Yeah Jimbei is really a necessity, he's an entirely different character, plus it helps breach the gap of the whole racism thing.

LOL…i know this is kinda random, but am i not right? the only prominent group not represented yet by the strawhat crew is a former marine and a logia. (yeah, luffy's connected to the marines but he never directly represented it)....and as far a buying public (shounen market) is concerned, a tsundere (in sense of gokou-vegeta) is still not in the crew.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
you could even argue that a fishman is already being represented even without jinbei since sanji got the blue walk.
-
Not counting Jinbei( Cuz I know he will definitely join),I think there will be one more devil fruit user that will join the mugiwara crew and I think another lady will join them.
-
I expect 2 more people to join. One during the Big Mom saga (Jinbe) and the other during the Kaidou saga (???).
-
Why Oda is taking that long to add another member to the crew?
Luffy completed 9 members in ch. 489.
Now, we will reach 700 and no one joined :(
I hope ch. 700 is one of the important chapters in this regards. -
Why?
The thousand sunny is sailing with them on their adventures. It openly fly's a pirate flag unlike hiding its affiliation with the strawhats and still a princess.
I thought for sure people would recognize the strawhats ships as a PERSON ever since we learnt what we did about their prior ship the Going Merry. The strawhats I'm sure see the thousand sunny as a "nakama"
There was lots of talk in this thread about how strange half the crew is from Brook, Franky, Chopper and so on, so what's so strange about a ship being a "person"
Yeah true that… Can't wait for Thousand Sunny vs BB's ship X
But we will know for sure if the next nakama gets the chapter titled "The Ninth". Poor Thousand Sunny will probably leave the crew and later on get a number as well after a touching comeback

I hope ch. 700 is one of the important chapters in this regards.Well you know, there was that whole thing with Ace, Whitebeard and all the marines…
Besides, we did get a crewmate out of it. He just hasn't officially joined yet. -

Luffy completed 9 members in ch. 489.
Now, we will reach 700 and no one joined :(
I hope ch. 700 is one of the important chapters in this regards.Well lets remember we can't go by 'how many chapters has past', recently there has been 3 arcs that seem to take entire year to read butt he time within the arcs are hardly more than a day.
The amount of time since 489 can be said to be very limited and fast paced esp considering the events thats happened.
Before the timeskip, we got to see some downtime of the Strawhats. Even after the fights at Arabastra, and Water 7/Enies Lobby, they got some serious down time. Ch 489 showed the party after Thriller Bark battle and after that the only real downtime was at the Red Line right before meeting Keimi. From that they went to fight the flying fish riders to the fight at the aution house to getting seperated. The events of the Whitebeard war? The year+ it took us to read about Luffy breaking into Impel Down to the end of the war, that covered about 24 hrs or less storywise. Then there was the separation. Fishman Island happened in a day, same with Punk Hazard. What we don't know if there was a day or two between end of FI battle and leaving the island. Even if they waited 2-3 days before leaving it, that means its been less than a week they have reunited after the timeskip.
We need to look at events=
Brook joined at end of Thriller Bark, they find SA only to get separted for two years before reuntiing, and less than a week has happened since the reunion. Thats very compressed and limited in who can join. Luffy did ask Jinbe (though he said he had tot ake care of something) so its not unusual at all. -
That joke has been played out since Slayers.
Lina Inverse would fit in great with the Strawhats actually. Wacky antics, food fights, mass destruction, only doing good because its the right thing to do not because she's a technical goodguy…
-
I was watching Marineford and I was thinking, Marineford would have been so much cooler if all the Straw Hats were there. Imagine Sanji and Zoro wrecking everbody, and a cool ass entrance too.
Pretty sure they would all have been fodder except maybe the monster trio who wouldn't be too ridiculous.
-
So, i just noticed the whole zoan-discussion on page 99…
People were saying that 2 zoans woud be kind of sameface, and i agree with that to a certain degree. However, imagine some kind of reptilian zoan: that would certainly not feel like a Chopper ripoff since chopper is a mamall, and a reptillian zoan could have a great amount of natural abilities, other than transforming. Poison is what first comes to mind. A chameleon zoan would grant invisibility. A salamander zoan would give the user firebreathing powers (because logic and Fairy Tail). A frog zoan could give the user sound-related powers, poison and a long freaking tounge.
And Chopper with his cute and naive-theme would be the complete opposite of a reptillian since most reptiles are creepy, sinister and cunning. So another zoan woudn't necesairily become to sameface with Chopper, and could on the other hand be pretty uniqe.
My two cents :p -

Hah yeah I guess you're right. She also meets a requirement I think the crew needs if they add a female. I want her to be short. Not teddy bear sized like Chopper, but at least below Nami's shoulder. Every new crew member we've been getting since Robin have been freakishly tall and taller than the last. Although I think Jinbe is shorter than Brook…Not sure though. Sizes are kinda all over the place sometimes.

Not too sure what Jinbei's height is (someone should ask SBS) but yeah, tallness is a running factor. Luffy/Zoro/Sanji/Nami/Usopp are all around the same height, but Chopper tops all of them in Heavy Point. Robin's taller than Nami, and Franky/Brook…..haha, I don't have to say more.
But funny you should mention size. Wasn't one of the arguments used against Jinbei is that he was too big to fit through Sunny's doors?

If Franky can walk through door with Mecha arms without much side stepping then Jinbei can suck in his gut if need be. Franky is most definitely the broadest of the crew.
-

They would still be over their heads. Luffy had trouble there, its part of what convinced him to train (along with Ace's death and the Kuma separating the crew) for 2 years.
Yeah IF Zoro & Sanji were there, Luffy would have some help, and they still would have gone a rampage, but they would still be over their heads.
Just like the Franky Family was at Enies Lobby. In ch 435 the Strawhats were talking how they didn't get a bounty though "The Franky Family wrecked havoc over there (Enies Lobby)" , [HIDE] [/HIDE]
they admitted the family can fight, but doesn't change how they were outclassed.
The same would apply to the Strawhats, even the Monster trio, if they were at the War. -

Brook is 8'8", Jinbei is over a foot taller than him at 9'8". Therefor making Jinbei the tallest if he were to join the crew. I sort of don't like that because it ruins Brook's neat aesthetic of being the tallest yet just a twig. Not that there's anything wrong with Jinbei's design though.
On another note, Franky is 7'10"(as opposed to 7'5" which was his height pre-timeskip). Not really relevant but it's another pet peeve of mine when he's drawn to be taller than Brook and stuff.

Color me surprised! Then again, Moria and Kuma are over 20 feet tall…..
And while I agree Brook's little set-up is great, it's just something very minor we'd have to deal with if Jinbei joined. Like Cyclone said, the next crewmate is taller than the last, har har.
-
Whenever I see Shanks crew, the Red-Hair Pirates
!
I feel like they need some bigger members, I know they have Franky but Jenbei would be perfect for the look.
Not only that… Jenbei can be a very big help if any of the Straw Hats Devil Fruit Users fall into the ocean. I feel like Jenbei is a must have for his ability in water, he can help big time with the possibility of DF users and quickly swim to bring them up. Another DF user would be too much trouble for the Straw Hats

You count sunny as part of the crew?
Oda counted the Merry as a crewmember, so its only fitting that the Sunny is as well.
-
Ok let say Jimbie joins, so that will mean- Sanji will no longer be the fastest swimmer in the crew?
-
Ok let say Jimbie joins, so that will mean- Sanji will no longer be the fastest swimmer in the crew?
Is Sanji really the fastest of all the crew? I know he's one of the fastest but its not clear he's the topmost.
When Sanji said he was the fastest swimmer, he was refering to the ones there at that lake; Zoro & Brook. Meaning he's faster than Zoro.
Its implied Sanji's faster than Nami as he comments on her 'weak body'.
Luffy, Chopper & Robin are same as Brook, they can't swim.
That leaves Usopp and Franky. Some may think that Franky's cyborg body would make him slower. But Usopp has always been shown as fast on his feet. He was shown to be fast enough to stay up to Brook (who's also been shown as fast runner) WHILE he has Zoro slung over his shoulder and running from a PX. Usopp's speed also took Aokiji by surpirse when he ran off with Robin…an act he repeated again with grabbing Robin (again) and running away with her from the bad guys (this time CP9)I have to say that Sanji is one of the top two fastest swimmers of the crew. I am not going to choose between Sanji and Usopp yet on who is #1 and who is #2, since we've not seen Usopp swim post-timeskip. Until we see that, its not a clear-cut choice

the reptile or whatever zoan will still have the power of transformation….which is basically chopper.fire breathing is franky's and invisibility (in a certain degree) is nami....frog, luffy is immune to poison and can stretch.zoro is the opposite of chopper.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
yeah i agree. eventhough jinbe promised he would join. it doesnt mean it would really happen, fishman traits is represented by sanji in some sense (blue walk, swimmer)...would be cool though if jinbe joins since he is the complete opposite of sanji.

its like this for me:
ussop –- fastest runner on land, best eyesight.
sanji ---- fastest swimmer, best foresight
brook ----lightest (can run on water)
nami ---- good on directions, best on predictions.it kinda points out that every strawhat complements each other, one posses what other lacks. maybe its one thing to notice in looking for new crewmembers as well (maybe)

Yeah your right about the Usopp thing and again when Usopp, Brook n Zoro was put in a cage in FI, Usopp challenged Brook to see who is the fastest on water - "Brook running or Usopp swimming"
-

IDK. I have always thought Sanji was gradually developing to be a character based around speed. The guy can do soru and geppou, he's definitely faster than Usopp on land, and I believe that makes him the fastest swimmer with Blue Walk. Think about their timeskip training. Usopp had an all around survival type of training, and what was Sanji's training? Running and fighting, running and fighting. I'm pretty sure as the series goes on Sanji will be the fastest in the water, until Jimbei joins (and I'd argue he'd still be close by that point)
-
ussop is fast when it comes to trickery, survival and escape.
sanji is fast when it comes to fighting and pursuing. and he got finesse. -

Of course Sanji will be the fastest, after all I believe Sanji will fight the fastest man on OP world-(only abilities we've seen) Kizaru "The Troll Lightman".

You count sunny as part of the crew?
What criteria is required for a crewmate?
Do they have to be human? Chopper isn't.
So if you count him you obviously count any animal then, right. Or is it just animals that have devil fruits you would count?
What about an object that was given a devil fruit such as Lasso or alpaccachino or the elephant sword. Would they be crewmates in your eyes or just tools. If tools why? Is it because they were not sentient/alive to begin with unlike animals or Chopper? Or what made you accept Chopper and would not accept an object that was given a zoan fruit?
If its because it has to be alive before hand, then why would the ship not count. Going Merry sailed on its own, talked to people, spoke to the crew, showed itself in physical form to at least Usopp. What is it missing that makes it not crew worthy? Is it because it didn't eat a fruit. Does anything not human have to have a fruit to be considered? The Thousand Sunny has yet to do the things that Going Merry did, but I'm sure everyone knows and expects it will at some point.
So what is it that makes someone eligable to even be considered a crewmate and not just a TOOL.
-
Sunny hasn't counted toward the crew total via chapter numbers though, it's not counted otherwise Brook would've been "The Ninth" instead of "The Eighth".
I think the best thing to call The Sunny or The Merry is "nakama. Which can be friend, comrade, companion, ect. Obviously though, the definition of nakama is loose enough to consider crewmates "nakama" too, but that's just my two cents on the matter. The ships the strawhats own are "friends" to them, not necessarily crewmembers.
-
I look at it this way: No matter how much you may love your ship, if someone told you to get a crew of ten together I doubt you would include the ship in your count.
-
Think of it like you meet a kid in elementary school and he tells you he has ten friends. You find out he's counting his siblings and pet in it which is sort of a weird way to put it, but understandable. Then you find out he's also counting his house and the family car.
You can make an argument otherwise, but the simplest answer is that Luffy will recruit at least two more people (one really, because of Jinbe).

Sunny eats a Zoan fruit/Smily, becoming the 10th official Strawhat.

Thus causing Franky to purchase some of that Kuuigosu (buoant wood they used to float from the bottom of the sea after FI) to add to Sunny's sides to stay afloat.
Viola! just like how DF users can use inflated floaties, the Sunny would have a wooden floatie.[HIDE]This site says 'quigos' but at wiki and other sites its called Kuuigosu

its like trying to make a point without a point when youre forcing to count the ship as a nakama. LOL
they consider him as a nakama….but the headcount is of crewmates.

nah man, the ship is loved but look when jimbei told luffy to remember what he has after he lost ace? no mention of the sunny. its loved like a person of some sorts but its still wouldnt sting as much as say another crew member actually died.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
also, since the grandline, a crew member has joined each saga. chopper was alabasta... robin joined after alabasta which was pretty much the jaya arc (skypiea saga)... franky joined cp9 saga and brook joined whitebeard saga.... might not mean much but i dont see anyone joining this saga either apart from jimbei; only if the yonkou in question is Big Mam though.
-
I like the character Franky but I still think he didn't complete his joining to the crew..
I mean, do you think he will have another arc to renew his recruiting to the crew?
I saw Nami, Usopp and Robin.. but him.. it would be something epic if it's related to Kaido. -

I think the still "unfinished" joining are still Chopper and well yeah Robin. Both are lacking the number chapter title.
But amybe we won't get it after all cuz for Robin's case we already had a secod joining.

Going by your own flow of thoughts just a question how abou Zoro, Sanji, Chopper? who joined before Franky
In Zoro's case.. you could say that the man who was willing to sacrifice himself for Luffy's sake infront of Kuma don't need another joining process. Plus, his speech about Usopp's return to the crew was enough… "Leaving the crew shouldn't be something easy to deal with"
In Chopper's case.. I can say that the monster who found friends at last won't leave the crew.
In Sanji's case.. If we know Sanji's character very well, Nami and Robin can bring him back in one sentence, which is: "Don't leave the crew". LOL. -

I mean.. no past was revealed regarding his blood line of piracy. Nothing of his father and mother except that they are pirates. -

Pffft Sanji is a jerk sexist that doesn't care for anyone besides women.

Merry got me emotional since he represented the bond between Usopp and his island. For the Sunny for me it's a simple cool boat.

Yeah, Surrrre Sunny has these cool weapons and adam wood…but does not trump having a spirit that pilots itself into the midst of a Buster Call undetected, only noticed as the crew boards it.
Most of all, Merry could speak.
Some say tht Sunny will eventually have a spirit ...but it only manifests when the ship is doomed, that is what makes Merry so emotional. -

The only person you can really say he doesn't care about is Zoro
Eh, he did try to give himself up to Kuma in lieu of Zoro at Thriller Bark. The bond between the Mugiwara as nakamas is deep despite the clashing of egos. :P
