Just curious but did they keep the fehfehfehfeh? I always got a kick from that.
Yes, all the original laughs are kept.

Got 'em! And for those who thought I might've been joking about getting 11 sets…

you my friend are a hero! Funi said these sets may be special edition too so not a bad thing having 11 of them unless you decide to give some away.

Dammit, Shift!
This is probably why my set hasn't shipped yet! LOL
I'm black and the funky voice scenes are just fine to me. It's somewhat stereotypical but I don't think its racist, not offensive in the slightest.
Luffy loving meat and considered brazillian in the real world is worse than the fro dialogue. Even then its nothing.
Besides its fun to laugh at stereotypes, especially really old style stereotypes that could be anyone from that era.
Plus, it's not like the scene isn't stereotypical to begin with… what with the afro and all.

It wasn't. The afro was referencing a famous Japanese boxer. No black muscles references or anything like that (not that I'm saying FUNi's done that either). I don't mean to say that I found the dub scenes racist now that I've actually seen them instead of getting just a tiny glimpse at the accents, it's actually pretty innocent and I don't see there being any malice behind it. All I'm saying is that when I first heard that there were accents inserted into it I got a tad uncomfortable since I was thinking FUNi were interpreting that scene in a different way.
is colleens luffy voice lacking or is it ok in this set? Its understandable that she would of needed a little time to get back into the character but how does she sound? Also does Jonathans Brooks foxy voice work well?
As an African American I didnt even consider it racist or anything until it was brought up in this thread. The Japanese version did something similar but I suppose funimation took small liberties to that scene.
@gum:

Did you miss all of the previous posts raving about his performance? I've only heard clips so far, but I thought it was amazing…

Colleen actually sounds great, I was a bit worried too but no complaints. And I noticed Brina's Chopper seems to sound softer and a bit cuter. Robin's voice is less low and overall a looser, slightly less stoic take on the character.
Foxy's voice is perfect, very funny and very appropriate. I have a little video of him saying a few sentences with Luffy in the Episode 208 preview. Excuse the poor quality.

thanks i have to admitt he does sound pretty impressive! I was a little dubious at first when people mentioned he had a german accent but after hearing that im more than convinced. Good to know that luffys sounding good too.

Good. I mean, One Piece is rarely offensive, but sometimes it toes the line a bit. If I were more uptight the whole Okama/Newkama situation might have offended me. The Stereotypes there are stronger than the chlorine levels in most public pools.
I just didn't wana feel bad that I found the accent Luffy has there hysterical…
And holy CRAP Shift, what are you gonna do with them all?!?!
Give them to people so they too can enjoy One Piece?
AWESOME!
Well, I'm gonna donate at least some of 'em for the OPP to pass out at Otakon. I suppose I'll see about the rest eventually.
That's the spirit bro!

Even more reason I wish I could go soooo bad! One day I'll go to a con…
Has Sanji ever called Nami "Mellorine" in the dub before? Because he does in Episode 213.

Not that I recall. The most I remember we ever got to "mellorine" being used in the dub was during his "mellorine radar" scene in Skypiea. Nice to hear he used that now. Wonder if he'll ever call Nami, Nami-swan again in the dub (though the dub did try to shoehorn that term for that scene).

You don't remember him calling her Nami-swan in Season 2? As for Season 4, he calls her Nami-swan in Episode 207, right at the beginning, even though he just called her the usual "Nami-san" in the Japanese. I doubt that term's going away, seems they like using it.

It's been a while since I've seen Season 2, but I don't remember Sanji using that term then. He may have used it during the Happiness Punch scene, but I'm not 100% sure, I do know he said it in the Japanese dub…I think.

The scene I'm referring to is when Nami shows her outfit to Scissors so they can cross the ocean. But yeah, I remember him saying that in the Japanese for the Happiness Punch scene.

Well, that's good. Either way, it's nice he uses Nami-swan in the English dub. I highly doubt he'll ever use -chwan though, which is a shame, since I like that suffix for some reason.
I personally think that'd be going too far. At least "-swan" works well in English even if you don't know it's a variation of "-san". "-chwan" just sounds like it'd be weird and confusing.

Maybe they could slip it in every once in awhile. Like they did with eneru's laugh, I mean sure why not? Even if its too awkward for the VA's, it'll just be a couple of times. If not,it won't be a deal breaker for me or anything.

Yeah but Eneru's laugh isn't any weirder than the giants' or Foxy's though. Plus there's nothing "Japanese" about it. "-Chwan" is something that's very obviously Japanese and doesn't work in English. I think it wouldn't just be awkward for the actors but the viewers as well. I mean just because we would know what it means doesn't mean everyone else watching would too.
I'm glad swan is the finally. The only time I remember hearing it is in a commentary Lucy says "I play nami swaaaaaaaan" lol. Shame about the op, I was looking foward to it. So many other series in commentaries the actors seem kinda disinterested but with OP you can tell they all really love working on the show so the commentaries are always fun. I myself always loved the DB arc so I can't wait.
I read the posts, I said I don't remember hearing it. It couldn't of been said more than once before.
Well, I watched disk two and I loved it even more than disk one. It sure filled the gap of my One Piece-less week this week. I already said everything I had to say and that hasn't changed, but I will say my liking for the Davy Back Fight has officially been renewed. It could be it took a second time to appreciate it. It could be the wait for season 4 dub made it much more enjoyable for me. It could be the dub itself made it better than the original. Or it could be I've gotten much more used to One Piece's style since I first started watching the anime around this time in Japanese that it all works for me now. Either way, seeing season 4 in 16:9, aside from the obvious disappointments, still made my otherwise crappy week pretty special.
Both commentaries were great, and you can really feel the passion from the voice actors and Mike McFarland. Here's hoping season 4 sells well and we get season 5!
On a side note, it sounds like McFarland is really listening out for the unique laughs now. I think we can look forward to seeing all the laughs from now on, hopefully. I wonder if they'll ever use the ones they skipped like Arlong when he appears later in the series, or Crocodile? I guess consistency wise it wouldn't work, but would it be that jarring for the viewers?
Ehhh. At the rate Funimation is releasing sets, people probably won't remember that Crocodile and Arlong didn't have their laughs.
For what it's worth, mirai kôkai is intact in the French DVDs I have so… I dunno what's going on. Maybe Toei don't have a textless 16:9 version of it anymore or something.
They shouldn't be quick to use the fake over-acted sounding laughs every time. Giving a serious villian a laugh that sounds so fake ruins the moment, so to speak. FUNimation made the right call. Dorry and Brogy and Foxy aren't even close to being in the same league as Arlong and Crocodile. They need to remain sounding realistic and serious and evil.

I beg to differ. I actually found both Arlong's and Crocodile's laughs to sound pretty threatening and eerie.

It's not about being realistic or over acting. The unique laughs are part of the characters' personalities.
I don't know about you, but I can't imagine Blackbeard without his "Zehahaha", or Brook without his "Yohohoho", etc.
Jeez Shift. There's no kill like overkill.
I think you get say whatever bad things you want about Funimation for the rest of your life at this point and can't be called out for not properly supporting them.
So I guess now that Season 4 First Voyage is a tangible product in the hands of some of us there's only one question I can think of asking. When do you think the negotiation process will start for Season 5, once production wraps on Season 4 or once all five Voyages are released?
Once all 5 Voyages are out. I think the wait will be the exact same as before every time and we'll always see FUNi use the "Your Wait is Over" tagline for the first trailer of every new season.
I hope the wait for Season 5 isn't that long, would be rubbish if the gap between the English and Japanese release got any larger!
Anyway, I was watching a review on youtube and came across this image of Funi's ending 15:
!
However, I noticed that this shot doesnt match any shot from the Japanese ending 15, the gaps between the characters are much larger in the English version:
!
Was there multiple versions of this ending in Japan, or have some of the character art pieces been rearranged in the Funi version?
I noticed that right away too. Who knows could've just been in the masters Toei gave FUNi.

I don't think the point of a dub should ever really be to get as close to the Japanese as possible. I mean I'd love for shorter gaps or even no gaps but as long as we're actually getting new episodes how far behind we are shouldn't matter.
We're one Voyage from Water 7, then Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark, Sabaody…It's pretty much entirely smooth sailing from here on out.

i hope not. It may be the case with other series but cmon they cant just stop in the middle of a major arc before enies lobby thats too much and especially if we have to wait so long again its agonisingly slow. I think the sales for this season are going to go really well , but if we can just get through enies lobby i think the series will be made in america. It probably already is now , seems to be doing rather well.
I'm just hoping we can get news on potential BD releases by the time we at least get to Thriller Bark. For some reason, I'm really looking forward to that arc. I do enjoy W7 and EL, but there's just something about TB that makes me think it'll look awesome on BD, especially the fight w/ the Three Enigmas, Moria, Oars and Kuma. Even if we still get no news by then, I'll still be getting the DVDs. They still look pretty damn good upscaled. ^^
I wouldn't expect BD of "One Piece" unless it's available in Japan, Movie 8 was probably an exception. The rest of the movies have been released on BD in Japan, so if we get the other movies we should probably be getting those as well.
funimation must be very close to finishing production on season 4 now and if we are lucky hopefully a few phone calls will be going out to toei

They were only in the late 230s a couple of months ago so I doubt it. By now I'd estimate them being in the mid-to-late 240s. Let's not forget the recording's all happening under one booth. Big enough of a buffer to start releasing but not quite done yet.

Sad, but true.
Considering the issues with Tacky & Tsubasa, who do Crazy Rainbow (most of Enies Lobby, FYI), we may be looking at another wait. Let's hope these people don't do any more One Piece songs and that there is never another issue with any of the other artists. I think it's rubbish, even if I like their songs…
Would any of us complain THAT much if we got Brand New World more than 15 episodes in place of Crazy Rainbow, though? I mean, yes it'd be annoying, but I love that opening.
…Wait a minute. I just thought of something. Wasn't BNW the last 1:50 opening, while CR was the first 2:30 one? Wouldn't replacing CR with BNW be kinda weird, episode time-wise? That'd be like, a few minutes chopped off of each ep, and it would add up I think.
