Looks like Resident Evil meets Silent Hill meets Condemned. Disappointed that the trailer was live-action tho… I wish game companies would stop doing that, no one wants that.

Quite literally looks like that mash-up. And I agree 100% about the trailer… what a dumb trailer. Excited about the game though.
Oh jeez: http://gamingeverything.com/46095/the-evil-within-art-pieces-uses-portion-of-war-z-screenshot/
A brief summary of the story:
When Detective Sebastian and his partner rush to the scene of a gruesome mass murder, a mysterious, powerful force is lying in wait for them. Witnessing the killing of fellow police officers one after another, Sebastian is then attacked and loses consciousness. Waking up in a land where monsters are wandering about, Sebastian has to fight his way through a world of death and its close friend madness in order to understand what’s going on. Sebastian has to face his fears in order to survive on a journey to discover what lies in the shadows of that mysterious force.
It's apparently using idTech 5, I wonder if it'll use those megatextures.
Also, live action trailers are worthless. They're worse than CG trailers. I'll wait for an actual trailer.
I've learned to just ignore trailers at this point.
I see Mikami IP and I salivate. That is all I need to know.
I have money where do I throw my money?
That trailer reminds me of a 90's horror flick.
IGN expanded their first look at the game earlier today: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/22/the-evil-within-first-look
Gotta say, after reading this & watching the video, I am mad hype to see more from this game. It's neat that they're using the Winchester House's architecture as a source of inspiration (windows in the floor, doors & staircases going nowhere, ect). Given that the game takes place in an asylum, it merges well with the creepy psychological elements that naturally comes from this particular location.
Looks like they're trying in earnest to balance the sense of unpredictability with limited combat options. Shifting environments? That can happen at any time? oooo yes~ Keep me on my toes, game. Definitely interested in seeing more of the monster designs as well.
So yeah. Really intrigued with the idea of seeing another survival horror game that is actually…you know, scary.
It looks a lot like Shadows of the Damned minus the Suda51 influence and meant to be taken seriously. Which is fine by me since I'm always down for Shinji Mikami works anyway but a survival horror actually looking somewhat horrifying is a huge plus.
Getting authentic SH vibes from this….
I think "Psycho Break" is a better title for the game, honestly. "The Evil Within" sounds slightly generic, imo.
I wonder if Vault Head is going to be this game's answer to Pyramid Head.
Not sure what the obsession is with renaming his games. Biohazard was a perfectly fitting title for Resident Evil, too.
Yeah. Biohazard>Resident Evil, Fahrenheit>Indigo Prophecy, Psycho Break>Evil Within.
Also that last game image has some weird film scratch effect. I hope that's not used too often.
Hmm… The Evil Within... Resident Evil... The Evil that Lives Inside... Tenant of Evil... Evil for Rent...
It's coming to the PS4 and Xbone as well as PS3, 360, and PC.
Ugh do they really need to put a big lock icon on locked doors? That doesn't take away from the atmosphere at all <_<
seems like a weird design decision given that the lack of information is a pretty effective tool to create more suspense, especially when shit hits the fan.
I mean when you escape into a corridor not knowing which doors can actually be opened that could pump some adrenaline.
That's basically exactly what I meant. It also means you should have to actually approach doors and try to open them to find out they're locked, which is proper exploration protocol, and doesn't break the immersion by saying "HEY GUYS THIS IS ACTUALLY A VIDEO GAME" in big red letters.
Well I have a selective mind, I thought that icon didn't show up until he actually checked the door and thus it didn't bother me. But nope, it was up on there the whole time. That is… indeed stupid.
There was a lengthy demo at QuakeCon and someone managed to snag 3 (sadly very short) clips. http://evilwithin.net/
Zombies slowing down to attack you when they were running a while ago is just… disappointing .

This pretty much has to be done in a shooter. There's gotta be a stage where enemies are fairly stationary, rather they're peeking out of cover, or slowly walking.
Shinji Mikami has revealed that this isn't his last game afterall, he's not retiring.
Holy.
Shit.
Yeah that was a pretty cool trailer. Hope it's good :D
Yeah that looks awesome.
I need some new Horror game :D
Oh hey, look.
It's the Dressrosa flower field
Is that Rebecca's house?
:silly:
Well with release date approaching fast, more and more info and footage has been surfacing and I've gotta say… it looks amazing.
For a long time the stuff they were showing looked very action-based (though gruesome), but with recent previews I'm super hyped. It TOTALLY has Resident Evil vibes with this opulent mansion feel, items to pick up and use elsewhere, puzzles, and everything. Better than I was imagining. Check out this video:
I watched about 15 minutes of it last night and… I'm actually iffy. I think the checkpoint system needs work due to how easily you die, that it should put you at the beginning of a room or if it wants to be more survival horror just make you depend on saves. At this point the checkpoint system looks annoying more than scary. Also I have to say the framerate worries me... I'm not a dude who believes "It's not 60? Fuck that!" and I'm actually completely cool with 30, but the game looks like it isn't solid 30... like it's dropping down often.
Really? I don't notice any framerate issues. It might partially be the visual style throwing you off, because the screen angle sort of sways a little with your steps, and combining that with turning and camera manipulation looks a little unusual. I'd be really surprised if this doesn't run at 60 FPS on a PS4, considering it's cross-platform with last generation.
Putting you at the beginning of a room if you die is absurd. That takes all the fear and pressure off. I don't know exactly how often the checkpoints are, but if it works anything like RE4 then that's probably good (checkpoints after large area chunks or progress milestones). I didn't watch the whole thing straight through, so what isn't clear to me right now is if there are saves in addition to checkpoints. Because having the game auto-save on me when I'm doing poorly sounds awful. But I think the general concept of checkpoints, to prevent the annoyance of having to manually save constantly just in case, is okay. I mean, unless saving were to be a very specific part of the survival like in the old REs, where you could actually run out of ink ribbons and not be able to save (and also your score sometimes depended on your number of saves). But otherwise, I'd say the ideal is something like RE4 where you have to manually save, but if you die it restores you from a checkpoint.

RE4 checkpoints are great, it's just not what I'm seeing here exactly. For example the first checkpoint he gets is him finishing the brain puzzle. Then he has this long holographic discussion (which you can just walk away from), a bomb to duck under, a dude busting through the door to kill, then finally out into the main hall in which it has you focus to the door showing that one of the three unlocks have been done. The checkpoint should've been at the door showing the unlock, not all the way back at the brain puzzle. In the 20 or so minutes I watched, over half of it was him going back through that segment cause he died, and he got a decent ways from that puzzle too.
As for framerate, it isn't 60. They have already stated they're targeting 30.

Well, ideal placement is definitely debatable (not sure I necessarily agree with you, depending on the amount of time and danger before/after). But in concept I don't see an issue.

Ah. Well at any rate my point was that it didn't look like the frame rate was really changing or dropping noticeably to me. But I'm interested, if they are targeting the same frame rate for all version, in seeing just how much they can boost the visuals in exchange.

Have you even paid attention most of last gen and even a lot of this gen? Targetting a framerate almost never means the game will average that. If anything it not being solid 30 fps should be obvious by them saying they're targetting 30 fps.
And you sound like you're bringing up your dislike of difficult games again in this post Buuhan :sideways: .

I'll bring up whatever I like in conversation, thanks.
Wow, how have I not known of this game's existence until now.
I just read the GameInformer feature on it, proceeded to watch a few select videos and boy am I excited. I've been itching for a new actual survival-horror game and not another disappointing survival-action one and this looks to fit the bill. I decided not to watch any actual demos so as to preserve the first impact of everything, and I think it'll pay off.
The only thing stopping me from getting this game would be overwhelmingly unanimous negative reviews, but this seems like a polished, passionate game with actual care put into it's development. At least based on previews/interviews.

For a minute I was like "what the hell people are giving it unanimous negative reviews!?" Then I realized you were being hypothetical. I'm really excited too. Might even be the tipping point for me to buy a PS4 (yes I know it's also out on previous gen, but still).

Yeah, I just picked up a PS4 this month and I'm glad I finally got it out of the way. Now I'll be prepared for all next gen exclusives as well as better versions of cross gen games like this one. I couldn't say whether it's completely worth it but it's definitely nice to have definitive products.
The game has leaked online as well as several retailers broke street date (largely overseas). There's several streams on Twitch right now and people have already beat it (no worries, it's 15-17 hours) so I'm cautioning everyone to watch out for spoilers.
Thanks for the heads up, Buuhan! I'd be mighty pissed if I accidentally stumbled upon the ending of the game, especially so close to release.
As much as I love Mikami I have no interest in this. Looks so try hard.
So far the reviews are either average or really high. No really terrible ones though. Man should I buy it now or wait? I can't decide.^^
Joystiq is the only one I saw that gave it an awful review. But the consensus seems to be that the story is crap but the gameplay is cool.
The PC version is the best. Not because "OMFG GRAPHIC SETTINGS" it just has better performance and you can do things like remove the letterboxing. Currently, tragically, it appears the Xbone version is better than the PS4 version. PS4 has a real buggy framerate. Xbone got a 7GB patch, PS4 has not (yet?).
I honestly think that Sony is having devs run the game at higher settings than the PS4 can handle just so they can brag about it while not really caring about performance. I mean the PS4 is stronger than the Xbone but it's not some massive gap like Sony wants people to believe. 1080p being the main thing they're pushing for since that's a hot topic these days.

Basically it mixes elements of the earlier Resident Evil titles with elements of the later games. Guess I'll give this a try somewhere down the road.
Yeah I think I wait up for some more opinions and a price drop. It usually doesn't take long for games to drop in price, so long they are not nintendo or call of duty games.^^ And next week I will have both bayonetta 1 & 2 anyway, for the same price as the evil within, which is enough for the rest of this month.
