Berserk volumes don't have nearly enough artless splotches of screentone for MY taste
Why yes, I AM still angry I got swindled buying the latest Hunter x Hunter vol.

Wasn't it only that one chapter with Kite he didn't redraw for the tank? 'cause I kinda dug the unreal 'what the hell is going on here' effect, unintentional as it may have been.

Which HxH chapter is the panel that Robby posted from?

@Maxy:
But the accusations of cancer and long-term illnesses and stuff are just the idle speculation of types who'll believe anything, like that Zombie Powder was popular and Kubo was just a troubled artist, or that Dragon Ball AF is a real thing.
As for accusations of being unprofessional? I call bullshit, as Weekly Shonen Jump is a pretty harsh mistress and often removes the social life of those working in it (y'all remember the Nura guy's schedule? Mental). To be in a position where your popularity is sound and you're able to spend time with your wife and kids, in a magazine that can be that difficult to not only work in, but to perform well in? Fuckin' EARNT.
You might have a point except that
1. Togashi chose this career path and has chosen to continue on it. Whether the amount of time mangaka spend for weekly releases is insane or not, the fact that he refuses to do his job on a regular basis is certainly unproffesional. Togashi could go to another magazine (either outside shueisha, or even just a monthly magazine). Unless he has a very good excuse that makes it impossible for him to draw, that's really unprofessional
2. Fixing things in volumes (which he isn't even doing anymore) doesn't change the fact that he's giving absolute scribbles to weekly readers. In fact, it almost compounds the insult and says "I know you read it already, but if you want art that is somewhat decent you'll need to cough up more cash". I'm not saying Togashi is intentionally oing this to make more people buy the volumes, but at this point, if he won't even put in effort weekly when he isn't on hiatus, he might as well just release volumes and stop running in Jump altogether.
3. Togashi does nothing to make his life easier. He has no assistants. He could go monthly as well. He could find someone to do the art, which would put a lot of the load off of him as well as stop the scribbles. It doesn't even need to be an amazing artist, since Togashi was never more than decent himself. There are a ton of ways TOgashi could make things easier on himself instead of skipping off of work for long periods of time, but he chooses NONE of them -
I'm thankful to Togashi. He provided us with that image, and now it can just be used as shorthand rather than saying all those things every time.
-
Would you hire assistants when you know how small your output is? It'd be a waste of money and a useless experience for the assistants themselves.
I'll agree that he should move to another magazine, but one does wonder if Shueisha look at his ongoing popularity and sales when he does get published in Jump, and choose to keep him there, regardless of the hiatuses. He's super-popular and junk It'd be interesting to see if he has any impact on circulation numbers when he's in the anthology compared to normal. To say nothing of the fact that it's a symbiotic situation that might be replicatable anywhere else. Like the SQ editorial team might not be willing to chance it with him (unlikely, given that they have so many authors who can't put out material on a regular basis, but it's an example)
As for someoen else doing the art, authors tend to be attached to their own creations, so i can't see it. Though I do wonder, how many creators in manga switch artists mid-publication. Or alternately, how relaunches with different artists like some of the Nagai sequels and junk do compared to the material as handled by the original creator. Those are all good arguments, but they can all be balanced out. It's all incredibly awkward. And I'm still more inclined to respect Togashi for making sure to have time for his actual life (video game addictions aside), instead of going through the painful process so many other creators do, even if it does make him seem a bit of an arse to his (still incredibly willing) audience
-
That's pretty much his own damn fault though. He COULD have assistants like any normal artist (or…there is his Sailor Moon Wife too),
You know, what happened to her? Apparently she hasn't made anything since 2006.
-
You know, what happened to her? Apparently she hasn't made anything since 2006.
Kids, family, not actually ever needing to work again because Sailor Moon is a ridiculously big franchise. Stuff like that, I'd say.
-
It does, but not for long term. Isn't that obvious?
Oneshots are one thing, but if a serialization ends, something has to take its place.no no…my point was about no. of serializations running...is it constant,so that to put one up another has to be scrapped...?
more precisely, say HXH is on hiatus as usual and in the meantime all new series that started are actually gaining popularity..mixing up with Gintama,Bleach,Beelzabub(and perhaps Naruto,to make forumers here happy:getlost:) etc....we are seeing unusual bottom five and ever fluctuating....what happens then when HXH comes back....?..sure they can't force old mangas to end(heck, they couldn't even forced Bleach to end) and canned down potentially good new ones....--- Update From New Post Merge ---
We need a banner at the top of the subforum that reads MIURA DOES USE ASSISTANTS in big bold letters
Miura waste lot of times by playing Idolmaster…

In theory the HxH spot is always open, with it being worth the extra 20 pages shueisha'd have to add for it, and i think there have been instances of it returning and not having a series cancelled at the same time, but I'd have to actually check and I am exceptionally lazy.

Unless he has a very good excuse that makes it impossible for him to draw, that's really unprofessionalMany series of weekly magazines don't have a weekly schedule. Take the Morning from Kodansha, half of its series are not weekly. Billy Bat had only 22 chapters in 2012 and nobody calls Urasawa unprofessional. It's just that it is more uncommon for mangaka of the Shonen Jump that Tagashi stands out. The sketchy art is something else but last time it was only 2 chapters and one of them was even quite cool this way.
-
If he could go in a monthly schedule in WSJ or other magazine, even keeping the page count the same, it wouldn't be as controvertial.
-

But Togashi chose to work in JUmp. And being common doesn't mean it's not unprofessional either anyways. And besides which, there's a difference between essentially biweekly, or even monthly, and taking half a year or more off. Hell, Togashi's longest hiatus lasted more than 70 issues, so more than a year. You can;t consider that proffessional
-
If the hiatuses were scheduled and had a regular rhyme and reason to them, it'd be one thing. For instance, if he did 10 chapters, then took 10 weeks off, then did 10 chapter. That'd still be abnormal for jump, but at least regularly scheduled and predictable.
But… they're random. Get an unspecified amount of chapters, then get an unspecified length of break. When he comes back it might be for 10 chapters or 20, and then his break might be 6 months or 16. Its that randomness that makes it less professional and gives the impression of he doesn't give a fuck. (That, and the scribbles.)

The most annoying thing is that rather then tie up the election arc and not bring up anything new the guy brings up massive setup in the final chapter before his next hiatus.
-
Speaking of which, minus the Kurapika movie tie-in chapters, it's been almost one year exactly since the last hiatus started.
-
The breaks did have a formula for a while, where he was back 10, gone 20, or something similar, but that only went across about two returns before going out the window. As for it hitting a year since the last hiatus, I'd probably call this period as its time to return, unless Togashi counts his Kurapika work and stretches out this gap more.
The setup at the end of the last hiatus is a savvy bit of comic-ing to be sure. If it just ended with the election readers could choose to jump off and forget, but by giving a proper setup as to where it'll go next people still feel invested. It's a dick move, but a clever one.
-
@No:

Well yeah, the series would be OVER if he ended it on the previous chapter. He had to throw out that random from nowhere cliffhanger promise or else… well, that'd be the end of the series.
....
Good thing I never read that last chapter.
-
For me, I fogot about that last chapter and just think the series is over, way easier to deal with the hiatus like that. You know the feeling when you see people still discuss DB power levels and stuff when the series is long over? Well I feel like that when I see the HxH thread.
-
I feel like that with threads to anything with a significant fanbase, but then I'm an arsehole.
-
I dunno, I still talk about series long after they have happened. After all aren't there always going to be new fans who weren't into the series as it was running or was at a particular arc? As it happens last night/ early this morning I just finished rereading the second Hxh arc. Read it online since by the time I started buying Hxh volumes the early ones (1-7) were out of stock in my local comic shop. It always felt kind of wrong rereading all my other manga from the start but not with Hxh, so I decided the scans were fine.
-

Well for me One piece is a monthly comic as I read it once a month, for me Naruto ended in the its final chapter of Gaara Vs Lee and you know bleach ? It was good but very short comic something about 20 chapters or so. it ended when main guy returned home from soul society… -___- What I'm saying is we can think about things in certain way to make it easier, but until I read on the last page of HxH - "and so this story is complete" the manga will remain ongoing. Is it frustraiting? Hell yeah : (
-
I don't really get the whole sulking thing, honestly. Just go enjoy other things and don't think about it, and before you know it it'll be back.
-
Yeah, I guess like… what, well over 50% of the people here aren't paying to read Hunter x Hunter, so they got no real stock in whinging? fair point.
-
@Maxy:

Speak for yourself. I bought the volumes.
-
Actually Max I would but my local comic shop doesn't sell them anymore. There was nothing after volume 25, the last volume I was able to buy. It must be great for people who still blindly love Naruto and Bleach, those are all over the place.
-
@RobbyBevard:

Did I say 100%? ;)
Besides, I dig your complaints, as you've brought up properly annoying stuff like the incomplete art, which is a huge issue.
(also speaking for myself? I buy the volumes. Legit manga wherever I can, man)
@Friend of Luffy and Gon: Fair enough, if there's no other venue to go through to get your hands on 'em, man. Piracy's a black area, but lack of availability is a pretty good argument.
Oh god, I shouldn't make piracy arguments, I'm nowhere near a saint myself (lord knows I try, but money's a tricky thing sometimes, innit)
EDIT: Eh, I suppose I shouldn't actually assume how many people do or don't pay, it ain't my business, and everyone here could be straight-up supporting this stuff, so sorry if anyone gets annoyed by the (literal) half-accusation

Not to rekindle any fires on the whole togashi is lazy thing: but the hiatuses sure arent helping it either.
-
To be honest Max, when I eventually move to Japan aside from whole runs of stuff that doesn't exist in England, such as Saint Seiya I plan on buyng whole runs there. Half my bookshelf atm is manga, and when I move my niece and nephew are getting the whole lot.
Although in fairness, it's probably going to be a few years before I get to Japan if I ever do, so I would rather concentrate on my American comics which would be harder to get there.
Edit: yeah Arc that's a valid point.
-
Please, not this "you can't say anything unless you buy" shit. We're not sending letters of complaint to Shueisha, we're just discussing our opinion on a website.
Before I get bashed here, yes, I have bought tons of manga volumes.
Doesn't mean I own everything I've read, which would be impossible. That won't stop me from stating my opinion though, be it favorable or not. -
Amazon JP has a bunch of manga of early canned, and probably some of the more popular ones in kindle, for about 4$ (like 300 yens)

Doesn't mean I own everything I've read, which would be impossible. That won't stop me from stating my opinion though, be it favorable or not.but that isn't what I'm saying. I'm saying that it'd be odd for people who don't buy the comic to be affronted by the hiatuses (hiati?), seeing as ultimately they're getting it as free product.
and as much as i'll be like this about stuff, it's not a reason to bash someone unless they're intent on acting like the entitled sorts elsewhere who don't think they have to give something back. you've said you own tons of manga, so clearly you care and that's pretty important. That's… basically it's the best that can be asked for most of the time.
@maxterdexter: i've still gotta work out if the kindle manga can be bought using another country's system (surprisingly some manga like say hello to black jack is on the uk store for the kindle in japanese, so I guess there's some crossover). I mean if not i'm just gonna invest in a cheap Japanese one and use that. the savings add up pretty well, after all.
With amazon Japan they have a fair mountain of older jump manga in poor nick for about a yen a pop, sans shipping, so if you're close enough to Japan or willing to bite a bullet on the high international rates it's a pretty good way of obtaining stuff. That... admittedly doesn't see any money go back to the creators, because it's usually used, but it's still pretty nice. hopefully more end up on the kindle option so that i can actually get stuff in a more supportive way.
And really when we're talking stuff only being available used... well, raws and fan-translations become pretty much an equivalent, don't they. huh. interesting, i should think more about this before i do my thing about it.
-
@RobbyBevard:
Speak for yourself. I bought the volumes.
Same here. And waiting for volumes 31 and 32 to be released in Brazil in a few months.
I love piracy though. Wihout it I would never have found a bunch of great mangas.

Hmm is Edison out of the safe zone yet or does it have a few weeks? I haven't really been paying attention to its serialization, but I do look forward to when it is booted (but that will probably happen after HJ,CM,KS are kicked out). No word on whether Medaka Box will be ending in the coming weeks?
-
Edison has a couple of weeks left, by our measurement.
hmmm… disappointing for Soma at seventh, but its deluge of colour pages coming up balance it out, so i can deal.
-
Woah, I didn't notice it at first, but Naruto beat OP that week? Oh…wait, its the Neji chapter. Hahahah...yeah makes sense. Most probably fell for the whole "emotional scene" and were convinced that Kishimoto is actually going to leave Neji dead...hahah right.

Medaka is entering a new arc, so no, it will not die yet.
Too bad for all the tombstones carved. They will come handy one day.
-
if i not mistaken, its the power of NaruHina that overtake OP this time.
-
Huh, was that Souma chapter the one with Maria of the Polar Star being the one to eat Souma's cooking?
-

nope..it's the chapter after that one….Naru-Hina.....
also heard that no Naruto next week...is it true..?
-
Oh that's right, my bad, still my point stands about the whole "emotional scene" with the inclusion of Naru-Hina bullshit.
-
Great news about the 3 consecutive color pages for Souma.
With Medaka not ending this week (which would have made a full volume), we can expect a minimum of 9 new chapters. So I guess this won't be small epilogue arc.
-
They will come handy one day.
Let's make good use of these, and bury down Kiruko and Hungry Joker or Cross Manage.
-
I'm not even bummed about Kiruko anymore. it's gonna make a nice 2-3 volume set hardly anyone'll buy, and that'll do.
Also dat AssassClass cover… damn
-
If Edison sinks like it should after it's 8 weeks of immunity, it could save one of the bottom 3.
-
Woow, Korosensei looks so fucking ominous. what a sweet cover
