If you wanna talk about punctuality, the supreme master of all is Osamu Akimoto of Kochikame.
He is currently going THIRTY YEARS with not a single break from Jump. Ever. Not even once.
That's over 1700 chapters non-stop and holds the guineas world record of longest continuous serialization of shounen manga in history.

Oh yeah I've heard of him. He must really love his work.

Shokutaku no Soma was… well, a standard cooking manga.
Much in the same vein of Curry naru Shokutaku and Yakitate Japan.
The art is somewhat like Koisome Momiji, but much more likable protagonist.Kinda refreshing to see it on WSJ though.

Shokugeki no Soma, a promising new comedy cooking series in Shonen Jack. Shokugeki no Soma, a meaningless loss for hentai manga.
Inspired by the success of his former collegue Akatsuki Akira's Medaka Box' success, tosh has ventured into the cruel world of children comic books.
-
lol, I didn't realize it was shokugeki, a made-up word, and not shokutaku, a similarly spelled ACTUAL word meaning dining table.
-
TOSH! NOOOOOOOOO!

*looks carefully"…..!
Holy crap, it IS tosh! I thought the style of the left girl was vividly familiar. -
Who exactly is this tosh? I haven't been able to find any info on the guy :/
-
He's a hentai/doujinshi artist:
(work safe)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/authors.html?id=10314I would post pics of his work but they are…very nsfw obviously. Just google image "tosh" and "Menkui" if you are really curious. Honestly, I always felt that hentai artists (at least the ones that get their original works serialized) produced pretty high quality art.

I wouldn't call Yakitate Japan anything close to standard. It's hilariously ridiculous.
Glad to see more cooking manga though!

lol look at all of HxH's breaks (休). MIA for a long…long time. Though, I can't wrap my head around Kochikame's ratings. I wonder what it did on Jump 20 to hit rank 1 for that ONE week.
Hmm...was St&rs universally hated/disliked? I can't even remember that serie.

It was on a title page. As this graph show all manga that were given title page automatically #1,

If you don't take hiatus into consideration, Oda is still the king of breaks.

Jesus Christ…does he ever get sick or something?
He must work like a beast. Its a gag manga, which means he doesn't have to worry about plotlines carrying over most weeks, or crazy inspired action shots and angles.
He's been drawing it for 30 years, so he can no doubt do the characters and stories in his sleep, I assume he probably just draws a couple circles for placement and then goes straight to inks without much in the way of penciling, as many artists do when they've been doing it a long time. He doesn't get pulled aside onto projects like working on the anime movies.
Can probably do a full proper chapter in 2 or 3 days. I'd assume he built up a buffer somewhere along the way so that he can miss a week or two due to illness or vacation or whatever and still have a chapter go out. (Similarly, some authors in their prime actually do two different series a week, so very much doing a chapter every 3 days, its not just something Bakuman made up.)
Plus, once you get to like year 5 without missing a week, suddenly you have a record to uphold. Once you're at year 20, let alone 30? You don't let anything get in the way of that streak.
Its still crazy impressive, absolutely no argument. But there are reasons for it. Actually, its a little surprising there aren't more creators that don't miss any weeks, or at least have lengthy streaks. (One Piece didn't miss a week until after chapter 100, and I think Bakuman missed 1 week during its 4 year run, and that was near the end?)
If you don't take hiatus into consideration, Oda is still the king of breaks.
Oda also tends to do 7 or 8 color spreads and covers a year, most authors only do 2 or 3… or 0. Plus he is also writing and designing and overseeing the new movie again and a whole mess of other side projects.
(And I think one of his missed weeks this year was illness related.)
But hey, that's only when you're not counting Togashi's 31 missing weeks last year or his 33 missing weeks this year.
-
One Piece got out of the top five only once in the entire year(issue 23).Wonder what chapter that was.
-
Shokugeki no Soma raws are out already. Fanservice galore, but visually its comedy works pretty well. It certainly has a fresh approach so to say. At least I don't remember any other Shonen Jack manga to defeat the antagonists in such a ridiculous way.
So it's not too huge of a loss for tosh. Besides, the writer is credited for the blandest Shonen Shikku, so it might get cancelled soon. Who knows how it will do in questionnaires, ecchi and comedies don't rank too high, or at least didn't before 2012. Is this a win-win situation?

Thanks. A useful graph indeed.
After the 2010-11 lasting newcomer draught, Shonen Jack has finally added three successful new comics to its line-up - HQ!!, PSI Saiki Kusuo and Assassination Classroom. Or four, if you count Nisekoi. One sports comic, two comedies and a romance. An interesting trend if it can be called one. Is there no demand for battle manga or rather, its supply is underwhelming on a large scale to take away audience from established series? I'd probably go with the latter.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the new hits will fare in 2013.
Jesus Christ…does he ever get sick or something?
He must work like a beast.Akimoto also has a wife. And two daughters. Just like Oda. Except without the breaks.
One Piece got out of the top five only once int he entire year(issue 23).Wonder what chapter that was.
Issue #23 had chapter 664, so the rankings are for chapter 657 I believe.

Something tells me that this Soma guy would fit very well in Toriko world.

So, after reading Bakuman earlier this month and having spent the last week reading though this entire thread—which was a good read, by the way, much like Bakuman—does anyone else imagine the relationship between Kubo and whoever the unlucky bastard is who's in charge of editing Bleach as being reminiscent of Nanamine and Kosugi's from Bakuman? Not that Kubo uses the methods Nanamine does (though that wouldn't surprise me in the least, given his "continuity") but the ego is exactly the same, if not more so, considering Kubo sells, despite his story being so shitty. It also wouldn't surprise me if the aforementioned characters were based on Kubo and his editor, given the fact that Bakuman took a shot at Bleach at least once (that I can recall). It's a funny thought…
Also, on a more topical note, with the raging success of Assassination Classroom, how long do you guys think it'll take before getting an anime? Given that Neuro got one and the hype AC is getting in Japan, I'm guessing it will follow suit eventually and when it does, I'll be watching it for sure.
Lastly, I hope the next Kiruko-san chapter is out soon, because I liked what the first chapter offered. The MC needs to change his ways, though...

where are you getting this info? Every time I ask, someone posts this site: http://hamada.tsukaeru.info/jump/2012/jump1207.html , but it's horribly outdated.
What up-to-date sites are there that keep track of how the series are doing in ToC?

Kubo's real life editor from 3 years ago, Hattori Yuujirou, inspired Bakuman character Hattori Yuujirou.
! Kubo is a horrible writer who sincerely believes himself to be a great writer. However, neither his public speeches nor his ToC comment suggest that he is a horrible human as well, rather the opposite. It's also true that he is popular enough to be less influenced by his editors. The rest - only speculations and assumptions, especially suggesting a Nanamine-Kosugi relationship.
Also, on a more topical note, with the raging success of Assassination Classroom, how long do you guys think it'll take before getting an anime? Given that Neuro got one and the hype AC is getting in Japan, I'm guessing it will follow suit eventually and when it does, I'll be watching it for sure.
Assassination Classroom is a very young comic that reached only the 20th chapter. For example, Toriko's anime started 3 years after the manga, and more text-heavy Bakuman's - after 2 years. Even considering AC's popularity, there shouldn't be any announcements until it has accumulated a more substantial amount of material for adaptation.
-
@Silverblade: I was wondering if there were any comparison pictures regarding the Jump editors and their Bakuman counterparts out there, so thanks for posting that image. And I wasn't suggesting that's how Kubo acts (like a raging ass, that is), just imagining it for humorous effect, based on his slipshod writing. I would hope that if a douche bag like Nanamine actually showed up and pulled what he pulled, in addition to treating his editor like shit, that he'd be out of there so fast it'd make his head spin.
Hm, yeah, that timing seems reasonable. And just to be clear, I wasn't implying that it should get an anime right now, just wondering what the general time frame would be. Anyway, with the way it's been dominating—both in the rankings and volume sales—I'm sure that an anime adaptation is a given once it has accumulated enough material for it, granted that success doesn't taper off beforehand, of course…

So there I was, feeling like looking up some Shinmai Fukei Kiruko-san fanarts on Pixiv. Since it's a new series with only 1 chapter available so far, I thought it would only have like 2, 3 pages of fanarts at most. And so, I entered 新米婦警キルコさん on the search bar and clicked the magnifier symbol right besides it.
There were 10 fucking pages.
Goddamn.Kiruko-san status: Not cancelled

Ten pages, eh? Man, the fan artists move fast! I'll have to check out some of this fan art, maybe there's some good avatar material…

Haha, I compiled that image years ago off video of the show. Good times.

Then thank you, too, Aohige. Also, why did they use a different guy for Hattori's (Akira) model? Not that I hate what they went with, but I think watching a guy who looks like Woz (from E7) as one of the driving forces of the series would've been amusing as hell…

I don't remember them saying why, although Hattori (real) sounded a tad annoyed lol. Maybe Jesus was too handsome.

It's an instant hit in 2ch, she pretty much snagged the "moe-girl of WSJ" spot.
Online popularity doesn't necessary mean reader popularity (Beelzebub and Sket Dance weren't popular with online fans, but they were popular with regular readership) so it's no guarantee yet. -
Heh, well, if Ashirogi Muto had had Jesus backing them, then it would've been kind of unfair.
Also, one of those pieces of Kiruko-san fan art is a sprite for MUGEN; it looks good, too. Man, these people are insane. But yeah, its fate is still in the hands of the readership, so unless these fan artists send in the postcards, it can still go south. I hope it does well, though, because I like Kiruko. If (further down the line) Nisekoi keeps surviving and Kiruko gets cut, I'll be pissed…
-
Kiruko has the "moe-ness" going for it so it at least caters to a particular audience instead of offering nothing like Hungry Joker to everything. Hmm, I can't remember a moe-centric serie on WSJ for a long time.

Akimoto does have several chapters of buffer, but he also writes stories on hot topics of today. So he can't be too ahead of time.
There are times when there's something new in the news, and within the same month, Kochikame does a skit on it.
Because the manga isn't really continuous, it's completely episodic, he probably has safe buffer chapters that doesn't need to be jumped on. (like, popular topic of the year, instead of the month) And shifts the more time-sensitive topic chapters to come out earlier.Mangaka are infamous for being unorganized, and often work overtime to get their chapters out… but Akimoto is completely different.
He runs his studio like a CEO of an effecient office. No overnight, overtime. Assisstants punch in with time card sharp at 9AM, and out at 8PM, with two lunch breaks.
They cannot stay late to finish their work, nor does he himself stay late either. None of the assisstants are rookies, he hires nothing but seasoned artists. -
Akimoto sounds pretty old fashioned. I'm sure working under him does wonders for your resume as an assistant. Wonder how the conditions are for other Mangakas. I only read a little bit about Sawai's assistants (one being the popular author of AssClass).

Man, this getting bad.
The Kuroko no Basket booth where they were going to give out of goods for DVD purchase at Jump Festa is cancelled, just to be safe.
That nutcase who sent death threats earlier this year also sent lethal amounts of poisonous chemicals (hydrogen sulfide, lethal in gaseous form) to Kuroko events around Japan just last month, so Bandai isn't taking any chances at the Jump Fest 2013.
They are also contemplating on canceling all other Kuroko events in the forseeable future.Catch the asshole already. Some people are sick in th head.
-
What exactly is the jerk's problem that he's resorting to senseless terrorism, anyway? Sucks for Jump and for any fans of the series (not to mention the mangaka)…
-
Out of curiosity, why is this happening? Is there context behind this unusual terrorism against a particular jump title?
-
Update: Jump Festa's official announcement is more detailed
http://www.jumpfesta.com/20121122.htmlLooks like Jump Festa 2013 location did recieve the death threats, which led to this decision.
They're also ramping up security at the Fest this year, but haven't said they're going to cancel the fest all together. Just Kuroko suff.Out of curiosity, why is this happening? Is there context behind this unusual terrorism against a particular jump title?
He (or she) claims it's some kind of personal grudge, seems like the terrorist knows the artist himself from college.
The content of the threat suggests the nut is either a she, or a gay man, as it has to do with romantic involvement with a man. Probably a she. Doesn't seem like it has anything to do with the manga. -
Man, this getting bad.
The Kuroko no Basket booth where they were going to give out of goods for DVD purchase
Could you explain this a bit ? Is it like a contest or something ?
And yeah, this is ridiculous. I mean, fuck's sake if you have a problem with just the guy, why do you think "Oh, I'm gonna try killing tons of innocent bystanders, that's exactly the right thing to do when my advances aren't being met !" ? I know the person is probably fucked in the head, but still.
-
@No:
Could you explain this a bit ? Is it like a contest or something ?
That was specifically Bandai's booth, I think they were going to hand out "thank you" gifts to people who bought the Kuroko DVDs.
As for Jump Festa, they cancelled the stage play, booth, and all other Kuroko related showings.
It kinda sucks they have to give in to terrorism, but they are just a corporation at the mercy of terror, police need to track the suspect down.
The suspect posted on internet boards, sent packages all over the place, if it's just a crazy bitch with loose screws, you would think he/she left relatively trackable traces. -

And also, I was wondering if anyone knew what Jump's policy is on digital manga, I know that all the art has to be handed in physically, but have there been some creators who do all their actual art digitally? I always thought Pajama no Kanojo looked digital, but I was never entirely sure….
Also, even though a lot of people like to complain about how Kubo operates, I actually really respect him for that. Basically, with his first series he listened to all his editor's suggestions and got totally crushed, so when he did Bleach he decided that most of all he was going to make his manga his way, and hey, it has worked for him. And I personally like Kubo's storytelling, I just really hate his pacing. I think that if he released 3 times the pages a week for the same price, no one would be complainging, but hey, no one here actually buys manga, am I right?

Guys, I just realised.
The only two manga titles currently published in my country are….Naruto and Bleach.
....HELP.
-
So…. where do you live?
-
That's a really good question, in Britain we get what America gets minus a few titles. Of course I can only really say that as somebody who can only travel to one British city so I might be wrong. My point is even we get a fair supply even if we are just buying our stuff from comics shops who buy from American suppliers.

There are worse countries.
Where I live there is not a single manga publishied. Not even one.
The only ones you can buy are in English, and there are only 3-4 shops who sell mangas. In the whole country.
