About Vergo, didn't DD say in issue 698 just before pwning Smoker that he was dead? I recall there was a discrepancy about the translation of that line.

Yes. DD definitely thinks Vergo is dead. For better or worse, that doesn't mean anything. This is One Piece.

Yeah you're right. I just thought that DD confirmed Vergo's death by activating his CoO, but just as I started typing this sentence I realised that I assumed too hastily that DD has Rayleigh-level CoO. In fact I don't remember him ever using it.

Right. And even in the event that he was using CoO, that doesn't seem to be a very good absolute measure of anything. Even Enel thought Luffy was dead… just because he was inside the snake (and Braham, Genbo, etc., just because they were knocked out). And Enel's CoO was top-tier because of his fruit.
