Also….I read that article you linked, and noticed that he only began slating Gibson after he and warnerbrothers chastised him for a poor attempt at a first script.
It sounded like revenge.
Yeah that wasn't a good article, but I was having trouble finding anything that explicitly had Gibson quoting anything that suggested that he was a quasi-holocaust denier (or something) (CCC probably knows better than me since he is bringing up better references at a faster pace). Though I am still intrigued by the fact they handed him a Maccabees film.
In regards to the Passion, Mel Gibson doesn't stomp up to the screen and flat out call the Jews as Hebe Jewboys. However, inherently, the Jews (overall) are put in a very negative light (which might ALSO be inherent due to the overall Passion narrative which does villianize the Jews to an extent). Naturally not ALL the Jews were portrayed as "evil characters" (obviously Jesus is Jewish…despite being played by a white guy, but who cares...as well as his disciples). However, the Jews are the entity that "kills" Jesus and thus should be despised. This movie feels very "hate" driven against this particular entity (even though in the biblical narrative it is clear that the Jews were the ones that killed Jesus, BUT there was still an element of forgiveness from Jesus and the redemption of his followers that makes the narrative stronger). Either Gibson missed this part or just overlooked it by focusing strictly on the physical element of the story. In result, he then neglects the motivation of WHY Jesus did all this in the first place (something about absolving sins and forgiveness). Therefore, the Jews become simply an entity that is to despised rather than one that can find redemption for their actions.
It is a tad confusing, but that's the sort of impression I got from it. Err hope this makes sense :getlost:
Returns back behind trapped's walls Gurglegurglekahkahkahbreeeeeeehhhhh....
The only reason I've booted out dogs until now is because I hate them passionately. I've got a few traumatic experiences from them as a child, pushed to the ground by retrievers who I thought woul maul me. Stuff like that. So if they get close to try and intentionally jump me or take advantage of my fear and hate towards them, I defend myself with cold and sinister efficiency. And when I was 13 and stark raving angry, I'd sometimes take my anger on the corpses of rodents my cats had caught. With a mallet to the skull. Maybe 3 times or less.
We all go a little mad sometimes.
I know we aren't supposed to judge each other for the stuff we say here, but this is worrying…Have you sought any sort of counseling?
I just can't agree with you on this, or moreso see it in the same light that you have. And that is down to how you can say he is antisemetic because he didn't portray Jesus showing them enough redemption in his final act. What you need to understand is that Jesus carried the cross/our sins, then died for US, not just one groups of people. Therefore had little need to put them on a stage of praise.
(CCC probably knows better than me since he is bringing up better references at a faster pace).
My references were found by googling: "Mel Gibson [-ism of your choice]." ;D

I gotta agree. You might want to talk to a professional about this. Killing/mutilating animals as a child is never a sign of anything good.
I hate dogs with a passion as well, but I could never physically harm one.

True, your point makes sense, but the anti-semitism was inherent within the Passion story already. All I felt in the movie was "hate" for the Jewish characters for doing something utterly "heinous" to such a pleasant character. After reflecting on it, I thought this was a dangerous emotional tug by the filmmaker. That's the inherent problem with the film and I don't think it could have been avoided at all by doing the Passion story. If you chose to make a movie about the passion (ESPECIALLY the torture scenes and the actual Crucifixion), you're going to have some anti-semetic stuff manifest within the narrative through its depiction. However, it could be counterbalanced if you do include elements of forgiveness, peace, and love to all people (WHICH also encompasses that Jews that voiced for his crucifixion).
THOUGH: my opinion of Gibson….he's a wacky guy but who doesn't have their own problems? Oddities is commonplace. Gibson is a fine actor and does a "fairly" decent job at directing (hell, I've seen MUCH worse...cough Eli Wood cough). He just needs a bit more tact in his life and...probably a GOOD therapist.

Don't worry I've seen my psichiatrist once every other week since 2005 and I've always gotten better. But the darkest recesses of my mind remain hidden from the world… Not that I visit them often mind you. It's been fun though. I liked your reaction BTW.
Also I have autism, remember? This was just my way of dealing with anger management issues, before I got on a gluten free diet that prior to recieving, The wheat kept poisoning my mind.

Don't be like Dio
!
But seriously I've had a lot of bad experiences with dogs as well but remember most dogs are a fluffy bunch of goodness and love.
Also on Mel Gibson
!
If you ever punt one of these, I'll pop out of your computer screen and strangle you…
Now now, not those kinds of harmless dogs Valiantt. Don't you worry. This is the confession session!
Unless they shit all over me.

to be honest I'm surprised anyone could lay blame on the director when it was a pretty solid transplant from the bible.

but at the same time risk warping the actual story. I don't see why anyone should alter a story thousands of years old to try and appease anyone.
If he did you would probably then have the Vatican and millions of Christians moan about the fake portrayal. To be honest I think the one thing that we learned (if not here but with abed on community) and that is that….religious films will destroy your career.

amen to that. Lol

That's the problem though, Gibson did a decent job with the whole depiction (great atmosphere, was a real emotional experience even though the film can be labeled as torture porn, Aramaic/Latin utterances were a HUGE plus, etc…) and it is probably one of the best Passion films we have; BUT by focusing 95% on the torture (beating and crucifixion) you're going to be indirectly (or directly...depending on the director's intention) depicting the Jews as heartless monsters bashing on a poor guy. It is inevitable that you're going to be bashing the Jews in this film whether it is your intention or not. You CANNOT change the story because you're just going asking for a major problems. Which is why it is essential to show what happens next AFTER he dies to demonstrate the element of forgiveness and so on so that it won't seem like you are out there to bash the Jews for a good 3 hours or so (whether this was Gibson's intention or not).
That's the problem. The film lacks the proper balance of the Passion narrative that includes both the torture and the redemption/forgiveness. By focusing on the torture part, you are just making the Jews look really bad (which is where one can get the impression that this is Jew bashing film). This needs to be counterbalanced effectively (with the forgiveness and redemption) so it doesn't appear like this is your agenda for the film.
PS: Err oppsies I didn't mean "Eli Wood" (which I guess I accidently meant Elijah Wood)...but Eli Roth...yuck.
You know I have a feeling we both need to watch this film again and deeply scrutinised it to come to a middle ground. Why couldn't it have been a good film like lethal weapon or…erm...er. Does his part in Pocahontas count lol.
I could talk for hours about racism in both XD
Yeaaaah, I admit I would need to rewatch the Passion for an update. I just remember the last impression I had was that it was a really…aggressive, hate-filled movie.
Pocahontas and Lethal Weapon though? Oh yeah, I can dig a top on racism on these two films. Pocahontas...so strange to think that is Mel Gibson. I don't know why I barely ever put the two together.
When I was a little, irresponsible brat(I honestly don't remember how old I was at the time.Around the time of being a first-grader perhaps?Maybe earlier.)my dad bought me a puppy. It was way too early for me to own a puppy. When it failed to live up to my TV-influenced ideals of a stick-fetching fido,I became quicly disenchanted .Even mistreated it a couple of times.Like dropping it from a stair to stair and the worst I managed to do before my mother intervened was to drop it off a hammack.
I was a mini-Dio,damn.
I've been holding this confession in for quite some time actually.

I hope you feel better after revealing that. :) It does sound like you were too young to own a puppy, and possibly that no one really taught you how to treat it or play with it, which is pretty important for dogs I think. Pets can be great for children but it's not an automatic switch to happiness and well-being.
Also I have autism, remember? This was just my way of dealing with anger management issues
I know where you're coming from, i used to constantly feel the urge to lash out too.
But kicking dogs? I don't think i'd ever go that far. (we're probably on different parts of the autism spectrum, but still)
Despite my issues, i was taught about 'right and wrong' very effectively by my family.
I endured years of bullying in lower school because i didn't believe in fighting back, but i don't regret it.
Being nice trumps being a jerk any day, and i've been rewarded with a group of people i'm proud to call my true friends.
I hope that one day you'll be able to control your issues with dogs.
Good luck with it~

The Passion came out at the height of the most recent (what now in retrospect probably the last ever) really awful Christian Right furor in the States at the height of the Bush era, the ALL HORROR NO REDEMPTION, BAD UNDERTONES thing is unmissable to some Americans I think that a Brit can't quite see Gibson leaping around amid.
I've got a few traumatic experiences from them as a child, pushed to the ground by retrievers who I thought woul maul me. Stuff like that.
I guess I'm a little late on this, but I haven't been around to comment before now.
I realize people react to things in different ways, but still, I just can't stand people that use this as a reason for disliking dogs. I quite literally had my face half ripped off by a dog when I was a child, yet I still love the fluffy little guys. As I say, I know it's not reasonable to expect others to share my sort of views, but it just makes it somewhat difficult for me to respect people when they say they dislike dogs because one barked at them really loudly once.
Agressive large dogs scare the fuck out of me. I don't much like knowing that at any point this thing could just bite my fingers off

That's quite how I feel about the matter with canines. Which is ironic given your Profile name. (Or is it just from Trigun?)
I confess that once when we were kids playing around our house, my neighbour's white fluffy poodle sarted yelping at my younger sister. She got so scared (it wasn't chasing/attacking her or anything) that I just started laughing because the dog was so little and fluffy. XD

White and FLUFFY~ (yeah I know it's not a poodle, sue me).

Ya it's just from Trigun. I was more of a cat person growing up really
Hmm wonder if i would be scared of a huge pomeranian? Or does the fluffy cuteness offset the gigant teeth
Pomeranian s are so last year…Papillon pups are were they're at.
FLUFF. HOW CAN SOMETHING BE SO FLUFFY.
On the topic of people's fears of dogs, I don't totally understand lashing out at them out of fear. But I also know that if someone were to trick me onto going onto a high suspension bridge and leave me there, I would kick them in the groin and toss them over the edge. I'm also deathly afraid of objects flying at me (I screamed when my friend pretended to toss a pair of keys to me), so hey! The world is full of bizarre phobias.
Don't kick dogs though. Or any animal. Unless they're actually attacking you and you need to physically react for self-defense. Lickimg and biting doesn't really count I think, some dogs seem to do that even if they like you. XD
I don't like stray dogs. The fuckers used to roam all over my college campus. A gang of them once chased me through this little thicket near my hostel. I barely managed to make it to the steps of my hostel as the dogs were snapping at my heels. The guard came to my rescue, otherwise I would have been mauled.
Crazy fucks get overly aggressive as soon as they have a numbers advantage.
But I wouldn't kick one. Probably.
There was a group of stray dogs hanging around in from my house. They were a really cocky group.
My neighbor fortunately decided break up the pact by taking the female in the group to be sprayed and eventually adopted(I helped to make her more comfortable and less aggressive toward humans).
As for the rest of the group, they just split and left. Which was good. No one likes to be around a stray female dog that is either having puppies or have puppies. Shit gets all territorial.
Still, I love dogs. Despite being psychically attacked by one as a kid. I just really hate people that abandon them. Related to the story above, those most of the strays on my property were probably just left behind by people who had their homes foreclosed.
Pomeranian s are so last year…Papillon pups are were they're at.

Pomeranians shall never fade away. They'll go out in the field braveheart style
I'm personally fond of these guys.

So yeah I guess you win.
Chow chow is the most unruly stubborn laziest dog breed ever. Which of course makes it the best

Hell I would in a heartbeat (and have in the past well), but it's kinda expensive.
