it's weird, after reading the trans, i have all the images animated within my head, this is either all thanks to stephen or the beer.
Chapter 404 "Franky VS Fukurou" Discussion
-
-
Choppers say they he ate the rumble ball too early. I wonder what would happen if he eats one again pretty soon. Maybe it would be a new move for him, or enable some more transformations.
-
Yay, thanks for the translation Stephen.
Now I wonder what exactly the consequences of Miss Goldenweek´s Rainbow Color Trap will bring.
-
stephen's translations is out. check out http://www.mangascreener.com/stephen/onepiece/chapter404.txt
XDOMG: this chapter is just soooooo funny.
I can't wait to see this animated: this might become the best OP anime episode ever. Too bad it will have to wait a few months, at least :( -
Wow Franky is pretty tough. I wonder how Sogeking and Zoro are doing. I wonder if Jabura and Kaku are having thier way with them.

I've always taken the Rumble Ball, its three minute limit, and the way Chopper treats that as a life-or-death scenario to mean that there's some inherent danger in Chopper using too many too frequently. It doesn't seem the gap between them is too bad normally (only a few hours have passed since the group left Water Seven if I'm not mistaken) but in this case Chopper lacks those precious few hours.
Personally, I'd like to maybe see Chopper somehwo manage to fight without relying on the Rumble Ball. Perhaps find some new moves within his normal three forms to fight with.@Onigumo:
Diet coke is still a cola. I was thinking along the lines of…Prune Juice.
Ultimate Coup de Poo!!

I kinda hope not, that would mean that in the Foxy filler arc Toei made yet another unforeseeable mistake like they did with Zoro cutting steal in the Apis arc.
-
Thank you stephen!!
Hahaha, I loved this chapter, it had me rollin'. Just when I thought Franky couldn't get any greater. I can totally see that wrong beverage joke being a running gag, "let's see what THIS does to him. XD And the childish dialogue, bwahaha. I assume that was in part creative paraphrasing on stephen's part, the name calling, it was probably something in Japanese that wouldn't carry the joke over well. -

Not to worry. Should that happen, someone, somewhere will rationalize it in some way .
-
Just another random thought, on the Franky-Fukorou issue: In all other final showdowns, the SHs' were victorious, sure, but still battered, bloodied up and exhausted. Seeing as how Frankys' on full power right now - and has a miniscule bloodloss - it could hint that he has more fighting to do…or at the very least, needs to use his powers for some other thing.
-
Yeah. stephen's translations made it pretty clear that Franky's not through pummeling Fukurou yet; another chapter of barrage is warranted. I'd feel good with just one more chapter, too; that would entail that three CP9 have already been beaten.
Possibly, though, Franky might be out of the fight after this one. As long as he has cola, he can kick major arse; but if he runs out, he's just a strong (instead of super strong) dude.

Yeh, I think there could be some sort of adverse effects to using the 'rumble balls' too frequently, that Chopper hasn't mentioned. Though, I've always had the impression that he just simply cannot use another 'rumble ball' for a set period of time (like the gap between on W7 for example) but there doesn't seem to be anything solid to back that up.

That's not always the case, though. During the Drum arc, Chopper beat Chess and Kuromarimo without being totally bloodied and exhausted, and nobody else really fought, and in the Arlong Fight, Usopp was fine after fighting Chuu and Nami didn't fight at all.
PS - This was the first time Chopper and Franky interracted, isn't it? That was fun to see. ^_^

What did they do?
-
@joekido:
What did they do?
Zoro cut metal here and there in the Apis arc where in the Alabasta arc its established that Zoro cannot yet cut steel. This would be similar to that in the sense that in the Foxy dodgeball game, Chopper ate two Rumble balls in a row. If it's established in this arc that the Rumble ball has a side-effect to overdosing, then it'll become a plothole. Kinda unfair to Toei, its a plothole they couldn't foresee unlike some of their other series.
-
Well, didn't Zoro cut iron chains?
-
Personally, while I don't like to toot my own horn (oh, who am I kidding), I have to say that "first-rate hightailing milquetoast" is one of my favorite lines ever.

I think the Zoro one has an explanation: he could cut steel BUT only after a period of concentration AND with still objects (the steel chains). With Daz Bones, the dude was a moving target and was giving no time to concentrate for it.
Ofc, i could be wrong, here. -
That quote when Franky drank the tea is so funny! And I have known this for a while but never got the chance to tell you all: Fukuro in fact means Owl. So guess whether or not the dub will call him Owl, since that's what it means.
And I still hope that the battle is over. In OP, villain's defeat are always shown in large box that usually takes up to two pages, so I believe Fukuro is down for sure. Fights shouldn't drag too long.

so fukuro doesnt use shigan… its interesting to see how each cp9 has their own variations of the 6 forms; now i wonder whos the kamie specialist!
in any case this fight was an all out slugfest!on a separate note, theres gotta be more to that darn pidgeon than meets the eye!!!
-
Yay forums are back! …and this chapter ROCKED! Franky was too badass in this chapter owning Fukuro's fat ass, yeah! Plus Chopper giving him drinks that aren't cola was pretty hilarioius!
Plus Lucci's response to Spandam was too pimp, no wonder I like this guy. -

Heh, regardless of waht the show stated, I personally just always pretended the chains were iron (a bit more believable than steel).@stephen:

My personal favorite was "As if I would fall for sideburns like that!"
-
hey, i really like the last page spread, and i was bored, so i connected it (poorly) and cleaned it up a bit, if anyone wants to see it.

also, ive put stephen's script in the bubbles, but he says no scanslations, so i cant post it. -
My favorite parts:
Fukuro: You're a dingle-dongle panty.
Franky: Panty?
THAT'S NOT A PUNCH!!!Fukuro: WELL IT FEELS LIKE PANTIES TO ME!!!
and
Chopper: Oh no!! He's right, he's on my side now! I'd better do as he says!!
If I open and close the door in an instant, I don't think that guy'll get out!!Door: (Clack!!)
Chopper: Yoink!!
Kumadori: Yoyoi!! The door, it has opeeeennnneeeee…
Door: (SLAM!!!)
Chopper: Got it!!
-
@Freeman-12:

I think Lucci WANTED Luffy to follow him so he can have his blood. And that will be the downfall of him and Spandam. >D
-
Hmmm, another plus for Franky being a crew member, possible fuel upgrades. I never considered it but as the different drinks have different effects on him, wonder if Oda might toy with super carbonated cola or high-caffeine cola! Sorry if someone mentioned this but this is 17 pages.
-
franky meets the energy drink!
-
Soemthing I noticed, the one thing the normally uber-gullible Chopper doesn't believe right away is the one thing that turns out being true in the end (He didn't believe cola would power up Franky).
-

Ofc, i could be wrong, here.BUT, there was also that episode where they met LT. Fullbody after the Arlong arc, and he shot a cannon at them, and Zoro cut the cannon ball in half? I distincly remember a cannonball being cut in half somewhere around that time.
-
yeah, but he's done that since and nothign suggested any trouble in-between. Plus, do they make cannonballs out of steel? I wouldn't think so really.
-
Franky telling him to put his guard up was the coolest shit in fiction.
I think Lucci WANTED Luffy to follow him so he can have his blood. And that will be the downfall of him and Spandam. >D
Well, I don't really think he wants blood, I think he just has a taste for violence.
-
Well, I don't really think he wants blood, I think he just has a taste for violence.
I meant that as in the expression "out for blood", not literally wanting Luffy's blood. But he might….he is a leopard after all.
-

I do too but … is the canonball made of steel, or iron?
-
i would not rule out the possibility of Fukuro staying stuck in the refrigerator and then perhaps having his own cover story arc. look at Gedatsu he clearly was not done fighting chopper but his fight was finished and he did not appear again for the rest of the skypiea arc. there seems to be a joke villain in every arc and fukuro looks like the joke villain this time around.

IMO it would be a tough competition with Kumadori for that spot and honestly Kaku isn't much better with all that giraffe-action. Seriously they have way more talent as a traveling circus than they do as an assination squad. Fukurou would be the announcer, Kumadori the clown, Lucchi can jump through burning hoops as a leopard, Kalifa is the animal dompteur with her whip, Blueno is the strongest man and Kaku the aerial arobat. Kaku alone could fill the big top as a flying giraffe.
-
Really grateful for the trans Stephen
So Tea makes Franky wavy, what about coffee?
It's really nice to see Kumadori frozen in the fridge, I'm just wondering why he didnt use his shigan or stick to actually try breaking out. Maybe some distance is required to activate them, the fridge I recall isnt a nice place for a person to be imprisoned in. -
That's not always the case, though. During the Drum arc, Chopper beat Chess and Kuromarimo without being totally bloodied and exhausted, and nobody else really fought, and in the Arlong Fight, Usopp was fine after fighting Chuu and Nami didn't fight at all.
True, true…but these are what I see as "lesser" villains. With Enies Lobby the enemies are tough, and the buildup for the battles has been extreme. This is another Major Showdown like Skypea or Alabasta, where all our heroes were pretty much spent.
I mean, it wouldn't feel right if Usopp and Zoro didn't get some serious injuries, no? -
I don't doubt that Zoro and Usopp are going to endure a lot of pain. I just don't think that everyone necessarily has to end up in a bloody beaten mess, but then it's really not over yet, I wouldn't be surprised if Franky ends up doing something that beats him down a bit more, even if it's not from fighting Fukuro.

Ofc, i could be wrong, here.Nah, Zoro definitely didn´t know how to cut steel up until his fight with Mr. 1. He learned to hear the breath of all things there and not to hear the breath of super solid things in movement.
There´s only one explenation for the steel chain thing in the Apis arc = anime screw up. And if Oda should explain the Rumble Ball thing to be like that, that Chopper has to let some time pass by until he uses another one then it would be just another anime screw up.
Rationalizing anime screw ups is a lost battle because the sole inclusion of filler arcs are the biggest screw ups that can at no point be rationalized to make sense with the original story. As long as Oda himself doesn´t screw around I have only minor problems when the anime does it.
On the topic of Franky and different "fuel", I wonder what would happen to him if he´d use something alcoholic. Would we see Drunken Style then?

That would be awesome, but i can't picture Franky actualy drunk. But i would love to see Franky drinking Red Bull, i think you know where im going with that idea. The unstoppable Angel Franky.

Personally, while I don't like to toot my own horn (oh, who am I kidding), I have to say that "first-rate hightailing milquetoast" is one of my favorite lines ever.
It must have been ridiculously difficult to translate that part. However, nothing beats Chopper saying "Yoink." as he retrieves drinks from the fridge. Is that what the phrase actually translated to?
On the subject of Chopper, he has depended on those Rumble Balls to make him stronger for battles. It would be neat if he could adjust his forms through concentration. Even though the "spirit from within" schtick has probably been overused, it seems a lot cooler to me than Chopper just popping another pill.
I personally think Miss Goldenweek is using her color trap powers to disguise herself and the other Baroque Works agents ("whatever their heart desires" as I have seen it translated). If they are far enough away from those Marines, they may be able to escape incognito.
You beat me to it, Duce! I was about to say something about Red Bull and how Franky could cross over to Raftel and become an essential part of the crew (or he could become EVA Franky and then things would just get spooky). If Oda ever wants to make money. advertising is the way to go. Franky could be a marketing machine with this stuff. Either way, I am looking forward to Franky using a Coup de Vent sometime before the end of this arc.
-
What I find a bit weird about the entire Rumble Ball thing is that Chopper seems to be lacking faith in his strenght outside of this medicine.
In his fight against Gedatsu he was worried that the three minutes will be over soon. And right now against Kumadori he´s like "dang the three minutes are over already".
I mean of course points like Guard Point, Arm Point and Brain Point are very helpful in a fight but I´d appreciate it if he´d start to consider his regular forms as helpful in a fight too. Pill are not the answer for problems after all.
-
Chopper reminds me of something I used to watch when I was little.
Ultraman!
-
Soemthing I noticed, the one thing the normally uber-gullible Chopper doesn't believe right away is the one thing that turns out being true in the end (He didn't believe cola would power up Franky).
his problem was that he thought he was just thirsty.

That chapter was really funny. And I loved seeing robin again after a long while. I have the feeling that robin is gonna actually use her powers properly in this arc, she might end up fighting kalifa because i'm not too sure nami's up to the job because kalifa's level has probably raised even more since eating the devil fruit. Plus I wanna see how powerful robin can be when she's serious about helping her friends out.
