The preview looked good for this one. Let's see how it goes.
What do you mean no new characters?
I'll have you know Harisenbon is the very soul of this entire arc. Without him we would have had nothing.
Should be a lotta cool things to see in this episode. Hopefully they don't do something like put 90% of the budget into glorifying Robin's leg attack for foot fetishists.
This episode was doomed the moment the preview came out last week..Not once does Chopper use Kung-fu point in this or the next few chapters.
This really was half a chapter. So slow. So many unnecessary flashbacks. Thriller Bark wasn't this slow.

Don't worry…the attack wasn't even in the episode.
Instead annoying flashbacks for Zoro and Sanji. ~.~

What kind of flashbacks? New ones or post-war arc scenes we've already seen?
Edit:
lcpTHAT WAS A BLOOD-SPURTING BOWEL MOVEMENT!
You hear that? It's the sound of them literally taking what should be the best parts of this arc and turning them into the worst. This pacing has gotten to intolerable, pseudo Impel Down/Thriller Bark levels. They spent HALF THE GOAT-FUCKING EPISODE on them not only doing old attacks we've already seen, but tamer versions of better ones we'll be seeing by the next episode. I was somewhat joking to myself more than anything else when I said a few weeks back they'd spend inappropriate amounts of time doing a Sanji/Zoro flashback. Guess who got proven wrong? I'm also going to drop all pretenses that they're NOT just pissing on the drawing tablet when it comes to their art and animation. I even noticed they deliberately took out some of the best panels from the corresponding HALF chapter they covered (like that Jinbe grinning scene in the manga).
Also notice that almost everything from the preview of the next episode looks like filler, too. I'm done trying to make excuses for Toei or defending them.
This is going to turn into an even worse Marineford when it comes to pacing and filler - calling it now.
Well, Zoros flashblack looked pretty much like the last thing we saw of him in the anime before the timeskip, but I don't know if it was the exact same.
Sanjis flashback was like 70% just running away from Okamas and 30% what we've seen in the manga too.
Also there were the scenes of Kuma sending them flying.
this episode covered the last page of 634 and like 9 and a half pages of 635, mainly filler and focus on just zoro and sanji's new stuff.
556 should have the rest of 635 including the skipped brook part.
I've actually decided that the slow pacing is for the best. As long as it helps the next arc gain some semi decent pacing, I'll be fine with it. If the next arc has shit pacing, I won't be fine with it.
Who was it again that said that adding filler explanations was good for Toei so they can explain how some stuff happened that Eiichiro just flew by them? Be careful what you wish for because Toei will take it and throw it right back at you 10 times longer. Have fun with these "explanations"^^.
Soooo I'm taking it the episode isn't worth watching?
Jesus Christ, episode is not even out and people are already complaining .

Yeah, 'cause they already watched the episode. Without subtitles, but still.
Btw Toei seems to assume that in One Piece there is no logic at all. So Sanji can run away from Okamas whole seasons without anyone involved eating, drinking or doing other necessary things…

That was in the manga too. Iva said he would get no rest, being chased over the entire island 24/7 while fighting the masters to get the scrolls.

The problem is that manga readers like to judge an episode based on number of pages covered.
If it covers less than one chapter, then automatically it can't be good.
Or maybe it sucks to see an episode that is supposed to be an action packed one, filled with fillers for half its duration. The art doesn't help too…
It's episodes like this that make me wish for an eventual One Piece Kai in the future.
16 characters of Hattori?
This material wasn't going to translate well to animation to begin with, but whoever directed this episode is apparently in need of the dictionary definition of what direction is. Obvious padding aside, Kawamura's art was uncharacteristically weak.
I really hope that Oda stays away from ''big melee'' climaxes like this one and Marineford. His style just doesn't lend itself well to it.
I honestly didn't think this was that bad. Also, the music that played when Saji did the whole I rant and ranuntil one day I flew thing is exactly what I imagined for the scene when I first read it in the manga
That was just. . .awful. Flashbacks I can handle, but flashbacks to the previous episode? Its not like we forgot that Shirahoshi cried. Then they go and have flashbacks to Sanji & Zoro having other flashbacks to Kuma sending them away. If they really needed to strech the episode out that long, they could have at least reanimated those shots from their perspectives. It would look less lazy and might have actually added something. And then on top of that, they give Luffy a flashback to watching Lucci using Geppo, just in case you forgot the move-set of one of the major villains of the series so far.
And also, that ridiculously bad animation for Sanji's first attack and the 4-frame Daruma Jumping loop?
Brook's bit was funny though "Everybody say HO!", and the weakling trio's new bits were decent. I still laughed at Robin casually commenting on Sanji's sky walk while breaking some fodder's necks in the background.
Yeah, if this is how they're going to do the entire fight scene I might stop watching the anime. At this rate I'm half expecting and entire episode of just
! Luffy smashing the arc.
One of the things I liked about this sequence in the manga was that it felt like even when we're just looking at one person's new techniques, it felt like everyone else in the crew was still actually fighting. Here it just feels like the NFP are sending in one suqad after another and the crew's just taking turns beating them up.
MINORITY OPINION: thought this one was pretty decent. Flashback fillers lasted too long, but they started 16 minutes into the episode. And the new attacks looked good.
And I thought the art/animation was fine.
shrug
Same here. I actually liked the episode quite a bit. It felt like more got accomplished compared to last week, and Sanji just stole the show for me. I will admit though, if there was one gripe I had, it would have to be that the action when the SH started their battle felt very "slow" (like Sanji kicking those few fishmen, Robin talking for a while then clutching, Usopp talking then firing his Pop Greens, etc.). Hell, those little flashbacks put in for Sanji and Zoro weren't as bad as I thought they'd be either, though it was awkward for them to keep cutting in and out for Sanji's very often. XD

To be honest this is exactly how I felt about the corresponding manga chapters.
I fully expect things to get better in a few episodes when the giant melee isn't the only focus.
Dat fighting filler and flashback padding…. AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
At least Toei is showing respect for other animé companies. They're doing the same pacing that Pierrot is doing with Shippuden and their own war arc.
Overall, decent episode.
Half an episode of fighting filler is still better than half an episode of flashback padding, IMO.
Brook's "Everybody say HO! then SLASH!" was hilarious. XD
And Zoro's Ootatsumaki and Sanji's Spectrum looked very good.
I was expecting sanjis sky walk to sound and look like cp9s geppo….
guess I hoped for to much

Not sure what you mean. Shippuden is paced at around 2-4 chapters an episode. The chapters don't have as much content as One Piece chapters, but it's still a pretty big difference.
I wanted to see a Black Dragon Twister, but it was ok I guess.
@Galaxy: Very slow pacing with too much flashback and talking and not enough actions, according to some fans over at animesuki.
Officially bored with Sanji's attacks. Another reason why manga>anime lol

Yeah, it's because Naruto chapters have very little content in them, so even if they put 4 chapters, they still have to pad it out.
let's not watch the anime ever again in protest… oh wait
we can complain all we want but thats just it. nothing will be done to fix anything. one piece is a train that will keep running for the next 10 years no matter what.

The only one's that can make a difference are the fans in Japan. Most of them probably don't care, because they just watch it to see chapters animated.
It's too bad that none of them complain.

And I stand by what I said. Toei handled filler and explanatory pacing much better than Oda for the first half of this arc. But when we get to the point where characters are doing attacks we've already seen that add zero to the story or advancement of the plot, then that's when you know filler has turned from good to bad.
Yeah, I actually enjoyed this episode. I thought it was going to be really bad, the way some of you guys were complaining about it.
@Lazy:

That one cameo was probably the best part of the episode! I know it made me a little happy.
Hoping that the next episode isn't quite as draggy (though it probably will be) - I don't want to be upset with any upcoming Brook things! This part of the Arc is supposed to be really good, not annoying!
Seriously, I was expecting a hell lot more from Sanji's Skywalk. Instead of a CP9's Geppou look alike, we got what? An invisible floor below him? I mean, HE WASN'T EVEN KICKING THE AIR TO STAY FLYING FOR CHRIST'S SAKE! He just stood there, hovering. And I also think the animation of him moving like that should have been somewhat more fast paced. I mean, it's a freaking speedishy technique, right? It should have been somewhat like that time when Hody was handcuffed and attacking Gyro's ship. THAT was an animation for what Blue and Sky Walk could have been. At least Blue was better, and on this one episode, Spectrum was kinda nice, tough again he is spinning to enter Diable Jambe. Oh well.
Cool, action is starti-flashback. Okay, it's a bunch of good action bits now. My main problem here, and it applies to the manga as well, is how they just kinda stand around with 50K enemies. Like, I'm sure the bad guys can take them on better than how they did. It's like they're all just standing there waiting to be defeated. Aaand second half of the episode now. Dem flashbacks. Dat flashback within a flashback - to something we've seen like a hundred times now. Music selection isn't even very good.
Zoro's and Sanji's new attacks looked cool. Sky Walk was disappointing. Harisenbon and Brook both gave me a chuckle. Still, this episode was horribly done overall. Really, I don't get how some people will defend episodes like this.
EDIT: Wow, this board glitched on me. Mod, fix it for me?

Yeah, that was a very leisurely Sky Walk. More of a Sky Skip.
I'm disappointed with the art and animation again…It felt so lack luster. No umph to any of the attacks. And the flashback with Kuma made me wish that was what the style looked like again. The preview for the next episode looked much better though. Can't say I'll ever drop the anime. But I now I'll have to lower my standard bar for a while.
And I thought they couldn't do worst than last week. :getlost:
Crew interaction and conversations were awesome, and by far the best thing of this episode. Animation, art and general directing were sad pieces of shit.
Someone needs to explain to Toei that they are not saving money, they are costing themselves money. Yes, I get it, anime = expensive, and the padding is a required evil in the current situation. However, One Piece is the number 1 manga, and they have the only anime license. Hell, it is very, very likely that this will be the only series ever produced of it. So this material will be a cash-cow for the next 20+ years. Save for the fans crazy enough to buy everything, there will be a lot of people who won't bother with the arcs that are simply horrible. And not only that, it drags down the overall quality of the series, so the 'damage' is most likely not only contained to these chapters.
My advice to Toei: 1) proper filler arcs, and 2) consistency. And probably 3) bigger budget. They pay it once, and will profit from it ever after.
I thought the episode was just fine this week. The flashbacks were fine as well, because each one lasted two minutes at best. The episode had good pacing in my opinion, and I liked the added filler with Franky setting things up for his next plan. Brook and Robin had some nice moments as well. Most importantly, the art and animation was a huge improvement over last week.
7.5/10. Not saying the pacing is perfect, but I never once felt bored for the first time in a while during this episode.
This is just me but I think we're going to be seeing a lot better animation in Punk Hazard. Fishman Island has a lot of random crowd members that take up a large portion of the panels and I doubt the animators give a rip about them. Punk Hazard will hopefully have the animation be focused, and occasionally there'll be some crowd characters to animate… And hopefully there'll be a new director (wishful thinking? New World, new director?)
Sanji's sequence was painfully long. Gotta agree with Chopperrules, the art and animation were a vast improvement over last week, I don't know what episode you guys were watching.
...But I really can't forgive Sanji flying in the air. ... I just ... yeah. He should've zipped by, said his quick line to Shirahoshi, laid the pain on. Done in 3 seconds. But nope. And the fishmen didn't just look like they were waiting to be defeated, they were literally standing there letting Sanji kick them.
They made Zoro look really cool though.
