Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)

ok, ok…since guys here find my theory comical or whatnot (im cool with it)....ill make a bet...

...ill give the exact things that i think would happen on this saga (for smoke and tashi), if these things dont happen, then ill admit im definitely wrong about my smoker/tashigi theory and ill stop posting here for 6 months. lets just leave it that way so we can have a bet. im willing to bet on my theory.

its a better way imo than to explain over and over again. plus we dont need to argue.

im thinking of 2 scenarios:
storyline #1

1. smoker gets left behind in either punk hazard or dress rosa.(presumed dead)
2. tashigi travels with the strawhats.(gets a new sword/technique in wano)
3. gorousei disappointed that the experiment was botched, ordered the assasination/capture of tashigi and smoker and were immediately fired from their positions.
4. tashigi will be captured and will be rescued by the strawhat crew (big battle like with nami and robin)

TASHIGI JOINS

5. many arcs later, the strawhats will encounter the ship of the revolutionaries and smoker is on-board, maybe they will head to baltigo or something after that but what im pointing at is, smoker will join the strawhats as representative of the revolutionary army.

SMOKER JOINS

storyline # 2

1. strawhats and smoker (and law) will head to dress rosa to defeat doflamingo
2. tashigi and G5 brings the kids back to their hometowns.
3. smoker will fight luffy and loses, luffy invites him to the crew.
4. gorousei disappointed that the experiment was botched, ordered the assasination/capture of tashigi and smoker and were immediately fired from their positions.
5. smoker still with the strawhats, learned of their dismissal and tashigi's capture.

SMOKER JOINS

6. tashigi will be rescued by the strawhat crew and smoker (big battle like with nami and robin)

TASHIGI JOINS

i wont reply again. if any one of this scenarios never happened until the end of doflamingo arc, then ill definitely concede.

Why would the Gorosei be disappointed at CC's experiment failing? CC is tied to Doflamingo now. He's EX-Marine science division, wanted, and hasn't been supported since he screwed up PH years ago.

Or do you mean gigantification? Because my understanding of that is it's CC's pet project so he can eventually get back at Vegapunk by doing something that even Vegapunk couldn't. Sure he might eventually aim to sell that technology/procedure/drug or whatever to the WG, but it's not like they're aware of what he's doing and supporting him. It'd be quite the opposite really.

umm,,…punk hazard, a government only establishment...doflamingo, backed by the WG officials higher than fleet admiral....weapon of mass destruction which according to ceasar might interest akainu.....it all leads to being the higher uppers in WG behind all of this having under the table deals with doflamingo. who obeys them even as far as killing moriah.

so ceasar is backed by doflamingo, and doflamingo is backed by the WG...i presumed the highest in order is the one who wants these experiments...dont you think so?

the same gorousei (aside from kong, i think no one is higher than FA than gorousei) who killed prof clover and burned ohara, the one who gave permission to spandam to retrieve an ancient weapon and give license to kill just for justice.

maybe its like this:

ceasar (backed by doflamingo)...motive is to beat vegapunk.

doflamingo (backed by WG)....allows ceasar to run free as long as dofla subdues him, allows the insertion of vergo in marine ranks,...in return of giving doflamingo a privilege of not getting heat for his illegal/underground activities.

WG (mastermind)....wants a weapon that could wipe the pirates (or even civilians like the buster call) except doflamingo's (since he is a marine dog) gigantification and is proven way before in the series that would do anything (even killing innocents) to reach their goals....

so the odds of them giving doflamingo permission to free ceasar and conduct the experiment and giving PH as a safe location for it (without ceasar's knowledge that the big boss is WG) is not that low imo.

This in NO way applies to Smoker. Smoker is 100% capable of capturing Luffy, every time he's fought him he's captured him and pinned him down. The only reason Luffy is not locked up right now is because Dragon, Ace and Hancock helped him out. If Luffy was captured, the series would be over and it would end Smoker's reason for being in the story all together. If Smoker chases down Luffy and is unable to catch him every time, its because of circumstance and (soon) Luffy's skill. Incompetence has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Is everyone Luffy defeated incompetent for not being able to beat Luffy? Is Mihawk incompetent for letting Zoro live to surpass him? Is Ussop incompetent for standing up for what he believed in, only to not follow through and lose to Luffy? yeah, you go by the description and also it means failing to do it given many times.

garp and roger could have an excuse because it was told in words, like a legend,…but if we apply it to luffy and smoker, lets say like, smoker missing luffy 10 times, then it likely will appear as a running gag....reason why oda only shown them meeting each other TWICE.

yeah skill has nothing to do with it, but again missing him many times is missing him no matter how you sugarcoat it.

yeah, like mihawk fighting zoro once? and kuina making zoro like an amateur already because of the two times theyve shown fighting?...quantity of things that is shown over and over again got different effect from a result shown only once.

its like hearing sugar ray robinson and jake lamotta fighting 5 times and people saying "its a close fight"...it will sound legendary.

but actually seeing the fight and seeing for yourself that lamotta was getting pummeled 4 out of 5 fights will make lamotta look like a punching bag.

its that kind of difference.

What's wrong with Smoker trying and failing to capture Luffy over and over? That's not going to effect Smoker negatively in any way. One Piece is not above running gags so I see nothing wrong with this being a thing. Smoker is a force of nature and determination, and is a constant threat. Him having Luffy slip from his grasp won't make him any weaker. It just means that Luffy is safe till another day. Like I said, Smoker is 100% capable of capturing Luffy.

of course luffy can redeem himself. but i doubt if smoker loses to luffy he can still be seen as a competent pursuer of luffy of the marines. especially when the only thing that makes him invincible against luffy is his intangibility.

coby, you can give coby as an example, but its rather different from smoker who was strong and keeps on failing (his reputation decreasing) and coby that keeps on impressing everytime he reappears (his reputation is incereasing)

i agree, he is 100% capable of capturing luffy, thats why him failing everytime, (especially if he really loses the fight) will give his identity a dive.

not to say he ends up helping luffy everytime they meet (except marineford)

ok, so dont call it a running gag, but a drop of his identity or whatever…the point is he wont look so good....the thing is whether luffy defeats him now, it still pushes and luffy will have better rivals than him whether in piracy or in the marines...im sure you know who they are...i doubt smoker reaches the endgame as luffy's rival.

so lets say smoker gets defeated by luffy, leaves/gets fired/dismissed from the marines:

revolutionary: dragon already stopped him once from capturing luffy, he cant follow luffy once he is a RA.
pirate hunter: he left the marines,....and now he is working for them again?
piracy: he hates other pirates....
solo: with tashigi? theyd be dead in 2 minutes in the new world.

remember that smoker only got 1 (and i say one) chance to capture luffy and that will never happen. so oda is smart for trying to keep their encounters at minimum to still keep smoker's identity intact but keep him in the story. but if he misses luffy like 5 times? ill presume that his identity takes a dive.

With that logic, why should there be villains or rivals at all? The strawhats have to get their butts handed to them by the villain every time in order for them to be deemed powerful, popular and a major threat to them. youre generalizing…its not that all of them who had this or that will join. but of all the cumulative things i saw as early as in lougetown and was strengthened in alabasta....now here in punk hazard i could say there are more evidences and thats just what im trying to predict/guess.

you got to realize that strawhats are the main protagonists here, whether they crash and burn, they would all get back up and redeem themselves...they got multiple chances.

smoker's character is not, he is a main side character (he is not even a main villain) his character and his goal only got one shot and if he fails, his identity takes a dive....imo, the only way to redeem his character is to turn him into a character who will have multiple chances for redemption...his identity of greatest chaser of strawhats will decrease once he loses to luffy or fail over and over again.

Making a bet like this is just silly. No matter how smart any of us are, we get predictions wrong all the time. There's no shame in it, nor should there be. The one historic case of a punishment was a result of thousands of pages of insistence that it had to be that way, to the point of not allowing other things to even be discussed. You are nowhere close to that level, so just step away from the ledge. It's nice that you're willing to stand behind your theory so strongly, but your self imposed punishment for being wrong is way too overboard. It doesn't help a forum to drive people away just because they're wrong. There'd be nobody left if it worked that way.

Arguing and debating is half the fun of a forum, along with the sharing of ideas and material. There's no need to explain the same thing over and over again. You've made your case and that's fine.

But if you can't defend against the criticism, then people will dismiss your ideas, and that's fine too. If you wind up being right regardless, then you'll have the last laugh. "I don't know" is an answer that won't persuade many people, but it's perfectly legitimate. It works better than deflecting by regurgitating the same stuff over and over again.

I'm not sure Doflamingo is 100% backed by/cooperating with WG officials higher than Fleet Admiral so much as he takes orders from them and probably deals with them for his own benefit while they deal with him to keep him in check, but in either case I suppose that is a possible reason CC's experiment would be orchestrated for them. I just don't think his alignment is solidly working with them to the degree he'd get this WMD project of CC's done in the shadows for the WG just because they say so. Hell, I doubt he'd reveal CC to them until the weapon is finalized.

I was thinking more that the weapon, should it even have a successful exhibition at PH, would be brought to Akainu/the WG after development by Doffy rather than WG tells Doflamingo to make a CC make a WMD. That way Doffy can get some leverage with the massive bargaining power selling Shinokuni would bring to the table. He seemed more out for himself than following government orders when questioned about Moria's escape (laughing it off until criticized then threatening to leave the Shichibukai).

Edit: Aside from clarifying more above, I agree with Urouge on the whole silly betting thing. You're not anywhere near AGOG (despite my reference to him explaining the reason "i'll admit I'm wrong later but until then it's possible" argument isn't very persuasive), so there's no need to pack up and go just because your prediction is wrong.

A character doesn't have to be successful or win all the time in order to be relevant and deemed powerful. Its how storytelling works: Person stands up to main character. Person loses numerous times. Person either quits or is determined to get stronger to reach his goal. One piece is all about goals and dreams. Smoker may not reach his, but it pushes him to keep going, to keep fighting and to get stronger all the time. Sure, Vegeta is a prime example of this trope, but that didn't make Vegeta a less popular character. In fact, Vegeta to this day still remains one of the most popular and iconic characters in manga/anime history. You're making failure out to be a bad thing, when in fact failure only makes people stronger. Just look at Luffy and his crew, Crocodile, Coby, Bon Clay… I think you're forgetting what manga/anime you're looking at.

i wouldnt say 100% that im right, but i say its likely…the manga already gave hints.

doflamingo already mentioned him having connections to guys higher than sengkou way before.

and if doflamingo isnt really backed by govt. why would doflamingo knew about punk hazard? and how did CC escaped from prison?...i say with government permission.

also, the drugging of children is very doflamingo, but the WMD is just gorousei from what i saw in the earlier stories of the series.

law also needed to be shichibukai presumably to know where PH is....so i guess it tells that things such as PH and the WMD is a very confidential matter that can hurt civilians, which cannot be concealed if not backed by lawmakers.

im not implying failure as a bad thing, but a chance for the character to develop/change….smoker had been seeing corruption more and seeing strawhats as good guys more and more...his character is shifting, lets say he either trails luffy because of his pride or his duty or his interest,....still, his character needs to undergo some change and not just get stuck in the whole pursuer guy until the end.

you made a great point with guys like crocodile and bon clay, its exactly what im trying to say with smoker...these characters are static....

and vegeta is gokou's teamate....eerie, because gokou and vegeta got the same personality as luffy and smoker.

definitely not. i think they are still determined to catch them and they are dedicated to their jobs.

but i do think its more of catching luffy because of pride and interest rather than catching luffy because he wants to kill luffy (like akainu)…and also because of the smoker saw of luffy's likeness to roger (in smoker's flashback, he seems to admire roger for some reason...maybe that change over the years due to some incident)

with tashigi, i presume there's more to what is shown about her dream of acquiring swords from bad guys and why she became a marine.

the justice thing is too loose imo,...smoker and tashigi's justice fits well with the freedom of the strawhats.

its been shown that smoker and tashigi are slowly changing stance, their characters can change but their justice can stay the same.

loguetown - smoker saw luffy's likeness to roger, gained interest in him….luffy got away, his pride was at stake.----tashigi's dream was revealed and she was shown as a vehicle for zoro's past.

alabasta - helped strawhats, strawhats helped him. saw luffy and others save a country, tashigi wanted to get stronger, smoker wants them to develop their own justice, gets mad at WG for giving him a shitty promotion and for covering the strawhats good deeds. luffy says he dont hate smoker, hina said smoker almost happy about strawhats' escape.

before water 7 - aokiji got some secret message from smoker

after CP9 - smoker complained about how they cant do what they want because of stupid rankings in the marines, wanted to go to new world to wait for strawhats.

marineford - smoker getting shocked at how marines handle the situation. knew about dragon and luffy's connection.

after marineford - requested for transfer to G5, his close friend aokiji was ousted and garp and sengoku retired.

new world - deducted exactly how luffy thinks, discovered another corruption by the WG, ends up helping luffy again, tashigi being helped by sanji and zoro.

Doflamingo does follow some WG top brass (probably Gorosei) orders, but when he failed to kill Moria he seemed unconcerned and threatened to quit his post as Shichibukai, so he doesn't seem totally loyal is what I was trying to say earlier. And I think the WG is aware of this, but still use him as a Shichibukai to keep him relatively in check compared to if he was a regular independent pirate. The WG backs him and orders him around, but their relationship isn't on friendly enough terms he'd just hand them Shinokuni was my point. I'm sorry, I know I didn't really word that terribly well.

I'm going to say we agree to disagree on Doflamingo because there's not enough info imo either way. Personally I think he'd be more out for himself, using CC's weapon as a bargaining chip to get something he wants even more than Shinokuni, but it's also possible that it's all a big WG conspiracy he's in on, maybe even multiple conspiracies (shinokuni, giant soldiers, things happening on his other islands).

And I wouldn't worry about AGOG. You've stuck to your theory, but you haven't written novels 5 times per page for 3 threads. He was a special case of being really more annoying than insistent. There'll just be comparisons drawn in hyperbole by people (myself included) to anyone who sticks to a choice after several rebuttals. Doubly so if you make a bet like he did. But seriously, whether or not your theory is right shouldn't determine your stay here. Unless you actually do become that much of a wall of eyebleeding text posting, thread stagnating, discussion ignoring, fanboy drone and repeat yourself infinitely regardless of the points brought against you, but that'd take serious time and dedication in a bad way.

Making a bet like this is just silly. No matter how smart any of us are, we get predictions wrong all the time. There's no shame in it, nor should there be. The one historic case of a punishment was a result of thousands of pages of insistence that it had to be that way, to the point of not allowing other things to even be discussed. You are nowhere close to that level, so just step away from the ledge. It's nice that you're willing to stand behind your theory so strongly, but your self imposed punishment for being wrong is way too overboard. It doesn't help a forum to drive people away just because they're wrong. There'd be nobody left if it worked that way.

YES!! Please this! What a breath of fresh air it would be to have someone "tryout" for the crew for a change. We all saw in Sabaody how eager pirates were to join the Fake SH.

You never know, there could be a pirate now with a wanted poster of Luffy hanging against their wall, praying for the day they can be a strawhat. (*Please note that I don't take this last statement that seriously)

That actually sounds like a very interest quirk for a future character … someone who actively seeks out the Strawhats to challenge them and earn a place among them. Whether that person joins or not, it would really give validity to just how strong and respected the Strawhats are becoming.

Interesting idea. It would be even more interesting if Luffy declines the oportunity at first but the eagerness and longing for respect of the new character drives him/her so much that the crew will not have any other option but to give him-her a task to prove him-her worthy. Maybe at that time Ussop could be the one to give the task. It would actually signal how mature of a crew it might have become. Of course this is just me and my fanfiction but I would love to see that kind of progression.

I think the best part of the idea of someone wanting to join Luffy's crew and being forced to do a "tryout" is that if they want to be a Straw Hat, then said character will already have a active dream (to be a pirate!) and a reason to a sail the seas.

Nice one, but me personally will love it more if it will happen like Ace and Whitebeard, Strawhats stops at an island to buy things and at the bar some rude extra-energetic boy/girl is fighting at the bar and he/she sees Luffy and approaches him, then says something like I've been looking for you, I will defeat and take your head and prove to the world that Dragon's son, Monekey D. Luffy is nothing special lol but he/she gets owned but never gives up until he becomes friend with Luffy then joins the crew. Yeah something like what Caribor did but this one will be more serious.

I don't know too much about the New World yet, but it seems to me many of the pirates there are already on stronger more reconized crews than Luffy's or don't want to serve under another pirate.

And I don't know how many grunt pirates would have the courage to leave paradise and follow the Strawhats into the New World so they would have to have almost already made a name for themselves getting to Luffy.

It would be funny if they had been searching for 2 years though

Dude! is not like the New world is full of pirates, they are also civilians living there, a civilian kid may be training and gets stronger as he matures but he only fights off pirates that come to there island OR they may be other islands like Wano with civilians they are really strong. You don't have to be a pirate in other to be strong or to join a pirate crew.

This kid would obviously have to dislike the Marines (or at least, the World Government) and their methods. Maybe from a country filled with corrupt marines? Or where lawlessness is so prevelant it's alarming when you notice the lack of assistance?

I can see them being drawn to Luffy for the first time from the news tidbit that he and his crew stormed Enies Lobby to save of their own.

….Heh, I'm getting ahead of myself. This entire set-up, while interesting and unique, has no character behind it yet. It's merely a hypothetical situation.

Im pretty sure the World Goverment covered that story up and the newspaper article may go more like:

"Strawhats with crew of 60 strong burn down enies lobby and declare war on the World Government"

Again, there's multiple angles where the idea can pull through. I just hope Oda wants to try it out.

That would be pretty interesting. The SH could really use someone with some inside info on the Marines and government. Thing is, we would/will have gotten that with Jinbei, with his past as a Warlord and all.

I would love for that to happen. But if it should happen it would probably first be when Luffy and the others get some new world reputation. And i would love if it was a cool brawler girl.

The character might not necesarily be shallow or superficial. Maybe (s)he is just badly informed. I could see someone who would go all Glitter eyed while seeing the SH crews prowess and being all SUGOIIIIII a la Luffy, I would actually love to see someone who sees eye to eye with Luffy in this terms but whose skills arent exactly top notch. It would be a character who makes the crew run through another whole set of troubles but who in time would get stronger. Who hasnt become stronger in the crew on their own right?

Another possibility I could see is a fan type character (in a funny way and not the annoying "kawaiiiiiiii waaaaaa girls ") who goes, Im gonna kick X like sanji (and breaks a leg) or who tries to snipe someone just to hit franky at the back of his head getting him pissed or someone who tries telling the story of a certain poneglyph mistranslating everything (with robin going " Dont ever open your mouth again"). S(he) might have a mime mime fruit and be a mime him-herself. LOL
