotely subtle what with the armor) activities represent.
