Sensei No Bulge (Bulge of the Battle Star/Barrage)
-
That's a lot of ''crookeds''.
-
@RobbyBevard:
It seems to me that the whole series might have been more interesting if, rather than this being a big surprise twist, it had actually just been the premise from the getgo.
I'm sure it would have originally been a surprise reveal much, much later in the story, but… it would have given the whole thing a bit more edge and uniqueness to it from the start to know the whole time there was a darker backstor and a more ominous presence out there.
Maybe if Astro had to race against the clock and take the org from Bulge or unite the people from Bulge, otherwise it'd just be brushed over as Bulge got shot in the head.
-
So did anyone else notice what appeared to be tiamat's father?
http://manga.redhawkscans.com/reader/read/sensei_no_bulge/en/0/14/page/8
Also if this manga is ending when would be the soonest that they would notify us?
-
Usually when series are done (because of poor popularity) they do it as quietly and unceremoniously as possible, so we'll probably find out by the editor's blurb on the last page of a chapter saying "Find out in the final chapter next week!"

If I wanted a slower, introduction "origin" story, I'd take the Kingdom / Gurren Lagann approach, but longer.
Start the first chapter out with protagonist in full swing, commanding a fleet of ships and engaging in midst of war, establish who his enemy is, what he's aiming for, and have him kick some serious ass in combat, showcasing slew of cool, interesting antagonists as well as allies. Make the audience wonder who these guys are. At the end of the event-filled first chapter, a monologue of "2 years ago - year 794" or some such, intriguing panel, and the start of the origin story.
From 2nd chapter, the real story starts. How it all began. At least this way, those readers who have been following since the first chapter will be intrigued to how all this climaxed to what they saw in the first chapter.
Kingdom (the manga) did this by showing Xin, the protagonist, as a War Genera leading tens of thousands into battle… then going back to how he started.
Gurren Lagann showed the massive cosmic battle as shadowy figure of the protagonist commanding his ship against infinite amount of enemies.
Those really work getting your blood pumping with intrigue. -
I think the author was heavily relying on the prince's identity as a "big plot twist that changes one's perspective on the manga" like per say "the truth behind One Piece treasure",but it is so underwhelming and trite that I can't feel for it. I was far more exhilarated when the CP9 was revealed and that wasn't even integral to the overarching plot. Prince identity stories are so commonplace and trite throughout the history of literature. It isn't anything new or interesting.
In retrospect, I kinda now wish he didn't kill off the "fake prince". I want to know what he would do if he was still alive and possibly allude to being the prince's "dark counterpart". -
Alright guys… T confirmed it.
"Shocking conclusion next chapter!" at the end of the upcoming chapter.
R.I.P.

Well, it was good while it lasted.
-
man, and after i heard so many recommends, i bet Chris and y ruler of time are pretty sad right now…
-
Wow, this soon? Well, it was a good series, enjoyed it while it lasted.
-
This is sad, just because I was liking it. ):

>____>
If this gets replaced by another series like Pajama no Whatever.
My rage. It will be palpable.
-
Well, it's kinda clear that Pajama and Bulge will be replaced by Cross Manage and Date Senpai; looking at the cover Aohige posted in the Toc thread, I'm really intrigued by Date Senpai. Cross Manage is somewhat decent (judging by the oneshot) but if there's fanservice like in the oneshot, meaning it'll be like Pajama, then your rage will be palpable.
-
The story was too generic to maintain reader interest. I can only hope that the author continues his work and makes something better next time, because his art style is pretty great, Maybe if he teamed up with a better author, he could collaborate on something fantastic.
-
I'm surprised by how many forumites thought this series was meh, because I thought it was pretty great
-
I hope to dear god the artist brings out another piece of work. I like the story, but I love the artwork.
Here's hopin'. -

Well, aside from the real prince dying in the first chapter, what surprises and twists were there along the way that made the series stand out? What memorable quirks or character moments?
It was fully competent and enjoyable, but it didn't really excel at anything.
-
Maybe I'm just too much of a Horikoshi fanboy, but I was genuinely excited with each new chapter, I liked the characters, etc. It's just got heart.
And my heart breaks for Horikoshi, it really does
-
Sadly, "this guy should get a writer" applies to soooooo many artists out there.
Hagiwara, Kubo, and Oh Great springs to mind.
The problem with these guys is, they're too veteran to admit they suck at writing.
Horikoshi still being fresh, may not yet have the arrogance and pride of the above mentioned names.
He's not too late!>____>

Problem?
!
! Cross Manage/trollface
-
Bulge's problem was it had all of space at its disposal but it's first outing into the outside world was straight out of a RPG.
They went into a cave and found a guy made of rocks.
It had potential, but ultimately failed. It's first chapter showed promise but it never excelled at anything beyond character design.
I'm sad to see it go if only for what it could have been.
-
I like the setting of Barrage. But it's main cast and story aren't as endearing to me as the ones from Oumagadoki Zoo.
Hopefully, this experience won't bring him down and will help Horikoshi to learn and surpass himself.
Problem?
Come on! You can't use taht out of context. It's just a single page that is there to make a push for main character's development.
-
I would have been drawn it a bit more if the setting was more unique and varied than the rocky wasteland that's been used for decades. When I learned that there would be aliens I was expecting something a little more sci-fi than typical fantasy RPG, really.
-
If he'd been given enough time, you would have gotten all of that stuff
-
It just goes to illustrate that the series could have been more gripping right off the bat.
-
Personally I found the idea of the series finding a common place right at the beginning a decent enough approach before going into anything huge or hazzardous. Because well, those tend to lose thier novelty overtime and often very quickly(even though such series can manage to keep a fanbase within the JUMP). So if there's anything, I consider Barrage's situation very unfortunate. I can't really blame how this series was done, or take any suggestions that can make it better seriously. Especially on a board with avid readers.
-
So much potential…
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/sensei_no_bulge/c002/24.html
Theyll probably all be off screened in an epilouge.
Also it looks like action manga have a much heavier burden to perform well then other genres in sj so this manga would have had to been near perfect from the beginning just to barely survive.
-

And let's not forget about Tico's design…
I really wasn't into this manga that much and didn't care a lot for it, but this chapter was amazing. Made me feel bad for its end.
-
I really like his art, but I think he should just team up with a writer like some other mangaka do.
-
Well, I read it because of weekly manga recap hyping it, and seeing how their last read chapter was 12, I can understand their love for it. But the last two chapters have flored my appreciation for the series. I'm up to my ass with destined characters, I loathe them, I'm so tired that you can't just be a joeshmoe, no you have to be the son of a king, or a demigod or some other bullshit.
Anyway, the art is pretty damn awesome and it's sad to see it go, but if so quick in it's lifespan it's already pulling this sort of crap, then it probably wouldn't have ended nicely in the future anyway (though maybe it's because the author knew he was being cancelled in a month or two and decided to get everything into high gear).
-
What's the difference between "destined characters" and regular people if they still have to work as hard to succeed? Besides, it's not like there was some prophecy that Astro/Bulge would save the planet or some such.
-

Aside from being born the son of the king who is the only one that could handle the power maguffin and then being caught up in a massive conspiracy to hide his true identity from birth in order to manipulate world events?
He was pretty much destined to be the only one that could do stuff, and others were manipulating him to keep him from doing it. He's a chosen one alright, and NOT an ordinary shmuck.
-
I just read on the SHonen JUmp TOC topic that the manga ends next week D:
"#41:
Lead CP: Retsu!! Date Senpai(New Series)
CP:Kuroko no Basket, Assassination Classroom
End: Sensei no Bulge" Gonna miss it ;_; -

This, so much this.
-
I'm not saying he's a regular shmuck. I'm saying, in terms of having to fight his own battles, what's the practical difference?
-

Overuse of the cliche "destined one".
Naruto was just an ordinary kid once, more or less. But then it turned out his father was hokage and there was a grand master plan towards him becoming uber powerful, and that destroyed all the hard work stuff… it turned into something he could only acheive because he was gifted it before he ever even started down his path.
And Luffy's hat from Shanks lost a little something when it turned out to be Roger's hat, didn't it?
Ichigo was apparently always the son of a soul reaver/hollow/something or other and that tainted him too. Takes away the entire random chance meeting of his and Rukia's and makes the death of his mother seem odd if his father was always a super badass soul reaper and Aizen had the entire thing planned out.
And YuYuHakusho revealing that Yusuke's dad was a demon so he had a second form and Kuwabara was officially forever outclassed was... meh.
Being the destined one, or having a super powerful father who passed on their will and power to you can be interesting, but usually it's just boring. Because it DOES take away their individual achievements some. Sure they may have worked hard or gone out on their own, but if their success ultimately boils down to a trick their dad set in motion 20 years earlier that only they have access to... it stops being their victory and instead becomes the success of their ancestor's plan.
Actual fated prophecy is an entirely different beast, and its usually terrible too, since the prophecies are ALWAYS worded in such a way as to allow interpretation and flexibility and misunderstanding, and that's always the trick to them, always.
Dragonball it ONLY worked because as soon as we found out Goku was an alien, every other alien out there was far his superior, he was actually inately really weak compared to the others, and he didn't really get a huge advantage out of it that a bunch of other guys didn't already get. (until later anyway.... and he wasn't the ONLY destined Super Saiayn... just the first.)
-
I hope by being the "true prince" Black doesn't mean that the King was Bulge's father or that the other prince was his brother. Maybe Black knows something about the current regime being illegitimate and Bulge being descended from the "true" rulers.
Or at least I really hope so because it would be totally ridiculous if Black had purposely switched them during childhood or the other prince was a robot/clone or something.
Lol. The plot of this series…just doesn't quite work the way it's presented. There would have been several better ways to start the story, like including Black before this arc, for example. Or having Bulge know that he is really the prince since the beginning.
With regards to the end of the series...well, it's bittersweet. The art and character design were excellent, the plot had potential, but it just didn't make it.

Naruto was always like that, he was born with a hax demon inside of him. It's basically the same as Astro, for whom the Org happens to work. The tool is only ever as great as the user.
Yuusuke being the son of a demon was retarded, though, no question about that.
-

There's a difference between having a hax demon put in as an unplanned emergency desperation measure into the one random child available as the village is slaughtered thats a monstrous option no one would willingly take if they had any other choice that then led to a lifetime of loneliness and being an outcast…
and it having been planned from before Naruto was born by his strongest in the village father and mother who happens to have a bloodline good for containing beasts (and she contained the specific wild beast before Naruto did) complete with keys to unlock the power in pre-planned phases that they were delighted to seal within their son who happened to be named after a storybook character that was written by his godfather who heard a propehcy about his pupil rising to be the savior of the world, and all three with full faith that he would embrace this destiny before he was even born.
That's the difference between being thrust into a scenario out of your control and making due with circumstances (or curse!) thrust upon you... and it being the preplanned destiny of the chosen one.
-
I acknowledge the difference you're outlining, it just doesn't matter that much to me as long as the hero earns his victory. Take the opposite scenario, where a loser nobody is suddenly given hax, and uses it to achieve greatness in the moral sense, saving the world, what have you. That's basically every superhero ever. It could even be a planned metamorphosis by some evil scientist or some benevolent last act of a dying god or whatever. They're still compelling. So what's the difference if the advantage/superpower came before or after birth?
-
…I don´t think i will like this chapter regardless what It´s said on it ):
-
New chapter is out: http://manga.redhawkscans.com/reader/read/sensei_no_bulge/en/0/15/
Farewell Bulge! Farewell evil soldier with the tired eyes!
Perhaps it would've been better if the kingdom of Industria had been made up of tiny planetoids, so at least Astro and Chinbeard could've travelled from problem to problem through space in a ship rather than just a desert landscape in a coach. It would even make character introductions a bit more interesting - I can just imagine Mr. Tad running through space, pursued by the Space Whale and Tico.
-
I think they left town waaaaay to early. And yes, deserts are so boring.
-
Would've been cool if the ORG turned into a hammer and smashed Black.
-
Well, that was good. Everyone got to do something, so that's as good as it can get for wrap-up of the series.
-
Such a shame it didn't have a chance to develop into a longer series. 3rd time's the charm for this mangaka?
-
Is it sure that it's ending next week? The editors note just sounds like it means the fight or the arc.
-
I haven't been reading the series since I dropped it, but I checked out this "final chapter" anyhows. Yeah. I think I'm done with reading new Jump manga.
-
Should I even bother reading this chapter?
I'm with everyone else. Until something gets in the 50-100 chapters range in Jump, I'm not bothering. Adventures are fun. Fleshed out adventures. Conclusions aren't everything, but I don't like them snipped away when they're in their period of delicate development.
-
^What you said pretty much.
That, and despite how understandable it is, I really do despise how Jump works.
