I wanted a more wise-cracking, funny Spider-Man. Something like Iron Man who really exemplifies the smart ass jerk done well. This Spider-Man seems to be taking things a bit too far :/
Spider-Man getting a reboot.

I'll say that Garfield's acting doesn't help much. It goes from utterly bored to almost vindictive. The quippy insults would sound a lot better if they were delivered with some fun and flair.

Totally agree. His acting makes it seem he's getting off torturing people rather than just do it because he's a funny twerp like that.

@Sniper:
I think he'll realize the responsibility thing with Connors becoming the Lizard.
Canonically, Peter is supposed to realize his responsibility when Uncle Ben dies. Which could happen at any point during the movie.

"Marc Webb's new Spider-Man is the superhero film for the Twilight generation"
-
That headline is terrible for the review, and will cause bad notions in those who don't go to the full link.
For those who haven't read the article yet, he's actually really positive on the film, and did give it 4/5 Stars.

I can't judge the movie from a really terrible review. Really, he compares a super hero movie to Twilight? They let any moronic "reviewer" write for a newspaper these days.
-
Collin talks about a very different thing that you would consider it to be from the title. The reviewer says the movie is adressed at the female audience that was brought into the action fiction by the Twilight. And that isn't a necessarily bad thing.
-
As long as the movie is good (or even if it isn't good but I like it) I don't care about stupid reviewers anyway.

so if this movie bombs at box office (which i doubt) would the movie rights go back to Marvel Studios/Disney?

Not as long as they make a movie every 5 years.
It would have to REALLY bomb in order for Sony to decide it wasn't profitable enough to continue doing, But, it's Spiderman, that's not going to happen. (Ditto Fox and the Xmen films… but Fantastic 4 and Daredevil and Punisher might just be let go)
However, its still possible that Sony and Marvel/Disney could reach a mutually beneficial arrangement where he can cross over with the Avengers' universe.

Doesn't Sony have Spider-Man….?
And Fox has X-Men? -
Slip of the tongue. Same difference, really.
And its what I said. even what you quoted. Just didn't edit it quiiite fast enough.
-
I do wish a single film company held all the Marvel properties tho. The Avengers movie would have been extra crowded.
-
I guess I'm the only person who doesn't want Spidey in the Avengers, huh?
I'd rather us get Ant Man and Wasp (I mean come on, she named the team) first.
-
Huh, seems like it isn't released over there yet. I've just finished watching it over here in sg since it's released earlier than the US. Despite being a spider-man fan and him being my favorite superhero…I have to say that this movie was pretty much just average, I had to force myself to look at it positively to even label it as "above" average...
! Don't want to spoil it for anyone but here are my thoughts.
! Pros:
-Romance was okay, considering it a superhero movie. Props to the director for being able to make it passionate. But it was way too passionate imo.
-Incorporation of the original element into the movie in a creative way despite tweaking a few things, it tries to stay true to its material.
-Awesome adrenaline first-person view swinging scenes and the swinging scenes as a whole.
-The Sewers, great job there.
-Spidey being a genius before getting bitten by a spider is emphasized here which is excellent.
-Web shooters and spider suit. How he had gotten it was explained, in fact…a lot of things were over explained in this movie.
Spider man snarky comments! I missed those and am really glad they are back.
-Great uses of spider-man's powers. Instead of just swinging and mid-air fighting, a lot of the scenes had spidey uses his web in special ways.
-Good Comedy
-The emotional scenes.
-No damsel in distress.
! Cons:
-MC is too much of a hipster...it's not easy to relate to him like the parker in Raimi's. Garfied was pretty much being this cool and silent kid instead of the awkward and shy boy peter parker is. I mean...skateboarding?
! -The Lizard. Motive was pretty bad, at least green goblin was an insane guy so he was..insane and doing insane stuff all the way but with the lizard...it felt like he was just 90% rampaging and 10% actually carrying out his plan. He wasn't terrifying at all imo, but you decide that for yourself.
! oh and the lizard cgi still looks like shit. Would probably be way better if they kept his labcoat and snout on instead of him being scaly hulk.
! -Gwen Stacy is a great character and the romance was pretty good(seeing how the director was from 500days) but I think the element of "nerd kid trying to get popular girl/hot chick" is nowhere to be found in this movie. I don't think Peter was even shy here, like I said, the Peter in amazing is more of a daredevil.
! -Not enough action/Short fighting scenes if I were to compare it to Raimi's first. You'll get what I mean after watching it...was expecting it to surpass it tbh.
-Not too realistic despite it trying to incorporate realism.
-Aunt May and Peter's relationship didn't give me the feeling of warmth at all, the kind of feeling that you get when you know peter puts aunt may above anyone else. In this movie, the relationship felt more like a normal parent-child thing.
-The last part at the end with the logo. Cheesy and really...stupid as hell.
-Flash Thomson.
! tl;dr about cons: Peter Parker is more of a rebel and if he didn't put on his glasses, you won't exactly label him as a nerd. But you can't exactly blame the movie when Webb himself said that the Parker he is trying to portray is more like an outsider. Villain was badly done and the entire plot of "finding your real identity" was....just there. I can't relate to it, maybe because I'm a dense guy. -
I'd put the post in spoiler tags if I were you
Like this
! Movie is sounding like exactly how I've been expecting it would be. Terrible characters, bad chemistry between actors, too little fun, too much trying to be serious and dramatic while still having the gall to have a poorly done plot i.e. pretentious. Looks like another bust.
-
It's not that bad.
You're right, it is pretty over dramatize at some parts.
and felt emo but spidey made up for it for his humor(but then, that's thanks to the canon.)
I forgot to mention that stan's cameo is one of the best.
I won't call it too little fun but maybe because we already watched how spidey jumped down skyscrapers and experienced swinging for the first time
in Raimi's flim, it wasn't really as interesting the second time.I still stand by that the film would have been way better if the villain wasn't the lizard.
-
! oh and the lizard cgi still looks like shit. Would probably be way better if they kept his labcoat and snout on instead of him being scaly hulk.
! Just because it looked cool in the comics and the animated cartoons doesn't necessarily mean it would've translated well in live action the lab coat anyway
-
One day I'm going to make a top 10 of why Marvel shouldn't have all its properties.

You look at one guy average review of the movie and call it a bust and none of the dozens of postives review all over the web…...... http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_amazing_spider_man/
-
I call it a bust because of what I myself have judged with the material that Sony has released (and oh has it released an excessive amount to the point that they're regretting it) as well as the general attitude the director has displayed during the making of this movie. This is simply a confirmation of what I figured this movie was going to be.
RT has lost any credibility for me when it gives movies like Prometheus, Star Wars prequels or Avatar high ratings. The critics are probably just happy to have a "serious" comic book movie which they can watch without being embarrased that they ignore the glaring flaws the movie possesses.
But hey, I might be wrong and I've unfortunately only seen the bad parts of the movie and that the chemistry, characterization and plot of the movie was good overall. It's possible. Though I'm not holding my breath for it.

Spider man opens big in Asia

I saw "The Amazing Spider-Man" yesterday. I wasn't a fan of the Raimi films (except for the first one) and was hoping that this one would be more up my alley. It was… okay. Garfield and Stone were infinitely better than Maguire and Dunst but apart from that there wasn't anything special about it. The Lizard was a pretty lame villain, the script was terrible at some points and all throughout the film I had this "Yeah, I've seen this before..." feeling. Oh, and avoid the 3D if you can, it's lame as fuck. Most of the time you won't even notice it.
-
Yeah, avoid the 3d. Also,
! Didn't mention this but the most famous quote in spider man was not included in this movie, instead we get this…cool graffiti thingy.
-
I heard that
! Uncle Ben effectively dies over some chocolate milk.
Is this true?
-
But is the movie any good for those of us that hated the Raimi films? Not just in hindsight, but actually did not like them at all even at the time?

If it is it would be in line with what the comics eventually revealed during the JMS era.
-
Yeah, finally we're delving into some CANON Spider-Man story. Hopefully Spidey 2 introduces the Spider-Totems and in Spidey 3 it all culminates in Deal With the Devil just in time for the next reboot.
-
@RobbyBevard:

It depends on what you disliked about Raimi's films. Both leads are way better than the terrible duo from the first three films and most of the supporting characters feel more like real people than comic book characters. On the other hand, the plot is every bit as non-sensical as Spider-Man 2 and 3, sometimes even worse.
-

that feels like sarcasm but i don't know if you're making fun of the movie just spiderman in general.
-
Personally, I don't get why this film is getting too much flak - it hits very well in the character development area. It was fantasic to see Peter grow as a character throughout the film.
! I love the car scene where peter saves the kid as well as him being unable to catch uncle ben's killer (being so driven initially) and giving it up to help everyone instead of becoming a vigilante. Most of the side characters are great in their own accord too.
-
No Donald Glover as Spiderman
no interest -
So I hear Spidey spends alot of time with his mask off again -______-
-
Personally, I don't get why this film is getting too much flak
Because no matter how good or bad the movie is, its near impossible to get past the idea that Sony only made it to keep the license.
Particularly since its a full on reboot, just 5 years after the previous film, rather than just a part 4. So we're getting the origin AGAIN, and next film we'll probably be getting Green Goblin, AGAIN. Same is going to apply to the Superman film using Zod, probably.
(There were less complaints about Batman Begins rebooting Batman & Robin because they were so starkly different, it used a new to screen set of villains, and because no one liked B&R)
-
that feels like sarcasm but i don't know if you're making fun of the movie just spiderman in general.
It's a little bit of everything. Mostly a complaint towards the notion that Marvel has a better idea on how to handle Spider-Man (and the X-Men for that matter).
I forgot to mention clones.
-
With Oscorp, it seems like they'd use Green Goblin, unless they take a Luthor approach and just have him as a mastermind, making others into villains.
We could have Vulture or Rhino (That'd be sweet).
Who I REALLY wanna see is Electro. -
-
No Donald Glover as Spiderman
no interestI still randomly tweet Donald4spiderman
Apparently one of the posters in peters room in the movie is of Donald.
-
Didn't Bendis create Miles Morales becaues of Glover?
-
@Sniper:
Didn't Bendis create Miles Morales becaues of Glover?
I remember reading something a while ago saying the idea was first thought of when Obama was elected, but the reception to Donald as spider-man is what pushed them to actually do it.
-
This was a very fun movie. It felt very apparent that Webb didn't want to do an origin movie, but rather a Spider-Man movie with the origin in place. He wanted to put his own spin on characters(which I loved), but he didn't necessarily want to cover what we saw in the first Raimi film.
My complaints would be that there was not enough Gwen, not enough of a transition of Curt's motives, and there could have been a little bit more action.
I will place it above the Raimi trilogy as far as a Spider-Man movie, but as an origin movie it suffered. It felt constrained by the fact that Webb had to re-create this whole setting once again for the audience.
-
I saw it. It wasn't bad. It wasn't amazing. There were flaws but it was mostly entertaining. Very cliche though which I guess all superhero movies are so thats not a real complaint. It was very acceptable…
-
Saw the midnight premiere, and I loved it.
Yes, they had to spend time on telling the origin again, especially because the new version of the origin actually tied into the overall plot of the new movie. But it didn't feel like just a rehash of the prior films to me, because the tone and circumstances, in everything from the setting of the spider bite to when and how Peter learns the key lesson about responsibility, was handled so differently. The film had a more serious and "realistic" tone to it rather than Raimi's films' over-the-top comic book campiness, but make no mistake, it worked, and it felt even more like "Spider-Man." Rather than try to compare or judge this new film based on it following up the Raimi trilogy… I'd go so far as to say this is how the story should have been told to begin with.
Okay, everything else after this is spoilery. You were warned.
! To start, I'll address something that a few people in this thread were worried about; how Spider-Man came off as a jerk in the clips we've seen. Well, in this film, the whole "responsibility" lesson is handled a little differently. There's no one sudden, singular moment where Peter sees the face of Uncle Ben's killer, realizes "OMG, it's my fault," and then just like that starts using his great power with great responsibility. On the contrary, it's told as a gradual thing. Peter actually witnesses the crook he let go kill Uncle Ben, and realizes it was his fault right then and there. But then as he spends time adopting his Spider-Man persona, he's not out being superhero yet.
! At first, he dedicates his time specifically to trying to hunt down and catch Uncle Ben's killer. It's only partially out of a sense of responsibility at this point, and mostly out of a selfish drive for revenge. It's during this period where Peter's being a sadistic jerk to the criminals he faces, and even ends up causing a mess in the process. It's not until the first appearance of The Lizard later, when Peter actually saves someone (the little boy in the car), that he finally realizes he has a duty to the greater good, rather than just his own agenda, and symbolically first calls himself "Spider-Man." We see him transform from a selfish vigilante into an actual "superhero." It's a gradual and well-executed character development, and one of the best aspects of the film in my opinion.
! Moving on, one thing I noticed is that a lot of the important-sounding dialogue used in the trailers didn't make it into the film. At least, not the cut I watched. Most notably, the plot points about what actually happened to Peter's parents, and how it tied into Peter's spider-powers supposedly not being an accident. I have no idea why; maybe the film tested well for early preview audiences, and once they knew they'd be doing sequels they decided to save some things for later. Best guess I can muster. We're still shown that Peter's parents' disappearance is still heavily tied into Richard's work for Oscorp, but Peter getting his powers comes off as completely circumstantial, unlike what the trailers imply.
! Speaking of Oscorp, guess who we never saw but is a big part of the plot? Ol' stormin' Norman. Even though we never saw his face, he got quite a few name-drops. One of the reasons Dr. Connors' research gets pushed forward so recklessly quickly is because, apparently, Osborn's dying and running out of time for a cure that Connors' research will supposedly provide. Obvious setup for the Green Goblin is obvious, but I still can't wait to see how things will play out for him. I wonder if the "mutant animal-freaks" angle will mean we'll see something similar to Ultimate Gobby…?
! One thing I must applaud the film for is drawing from the old comics a lot, while still giving things a fresh new interpretation at the same time. The Lizard seemed a bit under-utilized in the end, like many have been saying, but having could maybe done more with him doesn't mean what he did do wasn't great (did that sentence work?). Connors' mind and motives being influenced by the Lizard's own personality steadily taking over was handled really well. The Lizard's standard MO from the comics of "enhancing" humanity by turning them into lizard-people like him en masse was the basis of the film's climax, and also handled really well.
! Finally, Spidey fans like me will pick up on all the plot hints regarding the unlucky bunch that is the Stacy family. Shortly before his death at the hands of the Lizard, Captain Stacy learns Peter's identity as Spider-Man, and implores him to keep Gwen safe. Combine that with the Green Goblin seeming to be inevitably down the road, and… Oh boy. -
I have a question: Does Connors have a wife and kid in this movie?
-
@Sniper:
I have a question: Does Connors have a wife and kid in this movie?
They weren't seen. However there was a scene in Connors house, maybe upon rewatching one can find something to indicate that, but it appeared that he was alone. It would fit with his personality.
-
@Sniper:
I have a question: Does Connors have a wife and kid in this movie?
He did have a wedding ring in the movie but they never involve them, but they may come in since from the after credit scene it looks like they are not done with him…and just by the fact he is still alive at the end and not like the sam ramey movies where they kill off the villian.
