@Waboshi: Yours, too, eh? Awesome.
Also, my fluency in Spanish (though it's declined a bit in recent years) comes from being Mexican-American…
@Cyclone_Baroness: I like my green nice and abrasive.
So tell me, as a fellow Spanish speaker, do you find it borderline annoying to hear the "Spanish" in the Animes? I mean I find their english pretty funny but I don't know, I don't like the "spanish" they use.
-
Robin: Yeeah, she looks way too much like a streetwalker for my tastes. A complete 180 from the classy dress/coat combo she had in Movie 10.
We might prefer her designs to be classier, but remember that Robin's looked like a stripper since day one…
! So while it is a 180, it's anything but surprising.

Only when they mangle it. To be honest, the only two series I can think of that constantly use Spanish are One Piece and (ugh) Bleach. I did groan when reading/hearing "Gigantesco Mano" and "Brazo Derecha del Gigante/Brazo Izquierda del Diablo," though. My worst experience with mangled Spanish so far, was listening to the English voice actors in Bleach completely butcher the Spanish language (and the Japanese one, too, but that's a rant for another time), especially when most of the Japanese VAs pronounced it correctly.
This literally hurt my ears and made me produce an audible groan:
[hide]
(0:51) I case you can't tell, he's supposed to be saying "Glotoneria."[hide]
(2:41) And this is, more or less, how it should've sounded.I remember that particular VA made his way into the [as] forums shortly after that episode aired. Man, I can almost remember the rant I posted in response to his post in the episode discussion thread. In hindsight, I should've probably ignored it, but I was a bit younger then and the mispronunciation was too blatant for my tastes…
Uh, but yeah, how about that Z movie? Looks damn good and all that…
(Sorry for the tangent, mods.)
-
RE Deviant: No, you have every right to cringe at that lol. I would think they'd know better since Funimation is based out of Dallas, Texas. Maybe they should just have Ed Blaylock voice all of their characters! D:
-
Sorry to go off topic, but are you saying that Bleach VA actually went into the forums and posted about complaints? That's a bit… strange. I thought most professionals ignore that. Just a side comment that I generally do enjoy the Bleach dub, but that particular actor... wasn't that good in my opinion.
Back on topic, it must be frustrating for people who know the actual language to hear such butchering. Even if the actor didn't mean to do it, you would think the ADR director would care enough to check accents and pronunciations.
-
@Calchexas: If you're referring to the awful Bleach clip, VIZ is actually in charge of that particular dub, not FUNi…
@Chopperrules: I forget exactly why the VA showed up to post, but I replied to his initial post with my rant. He was legit, too, since I contacted him through his site with a link to the thread and he replied. He was pretty cool about the whole thing, though, despite how harsh my criticism was…
I wonder how the Japanese feel (those few (probably) who actually watch English dubs) when they hear English-speakers (mis)pronouncing Japanese words. I imagine it's something akin to how I felt when watching an English-dubbed Azumanga Daioh episode. Oh, the cringing that occurred…
OT: I hope Ain is not just another pretty face, but a capable fighter...

"PAH! Those hard-working actors are just the devil for pronouncing words the way their directors told them to! Someone should tell them they suck, because lord knows my friends don't do that enough already! It's all their fault for killing my favorite show, and FORCING me to watch this putrid mess!"
Shut the hell up. Nobody cares, dickwad.

Just to be clear, I have nothing but respect for what voice actors do. I may not particularly like one's work in a specific role, but I still respect them. I don't think the guy in question is necessarily terrible, I just think he could have done better.
But I kind of agree about people harassing them about doing their job. I don't think people outside who know nothing of the industry really have the right to complain about a lot of the things I've seen. But I do feel they should be more careful about pronouncing words correctly, as it could offend people who know the language.
-
Well, for one thing, this is assuming Japanese VA's give two shits about pronouncing Western words correctly (here's a hint. They don't. At all. See every anime ever for more details.) but either way, do we really need to send them big ol' rants instead of what I prefer to do, switch to the Japanese track. I mean, it's cute that you guys are being all angry and pretentious, but if you must alert them, they put up with enough slobbering backwards asshole fans already, just give them a polite heads up.

I'm not condoning that at all. I most certainly don't think it's fair for people to harass them just because they happen to not fancy their work. You do make a good point about the Japanese tracks as well, but the dub has an opportunity to improve in certain areas the Japanese version may have failed.
Anyway, I'm not angry at all about this myself. I just felt like commenting on what I think should be done here. But I do agree with you that these things should be handled in a way that is more mature than just sending them rants.

Here's the thing, though, people are allowed to criticize the mispronunciation of words when it's that person's (the who who's mispronouncing) job to do these things right. Voice actors, Radio DJs, Voice over specialists, vocalists, actors, etc. all have to take classes (for those that go to school for it, which many do) in proper pronunciation and enunciation in not just English, but many common languages (Spanish, French, and German are ones that I've had to or will have to take.) At least that;s how it is in the states. When you're a vocal performer, and you can't do your job right, people are allowed to criticize. It doesn't matter if they care or not.
Also, telling someone their not allowed to criticize a voice actors voice acting, simply because they watched it, is like telling someone they're not allowed to criticize Rebecca Back simply because they chose to listen to her song.
Really, it just makes you song like the dickwad.
-
Anyone wanna take bets on what Ain is going to sound like? I kinda hope she has some crazy schtick. Cause she seems very ordinary to me just looking at her.
-
I'd be amused if she spoke and acted like a Yankee. Have we had any confrontational women like that in OP? I'm thinking, but I can't come up with any…

Um, okay, let me put it this way. Because you brought up Rebecca Black, which is a crummy comparison but I'll run with it.
I, like everyone else in the world, do not care for Rebecca Black's music in the slightest. As she chose to put her work out there, I, as someone to has listened to her music and formulated an opinion on it, have every right to state what I think is bad about her music, and I can say whatever I want about it. However, beyond writing a fair and educated review (which I don't actually care to do) and not listening to her music anymore, there's nothing else I can really do. I am not a musician, nor do I have the faintest clue about how good music is made, so I have no right to actually say what will objectively make it better and how it should be improved. Moreover, because Rebecca Black most certainly doesn't care about my personal opinion of her music, even if I was a musician, I wouldn't go and seek her out and rant to her about how much her music sucks. That would be rude.
Now, Mr. Deviant Mugen here is not a voice actor, as far as I'm aware. (Deviant Mugen, if it turns out you're really Steve Blum or something, I apologize.) He probably has no idea about how the industry works. He has every right to have an opinion about the works, just as he can freely express those opinions. Now, getting all bothered because, surprise, American actors pronounce words with American accents is one of the dumbest things I've heard in my life, but that's beside the point. He can say it all he wants to, I can say I disagree, and at the end of the day we can both stop listening to each other if we don't want to. Now, what he shouldn't do, as Chopperrules put it in words better than I ever could in my enraged state, is go and harass the actors themselves for it. Especially when there's a strong chance the actor was just reading the lines as the director instructed.
Besides, Nex, if you don't like to hear me talking about how Deviant Mugen was being a childish little turd, you don't have to read my posts. Simple as that.
-
I can't imagine Ain being anything but the calm, hypercompetent underling. Well, assuming being an underling is the extent of her character. The poster and the second, more casual outfit seem to suggest otherwise.
-
@Nex:

But that's not what the argument here is, though. Yes, you are allowed to criticize, but sending rants is not the respectful way to go about it. No one wants to come home from work to that, and that would not help the situation.
Writing a mature letter to VIZ (or any company in question) is the best thing to do, but again, ranting and being rude will not get you anywhere.
-
I'd be amused if she spoke and acted like a Yankee. Have we had any confrontational women like that in OP? I'm thinking, but I can't come up with any…

Calm would be soooo boring. I really hope they don't go that way.
-
Um, okay, let me put it this way. Because you brought up Rebecca Black, which is a crummy comparison but I'll run with it.
How about a better comparison then. I hated just almost everything about Moulin Rouge. I will heavily criticize (or rant) about Moulin Rouge even though I paid to see it in theaters. I have every right to do so.
I, like everyone else in the world, do not care for Rebecca Black's music in the slightest. As she chose to put her work out there, I, as someone to has listened to her music and formulated an opinion on it, have every right to state what I think is bad about her music, and I can say whatever I want about it. Fair enough, up to the end about seeking her out, simply because Deviant Mugen did not seek the VA out, which is why you going after Deviant is uncalled for. The VA posted on a forum, which automatically invites responses. Deviant replied in a criticizing manner (or rant, if you will.) Now, even though Rebecca Black might not care about your opinion, or the VA in Deviant's case, you both still have a right to criticize. Just like you have a right to criticize Deviant, and I have a right to criticize you, etc.
Now, Mr. Deviant Mugen here is not a voice actor, as far as I'm aware. (Deviant Mugen, if it turns out you're really Steve Blum or something, I apologize.) Once again, fair points, until your argument falls about because you're hosting the idea that Deviant harassed the VA. That's an assumption on your part. I'm going to assume we both read the same posts in which Deviant specifically states he (or is it she?) posted his "rant" as a response to a forum post by the VA.
Now, from what I could tell Deviant wasn't making aaumptions about how the industry worked. Deviant's problem was in the butchering of a language. A language that he or she grew up speaking.
Now did Deviant overreact? Possibly. But maybe Deviant really cares about his language, and doesn't like when it's butchered. Imagine something you really care about, like a song or a book, being covered or adapted, and it's done terribly. You're going to want to say something. And you'll probably say something to your friends. And if whoever is responsible invites responses on an online forum, you'll probably want to say something. Whether you do or not, I don't know. Personally, I might. Like if David Yates opened up a discussion, I might have something to say about his version of Half-Blood Prince.Besides, Nex, if you don't like to hear me talking about how Deviant Mugen was being a childish little turd, you don't have to read my posts. Simple as that.
Well see, it would be simple as that if this disclaimer wasn't at the end of the post, and if this wasn't a forum where if I want to follow and contribute to a discussion I have to read what people post.

Now here's where I don't get how you can be confused as to what happend, since yiou specifically asked deviant yourself:
Sorry to go off topic, but are you saying that Bleach VA actually went into the forums and posted about complaints? That's a bit… strange. I thought most professionals ignore that.
Then Deviant responded that yes the VA came to the forum and he responded to a forum post. Deviant did not initially seek out the VA.
Also, I think a big problem here is the word rant. It's connotation is notoriously bad. Would this whole thing been different had Deviant said "I responded with a post that was heavily critical of his pronunciation?" That implies maturity whereas "rant" implies immaturity even if that's not the case.
I'm just wondering if Kylor would have gotten so grumpy if the former phrasing had been used over the later.

Relax. I'm not taking anyone's side here on this, so sorry if it seems like I am. I'm obviously aware of what I asked Deviant and I'm not accusing him or her of anything. My goal in posting what I posted after was to just state what I thought on the subject of voice actors or anyone else receiving criticism from their fans. In Deviant's case, I don't see what he/she did as wrong, because the actor came themself to the forum. (Something I am still shocked about) In a rare case like this, the actor was looking for feedback directly from the fans, and I would say that situation warranted a response.
In most cases, though, I would not condone just sending a letter of complaint or ranting. As said, the actor in Deviant's case was just asking for it, so that's a different story in my opinion.
Hopefully this clears things up. I'm not really trying to get heated about this or anything. I just saw the discussion and felt like giving my two cents on the matter.
But I think all of us are getting a bit off topic here.Granted we're running out of things to discuss, but still. I missed what led to this discussion, but how did we start talking about Robin's horrible Spanish in this thread when it is more relevant to the latest episode discussion?
-
Well, whatever the context I'm still not happy with the way Deviant went about the situation, and at this point I'd have to actually see what it was the VA said and what Deviant said in response before I can state my case further.
-
Only if he still has the link and is willing to share.
-

I completely agree with you and this is where the discussion should have ended. Instead it's gone off topic majorly.
In fact start a new thread about it in another section, it's sparked enough interest.

I second this. This thread is supposed to be for the Z movie, not a random discussion about fan rants.

ok every one said they mind aboute the straw hats outfits but heres some suff that i have to say:
nami: with this halmelt she look like from team fortress
sanji: looks really super cool with guns
chopper: i love the hat but i cant tell if this a full suit or not
robin: i think its the first tine oda show more of her skin then ever, even in swimsuits he covers her a little
brook: everyone said that with his red afro he look like ronald mcdonald, but am im the only one how think that he looks more like johnny depp's mad hatter?
also what is all the red stuff there are wearing, looks like the dominant color of this film!
also i really want to see the different outfits there going to wear….
-
Hmmm…I didn't notice the scar on Ain's leg before. That's so far the only interesting part of her design. She really looks like a pouty Nami clone.
-

Speaking of which, Robin should REALLY get her bangs back. And her pronounced nose.
Otherwise, she looks way too much like a host of other characters (namely Hancock). -
The whole thing with no bangs is usually symbolic of opening up themselves to other people. There are a few stories I've read that have done that.
Long hair also sometimes signifies strength. I don't know if it is intentional in this case, though. -

Then what the hell happened to her pronounced nose, and her olive skin tone?
She never had the skin tone in the manga, but the nose is probably toned down(it's still kind of there) because the woman Oda was drawing most frequently during the 100 or chapters when the crew was separated was Hancock, lol. She also has brown eyes, which shows that Oda is kind of more involved with the movie than usual cause she has blue eyes in the anime and movies excluding Strong world.
I'm not sure how excited I should be for this movie. It'll have excellent animation, but the director's only credit is movie 8 and that sucked, but at the same time there is a canon element with Aokiji. This could be potentially disastrous or pretty good.
-

I am actually attracted to her. Judging from her expression, she has a mix of Tashigi's conservative personality style and Robin's confidence.
Bin looks awesome and eccentric.
Z feels generic.
-
Seeing the villains more closely, they are better. Ain looks interesting.
-

I really don't see how she looks like Nami.

Huh? Robin's nose hasn't changed at all.
-
I really don't see how she looks like Nami.
Good, then I'm not the only one who thinks she looks distinct.
Also, she's the first female character to rock a scar, isn't she? I hope she acts like a Yankee…

Well, technically, Nami has a scar but it's covered up by her tattoo.
-
I'm on the "Ain looks generic" camp. There's nothing about her design that makes her stand out from the other females.
-
True, though Nami's is self-inflicted. Ain's looks like a battle scar…

Maybe design-wise, but we haven't seen her in action yet. Which is why I'm hoping for a longer trailer to come out soon.

She looks interesting personality wise.
SInce, she doesn't seem to carry any weapons I am guessing she is a DF user.
-
i think she is not a villain maybe she is this stories main guest protagonist…..

Maybe, but going off where her scar is, she probably uses her legs like Sanji. That's not a place someone normally gets a scar in a fight.
-

Her coat and the info so far suggest that she works for Z.She could still defect to the side of the Hats, but I don't see why that would be necessary.

best movie evar, I hope it gets off in raw 1280p _
-
Calling it now. Ain is Zeff's daughter and a master of the Black Leg Style. Yes, very groundless. Only the possibly blonde hair, the leg scar, and zoros probable match up against the other guy. So. Yeah.

She's purple haired according to the pictures we got.
If I remember right. She is definitely not blonde though.
EDIT: here's Redon's post with all the colors

If Ain is going to be Sanji's opponent, I hope she beats the hell out of him. No devil fruit powers, just a straight up, Double Deuce ass-whooping…
Also, her hair is blue-ish, so she's definitely not a blonde...
-
How about the rest of the hats handle some non-fodder for once?
-
I'm personally hoping that Ain will be a Nami opponent, if nothing else then to give one of the girls another fight.
Regardless, though, I'm very, very excited for this movie!
-
How about Straw Hats teaming up on them?So called "Monster Trio" takes on Z,girls double-team Ain and the rest oppose the ninja guy.
