Hah, that's great! Popeye the Sailor Man! You rock Malintex.
Chapter 404 "Franky VS Fukurou" Discussion
-
-
Oh, I forgot this. I think Franky's cola power is a clear indication that Franky is a pirate parody of Popeye; not only does he share some of Popeye's distinctive traits, but he gets powered up when "consuming" something. Though Popeye consumes something healthy like Spinach, Franky "consumes" an unhealthy cola; how appropriate for a future pirate, neh?
This also goes along with our former resident bartender; Blueno resembles Bluto from Popeye, both in size and name. Even the Square Sisters resemble Olive Oyl (think: nose, twig-like appearence). Heck, does Zambai like hamburgers?
"If you would buy me a hamburger today I would gladly pay you back Tuesday."
First off, thanks to all that deserve it (distributors, future translators, Oda, etc.), and second, KICKASS chapter! This chapter was so amazing, such a great fight! It seemed a bit short, though…
By the way, a friend of mine managed to roughly translate some of the plot, mostly towards the end. I can't remember too much, unfortunately. However, I do remember things about Chopper helping Franky get some cola. What basically happens is first, Chopper yells at Franky, saying there's no way anyone can be strengthened by soda, but Franky manages to convince him. Throwing the vegetable juice (onion-hair) and the tea (trident-hair) were accidents, but the very serious looking panel with Chopper's thoughts above him was hilarious. It goes something like this, if I remember correctly:
Chopper (with an incredibly scared, serious face): It's so funny... I should throw the right thing, but I need to see more...Something like that. It is probably flawed, though, because my friend sometimes has trouble translating things to English and this was a couple hours ago that he told me this.
-
Why the hell would Oda go through the trouble of drawing a panel showing there's a thunder storm outside if it was just "special effects"? These "special effects" have the same design than Enel's attacks. It's the same design than the thunder strokes shown 3 panels before the punch connected.
Why wouldn't he? Do I have to remind you of chap 372 page 9?
And I believe Popeye had similiar "special effects" with his power ups.
(thx Malintex) -
Great chapter… glad to see Franky finish off Fukuorou that way, though it'd be nice if it were before he drank anything and replenished his energy.
-
Man, this was one of the funniest chapters I'v read in quite awhile. Franky's mishap with his hair and fighting techniques when Chopper gave him vegetable juice and ice tea instead of cola initally. Although once Franky got his cola he went from being a bad ass to being an exteme bad ass. Also I nearly fell out of my chair when Chopper knocked Kumadori into the fridge.
Luffy's returning to normal raises a question in my mind. When Luffy fights Lucci and uses gear 3 for an extended period of time what will the consquences be? We Luffy be the same chibi size for a longer period of time or will he be even smaller for the same amount of time?
-
Why wouldn't he? Do I have to remind you of chap 372 page 9?

(thx Malintex)Those panels are all Franky doing something, he sure as hell didn't show us a huge thunderstorm that turns ennies lobby (the place that is eternally daytime) to night just to illustrate a powerup that hadn't even HAPPENED yet before. The page you just showed, it's just showing franky's abilities, which is totally appropriate.
Look, Franky's really cool, but a thunderstorm doesn't appear over ennie's lobby just because he's about to punch someone, sorry.
-
enies lobby becoming dark all of a sudden is weird. i doubt dragon would interfere in the fights but i'm sure he is aware of what can happen if the buster call was called. i bet dragon has a real big interest in luffy now that he declared war on the world goverment and the fact that robin is with him. if the lost history exposed the world goverment as being an evil entity then dragon would benefit alot so that's why he's going to perhaps help the strawhats out if a buster call is indeed called on enies lobby. btw the only reason i think dragon helped luff at logue town was because he smiled in the same way roger did when he was executed. dragon probably saw some some potential in luffy and spared him. i doubt dragon would of helped luffy if was crying and begging for his life.
-
Well, it's possible that the storm will make the strawhat's "getaway" more possible, and it's possible that we'll never know if the storm is natural or caused by a higher power (not dragon but fate), etc.
When they went to the grand line, the winds sure blew in their favor, if I remember rightly.
-
Man, I really want to see a translation of this.
I don't know if Enies Lobby becoming dark was just an effect or what, but I do know that it's being kept light by that wierd device that was shown as Rocketman approached the island. It would be kind of cool if Nami somehow short-circuited it with Clima-tact.
-
Ooh, I can imagine it now. Luffy is fighting Lucci, and all the Strawhats arrive, battered, beaten, but victorious. They hold up their keys in succession, lightning strikes Enies Lobby, destroing the tower of justice in an enormus explosion that kicks fire and dust into the sky. Then Spandam panics and uses Buster Call. o.O
-
Or if a buster call is initiated, this time Robin really WILL user her ability to sink all the ships. And then hold Spanda in her clutch long enough for Franky to use his metal fist with all the remaning cola power behind it.
-
If Kumadori breaks out of that fridge he's gonna be seriously pwnt.
-
Buster Call doesn't appear to stand a chance against the Strawhats. If T-Bone is a ship butcher, Zoro can cut ships too. If Franky has cola, he can use a coup-de-vent. If Luffy has meat, he can use Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazookas. Nami can use her Clima Tact, Usopp can use his Firebird Stars.
Bam. Five ships down just like that.
-
Just when I thought the lightning argument is settled, somebody is disagreeing again. Okay, we'll bet the next chapter, you WILL NOT see anything suspicious in the sky, and I AM willing to bet on it!
And I say Fukuro should just stay defeated. While fights are very good, it shouldn't drag too long. Who cares if he doesn't have anything special?

While I at first thought otherwise, but this is right. Fukuro's real gimmick was he was the weakest (or weaker) CP9 member, as well as a giant with a zipper mouth. He got thrown by this mouth, used some more variations of the six forms, and finally–Franky proved he was ultimately stronger by knocking him out at full power. Maybe he'll say something interesting before he passes out, he likes to talk.
-
Lightning did not strike Fukuro. That's just the impact splatter from Franky's blow going off in various directions. As for Dragon showing up. It'd be sily for him to show up just when the SH are about to display their new skills. Then what? He intervens and we wait 10 more chapters to learn about gear 3? Naaa I don't think so.

I could see Dragon taking advantage of the situation, bypassing the CP9 Strawhat fight, and going to raise hay at Marine HQ..
By the way, is your name based off what I think it is?
-
I think tose clouds and lightning are a foreshadowing for the arival of dragon
and that doesn t mean that he will intervene in the fights but maybe he wants to watch and maybe if a bustercall is summoned he can help a bitwhat I want the most is to see Dragon join the strawhats, after Franky ofcourse if that happens they will be 10 if we count the ship as a member
so they won t have to search for a new member and the real badass arcs would begin. -

No he stole my name. I had this name for 23 years now. I ought to sue.

No, the only thing that's settled is that Fukuro wasn't hit by lightning when Franky punched him.
We have to wait till next chapter to find out whether
Is really a storm over ennies lobby or if it's just an 'effect' to illustrate franky's powering up with his cola.
-

Weakness isn't the gimmick I was referring to; rather, it's a unique way of battling someone that is likely to ensure victory during battle. DF users already have their gimicks; the application of their Devil Fruits (hence, Califa and Kaku are more dangerous than their douriki indicates because they have gimmicks AND Devil Fruit powers). For everyone else, some completely imaginative power is required to survive among the harshness of the world.
Size could work, but Kumadori's huge and also has heard the "call of hair" as it were. Furthermore, Fukurou's size isn't working to his advantage, unlike the giants, because all his girth does is make a bigger and (arguably) slower target (by comparing his body to the size of his arms/legs).
Every minor character in OP potentially capable of fighting a Strawhat has a gimmick, even Nero (his "line" Rankyaku and sniping abilities). While I'm perfectly content with Franky simply beating Fukurou down before Fukurou could use his abilities, I'm certain he has a gimmick somewhere.
Furthermore, his weakness of divulging secrets is likely going to play a role in this battle, too.
…
HAHAHA, random thought. Franky and Kumadori would fit in so well in Bobobo-Bobo-Bobo. Heck, ANY One Piece character would fit well in that show; since both were animated by Toei, it's a pity a crossover episode never occured.
-
I thought Fukuro's gimmick was flying around everywhere and holding himself up in high places. He probably has something else up his sleeve as well, and it's very possible that he wasn't taking Franky 'seriously' and he didn't realize the guy's cola would make him this much stronger. Now that he sees how strong his punch is (if he gets up) he'll probably be a lot more serious about the fight, he might even see if his mouth has uses (besides giving away trade secrets).
-
Man, this is stupid. Neither Dragon nor AoKIji nor Ace will show up until this arc is finished. This is not Naruto or Bleach or DBall. This is One Piece for god sake. And since when Dragon can change the weather anyway. I read loguetown arc more than 20 times already and never it stated that Dragon is the one who responsible for the weather. I mean we know what Ace, Aokiji and even Doflamingo capable of when Oda introduced them. But not Dragon. He's a mysterious person and his ability will always be mystery until Oda bring him back. If you don't believe me, re-read the manga from the start, and you will know it's not like Oda to bring unrelated character into the arc until it's finished.
-
That might be strategy, but not really a gimmick.
Here are some examples.
Buggy Arc:
Mohiji: Richie.
Cabaji: Acrobatic Swordsmanship.Kuro Arc:
Siam & Bucchi: Decieving clothes, tag team battles, cat-like claws.
Jango: Hypnotism, Razor Disc.
Kuro: Finger Swords.Krieg Arc:
Krieg: Diamond Studded Gauntlets, Heavy Armour, Hidden Weapons.
Pearl: Iron Wall, Pearl "maces".
Ghin: Weird Ball weapon.
Mihawk: Swordsmanship.Arlong Arc:
Hatchi: Eight Sword Style.
Kuurobi: Martial Arts.
Chuu: Water Pistol.
Arlong: Saw Nose, absurd strength, huge sword.Whisky Peak:
Vivi: Peacock Knives.
Mr.9: Iron Bats.
Igaram: Saxomophone, Hidden Hair Guns.
Ms. Monday: Strength.Little Garden:
Ms. Goldenweek: Colour Trap.Drum:
Kuromarimo: Sticky Hair, Boxing(?)
Chess: Archery.
Kureha: Throwing Knives.Jaya:
Sarquiss: Big Knife.
Shoujo: Singing.
Masira: Strength (I guess).Skypiea:
Shandians & Skypieans: Dials.Davy Black Fight:
Ehh, not sure.Water 7:
Franky Family: Cannons, Guns, Swords…almost every weapon available.
Paulie: Ropes.
Tileston: Strength.
Other guy: Cannonade?
Kaku: Swordsmanship.
Califa: Rose Whip....
In accordinance, the Strawhats without DFs also have gimmicks; Nami has her Clima Tact, Sogeking has Kabuto and his sniping abilities, Zoro has his swordsmanship, Sanji has martial arts, and Franky (assuming he's in) is a cyborg with a diverse number of powers.
-
Fukuro might be a cannibal he does have a large mouth maybe that could be his gimmick. He could try to eat franky and then close the zipper
-
By making a prediction of that happening, you have assured us that it will NOT happen. Trying to guess what Oda's next move, is like trying to snipe a mosqito flying around in the air with a hatchet.
-
The weather was clear and sunny at Enies Lobby even during Aqua Laguna, while it rained on W7 and its surroundings. And it was still sunny a few moments before the Franky/Fukurou fight, look at the page with the Justice Tower sliding after Kaku's rankyaku. Doesn't seem too natural to me.
And everything points out to Dragon being able to create storms. Wether it is because he controls wind or weather is still unclear, but that's pretty much a given.
You're right! Obviously, the only possible explenation is that a character we haven't seen in what, like, three hundred and fifty chapters or something is going to make a sudden, unnanounced, unforeshadowed reappearance. And then ET lands, bringing the Harlem Globetrotters, who defeat CP9 and are the SH's real opponents.
Seriously, while I suppose their is a slight chance, reintroducing Dragon right now is simply bad storytelling. And whatever Oda does, he does not do bad storytelling.
-
Hold on a sec…I just noticed that Franky was still using cyborg parts after he ran out of cola
On pg14 he uses a star shield and an attempted beans left. This must mean that the cola acts only as an amplifier of his abilities (strength, speed and parts) with some abilities requiring cola (the coups) -
Heh, Franky's chapter was so awesome, I think everyone overlooked the mini story; what is Goldenweek up to? "Follow the rainbow"?
I did! I did! I was the first one to bring it up! Nobody noticed!
Or am I just on everybody's ignore list?
-
I feel like the 'defeated' characters in this arc still have a role to play. Sanji has been beaten up, but I have no doubt he'll find some new role to help obtain the remaining keys (although it seems the only important keys are the ones for the handcuffs that bind Zoro and Sogeking and Robin). Fukuro and Blueno could spring back at the end of the arc if/when Lucci is defeated. It seems like the Strawhat crew might try and shakedown zipper-mouth for information/rumors about government activities in the area. His words could guide where the Strawhats will travel to after this arc.
I am still perplexed about the huge difference in power between the four weakest members of CP9 and the three strongest. It would take the combined powers of the three weakest CP9 agents to bring down Jyabura or Kaku. Lucci could potentially be taken down by the combined power of Kaku and Jyabura. Can Sogeking and Zoro really tackle two of the higher tier members of CP9 on their own? It seems like some sort of interference from other Strawhat crew members is going to be necessary. Otherwise, Kaku and Jyabura might just start hurting one another as they try to one-up each others' attacks.
On an unrelated note, does anyone think that CP9 was training to eventually take on the Shinchibukai behind the back of the other world powers and stomp out the Pirate Age? It would be neat if each CP9 technique was found to correspond to a particular Shinchibukai member.
P.S.- I found another neat little anecdote about Franky's "hammer" attacks. It seems that the blows that Franky delivers on Nero and Fukuro are both done with his "exposed" hand (i.e.- no skin cover, just cyborg parts). My guess is that Franky may have some current in him and the punch is equivalent to hitting someone with exposed live wire in your hands. I do believe this phenomenon is separate from the storm outside the lobby though.

-
he did say he had half a bottle left before
He said that before the fight and when his hair falls that means he's run out
-
while some of you might disagree that dragon will appear,
I have to remind you that even after the strawhat beat cp9, they still have to save themselves from the buster call, with puffing tom as their only way to leave the area. not a good way, as the marines can just destroy the track.
so they are pretty much trapped there unless some outsider with misterious power (dragon, whoelse :D)save them.
and remember, buster call sign can be seen from far away, maybe dragon saw then and decided to come and check? -
So does this mean the Ms. Goldenweek mini-story is over?
-
So does this mean the Ms. Goldenweek mini-story is over?
Only until when we see mini-story chapter with "final volume" on it (this one has volume 35) but it should be very soon (most possibly next chapter)
-
But they must help Mr.2!! And what happened with Mr. 3? He just appeared in 2 or 3 chapters…
-
I'll try translating. note: I'm not japanese, I only learned it from watching anime and playing some jap games,so expect mistakes. I dont mind scanlators btw.
Page 1(cover) : Baroque Works Vol 35 [ Colors Trap , dream of rainbow…(cant read the rest) ]
Page 2
Chimney : …...
Pirate bro's so interesting.
Gonbe : Nyaa NyaaLuffy : (cant read the 1st bubble)
Okay, Wait for me Robin.
I'm gonna send the pigeon guy flying.I'll skip page 3, it's just Spandam complaining to Lucchi that he let Chimney follow them instead of killing her.
Page 4
Franky : You're fast at running away huh.
Fukuro : Chyapapa, your proud fist, I dont need to take hits from that.
Franky : "FRanky Triangle"

Missed...Page 5
Fukuro : That kind of trick wont work on me!! Chyapapa!!
Chyapa !!
Franky : Oraaaa

Franky : "Hammer"
Fukuro : [Tekkai] !!!
Franky : …aaa !!?
Fukuro : This punch is greater than yours...!
[JyuGon]
Franky : Fuu…....n!!!!I'll do the rest next time.
-
Thanks for what you've done so far!
-
When can we get a good scanlation like Stephen's?
-
First off, stephen doesn't scan, and second, you're lucky you get any coherent translation.
I stayed out of this because I found the whole argument about lightning to be dreadful. It's just a damn effect. You know, like how a ship would form in Popeye's arm and shit. I mean, come on.
Another notch in Franky's belt. But I kinda wonder about Fukuro. Was he that much of a brawler? I mean, he just didn't try to evade, he got a fist fight. With an Iron Man. I kinda think he was too massive for Kami-e. Don't really think it's over, though.
-
How exactly would Franky cause a lightning storm outside the building?
Anyway that subject is redundant so it's best just to wait till next chapter.
Are you saying Stephen's translations aren't coherent? I'm a Stephen loyalist so I strongly resent that if you are, but if you just mean to say we are ACTUALLY lucky that we get coherent translations, like we shouldn't be pestering about them, then I agree with you.
-
Yeah, if you get any coherent translation it's cool…...and the phrase was "stephen doesn't scan," I didn't say anything bad about his translations.
I wanted to avoid it, but I'll say that when he says "Nnnnnnn Supaaa!" and we see special effects, it's most likely just one of those things. Please check out my Popeye example.
-
And I'm not saying that's impossible, I've been trying to say that we really need to wait until next chapter. Just because franky is talking in the panel doesn't mean that the scene outside is fake, is what I'm saying. It might be, but it might not be.
I'll say that your special effect theory has some merrit because I don't see any rain in the panel, just lightning and the really dark clouds.
No but you said we'd be lucky if we got a coherent translation, and since Stephen - as far as I know - translates every chapter, it seemed like a stab, which was why I asked, and I'm completely aware that he doesn't scanslate….
-
Welp Bucc, you shouldn't have got into it. We should just leave it as it is and not argue. You may be right, or (doubtful) invisible worm is right. There, I expressed my opinion. Don't rebutt this. Just wait.
-
Looking at the chapter, I'm starting to think Bucc is right actually, I didn't notice Chopper's starry eyes. I'm probably on a roll for being dead wrong. Still, we'll see, who knows. Wait, are chopper's starry eyes the in the last panel of that page, or the first (I know you read right to left but I'm not sure if like, on some pages your read bottom up).
-
Ah well, okay.
Anyway, Fukuro and Kumadori. I keep going through the chapter and wondering. Sure, it is all pretty amusing, but can they really be that easily done in? Every few seconds Kuma tries something and gets shuts down by Chopper, while the Fuker ate every punch thrown at him.
Thanks, huron.

Same to huron. As for the two fights of present, to me it seems like both kumadori and fukuro are taking the battles seriously, especially since Franky already showed Fukuro that he could break tekkai, etc. Still, it's possible that Fukuro was just messing around, and now that Franky's shown his true strength, Fukuro will step up to the plate. If he doesn't, then that fight's obviously over, since a low fuel franky was able to easily fight on par with him.
Chopper's fight seems like comic relief, it reminds me of Chopper's fight with the priest, I don't know what to say on that.
-
Thanks a bunch for the HQ huron.

You find the whole argument dreadful but you can't help to dig it up long after it has been settled without forgetting to show some contempt to those who argued about it? Makes sense.
Oh and thanks for the HQ Huron.
